What ever she does - or however she plays - I'll love her to pieces anyways - I've missed her shrieks - I'd to watch old 2011 matches to get my Masha fix and to start to believe in her chances again - 2 Petkovic matches where she crushed Petkovic completely - Rome's Wozniacki match - Wimbledon's SF vs Lisicki - her match vs J Goerges and so on - All I hope for is that she does well and at least reach the QF or SF - but winning it all would be such a thrill - I promise that I'll be out on the street - waving the Russian flag if that happens -

Hard to know what will happen at 2012 AO but Maria starts 2012 ranked No. 4, which is easier to take than 2011 when she started No. 18.

I'm really not expecting anything from this Aussie, but I'll be rooting for her every single stroke and hoping she wins the whole damned thing convincingly. It's her best slam not only surface wise but also in terms of what she produced there back in 2008 and how good the off-season is/was for her.

I just hope she's practicing the serve non-stop. Get a rhythm with it. And please flatten the forehand. Aside from her week at Rome and the Yakimova match it was the most embarrassing part of her game last year.

Actually it's the draw I wanted...nice rounds 1,2,3...then difficult.
She did well at Slams when she had tough draw, so this is perfect.

Maria has played Gisela numerous times since Wimbly on hardcourts in exho's and won with much trouble each time, no? I know they're only exho's but it means she should be well used to Gise's game on hard. Plus I don't think Gisela's been in any sort of form since the French really....

Gisela's slices are waaaay more effective on grass against Maria and in general because they stay lower, and I'm sure Maria will have revenge on her mind. I'm not too worried about her to be honest. How has Kerber been playing recently though does anyone know? I'm only familiar with her due to the USO last year.

Why is everyone so scared of Sexlana all of a sudden? Maria has a huge mental edge and a firm grasp on all the other Russian girls' wigs.

Movement will be key though. Sveta can put the ball on any part of the court with the most tricky angles with that FH. It's gonna be tough but that's when Maria plays the best.

So Maria will probably get something like:

Rd1: Dulko
Rd2: Minnella
Rd3: Kerber
Rd4: Kuznetsova
QF: Serena
SF: Kvitova
F: Li/Azarenka

Really tough one, but tbqh I would've put any potential 2011FO or 2011Wimbledon in a different shelf from her three slams cause the draws were so ridiculous. I love the challenge, and so does she.

Thing is, I don't think Kuznetsova is as much of a headcase as she's made out to be. She's horribly erratic to be sure, but when she's in the right frame of mind, she has a pretty steady nerve... exhibit A being RG 2009, where she came back from a break down in the decider against Serena, and in the final was so relaxed that she started playing keepy-uppy with the tennis ball halfway through :tape:

Maria's best tennis beats Kuz's on this surface, but it's far from certain Maria will be showing up with anything like her best tennis

I do agree with the last sentence of your post though - winning a Slam with a draw this tough would be far more satisfying than winning one of the ones last year. But I daren't dream yet :awww:

Tell us! :D :bounce::bounce::bounce:

Ok, let's see if I can explain this..
Basically it's because even if I always loved and supported Maria since 2004, I somehow.. lost that contact along the road for some time. Not only with Maria but with tennis at all.

For example I remember when in 2006, at US Open, I couldn't watch the final because of my job (it was too late in the night) and then I found out the result on the internet and even if I couldn't see the match I was so happy. I remember this moment so well, along with Wimbledon 2004 of course.

After that I remember keeping watching matches and tournaments again in 2007 but then I somehow lost the contact, and I slowly stopped watching tennis along 2008... I totally forgot about it, now if I think back about those months I actually don't remember why or how I did it!

Well, then the story goes to june 2009, just before Wimbledon. I was talking about it to my uncle, who knew I liked tennis and supported Maria, so he was surprised when I told him I had no idea she had that shoulder injury and she had just came back from months without playing. It was like waking up after a sleep and couldn't remember much about what happened before.
I remember perfectly that day watching her match against Dulko in 2nd round, it was her first match I watched since a LOT of time, and I remember how bad it was and how much it hurted me to see her lose. I've never stopped watching tennis again after that..

So in the end I want to believe that this is a sign.
That if she goes on in AO this time we may all see once again that Maria we didn't see in the last 4 years.

Ok, I confessed. Probably I'm just crazy and delusional and I just need to rest, but I don't care, I just hope for the best.

Here we are in the midst of the 2012 Tennis Spring with fans popping up like flowers in a well maintained garden, even Craigster is back. I haven't seen Teerin yet, but he may be hiding under another new handle and awaiting discovery.

