After a warm-up in Sydney, Maria is in Melbourne for the first slam of 2012, Australian Open ! Maria achieved here her best performance in slams yet, with a QF in 2010 :D

Last year she was beaten by Benesova in R2 so she has an opportunity to earn a few points assuming she will play better than in Sydney

She should also play doubles with Nadia Petrova, she has a final to defend. Let's renew this feat :cheer:

Can't wait for the draw and the start of this important tournament !

what a crappy draw! Good thing she does not have many points to defend. At least Jarka does not look good so far this year. It seems very unfair that the 27 seed plays the 2 seed.

She should beat Jarka. If Kiri plays a smart match and waits for Ballbasher to make the error...Maria should then win in 2. The problem is playing kvitova in the 3rd round:(. But we will wait for the moment when it comes.

Jarka is in pretty bad form.. has been for some time. But what I saw of Kiri in Sydney was not good. So it's gonna be an interesting match I guess. Please win Kiri :sobbing:

And Igor just lost in qualifying.. :bigcry: :o

Jarka in R1, considering the marvellous form of her and Kiri, it could be epic tennis :oh:

At least Maria has a chance against an opponent with about the same bad form as her. I don't think about a possible R3 vs Kvitova yet, just focus on R1. She will play on a quite big court and surely be on australian TV I guess, good thing :)

Good luck Kiri :cheer:

She was doing better than I expected but it sure helped that Jarka couldn't keep more than 3 balls in court

Nina.
Jan 17th, 2012, 02:00 AM
She said that she is very happy about the win and then they talked about her making the AO quarters before. She hopes to play well the next rounds. Then she said it was very hot and that she started feeling that more during the second set. So she told herself to get some more free points of her serve which furtunately worked.
She was really happy and relieved about the win, I think.

Kirilenko downs Aussie Gajdosova
Home > News & Photos > Articles > Kirilenko downs Aussie Gajdosova

Tuesday, 17 January, 2012
By Matt Trollope

It was a high-quality match, with some intense rallies and flashes of brilliance from local hope Jarmila Gajdosova. But, the Aussie was unable to score the first round win she so desperately craved.

No.27 seed Maria Kirilenko, rock-solid from the back of the court, recorded a 6-4, 6-2 victory on Hisense Arena in one hour and 34 minutes, sealing an impressive performance with an ace.

A quarterfinalist here in 2010, Kirilenko said she was pleased to have come through a first round match played in extremely hot conditions.

“It was a very difficult match ... in the middle of the second set I was starting to feel not very well,” she admitted.

“Every year I come here I remember that year (2010), and I hope to keep playing like that.”

The tale of the match becomes instantly clear by glancing over the statistics sheet. Gajdosova struck a whopping 42 errors compared to the Russian’s 14 and landed just 43 per cent of her first serves, an unfortunate outcome given her tactics coming in were to serve big and get the first strike of the rally in.

Looking to break her first round hoodoo – Gajdosova has never won a main draw match at Melbourne Park since her first appearance in 2006 – things did not begin well.

She dished up two double faults to surrender her serve in the opening game, and sent a backhand wildly long allowing Kirilenko to move ahead 2-0. Gajdosova didn’t panic, settling into the contest with three winners in the next game to get on the board.

But the damage had already been done. Kirilenko was able to maintain her service break buffer for the rest of the set, helped by the local’s mystifying inability to find the court on several of her returns.

Gajdosova had her chances in the 10th game when Kirilenko brought up two set points and double-faulted them both away. But errors again came back to haunt her, handing Kirilenko the first set on her third opportunity after 47 minutes.

The second set was a repeat of the first – Gajdosova was immediately broken and soon fell behind 2-0.

Down 0-30 in the third game, she broke a run of nine consecutive losing points with a big serve down the 'T', and eventually hit her way out of trouble to hold for 1-2.

Gajdosova had chances to get proceedings back on serve, but failed to convert a number of break points, and another pair of errors after an epic-deuce battle allowed Kirilenko to maintain her advantage with a 3-1 lead.

From there, Gajdosova’s resistance crumbled. Increasingly despondant, the errors flowed from her racquet, and soon the Russian had built a 5-2 lead and was serving for the match.

There was a brief rally from the world No.39 when her strong returning helped her to 0-40. But as had been the case all match, errors again proved her undoing. Kirilenko rattled off five straight points to book her place in the second round.

The story was a lot different in the pair’s previous match, when Gajdosova defeated Kirilenko in three tough sets on the clay of Madrid in May 2011. But Kirilenko said a new day brought new possibilities.

