The Surviving Members of TLC Remember Lisa ‘Left Eye’ Lopes

Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins, left, and Rozanda "Chilli" Thomas are the surviving members of the trio TLC. Their bandmember Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes was killed in a car accident in Honduras. (ABCNEWS.com)

When the hip-hop and R&B supergroup TLC went on stage this summer at the MTV Video Music Awards, they got a standing ovation.

But only two members of the trio were there — Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins and Rozanda "Chilli" Thomas. They were there to pay a tearful tribute to their bandmate Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, who was killed in a car crash in Honduras in April, at the age of 30.
"It's the first time ever that I got a standing ovation and applause not for something I accomplished good in my life, but because it's my group member who passed away," remembers Watkins.

In their first interview since Lopes' death, Watkins and Thomas told Primetime's John Quinones that they will never replace Lopes. "Oh God, no," said Thomas. "We have diehard fans out there and I'm sure they would be very upset if we tried to replace Lisa."

Bringing Girl Power to Hip-Hop

The three were teenagers when they formed TLC in Atlanta in 1992. Lopes came from an impoverished and troubled home in Philadelphia, with little more than a talent for dancing and rapping. In Atlanta, she met Watkins and Thomas, who were also poor, and fatherless.

They were determined to make it big. "I always said that in the beginning. I was like — buck that, man — we're going to be the biggest girl group.... Ain't nobody like TLC," said Thomas.

In less than 10 years on the music scene, the trio would go on to sell more than 27 million records, making TLC the biggest-selling girl group of all time. They won five Grammys, five Soul Train awards and five MTV awards.

TLC's brand of self-confident, independent girl power made them pioneers of hip-hop for young women — and their music crossed over from the inner city streets they had come from to the suburbs.

Their music had a special resonance for girls, according to Emil Wilberkin, editor in chief at Vibe magazine. "They're fun, and they're sassy," he said. "They're kind of like the most popular girls, like you'd want to hang out with them or you'd want to date them."

Letting Men Have It

Their lyrics also had a raunchy streak that raised some eyebrows. On one song, "Girl Talk," they warned men that they had better perform well in the bedroom because otherwise their girlfriends would start "spreadin' the word" about "about the way a brother is hangin'."

On "No Scrubs," from 1999's FanMail, they took aim at men with bad pick-up lines and no money who live at home with their mothers. The trio used to make fun of men because they're "always bragging, just lying," according to Thomas.

"The reason why we got so much flak is because people thought we were underage, and we were adults," she continued, noting that male hip hop stars used similar language "all the time" without being criticized.

Left Eye Was the ‘Crazy’ One

The group's third album was called CrazySexyCool. Thomas was the sexy one and Watkins was cool, but the crazy one was definitely Lopes. The rapper of the group, she stood out from the beginning, with the trademark that gave her her nickname: a condom worn over her left eye to promote safe sex.

She also had the most tumultuous personal life, drinking heavily and sometimes disappearing for weeks at a time. In a drunken jealous rage in 1994, she burned down the $1.3 million mansion she shared with her boyfriend, Atlanta Falcons receiver Andre Rison.

Lopes also started fighting with her fellow band members, once sending a letter to an industry magazine boasting that she was the real talent of the trio. She called them "haters" and "manipulators" and refused to go to Thomas' wedding. "That was the maddest Lisa had ever been at us before," Watkins said.

Fans and critics did not think the group would survive the fighting, but they came together again when they realized they had signed a terrible deal. They were making millions for their record label, yet the three women say they only saw a small fraction of that. "The money that TLC has generated for our record company ... Please. Please," said Thomas. "Sorry. You know, we should have a lot more to show for it."

When they threatened to take their label and manager to court, their lawyers were hesitant, but the three women insisted. "We were like, ah, ah, ah... we're going to do this. Because we knew. We knew. We weren't gonna back down," said Thomas. "We had nothing to lose," Watkins added. "What were we going to lose? We were already broke."

They ended up getting a new contract and a lot more money.

Bringing Attention to Sickle Cell

But then a few months later, in 1996, there was another drama. After the group had spent 40 weeks at the top of the charts, Watkins collapsed on stage. To quash rumors that she had AIDS, Watkins announced that she was in fact battling sickle cell anemia, a debilitating and often fatal genetic blood disease — and something she had not even admitted to her bandmates.

She says the disease still causes her pain, but that she does not want people to feel sorry for her. "I want them to learn about the disease, be educated.... I want to be the person living to talk about it."