With the Draw out, the stage is set upon which will play out our dreams and schemes, fantasies and halucinations, all with the common thread of hope for fierce battles, epic victories and fresh glories.

Just in time to record and document the New Reality, Jamie has a new computer to capture the ferocious fist pumps following stunning shots, the "c'mons" after amazing gets, the death glare preceding sensational serves and the savage shriek with each strike of the ball.

Most satisfying of all, though, will be the radient victory smile spreading across Pova's face, like the sun bursting through storm clouds.

There are sufficient numbers of pessimists, nay-sayers, critics, "realists" and the faint of heart around here to cast an ominous pall over the hearts of the most ardent fans. Ignore them!

Go, Pova, play tennis!

I got to join in from the lurking as well.

The draw is not easy by all means, but I'm really only concerned about Masha's level of play since she's out for so long. The other substantial factor being Sarin.

I know Masha's being out for a long time and may not be the favourite by all means, but I'm having this positive vibe for this slam. Hope she goes out there and have a blast, knocking off all opponents, charging all the way to the title!

This. She was in Paris last year but genuinely came down with a virus and couldn't play.
Also she's going after RG big time this year so Stuttgart is there for a reason.
But anyway this is off-topic and way ahead of us, settle for a decent AO for now.

I agree with most of the commentators regarding Masha's draw - She should be able to reach the QF at least - unless her tennis completely falls apart for some reason - From there on it's difficult to predict - The matches leading up to the QF maybe can give a hint - IF she's struggling in those matches and needs maybe 3 sets to win and she's DF:ing like 10 or more in each match - I'm doubtful if she's gonna make it to the SF - since she'll probably meet Serena in the QF - If she however plays well - with a smooth working serve - then not even Serena will be sure of a win against her - Let's hope for the best - and that these weeks of practicing has helped her as much as the practicing weeks before Wimbledon - Once thing is sure - I'll be awake to watch every match she plays - even if it kills me -

I'm so so excited for the draw to come out and even more excited to see her play. I have a good feeling about this slam. She looks so well prepared and ready to go. I hope she has an amazing tournament and gets her year off to a great start.
Well-prepared is about the last thing that fits Maria at the moment, she hasn't played a single match since October.

Anywho, most of the discussion about the draw in this thread has been rather unrealistic. Most of y'all seem to assume she's going to show up here in peak form, which is almost impossible FYI, and seemingly look past Dulko as if she never beat Maria and as if she hasn't pulled off numerous big upsets in her career. Don't come at me for saying this, but some of you need a reality check IMO. I would advise some of you to look at matches from players who just came back after not playing for a while, in other words were rusty AS FUCK, because that's clearly what Maria isgoing to be on Tuesday. Y'all can kill me now for being pessismistic and having Azarenka in my avatar, but this is just how I'm viewing it. I'm not convinced Maria is even making it to let's say Kuznetsova in R4 at all.

It's true that Gisela Dulko won't be an easy opponent - Head to head Sharapova - Dulko is 2-1 - Masha needed 3 sets in her last victory vs Gisela Dulko back in 2009 (Wimbledon) - Still Gisela is ranked #67 while Masha is in the top 5 - which should count for something - right?

About the rusty thing - I don't quite agree - Masha didn't play any tournaments preceding Wimbledon 2011 to get some grass matches under her belt - Still she made it to the final without loosing a set :) - I assume that Masha (and her team) knows what's best for her - I'm not sure that her withdrawel from Brisbane really was 'cause of her ankle injury but 'cause she felt that she needed more time to prepare - which she's been doing since Jan 1 in Melbourne - I for one wouldn't be surprised if she plays well from the start - Anyways - anything can happen - but as Sharapova fans it is our prerogative to be optimistic on here - don't you agree? - As an Azarenka fan - you seem to have gotten lost a bit :)

There's a major difference between that break and this one. First of all, that was just a break of two weeks. Second, she just had a succesful clay season under her belt, in other words had plenty of match play. This is a COMPLETELY different situation. Maria hasn't played a match since October (more than 3 months ago) and has been nursing an ankle injury. She wasn't even doing particularly well before she suffered that ankle injury either.
She's coming into this tournament with NO match play, NO confidence and there's a good chance there will be some sort of uncertainty in Maria's head during the match regarding the ankle.

And it's really not prerogative to constantly be optimistic and say she's going to win every tournament. I'd rather settle with being realistic, I did the constantly optimistic sham in the past and it made a mess of me too many times.

And no, I'm not lost. That stuff about Azarenka in my avatar was a joke.

It's for Kids day so should be fun

Yes I can't wait! Perfect timing.
I like Vesnina althought not as much as I did before cause she's not blonde anymore.
I know it's an exho but I still really want her to win.
