View Full Version : TT Rule Change Poll - Retirements (Poll 2)

Chris 84
Nov 16th, 2011, 12:36 PM
This poll is to decide WHEN retirements are to be counted in tt. If there is a majority winner, then that rule change option will be adopted. If there is no majority winner, then then the option(s) with the fewest votes will be removed and a new poll will be carried out. (Yes, this is a bit of a pain in the neck, but better to make changes like this democratically and with as much backing from tt players as possible so as to minimise complaints and people feeling the rules are unfair).

this poll has 4 options

1/ retirements count for matches after the first point of a match has been played (ie, ALL retirements count, walkovers do not)

2/ retirements count only after 1 set has been played

3/ retirements count at any point when the winning player is leading by a set (eg 6-3 3-3 counts, 6-3 3-6 4-0 does NOT count)

4/ retirements count at any point when the winning player is leading by a set OR by 2 clear games in the final set (eg 6-3 3-3 counts, 6-3 3-6 4-0 counts, 6-3 3-6 4-3 does NOT count)

Only those with a current tt ranking will have their vote counted.
If you make a mistake with your vote, then post in the thread and your true vote will be counted.
The poll will close on Monday, which should be enough time for everyone who wants to vote to vote.

If anyone doesn't understand anything here, then ask in the thread and someone should be able to answer your questions. Thank you.

Michael!

I guess those who voted for Option 2) or 3) should change their votes and decide whether they would prefer 1) or 4) as it seems that it will be decided between those two options only ....:p

yes, i'll PM them if neither of the high scoring 2 options reach 50%, and those people will then vote in the thread.

I would dislike option 1 so much :sobbing: Losing a crucial TT match on 1-1 Ret. :sobbing:

Imagine a 6-3 3-6 4-3 40-15 and ret. :o

Way more unlikely :oh: Btw that would not count.

as it looks as though there will be no clear winner by the time the poll closes tomorrow, i have sent PMs to the 8 people who voted for options 2 and 3 to vote again. their votes will determine whether option 1 or option 4 is successful.

I voted option 3 so I change to option 4 (which I actually wanted to vote for at the beginning)

Looks enough for Option 1 to prevail (past 50%).

because sometimes I will predict someone to retire...

Great!
Happy about this result, now we can safely pick against Stevenson or Morita and expect to win point for it!

Matches were someone retired donīt count for SR but also still not valid for TB decisions, right?

I mean, for example, Player A and B have same number of right picks, SRs and incorrect 2-1 SRs

player A:

tb1: williams 64 63
tb2: wozniacki 64 63

player B:

tb1: azarenka 64 63
tb2: li 64 63

results:
tb1: williams 64 53 ret.
tb2: li 62 76

=> player b wins on tb2

yes, retirement matches do not count for SRs or for TBs

I doubt complaining about the retirement rule will end with this, especially if the rule goes against someone. ;) With over 100 people ranked, it is regrettable only 45 people voted. But we will see.

i couldn't agree more. i posted it in tt-related threads, but short of PMing every ranked player, there wasn't much else that could be done, i guess.

MTF uses this same retirement rule and I can never remember anyone complaining over there.

yeah, clearly plenty of tt players didn't know or else didn't really care about the result. the polls were up in the tt thread for 5 days each, and it was posted about in the rule change thread and in all of the challenger tt tourneys that were on when the polls were active. sorry you couldn't vote, but like i said, it was hard to do much else.

at least you'd have voted for option 1 anyway though.