A Fatal Accident in Honduras

By the beginning of 2002, TLC were putting their problems behind them, growing up and learning from their mistakes. Lopes was getting her life together, trying to stay clean and spending time at a spiritual retreat in Honduras.

But then, on April 25, Lopes was at the wheel of her rented SUV when it rolled off a highway and struck two trees. Her seven passengers escaped without serious injury, but Lopes, who was not wearing a seat belt, was killed instantly.

More than 18,000 fans showed up for her funeral in Atlanta. She was buried in a white coffin with a gold inscription from her most famous rap poem, "Waterfalls."

Tribute to a Bandmember

Just before she died, Lopes recorded several songs for an upcoming album, TLC's fourth, titled 3-D. Thomas and Watkins are going ahead with the release, as a tribute to Lopes. They are trying to get on with their lives, though. Thomas is dating teen heartthrob Usher, and blushes when his name comes up. "It's serious," she said. "I prayed for a certain type of man. When I tell you he fits the description, he does..... I've been waiting on this — all my life."

One song on the album, "Turntable," is dedicated to Lopes. The lyrics run: "I used to walk around like nothing could happen to me. Life is a gamble so I should live life more carefully."

They say she would have loved the song. "This would have been one of her favorite songs," said Chilli.

"Her time was so short," Watkins added. "I wish we could have just been three little old TLC ladies together, you know, just be three old little ladies, still kicking it."

Review of the album (UKMix.com)

You've had your ups and downs
It happened for a reason
Cause after April showers
There will come a change of season" - Turntable

This album was always going to be one of the biggest of the year. However, while it was originally indented to be released under happier circumstances, the tragic events of April 2002, when bandmember Lisa Lopes was killed in a car accident, meant that this was not possible for "3D". But, following the terrible 'showers' of April, a change of season has, indeed, come for TLC.

Since their debut, "Ooooooohhh... On The TLC Tip", released in 1992, TLC have been one of the biggest names in hip-hop / R&B. They're among the biggest-selling music groups ever, with their second album, "CrazySexyCool", being certified 11 times platinum. The follow-up, "Fan Mail", went six times platinum. Forget the likes of the Spice Girls; if ever there was a super-group, TLC is surely it.

This latest offering is very much what you'd expect from TLC. Musically, it's probably best described as being somewhere between the two previous projects. No expense has been spared on lining up some of the world's hottest producers. Dallas Austin worked on the title track, "3D", "Damaged" and "Quickie", while Darkchild's talent has been put to good work on "Turntable" and "Hey Hey Hey Hey". The Neptunes take over on the infectious, "In Your Arms Tonight", while Missy Elliot performs and produces on the upbeat "Dirty Dirty" and Babyface teams up with Daryl Simmons to work on the stunning "Hands Up".

Fans may, however, be a little disappointed to discover that Lisa appears on this disc, according to my calculations, for little over two minutes in total. The loss of Lisa definitely shows through at times, and the high points are most certainly when all three members come together with amazing results. One such example is the brilliant and original "Quickie", a track very unlike anything recorded before. Another fantastic track featuring Lisa is "Over Me", in which she makes references to the time she burnt down her boyfriend's mansion in 1994.

What's most striking when you listen to this album, though, is the sheer number of potential singles. A personal favourite is the almost slow motion "Hands Up". Also potential candidates are "Turntable", a song with obvious links to Lisa's tragic death, "Dirty Dirty", featuring Missy Elliot, the strangely addictive "Hey Hey Hey Hey" and, of course, the highlight of the album, "Quickie". Finally, there's "Girls Talk", the debut single from "3D". Despite being a good track and definite single material from the album, there are most certainly better choices here for a comeback single.

"3D" is a fantastic comeback album from one of the brightest and impressive groups in the music business today. Though not perfect, this CD, expected to be TLC's last totally original album, will nevertheless ensure that they go out with a bang. Enjoy! *****

E! Online Review:

Artist / Band: TLC
Record Label: Arista Records
Release Date: November 12, 2002

Our Review:
This is one 3D event that's all too real. It couldn't have been easy for Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins and Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas to finish their fourth album after Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes' death, but to pull it off with such composure is the real feat. 3D features several career-defining turns by superstar producers such as the Neptunes ("In My Arms Tonight"), Babyface ("Hands Up"), Missy Elliott and Timbaland ("Dirty"), with all the group's playfulness and silky-smooth funk intact. And through it all, the girls treat the untimely departure of their associate with just the right balance of eloquence and heartbreak. It just goes to show that TLC didn't become one of the biggest selling girl groups of all time for nothing.

