CHICAGO (AP) — Smoking a joint once a week or a bit more apparently doesn't harm the lungs, suggests a 20-year study that bolsters evidence that marijuana doesn't do the kind of damage tobacco does.

The results, from one of the largest and longest studies on the health effects of marijuana, are hazier for heavy users — those who smoke two or more joints daily for several years. The data suggest that using marijuana that often might cause a decline in lung function, but there weren't enough heavy users among the 5,000 young adults in the study to draw firm conclusions.

Still, the authors recommended "caution and moderation when marijuana use is considered."

Marijuana is an illegal drug under federal law although some states allow its use for medical purposes.

The study by researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, and the University of Alabama at Birmingham was released Tuesday by the Journal of the American Medical Association.

The findings echo results in some smaller studies that showed while marijuana contains some of the same toxic chemicals as tobacco, it does not carry the same risks for lung disease.

And the brain?

My thoughts as well. I have some friends who use it daily and they are FUCKED UP. So this study is pretty much pointless.

Yeap, the brain damage is inevitable, especially if on daily use. No research needed there, I have seen enough proof to gather that by myself!

where's the study proving the alleged brain damage? WebMD, more credible than anonymous TF posters, says different. and they're citing an actual study (http://www.webmd.com/mental-health/news/20030701/heavy-marijuana-use-doesnt-damage-brain).

too much of anything will mess you up.

Why do you need a study when I'm sure we all have friends who are fucked up from weed? I have a friend who literally goes insane when he's high. He starts crying, screaming that Katie the baker is going to come kill him. Even when he's sober he's terrified of this baker. I have another friend who has mental problems because of weed, along with other friends who have problems thanks to smoking weed.

All that being said, I don't have a problem with the stuff. A lot of my friends smoke the stuff so I'm used to being around it.

'cause scientific study is more believable than stories about me & my friend joe.

your friend has issues with paranoia, weed won't help with that. take him to a shrink.

Sometimes people abuse substances because they are fucked up, not the other way around. Maybe your friends would be fucked up even if they stopped smoking ;)
I actually know a university professor of mathematics who smokes weed daily, and his brain is really still in great condition. Long term effects of marijuana smoking are still extremely controversial....

Marijuana is pretty harmless if used wisely :D

It's already been proven that it is not as bad as alcohol or tobacco, yet it's still illegal.

Exactly. :worship:

Everyone reacts to it differently. Some people let it ruin their lives, but others use it to live a more productive/enjoyable life.

I agree and the key is, like many other things, moderation. If you smoke 50 joints a day there's no doubt there will be adverse effects, just like if you drink 2 litres of beer a day, eat 2 jars of nutella a day, smoke 30 cigarettes a day, etc...
I seriously think that smoking weed responsibly has very few adverse effects on the brain
