There are quite a few youngsters in the top 200, looking to make it to the top 100. Plus another ones yet to get there, so I think it'll be about 15.

16 made it in last year ;) Iryna Bremond wasnt counted in the number yet.

To sum up the players of the FP:

Minella, 26 yo. Luxembourg veteran that played a very full schedule for the first time in her career, playing many (31!) tournaments in 2011. Hasn't got much points to defend until April, so she might make it. Then again I expect her to drop out soon after that. Her overall abilities seem too limited.

Tsurenko, 22 yo, will almost make it for sure. Shows great improvement, especially last year. It might take a while though since she defends an AO R2 (As a qualifier).'

Panova, 22 yo. Seems like she's been on tour for ages already. Finally raised to a higher level the 2nd half of 2011, having great results on the ITF tour. Already played a competitive match against Bartoli. If she does well in Australia she might make it surprisingly soon.

Doi, 20 yo. The young Japanese rarely beats anyone ranked higher than her. Excells mainly on grass. I'd say it depends on some lucky (GS) draws if she will make the top 100 next year.

Sema, 23 yo. Experienced Japanese that doesn't earn many points outside of Japan. Suffers strange losses to nobodies once in a while. Her making top 100 would be a shock.

Diatchenko, 21 yo. Only played 16 tournaments in 2011 due to a quiet first half of the year. Therefore might (and will, imo) make it very soon. Her match against Danka at Wimbledon showed her potential.

Robson, 17 yo. The hyped British girl will definitely make top 100 if she plays a full schedule next year. Has some promising results to prove her potential already.

Luzhanska, 27 yo US-based Ukrainian veteran that mainly gathered her points on the USTA-tour but never broke through. Has a lot to defend in early 2012, so I predict she will drop out of top 200 again.

Savinykh, the 20 yo Russian had a very solid 2011. She will play in Australia for the first time and if she continues her progress from last year she can make the top 100 too.

Riske, 21 yo American who already has a CH of 104 but dropped on the ranks. Seems to be on the right track again after a convincing row of ITF tournaments in France in oct-nov. But her game seems suited for grass and indoors only. Will that be enough? Imo she has the abilities for it.

Other dark horses (in order of likeliness):
Kristina Mladenovic, 18.
Caroline Garcia, 18.
Timea Babos, 18.
Reka-Luca Jani, 20.
Jana Cepelova, 18.
Ajla Tomljanovic, 18.
Paula Ormaechea, 19.
Monica Puig, 18.
Garbiñe Muguruza, 18.

She will be out of action till late spring/summer, so top 100 in 2012 seems very unlikely.

LAV and Babos are in a good position to move into the top 100 soon.

There are a lot of players around 70-130 playing in Monterrey and Memphis this week which should see quite a lot of players switching around.

Entering top 100: Hampton (probably), Babos if she wins 1r Monterrey

Re-entering top 100: Bratchikova (in 2r Monterrey)

Dropping out of top 100: Marino, maybe Johansson

Not coming back to top 100 yet: Watson, Barrois, probably Cornet, Jovanovski

Moving up: Larcher de Brito

Stalled for now: Robson

Fading from contention: Tsurenko, Vandeweghe, Dominguez Lino, Zhang, Rodina (unlikely to repeat sf Memphis)

It looks to me that there are going to be quite a few players spending a few weeks in the top 100 this year, but it will be far harder to get a place and keep it for the rest of the year. Panova stands a good chance of keeping her place for some months as she has few points to defend before the summer.

What about Ying-Ying Duan?
As long as I can remember, the cut-off for a "contender" has always been top 130 (unless there's a limit of 10 at a time).

Obviously Torro-Flor didn't make it to the top 100 by losing in qualifying last week.
She did by winning a local 25K in which she was the top seed (on clay, needless to say) the week before, which like any 10-25K tourney was calculated only a week later (22/10 instead of 15/10).

. She won a 75K and a 50K and two 25K tournaments this year, reaching MD in Wimbledon and now she reaches another 75K-final. In Quebec and Luxembourg she could win one round in a WTA-tournament as well.

You realise this is the exact same number of Top 100 wins that Mladenovic, Torro-Flor and Davis have this year, who also recently broke Top 100?

You're right. I just thought it seemed like an unusually low numberat first but after a bit of research I can see it's about right. My bad *needs to follow ITFs more*

Yes.
Exactly a year ago, Cadantu very nearly made the top 100 without playing a MD in any WTA event and with zero top 100 wins (got to #104 in October, then made first tour MD in Luxembourg by beating Barthel [first top 100 win] and beat Yakimova R1 to get in).

Maria should make the top 100 in the 1st QTR of 2013 ( hopefully her forms remains strong ) as she has very few pts to defend