“She’s playing in front of her crowd and she’s a tough player,” she said, “(and) it was tough match on clay (last time) but this is another surface.”

Kirilenko will next face Canadian Aleksandra Wozniak, a straight-set winner over China’s Shuai Zhang.

Good job, Maria.

I left at 6-4 2-1, glad to see she closed it in straight sets :)

She seemed to play quite well and focused (better than expected after Sydney...), but it's hard to tell as Jarka was quite awful, so much UE

Good luck against Wozniak, it's a winable match if Maria stays focused and doesn't struggle on 2nd serve.

Nice win for Makiri over Wozniack. Now comes the big test in Petra Kvitova. But Maria and Petra will be playing outdoors hopefully in some serious heat which will affect Petra's serve, power and overall performance. When Kvitova hammered Masha 6 - 2 6 - 2 in Moscow in the Fed Cup final Maria was not ready to play because she tought she would just be playing doubles and because the match was played indoors where Petra is great and dominant. Look for a much closer scoreline this match. Hopefully Maria plays well and gives herself a chance to be in the match and possibly cause a huge upset.

Nina.

Maria seems to have done a good job lately of learning from her defeats when she draws the same opponent shortly thereafter:

2011 Wimbledon: obliterated by Serena
2011 Stanford: 3-set loss to Serena

2011 US Open: thrilling loss to Stosur
2011 Tokyo, Beijing: thrilling victories over Stosur

2011 Fed Cup: obliterated by Kvitova
2012 Australia: ???

Hope the same pattern holds and this will be a good match. Of course there are other reasons to think it'll be closer that others have already mentioned.

Saturday, Third Round

Rod Laver Arena
[27] Maria Kirilenko (RUS #29) vs. [2] Petra Kvitova (CZE #2)
Head-to-head: Kirilenko leads 2-1
Which version of Petra Kvitova will turn up on Saturday? If it's the one who went on a 12-match win streak at the end of 2011 and crushed Vera Dushevina in the first round, then Maria Kirilenko, her third round opponent, could be up against it. But, if the version that stumbled past Carla Suárez Navarro on Thursday makes an appearance, a shock could be on. And Kirilenko has previous in upsetting the pecking order at the Australian Open; two years ago she saw off higher-ranked compatriots Maria Sharapova and Dinara Safina en route to the quarterfinals. The Russian also holds a 2-1 head-to-head advantage, although recent bragging rights lie with Kvitova, who won their most recent meeting, in November's Fed Cup final, 62 62.

I like your thinking nykirifan.

At least, Maria looked happy:lol:. I hope that she'll be able to play doubles but not sure about that...

Hmmm. Hope this isn't serious.

Tennis Channel showed maybe 1 minute of this match.

I actually liked her play in the beginning. Its just that Kvitova is super strong, tall and on top of that also a lefty. I just hope she doesn't get frustrated and continues to play well. She needs a better ranking and chances to get one are still there in the next months. Seeing some other 3rd round matches she could easily got one or even two rounds further.

I'm not sure, but she wasn't exactly lucky in grand slams with her draws.

kvitova is unloading on every shot, doing whatever she wants. :(Where has Maria's variety been against Petra in their last 2 matches? Makiri has ernough variety of shots to keep Kvitova off balance, doesn't she? Her last 2 matches against Petra have been so one sided. Petra served great in both matches and Masha struggled mightily on serve against Kvitova. That's a bad combination to have.

It was alarming to see Maria retire down 0 - 6 - 0 - 1. Petra served very big and very accurately in thier last 2 matches and that may have crushed Maria's spirits and sort of intimidated Little Masha. :scared: I hope her thigh injury isn't too bad because it would ruin her start to the year. :(

I didn't really see either of these matches but maybe Maria just hasn't had time to use her variety due to Kvitova's pace.

well Kiri has dropped the mixed dubs, lets hope she can continue on with Nadia. She has a ton of points to defend.

According to the statistics in the last 2 Kirilenko / Kvitova matches Petra served great and dominated Maria with her big and accurate lefty serve and off the ground. :smash: Petra won all 7 games yesterday against Makiri but Makiri only made 3 UE's in 7 games. The problem was Petra only made 4 UE's in 7 games and had an amazing 20 winners in the 29 points she won to Masha's measly 4 winners in 7 games. Maria played okay for sure but if Kvitova brings her A game Maria has no chance. That's the reality of it. And then you factor in Maria's leg injury and she had to retire from the match.

I left Melbourne as the doubles match was starting.. arrived in Sydney to see she had to retire after 3 games. I got to see her a lot though but vs Petra was the only match I couldn't see and she got injured. It's my fault. :crying2:
