Welcome to the A-Z listing of Australian tennis players.

While some modern players are listed below, my initial emphasis will be on adding players from the amateur era.

Although some of the data in here comes from other threads (such as Married Names) - and thanks for everyone's contributions - the majority of information here is from my own research.

Where possible, each biography will contain details of birth, death and marriage and a summary of their tennis achievements.

"Italicised quotes" about some players are mainly from Paul Metzler's 1979 book "Great Players of Australian Tennis".

The Australian colony or state(s) which the player represented in their tennis career are also listed:

NSW New South Wales
VIC Victoria
SA South Australia
QLD Queensland
WA Western Australia
TAS Tasmania
ACT Australian Capital Territory
NT Northern Territory

Over time I'll be adding biographical details to each of the profiles (I've only quickly done a few so far) and adding more names that I've overlooked today.

Any questions or corrections are very welcome. Please feel free to post any other information or trivia which could be included within these individual bios.

The first Australian woman to reach the quarter-finals (1925), then the semi-finals (1928) of an overseas Grand Slam tournament in her only two overseas tours. Rated as #3 in the world for 1928, this was the highest ranking earned by an Australian woman until Margaret Smith (Court) in the 1960s.

She retired from singles play after her win in the 1930 Australian singles title, but won eight of the nine doubles tournaments she entered over the next two years, including the 1931 Australian Championship.

After giving birth in 1931, she won her final doubles championship in January 1933, playing with her dear friend Louie Bickerton. Within a week, Akhurst would be dead; the result of an ectopic pregnancy.

At her best in doubles, she won five Australian Championships (and reached another seven finals), two Italian Championships and made the Wimbledon and French finals. She also won the Australian mixed title in 1958 with Bob Howe.

Hawton was ranked in the top 8 in Australia for 15 consecutive years and reached the semi finals of the Australian Championships six times but never progressed further. In 1955, Mary ran the eventual champion, Beryl Penrose to 8-6 in the 3rd set in the QF.

In 1956 she lost another heart breaker to eventual finalist Thelma Long in the QFs. Hawton won the first nine games of the match, then Long won the next nine! From 0-3 down Hawton staged a comeback and after saving match points at 4-5, led 7-6. On a crucial point, Mary missed the line by inches with a backhand volley which allowed Long to squeeze out a victory 9-7. In 1959 she upset top seeded Lorraine Coghlan in the QF, but her quest for a national singles title crashed in the next round. After leading 3-0 against Renee Schuurman she lost the next 12 games and the match.

Carmen Juliette BORELLI (NSW)
Born circa 1932
Married Brian Reginald TOBIN on 2 February 1954

The youngest of five daughters, Carmen was a good junior and club player in Melbourne. She was Mo Connolly's first opponent during the American's Grand Slam in 1953:

"Somebody had to be the first victim in the slam" laughed Carmen in 2003 "and that was me. It didn't take long (6-0, 6-1). They put us on centre court, which was a bit nerve-racking, because I knew it was going to be a disaster.

"I'd taken the train out from town. Those were amateur days, no cars transporting the players, and I had to take the afternoon off from my job at Slazenger's. Maureen was pleasant, but all business."

"I just didn't want to embarrass myself out there. I was 20 and had a Victorian ranking. I'd keep the ball in play for a few strokes, but she got all the points. The embarrassment came when I got my only game, halfway through the second set. The clapping from the stands was loud and long."

Uniquely, she was a part of all three of Australia's international tennis team tours (1925, 1928 and 1938). In 1925, she starred for Australia with good wins over Kea Bouman, Didi Vlasto and Marion Jessup in addition to pushing Suzanne Lenglen in France. Despite the tour concentrating on team matches, she won singles championships at three overseas tournaments and made the quarter-finals at Wimbledon.

In 1928, she beat Molla Mallory at the French and played a significant role in Australia's undefeated run of international matches. At the end of the year, she was rated in the world's top ten.

In 1938, aged 37 and the mother of two children, she represented Scotland against the Australian women. She returned to Melbourne in 1940, with her children, a son Bill (born 1930) and a daughter Mary (born 1933) after the outbreak of World War II.

"She was of medium height and slenderness and based her game on a flat forehand drive that penetrated deep into either corner. She indulged in no slices or spins and her backhand was below championship standard – but judging from her results few could find it."

Gladys BROWNELL (TAS)

Cherie BUBB (NSW)

Lorna BULL (NSW)

Mrs Utz had success as a racehorse owner in the 30s. Racing under the pseudonym of 'Miss Lorna Doone', her star performer was 'Sylvandale' who earned her stakes of over £7000 pounds (equivalent to millions of dollars today) in the 1934 season. The horse won the Australian Cup, ran second in the Derby and was third in the Melbourne Cup, rare achievements for a female owner of the time. She later had successes with 'Billy Boy', 'Prospector'and others. Following an illness, probably heart trouble, to Dr Leslie Utz in 1940, he was warned by doctors not to watch races involving his wife's horses. As a result, Lorna sold her entire stable.

Married (2) Gordon Stanley GREEN 10 September 1990

In 1957/58, Coghlan had split the four most important domestic championships with English visitor Angela Mortimer. In the final of the Australian singles, she lost to Mortimer; the Australian's sounder stroke production just falling short against Mortimers shrewd tactical sense. Coghlan’s best chance of an Australian title was probably in 1959 but, top-seeded, she lost to Mary Hawton 6-4 4-6 6-0 in the quarter finals. Coghlan won the Wimbledon mixed doubles in 1958 with Bob Howe and the German singles the same year.

Thelma Dorothy COYNE (NSW/VIC)
Born 14 October 1918
Married Maurice Newton LONG 30 January 1941 (Divorced 1946/47)

Overshadowed somewhat by her doubles partner Nancye Bolton and known internationally as the ‘Australian No. 2’, Thelma Long was unlucky to have only one international tour before the age of 30.

In 1952, Long won her first Australian singles title at the age of 33. Seeded 7 at Wimbledon that year, she took a set off Maureen Connolly in the QF, one of only two sets Connolly ever dropped at the All England Lawn Tennis Club.

"Sturdy and strong with a matching solid all-court game. Serve, volley, forehand and backhand – her stroke-making was second to none."

Mary also had two sisters - Marie & Helen (Nellie) who also competed successfully in Table Tennis as well as on the tennis court. It is often unclear which of the sisters achieved success in events around this time due to the convention of only stating 'Miss Dransfield' in newspaper stories and results, but it appears that Mary Dransfield may be the better singles player.

In 1904 she took a break from the game due to illness. She was rated the #2 player in Australia, behind the invincible Rose Payten, but it appears the two never played - despite both being their state's champion player for most of the decade.

Edna HARRY (VIC)

Joan Marcia HARTIGAN (NSW)
Born 6 June 1912
Died 31 August 2000
Married Hugh Moxall BATHURST 13 April 1947

Remembered as 'one of the most popular and gracious' of women champions, Joan Hartigan was the first Australian woman to twice make the semi-finals at Wimbledon. She first came to attention in 1931, winning the Australian junior championship and was selected to tour New Zealand and, in 1934, was approved by the LTAA to travel overseas to compete at Wimbledon. Unseeded, she beat the #4 and #5 seeds before falling to top-ranked Helen Jacobs in the SF.

Most Australian players at the time were fortunate to gain one, perhaps two, overseas tours in their careers, but Joan followed up her 1934 trip, travelling with her father (who was on business) in 1935. As a result, she again made the Wimbledon semi-finals, beating top-seeded Dorothy Round before falling to the legendary Helen Wills-Moody. As a result of these fine performances and other tournament wins, she gained her second World Top Ten ranking.

Though she still enjoyed tournament success in England in 1938, Hartigan was not considered good enough to make the official four-member Australian team that year. In 1947, aged 35 and travelling on her honeymoon, she was still able to reach R3 of Wimbledon.

"A versatile player, never at a loss for a stroke to play. She had two distinctly different forehands, one an overspin drive for rallying and hitting winners and the other – little seen in those days – a sliced approach shot that she followed to the net, where she volleyed well. She had a good smash too."

She played with good concentration, determinedly covering the extra yards across the baseline that the two-handed shot imposed on her. Her double-handed backhand was not played as a solitary king-hit since her longer swinging forehand was equally as good".

"Strong and of medium height and built, she used an Extreme Eastern grip. She came from the NSW Hardcourt Association, where in addition to a sharply cut serve she had developed a strong downward chop as her forehand stroke. On hardcourts it was a reliable shot and she also had good touch with it. On a grasscourt it was a penetrating devil that skidded low, and as well Mrs Buttsworth used her touch most effectively and frequently played dropshots.