An article in UK Mag:

When I fly to Atlanta to interview TLC band members Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas and Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins, my first thoughts are of Lisa “Lefteye” Lopes, the bands third and most flamboyant member. Lisa was killed in Honduras this April in a road Accident, When the jeep she woz driving careered off the road. She woz just 30. Before Lisa’s death, the trio TLC had sold more than 21million albums worldwide and had 4 number 1 hits. They were- and still are- the worlds most successful girl band, and are abut to release their forth album, 3D, most of which was recorded before Lisa’s death. My original interview with 32 yr old T-Boz is postponed when the singer falls sick as a result of her ongoing battle with the hereditary disease sickle –cell anemia. There’s also hints that, when I do meet Chilli 31 and T-Boz, I should avoid questions about Lisa – not suprisingly considering the emotional speeches the pair made at the VMA Awards on the 29th of August. Both singers broke down as the announced a $25,000 AIDs educational scolarship to honur ‘Lefteye’, the band mate they regarded as a sister. Its difficult to imagine how ill find T-Boz and Chilli who since joining TLC, have been through more highs, lows abd tragedy than most of us will have in a liftime. But hen we do meet, the pai turn out to be more like down-to- earth girls than the superstar divas and mothers of toddlers they are. Yes, they’re still grieving, but they both fell positive and determined about the future. And they’re both happy to tlak about Lisa….

The gurls on why the decided to release 3D after Lisa’s death

T-Boz: “it’s the only thing we can do. She woz taken from us in a way we never thought would happen, so it’s the only thang we can do. I have mixed feelings – part of me is happy and the other part is sad.”

Chilli: “This is my Favorite TLC record. It’s classic TLC, just T-Boz Lefteye and Chilli all coming together. I luv all the tracks but Turntables is my favorite. Its very inspiring and uplifting, and it really reminds me of Lisa and helps me to deal with what happened, because after some bad thangs theres always somethang good, and that’s what its about.”

On being the original ambassadors of Girl Power

TLc formed in Atlanta in 1990. Two years later, having signed to LaFace Records, the girls burst onto the music seen with their debut album Oooooo… On The TLC Tip. Long beofre anyone heard of The Spice Girls TLc pioneered the ‘Girl Power’ message by refusing to conform and promoting safe sex to their fans by pinning condoms to their clothes.

Chilli: “that girl power message is important to us but its never what you say, but how you say it. That’s why I think guys like TLC, too. Women get judged no matter what we do but you don’t have to wear tight clothes to make it in a group. When Britney Started she looked like the girl next door, but with every record it’s a little less, till theres nothing left. I mean, where do you go from there? Do you start over by putting your clothes back on?”
On Destiny’s Child

TLC have inspired Girl bands from Destiny’s Child to Mis-Teeq, so it’s inevitable that comparisons are made. But its also a little know fact that, in the early days, Destiny’s Child were TLC’s support act on tour. The fact that Destiny’s Child doesn’t credit TLC with any part of the worldwide success they now enjoy is somethang that niggles the girls slightly.

Chilli: “I don’t get the comparision between us and Destiny’s Child because in their group it’s all about one person – Beyonce. With TLC its T-Boz, Lefteye and Chilli. We’re solo artists in a group together. And we’re kinda like tomboys and they’re glamour girls.”

T-Boz: “People compare us because they’re a girl group and they like to make it competitive amoung women in the industry.”

Chilli “ TLC have always looked at it like there’s enough room for everybody. You know, we never had a problem but it’s funny with girl groups. Instead of giving us respect and saying ‘TLC opened the door for us because they were the first group with girl power’, we don’t get any reconition. I don’t understand that. I never. I never, ever had a problem talking about The Supremes or The Pointersisters, or even Salt ‘N’ pepa for that matter. We’re not like them but they paved the way for us, so why cant they [Destiny’s Child] say TLC paved the way for them? Because we did. To Me Bills Bills Bills is just a copy of No Scrubs; same producer, same writer, you know? But I love other groups. When Destiny’s Child first came out we had them on tour with us. I loved them then. That’s why I get upset, and its funny because we always hear they’re trying to beat our number of sales. Destiny’s Child has sold 10million working their butts off and we’ve sold nine million doing nothing. You don’t have to work hard in this group and although I admire their hard work, im glad I’m in TLC!”

