OK guys no need for this; I know some people haven't been the best managers and had trouble running events, but let's hope practice makes perfect. As for discouraging less capable managers from signing up, we can consider some penalty, like; if a manager doesn't update scores after at least half of the rounds played during a tournament, he/she cannot commit to run another tournament for the next six months. Or something along those lines. Of course, anyone can ask for help running a tournament in necessary and no one should hesitate from it - helping eachother has always been normal in tipping. But yes, managers should - if possible - tell in advance that they won't be able to run an event or find an assistant.

Can I ask a couple of question? Why does the calender looks different from 2011? Or is it just me? And why are some tournaments missing? Like Pattaya City. And if I commit to the tournaments can I withdraw last minute from it if I'm busy?

Can I ask a couple of question?

Yes;)

Why does the calender looks different from 2011?

Because WTA makes it a little different every year, so our tipping calendar is different too. We always play the biggest event of the week, so if two tournaments are played on the same week, the one of the higher category will be played. If they are of equal category, the moderator chooses which one will be played that week.

Or is it just me?

No, you are fine:)

And why are some tournaments missing?

See above.

Like Pattaya City.

Yup, it's explained there...:D

And if I commit to the tournaments can I withdraw last minute from it if I'm busy?

Yes, but it would be nice if you could notify us at least a few days before the event so that we can find another manager for that tournament.

No problem. It's always wise to choose tournaments to which you can more easily commit because of the time zones, especially if you are new to managing events, but of course it's not a rule.

Yes, during that week it's one of those two events. Whoever signs up first to run an event that week, gets to choose which event we'll play. If you are not sure which to choose you can wait until the player lists are out for example, but if you are, you can choose right now. Anyway, I'll sign you up for that week and you just confirm a few weeks before the event which event it's going to be.

I have a question. Who does the work for counting the tips/spreadsheet or is it me?

Well, it would be ideal if the tournament manager would do it, but sometimes they can't update the rankings on time or something happens that they lose track of points, so other people jump in to help. So if you are (one day) running a tournament and need help, don't hesitate to ask your players for some help:)

You can figure out your own way of course, but I believe most people use some simple table drawn on a piece of paper or a spreadsheet made in a program like Excel.

Sure:) Of course, any manager can withdraw from an obligation to run the event if he/she changes his/her mind for whatever reason. Just make sure it's at least a week before the event so that we can find your replacement.
Miami would certainly be much more difficult to run than either KL or Dubai, cause it's one of the largest draws in the whole season (only slams are bigger).

It's better than alright; it's great;) Two small mistakes though:

"This is the 185th Tipping tournament and 6th 7th in 2012."

I'm pretty sure it's the 183rd tipping tournament.

I'm not certain that the numbers are right, but starting with 2011 we always counted by "tipping events" so that Fed cup is included as well. Maybe some mix-up happened because someone forgot to count FC weekends. If there's anyone with a few extra hours, feel free to count tipping events starting with January 1st 2011:)

No, there was some mention of it and ideas were proposed to start it, but we began playing FC last year for the first time. There was also a failaed attempt at a doubles tipping tour, I think back in 2009, but that one went on for only a few tournaments as I recall and then suddenly stopped (so don't know if you want to count those as well).

Also keep in mind that they are in two very different time zones, so if you think this might cause you some problems it's worth remembering. But it's all up to you. Some people check entry lists and choose a tournament that has more of their favorite players etc.

Dear fellow players,

counting Rome, so far in 2012 we have played a total of 20 events, which were managed by 10 different managers. Great to see, but...

- I have managed 6 (sure, some were doubles and FC, but still)
- Frederik has managed 3 and is doing all the singles and doubles rankings etc.
...
- hessie, Shadowcat and SamR03A have managed 2 each
- WTAtennis2012, Ralph214, Sasja, HateBlackouts02 and JJohnyTheSaviOur have managed 1 each

Now, since we still have 30 events left to play this year, let me just say that there is no way in hell that I'll be managing another 8-9 events this season because no one feels like doing it. I have jumped in unexpectedly a few times to fill this spot and Fred has a ton of work to do with the game. So we definately need more managers, unless those of you who have managed already this year, don't mind managing another three or four events each.

Spread the word folks, spread the word.

That's more like it guys and gals! But don't get me wrong, I'm not saying you have to do something, especially if you don't have time, but maybe if you have friends on the forum who play tipping, that you could tell them about managing. That would be useful as well.