Ellen Montgomerie Mayne (VIC)

Born 10 October 1860 in Nynere Tal (modern Nainital), India.
Died 10 October 1955 in Shaldon, Devon, England

Daughter of Major Robert Graham Mayne, a British officer serving in India, and Eliza Ann Landale. The Mayne family, of Scottish origin, served in the British army for several generations in India. The death of Ellen’s father in 1865 probably prompted the family to move back to Australia, as Eliza had been born in Tasmania. Ship records indicate they landed in Melbourne in 1875, where Ellen lived for the next 20 years.

Ellen may have started to play tennis as early as 1881. At a cavalry ball that year she appeared in costume described as “lawn tennis.”. At some point in the 1880s she moved to the state of Victoria and from 1886 until late 1893 won the New South Wales and Victorian state title several times over. In fact she either won or was in finalist in those two events every year during that time.

In December of 1893 Ellen moved to India to live with her brother Colonel Mayne. It is uncertain which brother this was exactly, as two of her her brothers were colonels there; Richard Charles Graham Mayne (1852-1939) and George Nesbitt Mayne (1854-1932). She lived in India for the next dozen years before playing in the London Championships of 1906. She entered Wimbledon in 1906 but defaulted in the first round without playing.

An 1911 census shows her residing in Surrey. She would live in England the rest of her life, with a visit to Australia in 1933.

New South Wales in 1887, 1889-1890, and 1893. Victorian Chmps in 1888 and 1891

"Using a strong and short swing for service and groundstrokes she has little that can go wrong in her game. She is an Eastern player and has a penetrating sidespin forehand shot to her off-side, deep to her opponent's backhand corner. However, using underspin on both sides, she has a hard time against a net player of about her own general standard of play".

"Sturdy and strong, she hit so hard that she was the first woman to be described as playing like a man. She had all three modern serves, using slice to the right-court forehand, flat down the middle, and topspin to the left-court backhand. She volleyed aggressively and had a full-swimming and slightly-rolled Eastern forehand, and on top of this was the famous Mall Molesworth backhand and its stream of outright winners. She liked to play this shot from somewhere above net height and hit it fast and flat, consciously making full use of her left arm as well (for balance and power, that is, and not as any form of two-hander)."

Fay Patricia 'Pat' PARMENTER (NSW)

Married Anthony John RANDALL in 1960

From the NSW country town of Maitland, Pat was also an Australian squash champion.

Magdalene Jessie 'Maisie' or 'May' PARR (SA)
Born 1 May 1864
Died May 1948 - Adelaide SA

Six-time SA Champion (1892 to 1899), she was also a finalist in the Victorian Championships (1894).

Returning from England in 1881, where she learned to play tennis with her sister after watching games, she joined the Adelaide Tennis Club and won the club championship in 1883.

She won her first SA singles championship in 1892, aged 27, and her last in 1899, aged 34. She was runner-up in 1911, aged 46. She won her last doubles title, in 1907, at the age of 42. In 1931, the 66 year old played in the South Australian championships but restricted herself to handicap doubles.

In 1909, when she was well past her best, a critic wrote "Miss Parr is a fine example of strong, active women. Her play, though she is a veteran in years, is a marvel of vigor and dash; and though beaten by safer methods, her game is the most attractive to watch. Like Miss Payten, she goes for winning strokes but, unlike her, she misses many."

Beryl PENROSE (NSW)
Born 22 December 1930 - Sydney
Married James Arthur F COLLIER 1957

A somewhat controversial selection in the 1952 Australian tour of South Africa, Penrose justified her selection by being the only player not to lose a rubber in the team matches. She then travelled to Europe and won the Welsh singles.

In 1955 was seeded 7th at Wimbledon and justified this by reaching the QF only to lose to Louise Brough. Beryl played most of the top post-war players during her career - eg Hart, Fry, Connolly - but rated Brough as her toughest opponent.

Beryl's grandson, James Duckworth, is a current ATP/ITF player.

1958 Queensland Champion

Daphne had her best Australian Championship in 1956, thrashing reigning champion and world top-tenner Beryl Penrose 6-2 6-1 in the QF. On the heavy grass court, Seeney placed her left handed shots and used the drop shot very well.