On love and life

While Lisa’s life was constantly making headlines, TLC’s other two members seemed more protective of their private lives. T-Boz married rapper Mack 10 in August 2000 and the couple have a 2 year old daughter, Chase. After years of love life cloaked in secrecy, Chilli’s relationship with Usher has put her in the spotlight, not least because Usher is Seven years her junior. The pair got together last year when Chilli starred as the love intrest in the video for his hit U Remind Me (“she’s someone who’s very special and I want her to be aprt of my life,” he says). Prior to that, Chilli had a stormy relationship with producer Dallas Austin, father of her son Tron, Five.

Chilli: “for 10 of the 11 years I’ve been in TLC, I was never able to talk about my personal relationship because it was bad. Now, I have the total opposite. Usher never been in a high profile relationship and everywhere we go its crazy! We’ve been escorted out of malls and stuff because of the fans, but its OK because he is so wonderful. He just is. And my son loves him, which was the most important thang to me. “ I know he’s the one for me, because ive never dated a guy even a year younger than me. Before, id be like “ugh, no! It’s seven whole years, man!’ And for a long time he really pursued me. When U Remind Me came out, everyone thought we were dating but we just had chemistry. In between takes he was saying, ‘let me take you out.’ ‘ No no, no. I’ve got ready –made family over here and ur to young.’and then they’d say, OK, action!’ And then we’d get to it! It was so funny. After a month I gave in. I couldn’t resist!”

On what’s kept them going through the tough times

In 1995, the year after Lisa woz arrested for starting the fire destroyed the home of ex- lover Aandre Rison, the group was forced to file for bankrupcy – despite selling 10million copies of their second album CrazySexyCool- When manager pepples Reid claimed they owed her $3.5 million. But the belief that together they could overcome anything kept them going.

T-Boz : “you know, the sister hood in TLC is funny. When people talk about us, or said we were going bankrupt , they pulled us closer together , it made us stronger. People wanted to say we broke up, but we never did. You really have to love someone to stick along for this long. If you really love somebody that much, its like a marriage – you cant just break up. That’s whats so great about TLC, we really have a love and a bond that nobdy can break in this industry , the most important thang is to remain who you are and I owe that to my momma! When im at my mom’s house, she’s like, “I don’t care whose tour you were on, come over here and help me cook!”

Chilli: “it’s our dynamic. It’s love of the music, the singing, the dancing- its what I woz born to do, apart from be Tron’s mommy.”

On when it hits home Lisa’s Gone

Despite the earlier worries of the record company, both Chilli and T-Boz speak to me about Lisa without becoming too upset, but in a recent US magazine Usher reveled, “Even now, when she [Chilli] sees pictures of Lisa, she breaks down.” But today the girls are putting on a brave face.

T-Boz: “you are forced to remember [Lisa’s gone] every time you work, and you learn to deal with it. But at the same time, we feel we’ve done a good job and Lisa would have been proud. You know, if she waz here she’d be like,’ go out there and sing my songs.’ Its something that I want to do and just I have to cope and deal with it. But im getting better.”

Chilli: “Lisa is irreplaceable. If that wasn’t the case we would have been able to replace her after the burning of the house”

T-Boz: “this whole album is dedicated to Lisa – we’re the only people who can keep her spirit alive. I have mixed feelings [about being back in the public eye]. It’s gonna be different, it’s never gonna be the same again, Lisa’s not here. Evertime the two of us sit together there’s nobody in the middle.”

TLC pays tribute to the memory of Lisa Lopes in the Video for their new single Girl Talk, which is out December 2nd. Their album 3D is out now.

Well, yeah I do... don't you just wish you owned that car in real life... :P

Ooo, 3D debutted at number 6 this week in the US, quite good considering the promotion this album had. I'm a little disappointed, but 6 place is fine... : )

CSC didn't even reach number 1 and it is still the greatest selling Hip Hop album in history! : )

Big Fat Pink Elephant
Nov 22nd, 2002, 05:52 PM

I saw the videoclip for Girltalk today, it was great.

The album has really grown on me and I think if we give it time, it will sell well.

Unfortunatly 3D dropped to #24, but I think it will climb back up when the singles are released, especcially turntable and damaged.;)

Williams Rulez
Nov 30th, 2002, 04:49 AM
Well if I'm not wrong... CSC dropped to 55 in its 2nd week, so maybe it is a good sign.

Afterall, I think this album is fantastic, probably my second favourite TLC album. Maybe it'll sell just as well. There are so many potential singles in this album, I just hope they make the right choices... :D

Big Fat Pink Elephant
Nov 30th, 2002, 12:38 PM
well, i think 3D will be like CSC - still selling after ALL these years!!! so in year 2007, 3D will still be hot

Nov 30th, 2002, 02:22 PM