As I'm not playing a full season this year I'm not following all the events so I didn't know this was the case. Well, he signed up for some other tourmanets this year as well (3 more before Istanbul), so I suggest we put him "on probation" and if he fails to work properly on those, we can take him off from the future events. I think his next one is Baku, so I'll definately keep an eye how he does it. I'm generally against penalties for managers, because we need them as many as possible due to the number of events in a year, but I agree that we need some order in the matters.

Is it not true that I had to do all the work in the tournaments where you signed up as a manager?

ma re gave you a final chance. Use that final chance and everyone's going to be happy ;)

So, HBO02, I'll leave you signed up for Baku for another week in case you change your mind and if by then you still stand by your decision we'll find a replacement.

Since HateBlackOuts02 still seems to be stading by his decision not to manage any more tournaments, first of his remaining reservations, Baku, is now free for taking if anyone is interested.

An interesting bit of info - of the last 5 singles and 3 doubles events (including Montreal), each was managed by one of just 3 managers, and one of those will run doubles next week as well:eek:

I'm doing New Haven and that will be my first time managing. If I manage that tournament well and I have time someother week I'll try to help out :)

EDIT: I think I would be able to do Moscow, but not sure. Can I sign up under some kind of probation? I will withdraw my managing within a large amount of time if I end up not being able to manage :p Would be particularily nice because I won my only tipping title in Moscow last year :)

If you could do Cincinnati that would be awesome cause I really can't do it, longtin23 is doing doubles there and Fred is busy lately so I'm not sure if he can do it either (he's managing Toronto singles this week).

Of course you can sign-up in advance and change your mind later, no problem about that. Should I then sign you up for Moscow?

What are the requirements to manage a tournament?

What are the requirements to manage a tournament?

Well, to have some spare time during the week, to be able to count (or use a calculator), keep track of how each player played on each day, post updated scores after each day and that's pretty much it. And of course, to clearly understand the game's rules.

If you're interested, just say so;)

Ok. Thanks. I might pass to manage one right now, since I'm currently in school, but could do a tournament associated in my time zone to make it easier...Will think about it!

Sure! Oh, I forgot to say that when it comes to International series tournaments, you as a manager get to choose which one we'll play that week, cause in tipping we always play only one tournament per week. And since you are (I'm guessing) from the US, you might want to consider Quebec (starting September 10th), as it's the only one left after the US Open that's not half way around the world. Of course, there are no rules against running any event that you choose (I ran Australian Open for example, and I'm in Europe), so it's totally your call.

Anyway, on page 1 you can see which tournaments are reserved and which are still free to take, so when you find some time and if you're still interested, just let us know;)

Is there a way to do a mock tournament??For practice?

A little early, but better to be safe than sorry, especially first time around;)

I'm afraid not. But it's not a big deal really, there's always someone to help out, Frederik and I can give you a hand with the scoring and it's normal to see other players posting order of play for you if you don't have time. No one expects perfection in your very first tournament:)

I've checked and I'll able to do Moscow if nothing else shows up :)

I can't do USO, Next 2 weeks are busy. I can try to help out the manager a bit. Also I've just started managing and I don't think it would be a good idea if I ran a Grand Slam as my 2nd tourney

No problem, we'll find some way around this:) Btw, if you think managing a slam in your 2nd attempt is tricky, try to imagine running it as your first - I've done it that way; what a disaster that one was...

So folks...there's a serious risk that we don't play doubles in NY, cause it's really impossible for the same manager to run both, especially in a major.

Great to see you offer to help! In that case, I'll run the singles and you can run the doubles. I understand that you've never managed a tournament before so of course, if you have any questions or help, you can just send me a private message. Players usually help the manager by posting the Order of play, and I'm sure people would be understanding if you don't do everything perfectly and promptly. If you are still interested, try browsing previous tipping doubles threads, just to see if there's anything that you don't understand. It would be great if you could open the thread today or tomorrow, so that poeple have enough time to sign-in and form teams.

I'll send you a PM with some more specific advice now;)

OK, if you're interested, but keep in mind that managing a tournament makes you responsible for that event, so you'll be expected to run it on your own as much as possible (that includes posting the rankings, keeping track of late picks etc.). Because on previous occasions you didn't do so good, Fred and I will be monitoring your work and intervening if necessary.