Officials were reluctant to stage the SF matches on Centre Court, but Seeney was part of a 'sit down protest' that forced the issue to the satisfaction of women players and supporters. Half way through the 2nd set, just when it seemed she was getting into the match, Seeney dislocated her right knee. She insisted on continuing with it heavily strapped, and even won a few games before Mary Carter finished off the match 6-3 7-5. Seeney travelled overseas that year, reaching German and Wimbledon doubles finals.

Pamela 'Pam' SOUTHCOMBE (VIC)
Born circa 1934
Married Howard WEARE

Seeded fourth, Southcombe lost in the 1953 AO QF to Maureen Connolly.

"I thought," recalls Pam, "she's 18, just a girl like me. It shouldn't be too bad. But she was No. 1 in the world and I quickly found out why. But I wasn't nervous because I felt it was great to be on the court with the best, an experience any tennis player would want.

"I was working downtown as a secretary, and took the train to Kooyong. She'd had a practice hit with Harry Hopman (the indispensable Australian Davis Cup captain). He and his wife, Nell, advised her. But I didn't have time for that. We were scheduled for an outside court, one with no seats. But it was crowded with a few hundred standing.

"Maureen and I walked together down the slope from the clubhouse. She was civil - we chatted - but I could see she was very focused."

"She hit flat, but used sidespin, and had an excellent drop shot. And, remember, these were the wooden racquet, one-hand backhand days. I think she'd be fine with today's racquets"

South Australian Champ 1954, 1955

One year out of juniors Staley reached the final of Australian Championships in 1954 only to lose to veteran Thelma Long. Her boyfriend Lew Hoad, on leave from the National Service training, was in the stands and this, plus unwanted media attention about their relationship, was a possible reason why Staley was unable to produce her stylish best in the final.

In 1955 during an overseas tour, Staley ‘snuck off’ from the team just prior to Wimbledon and married Hoad. Team manager Adrian Quist and LTA President Norman Brookes were furious with the Hoads and with men's team manager Harry Hopman. Hopman had supported Lew and given Jenny away at the ceremony. The Australian and overseas press had a field day when the story broke!

The first Australian woman to reach the final of an overseas Grand Slam singles title (US - 1938) and the top Aussie player for around fifteen years (1937-1952). Bolton might normally have been expected to peak as a player during the World War II years of 1940-45, so missed out on numerous opportunities to improve her already impressive list of championships.

Despite winning 10 Australian doubles titles with Thelma Long, Bolton was only able to enter five overseas slam tournaments with her long-time partner. And of these five, the pair had to default in three of them.

GRAND SLAM RECORD
Australian Champion 1937, 1940, 1946, 1947, 1948, 1951
Wimbledon QF 1948
French R3 1938
US Championships F 1938

"Tallish, in short skirt and stiff-brimmed white hat, and on hot days a knotted handkerchief round her throat, she made a distinctive and dominating figure on court. Her forehand was a well-behind the handle form of Eastern (approaching Extreme Eastern), and instead of wrapping her thumb round the handle in the normal way, she laid it along the handle's top surface. There was no advantage in that; it was just her own way. A hard hitter anywhere, she fairly pounded high-bouncing forehands.

Well....I said it was just a start, but that's nearly 350 players listed so far. Whew!

During my research, I've stumbled across name/age/other details for some New Zealand players too. Since there's no specific thread in which to post these, (particularly if they never married) I might as well post them here for those who are interested:

Gladys Myrtle (Myrtle) ANDERSON (RSA/NZL)
married William John 'Bill' MELODY (NZL) in 1916

May ANDREW
Married Dr Geoffrey MYERS in February 1933

Eva Marian BAIRD
Born 1888
Married Sydney Craven HODGES in 1919

Nancy Ella CURTIS
Born 1894
Married Walter F STURMAN on 23 April 1924

Nina Mataura DOUSLIN
Born 1864
Married Cornelius O'LEARY in 1910

NZL BDM records show she had a daughter, Gladys DOUSLIN, in 1894 with no record of a father.

May Constance GORE
Married James MARCHBANKS on 18 August 1897

Sisters May and Olive also had a brother, C St G GORE, who played tennis competitively.

