Since its the off-season, let's discuss who do you feel has the most beautiful/fluid service motions. Watching the Stosur vs Peng exhibition match, I realized how labored Peng's was compared to Stosur.

Bartoli's would take the cake for least aesthetically pleasing, no pun intended. But in general, i find abbreviated serves tend to be less fluid.

Coco Vandeweghe has a beautiful fluid kicker with a terrific shoulder turn and knee bend, and no hitch anywhere in her motion. It really pops, too. If the rest of her game were as good as her serve (and if she lost a lot of weight), she could be really dangerous in tournaments.

*cue Williamsova fans *

I also agree with the ones saying Vandeweghe and '04 Pova. Bartoli's service motion might be aesthetically unpleasing, but she gets some of the best racquet head acceleration during her serve of the entire Tour. I would also say Marino has a beautiful and excellent serve (sometimes those two don't always go together).

Serena's, Venus's (first serve).

Lindsay's was gloriously fluid. I loved that elegant shaping of her left wrist as she threw the ball. Pierce's motion was also very theatrical and gorgeous.

One of the service motions i love is Voskoboeva's. One of the most ornate service motions i've ever seen.

Julia Goerges

Very crisp and fluid motions. Easy on the eye and at the same time effective. She has less power than many of the big and powerful servers but yet, on average, Julia hits more aces than most of them. And like Federer she takes it quick (no stupidly slow rituals and time-delaying tricks and antics

I haven't read through the thread but I might be one of the few to actually like Bartoli's motion. I mean, it cracks me up too, but I find it quite esthetically pleasing at the same time, especially since she is really hitting her spots with it as well.

Other than the obvious Serena GOAT serve, I'll go with Lindsay who also had a GOAT serve. Peak Stevenson had a cool serve.

EDIT: Stevenson's serve was only cool, not really beautiful like Serena's or Lindsay's.

I love Venus's serve motion, especially the starting position. As for Lindsay, I'm not a fan of the bending of her right wrist before she tosses the ball. Patty's remind me abit of Stosur. On the other hand, no offense but Nadal's service expression looks like he's had a stroke.

People are going to disagree with me, considering all the technical flaws, but I always thought Sharapova's pre-injury serve was very nice to watch. I even like the high ball toss :O .

And people are really gonna disagree with my like of Bartoli's Arm swing right before she goes after the ball. The rest of her service motion is odd (though not as "cringe worthy" as some people say it is) but the way she brings her arm back is quite nice to watch, in my opinion. Acting like she is strung out on Meth inbetween points, on the other hand, can get quite annoying but I can understand her motivation for acting that way (keep herself pumped up).

Of corse the most effortless, best flowing serve is Serena's (no suprise it is the most effective as well). I also like watching Stosur toss the ball a foot behind her head when hitting heavily spun serves (mainly because I wonder how she doesnt destroy her shoulder by doing that so often).

Serena's is technically flawless but it's not as beautiful as some of the other serves on tour. Mary Pierce, Sharapova and pre-brainfart Ivanovic have/had beautiful motions. Zvonareva's is gorgeous too.

beautiful motion but woeful effects :sobbing:

This.

Even when I hated Hingis tremendously and I knew nothing about tennis, I still had a weird attraction to that serve, and tried to practice it in air. There's a sense of perfection about all of Stinki's shots, particularly the serve, despite how unimpressive the result was - second serve included.

I would add: Steffi Graf, Serena Williams. Steffi's was just drop dead gorgeous with the high ball toss and her preparation before she hits the ball. Serena is just a stunning example of weight transfer. It's explosive+perfect, which Hingis couldn't manage.

Overrated: Crapova (especially), Davenport to a certain extent. But then people are voting for Venus, so what do I know?

Best ever service motion belongs to Serena obviously, and the best ever server in WTA history is Serena. In fact, most former and current tennis players say that Serena has the best 1st and 2nd serves in WTA history. Serena's service game has very much helped her get to where she is currently, because it has been so reliable as of December 2013, especially when she needed it to be.

Lindsay had a very nice powerful 1st serve, Venus has a powerful 1st serve when it's ON, but her 2nd serve, YIKES . Nadia has a nice service motion as well. Ana HAD a very nice service motion and serve at one time, but her ball toss has destroyed that the last several years. Sam has a very nice serve as well when it's ON, but her service can break down more so than Serena's, just like it did vs Jie Zheng last year during their 2nd round match I believe @ the AO Open where Sam came from in front to lose that match, partially because her service game broke down so badly late in the match.

I think Mandy's serve is underrated, she actually gets a lot of power on it indeed. :)

Serena's because it looks so simple and effortless.

Jelena's looked pretty and nice back when it sucked really bad.

I always liked how high Safina tossed her ball because it was pretty to look at, but it sucked as a service technique.

Serena's service motion is perfect.

Thank you, the BEAUTY is in the results.. Just like you have MMA,UFC, you have the show/form karate, show/form kung fu.. Sure, the show\form karate and kung fu is pretty to watch, but that has nothing to do with winning and effectiveness of the action. IMO, this is almost like tennis players with most facebook followers! :)

I thought Dementieva's 2008-Wimbledon 2009 service motion was quite pleasant to watch. Once she started tinkering with it in the US hardcourt season in 2009, it slowly turned into that weird, abbreviated motion she had in 2010.

Mashona Washington, Raluca Olaru and Ai Sugiyama come to mind also.

Definitely.
Remarkable is how rapid after finishing the motion she is ready for the next thing to come up. In this gif it was walking to the net and shake hands after matchpoint. The motion itself doesn`t bring her out of balance for a blink of the eye.

I mean, just look at that thing. Yes, it's powerful. But it's powerful because it's a study in efficiency, in continuous, completely uninterrupted fluid motion, upward and forward. Zero hitches, all beginning with the perfect ball toss, in the exact right position to allow for that continuous motion.

It's a nice action I agree, and the first serve is actually ok, she can win outright points off it...however, the 2nd serve is just a puffball.
