FI Dechu Appiah d. Mrs. Singh

Teenager Dechu upsets 4 time winner Mrs. Singh. In the semis vs. Woodbrige Dechu survived 3 match points. On the last day Dechu played 4 finals-both seniors and juniors.

ends Jan 9 Coupe Pierre Gillou, Paris, FR (IN)
FI Flo de la Courtie d. Maud Galtier 6-2 3-6 7-5

The service box was shortened on purpose by 12 inches-an experiment designed to slow the fast serve and volleys of the male players.

Jan 3-10 New Zealand Nationals, Christchurch, NZ (GR)
FI Ruia Morrison d. Sonia Cox 6-3 6-3
DF Cox/Morrison d. Rennie/Davidson 6-2 6-3.

No foreigners entered on the ladies side. Ruia's had some bad luck here-in 1958 pleurisy struck her down before the final, in 1956 she appeared certain to win when a fire in the gallery halted play and she lost momentum. This time Sonia was cursed with a wrenched bicep as the Maori girl vcruised to victory.

Jan 3-11 Western Australian Chmps, Perth, AUS (GR)
QF Reynolds d. Barbara Hall 6-0 6-1, Sch d. Mrs. Pat Holmes 6-3 6-0
SF Reynolds d. Jill Langley 6-1 6-2, Schuurman d. Eva Duldig 3-6 6-3 7-5

DF Reynolds/Schuurman d. Duldig/Helen Paterson 6-0 7-5
MX Laver/Schuurman d. Crawford/Reynolds 6-3 7-5

Duldig had 3 match points in the semis. "Both girls, the picture of beauty in their Teddy Tinling outfits, delighted the gallery with their hard hitting from either wing, although the tricky wind accounted for 15 service breaks in the match."

Jan 3-11 Manly Seaside, Sydney, AUS (GR)
FI Thelma Long d. Mary Hawton 7-5 4-6 6-3
DF Hawton/Long d. M. Fenton/Le Mercier 6-3 6-3

FI Laura Lou Kunnen [1] d. Marie Martin (Aus) [3] 6-3 8-6
DF Kunnen/Hernandez d. Flo Blanchard/Martin 6-2 6-3

Laura Lou causes a stir among the press and male fans when she wears panties that feature an embroidered Confederate Flags-two of then, one for each cheek. For a minor event it has a very international field-Heegewalkt is Chile's #1, Hernandez hails from Mexico. Flo Blanchard had more fame as a tennis umpire than player.

Jan 3-11 Phoenix Thunderbird, Scottsdale, Ariz, US (HD) Dr=17+
QF Green d. Pat Todd 10-8 6-3
SF Green d. Sally Moore 6-3 3-6 8-6, Palmer d. Karen Hantze 3-6 7-5 6-2

Final Mary Reitano[4] d. Renee Schuurman[2] 6-2 6-3
------------------------------------------------
Junior Final
Jan Lehane[1] d. Margaret Smith 6-1 6-0
------------------------------------------------
World top tenners South Africans Reynolds and Schuurman added interest to the filed, but neither wins the title, as Reitano upsets Schuurman in the final. Mary's slice backhand and drop shot do the most damage. On the way to her win Mary beats little known Margaret Smith, competing in her first Aussie. It's the only time Smith will EVER lose in the Aussie before the quarters.

The heat was on, as temps were as high as 107 in the shade and 120 on court. This put off fans, only the finals drawing a decent crowd of 7,000.

Lehane is top seed for the Juniors and and #5 seed among women at age 17. Her coach is Vic Edwards (later coach of Evonne Goolagong) and she is considered Australia's future, crushing then unknown future great Margaret Smith (Court) in the juniors final 6-0 6-1. Her win over top seed Reynolds in the quarters is the shock of the event.

Doubles MUST COMPLETE DRAW IN SLAM SECTION!!!

Moore saved 2 mps vs. Fay Muller in the 1R. After a "frightful exhibition of fluffed volleys" Hard rights herself at 1-6 2-4-only 5 points from losing. She swept 4 games, went down 0-3 in the 3rd, then steadied again. Buding had used "softball tactics" to upset Fleitz, but against Bueno's "manly" serves and volleys it proved futile.

In the semis Darlene, "the ebullient pre-med student", downed "big eyed" Reynolds by containing Sandra's powerful forehand. Throughout the fortnight the South African ran around her forehand, pounding them for winners. Hard kept in deep tot he backhand and then threw in short angles to the forehnad to forge to victory.

Before the final Darlene had a 6-0 lifetime record vs. Maria. It counted for nothing as the woman "who hits off her toes like a ballerina" easily grabbed her first major. On match point she threw her racquet skyward and burst into tears. It was the first time since 1938 that an American woman didn't hold the Wimbledon trophy. Bueno hit 3 aces and about a dozen unreturnable serves. Afterwards Hard said she pulled a leg muscle in the second set which affected her game, but she did give Maria her due. "That service. It's as good as Louise Brough's or Althea Gibson's."

The courts were so rain soaked that early rounds were held on cement. Moore, weakened by an intestinal flue, saves a match point vs. Lewis in the quarters. 3,000 came to the finals, and the women were more entertaining than the men. The South Africans "slugged away in one long rally after another, one deuce game" after the next. Few points were decided at net, though Reynolds won with a blazing backhand passing shot. Sandra returned later to win both the dubs and the mixed for a triple crown in one afternoon.