Olive GORE
Married Dr Douglas H BETT circa 1916

Hilda Maude HITCHINGS
Born 1866

Born with just one arm (the left) and she "serves in a wonderfully clever manner by holding her racket with three fingers of her only hand, and a slight toss of the ball which is held by the remaining finger and thumb, followed by a quick twisty tap with the racket, results in a fast low service which is anything but easy to take."

She was unusually tall (5' 11) and had a sister Una who also played in NZ. Hilda lived in London from the 1897 to 1906 and had some tournament play. Apparently around August 1904 she won the Ladies' Silver Challenge Cup of the St Quintin Lawn Tennis Club, decisively beating Miss Pocock. Her first tournament in England was the Chichester tournament in 1897 where she was defeated in the handicap singles.

She was also a fine singer, pianist and painter as well as being talented at needlework, making all her own dresses.

Her sister Una also played in NZ tournaments.

Lelia May Arita (Arita) HOWE
Born 1904
Married Robert Peers ADAMS 1927
sometimes spelled Areta

Sarah Mary LANCE
Born Hythe, England circa 1871 (I suspect earlier)
Married Ernest Denton TANNER in 1887 (Divorced 1908)

Around 1885 she emigrated from England where, supposedly, she had achieved success in many large tennis tournaments. Her husband, cricketer Ernest Tanner, sued for divorce in 1908 naming Charles Uniacke as co-respondent.

Constance Palgrave MARTYN
Born 12 May 1864, Palgrave, Suffolk ENGLAND
Married Lionel Augustus ABRAHAM in England on 19 June 1890
Died 3 October 1942

Known as a champion horse-woman and golfer as well as a tennis player and charity worker. Received the OBE in 1919 for her work during WWI.

Dulcie NICHOLLS
Married F GALLAGHER circa 1938

Kathleen Mary NUNNELEY
Born 16 September 1872 - Leicestershire, England
Died 28 September 1956 - Wellington, NZL

Allegedly her English tournament successes, prior to emigrating to New Zealand in late 1894 included:

1891 Ladies Handicap Brighton, 5 Prizes at South of England Tournament, Eastbourne
1892 Prizes at Liverpool, Nottingham, Leicester, Northampton and others
1893 Open Singles at Nottingham, Won Blackheath, Won Beckenham, Won Wellingborough
1894 Won Nottingham (d Miss Jackson 60 61), Won Nottingham Handicap (d Mrs Hillyard)

Isabel Sarah REES (NZL)
Born circa 1867/68
Died July 1894.

She won the Champion Ladies Tennis Singles at Dunedin in 1892 and at Christchurch in 1890/91. She was the finest horsewoman in the colony and a fine all round athlete. Rees died, after 7 days illness and inflammation of the brain, aged just 27.

Mary Hamilton 'May' SPIERS
married Harry Mitchell DYKES in 1929

Mary Anastasia Camillus 'May' TRACY
Married Noel McNair THOMPSON on 1 January 1930

Irene POOLE
Married HATHERLEY circa 1939/40

Lucy POWDRELL
Born 2 June 1882 - Patea, Taraniki NZL
Died 6 September 1958 - Patea, Taraniki NZL
Married Edward Cecil Burdett WHITEHEAD on 13 November 1912

Margaret POWDRELL
Born 1875, Kakaramea, NZL
Died 25 March 1954
Married (1) George Vater PEARCE in 1893 - Separated 1917, Divorced 1920
Married (2) Neil Bruce BARKMAN in 1922

Her divorce from politician George Pearce in 1920 caused a scandal.

Katherine Lucia VAN ASCH
Married Edward MENLOVE in 1905

Sister Annie also played in NZ tournaments.

OK, hopefully that should do it for now....

I'll leave these last couple of posts for the time being, just in case I've forgotten something that should be listed up the top of this thread..

PS - if you notice a significant player who I seem to have missed or if there's an Aussie player you'd like to know more about, please post your suggestions/requests. GT

Yeah - that could be something to do. Still not sure - I was going to sleep on it, but even though the first coffee has kicked in, I'm still umming and ahhing.

I could also use them to list some of the "mystery women" - eg the Dransfields - who are still driving me crazy. I could list my suspicions (eg that there are three sisters - Nellie, Mary and Margaret - and that Margaret might well have been known as Peggy - the 'P Dransfield' that you sometimes see) and perhaps others might be able to add their own info/thoughts to (hopefully) help work out who's who.

Though (at this moment) I reckon I might just include them in the general A-Z with a 'work in progress' type text box listing any assumptions/discussion points. Let me know what you think.

Yesterday I was mulling the idea of making this thread an 'A-Z of Australian Tennis History' including tournament notes/honour rolls, facts about the development of the game downunder etc. Then I figured even the A-Z of players was ambitious enough for a start. I think I may eventually do a 'History' thread but I'll think about it a bit more first.

Anyway - time for more coffee!

Great work, Graham. I see you even found the first names of the Chenery sisters, who played in some of the Continental (Swiss) tournaments circa 1910. I knew they were from Australia.

Your thread looks fine as it stands - no need to make things too complicated.

Keep up the good work.

Yeah the names seem to fit well as A. Chenery kept playing in Australia in 1890 after her sister would have had to travel to the UK for her marriage.

I wonder why the sister (was it just one?) who played in SUI kept using her maiden name, though I guess plenty of players at the time used faked names anyway.

Just in case anyone wished to do some real digging-here is more on Le Messurier.

Messurier's papers are in the State Archives of South Australia in Adelaide and are described as having “Newspaper cuttings, photographs, programmes, correspondence, and badges relating to Kathleen Le Messurier's tennis career.”

There might be some real gems in the Adelaide archives relating to her.

No Ellis and Marsh are different people (Norma was a very very popular Aussie girl's name in this era). The marriage details for Ellis/Mr Nethersole in the thread are correct.

Norma Marsh (NSW) won the NSW State Junior doubles championship in 1953 and 54, with Alison Paech and they also played in the 1954 Australian (with Norma Ellis seeded in singles at same tournament). That date of birth would be about right.

ETA - Whoops! Andrew beat me to it. Anyway, it made me notice Marsh was missing from the list of names.

Hello GeeTee, I don't know if Miss R.White was australian, but I think it
probable.
I know that she won some minor australian tournaments from 1957 to 1965, and she married Neil Gibson, an australian player who was brother of Joan Gibson Cottrill and nephew of Marjorie Cox, Jack Crawford's wife.
Do you know something more? Her name and date of birth?

Just going back and adding a few of the above (and some more of my own) - thanks to Rollo and Jimbo for extras.

But with this one..
she married Neil Gibson, an australian player who was brother of Joan Gibson Cottrill and nephew of Marjorie Cox, Jack Crawford's wife.
I'm pretty sure Marjorie Cox was an only child, so not sure how she could be an aunt to anybody (unless you mean that Jack Crawford was their uncle - as he had siblings)?

Do you have more info?

On this page

I have read these phrases: "Six time Grand Slam winner Jack Crawford's wife Marjorie Cox Crawford was an Australian finalist and his nephew Neil Gibson and niece Joan Gibson (an Australian quarterfinalist) played Grand Slam singles. Neil's wife R. White Gibson also played Grand Slam singles."

Thanks Jimbo - that clears it up.

That page (or the 'concise dictionary of tennis') is wrong that Wendy Turnbull is daughter of Don Turnbull though.

I'm in two minds as to some of the last list of players, Jimbo. A couple of them I've never heard of and I wonder if some of the more recent ones are significant enough in the scheme of things.

If we take the case of Helen Davis (Mrs Dorricott), I think she only played 1 Australian Open (losing R1 quals) and that was probably her most significant result. I can't remember hearing of her before I googled this morning.

You are right, many players that I have posted in the last list are minor players, as Helen Davis too.
She won many tournaments, but all minors:
Queensland Hard Court Championship 1984
Caboolture Championship 1982
Far North Queensland Championship 1982
Coops Open Tournament 1984, 1987
Dalby Championship 1987
Port Curtis Championship 1983 and 1984
Gympie Championship 1986
South Queensland Championship 1981, 1982
City of Ipswich Championship 1983
Maroochy Championship 1982, 1984
Redcliffe Championship 1983
Rosebowl Tournament 1983, 1984, 1985

Hi Gee Tee:worship:

I found this obit from 2012 on the Kiwi ITF site:

Joyce Rymer (Fitch).

Obituary Joyce Rymer

We are saddened to record the passing of one of our members, Joyce Rymer who died recently after a short illness.

Joyce was a leading Australian tennis player between 1946 and 1951 and became a member of the NZ IC. She was a finalist in the Australian Singles in 1946 and won the doubles that year as well as partnering John Bromwich and reaching the finals four times during the post war period. She was a member of the Last Eight Club.
Joyce retired from tennis in 1951 when she married Aucklander, John Rymer and the couple embarked on their new life in the Anglican ministry. John Rymer, as many of you will know, became Dean of the Auckland and passed away about 8 years ago.

Joyce joined the Parnell Tennis Club, playing Interclub and coaching juniors there. She also helped at the ASB Classic for 20 years in the Ladies’ locker room with Cavell Morgan. She was recognised for her services by Tennis Auckland at the Classic when she retired from the job about 3 years ago.

Annie LAMB (NSW)

First (1885) NSW Champion

Hello all

Annie Lamb possibility

I may have found some reference to a Frances Annie Lamb (born 23/04/1866, died 01/03/1950) who may be the first NSW champion. France had a brother Edward Allister Lamb (died in the Boer war) who played tennis in Sydney before 1900. I have not found a concrete reference to Frances Lamb playing the game though. Frances married John W Newall in 1896 and they moved to England soon after.

EM MAYNE (VIC)

Likely to have been British-born, this early Victorian and NSW Champion moved to India around 1893 (probably with father, Colonel Mayne, who may have been in the British forces). Played in England in 1906 and entered in Wimbledon but defaulted in R1.

Mayne possibilty

Miss Mayne won many titles in Australia. I found an article just before she left Australia in 1893/ 94 which mentions that she was moving to India to live with her brother, Major Mayne. Looking through some Mayne family history a Richard Charles Graham Mayne was in India during this period. Richard had a sister, Ellen Montgomerie, born in 1861 or 1866 in India (depending on web site) and who had lived in Tasmania with her mother and in other parts of Australia before moving back to India.

Not 100% certain but Ellen Montgomerie Mayne's birth date fits and a EM Mayne did play in England in 1906. Any thoughts?

Hello AndrewTas - I don't have much info, but here are some articles that can be quite interesting, though I don't know if they are about that Annie Lamb who was a tennis player.

The first two are about the wedding of "Míss Frances Annie Lamb, younger daughter of Mr. John de Villiers Lamb, of Maroomba, Chatswood, [North Sydney] and Mr John Lightfoot Newall, of Forest Hall, Ongar, Essex, England", that took place on 28 Oct. 1896. According to both articles "the bride was well-known in Sydney as a most philantropic worker" and was "for many years the hon. secretary of the Thirlmere Home for Consumptives."

http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/139733276

The last article mentions that Miss Annie Lamb was a honorary secretary of the Thirlmere Home for Consumptives.
http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/13924237

I still don't know if she was that "famous" tennis player, but at least I managed to find that Frances Annie Lamb was also known as "Annie Lamb".

Best regards,
LKK

Ding-ding-ding :clap2::clap2::clap2:

It's her!

In Trove there is an artcle about an 1881 Cavalry Ball in Tasmania. It mentions Miss Ellen Mayne and-get this-her costume. Her costume was 'lawn tennis".

It's got to be her for certes. Confusingly there IS another Ellen Mayne (the one born in 1866 in India. Mayne was her married name however, being born a Miss Moffatt.

The other giveaway is that Ellen Montgomerie Mayne (born 1860) went back and forth between India, England, and Australia. There are passenger records to prove it. All of these relate to her.

I will post a redone biography and place it in this thread and the biographical dictionary. If GeeTee comes back and wants to reedit he can-I think he would want us to post it here too.

Actually I will PM him him about this.

Great find Andrew Tas!

Here is a reworked bio on Miss Mayne. What do you think?

MAYNE, ELLEN (Ellen Montgomerie Mayne)
Australia (Victoria)/United Kingdom

Titles Won
New South Wales in 1887, 1889-1890, and 1893. Victorian Chmps in 1888 and 1891

Finalist
New South Wales in 1888. Victorian Chmps in 1886 and 1892

In sources from her era she was listed as Miss EM Mayne.

[Thanks to Andrew Tas, who discovered her identity].

Nice work Andrew & Rollo.

I hadn't been able to track down which of the regimental Colonels & Majors or Surgeon Maynes (there seemed to have been a whole brigade of them!) in India it was myself. The father might have died in Melbourne in the early 1900s from memory.

Anyway, very nice to see another identified name on the list. :)

PS - also nice work Andrew/LKK on Annie Lamb :)
