A nice idea for a thread, rather than one celebrating the fact she's going :fiery:

I'll really miss Arantxa; she was the player who really got me into tennis 13 years ago winning the French, and I've been a loyal fan ever since. Wow, I guess even my interest in all things Spanish started with Arantxa, so she's responsible for a lot! Good luck to her...I wonder what she'll do? Anyone else think coach of Kuznetsova is a possibilty?

ArantxaSanchezVicarioRockz!

I've followed Arantxa since I was 8. Its so sad to see her go, but its been wonderful following her. I'm proud of her and all she's achieved. I count myself lucky to have had so many great memories. Arantxa, you rock and I hope you have a happy life, you deserve it.

I cant beleive this:fiery:   I mean, is she not gonna play doubles at least? I mean she gave the number two player in the world a hard time not to long ago, PULESSE RECONSIDER ARANXTA:sad: :fiery:

Nothings been announced yet; its all speculation on the part of the Spanish press. As Gallofa said, theres no need getting upset until we know the decision. And even if the worst comes to the worst, I'm just gonna focus on all the good memories...I dont ever wanna see her go through a traumatic match like last weekend again!

DEETHELICK
Nov 9th, 2002, 07:29 PM
I followed Arantxa when I saw her in the 1995 Wimby final!

She played so well, and was so feisty I was impressed!!!! I think she has achieved shitloads! I mean Fed Cup, Olympics, Doubles, Singles, No.1 in singles and doubles and Grand Slam singles titles!!

It shows that hard work and determination does pay off and she was talented and I hope she gets the appreciation she deserves!!

Vamos Arantxa, good luck in the future!!! :)

I have been a fan of Arantxa since 1989 and for the last three years now I have had the pleasure of travelling to tournies and watching Arantxa play live, with fellow Arantxa fans.

Over the years she has achieved so much and will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the greatest fighters in the game. As DEETHELICK said, throughout her career she has been an example of what can be achieved through hard work and determination.

And, of course, on a personal note, without having been a fan of Arantxa's I would never have got to know all the wonderful fellow Arantxa fans who I have since met and travelled to tournies and shared some of the best holidays of my life with. For that I will always be grateful to her! :D

I'm sad that she is retiring and will miss her, but I wish her good luck with whatever she decides to do with the rest of her life. :D

Some of my times at Wimbledon with fellow Arantxa fans have been the best days ever. I've met the best people, had the most laughs and seen the legend Arantxa herself (as well as doing a bit of Pam spotting ;) ). Awesome :)

Even if I did post first the article saying she was going to retire, I still cannot believe it... This does not look like Arantxa's style! Could some spanish people tell us whether "El Mundo Deportivo" is usually a reliable source or not??

Atxik, this is only speculation I would say, with a VERY good base, but still speculation. Arantxa will make her announcement on Tuesday, let's wait until then.

Caz and Sin, I know what you mean, and I agree that our tennis holidays are from another dimension! :D - how we manage to have such great times is amazing and we owe that to being fans of Arantxa, so thanks Arantxa for that.

... of course if it wasn't for that pesky, extremelly weird Pam fan, our tennis holidays would be even better.... but... we keep seeing PAM PEOPLE thanks to her ;)

JonBcn
Nov 9th, 2002, 11:26 PM
<pouting> I want to go on an arantxa holiday too!

Perhaps we can open a theme park? Somewhere for Pam to graze the giraffes.

So many great memories!!!

You didn't miss out by much this year, JonBcn (or so Sian told me! :p) - hehehe almost met you! :D

Sin and Bea - Thanx for the reminder of all those great memories!! How about offering Richard Williams a chip, or cheering for both Arantxa and Magi after a doubles match in which they had played on opposing teams, or Magi's win over Pierce, or Vivi's win over Hingis, or Rita Grande's glare, or Mary Pierce's look of desperation, or, or, or.........

ps. Bea if you're going to the Spanish National Championships, let me know, 'cos I'm *so* coming with you!!!

Bea; well, the connections are one thing, its just if my job release me so I can go...I'm thinking of calling sick on Tuesday just to go to the press conference! It would help if I knew what its gonna be like - if she's gonna do interviews and answer questions it'll be great...but she might just read a statement and leave!

  OMG!!! I just came home from a competition's trip in Georgia and I still am in shock from what I've heard that Arantxa will be retiring...one thing that I always said in the past was that I stand by every decision Arantxa makes..she was my fave player the first time I watched tennis (in 1996) and since then no one has come close in replacing her..One of my favorite moments was her 89 French Win, 98 French and Fed Cup win, her win over Hingis last year (;) lolz), but also my most favorite matches was the 89 French final, 94 French Final, 95 Wimbledon final, and 96 French Open final ALL vs. Graf, and I always loved watching them play against each other..also her matches against Monica, they always brought the best out of each other, also she has played great matches against Venus and Serena, not to mention beating Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova early in her career, she has accomplished so much. Winning 100 career titles, and reaching the finals of every grand slam at least twice, altough she won't be fully remembered for her results, on paper it speaks other wise and you can't ever take those away from her. From what she shows on court she's been a true role model for me and a lot of other people in the world by showing that you don't need the talent, height, and big weapons to win..but that you need heart, spirit, and a great work ethic to win!

But not only the court has she done great stuff (especially for her country) but off the court as well..she has done charities and is great friends with a lot of the other players on the tour..she's always true to her fans, and there have been many plenty encounters up close that her fans have well experienced..but anyway I guess I have to end that I will miss Arantxa terribly! I once said that I'd quit watching tennis all together the day she retires, so I won't be posting and following results up closely like I used to, but I always be here to talk to other Arantxa fans ;)..but anyway I'm sure the tour will lose one of the great tennis legends..I wish Arantxa the best in her future and decisions..she was, is, and always will be..Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario: The Barcelona Bumblebee..VAMOSSSSSSS!!!

I will be posting pics here too as well. :)

Arantxa is one of the few players still around from when I started to follow tennis. The sight of her Mom in the stands looking on anxiously, often with a doggy, is one of my lasting impressions of my years as a tennis fan. It's hard for me to imagince a year of Slams without spunky little Arantxa.

I wish the best for you in your retirement, Arantxa. Please become a coach! You have already helped so many young players so much, just out of the good of your big heart.

And soon you will be inducted into the Tennis Hall of Fame! And we will get the chance to admire you again. Thanks for the great memories! :) :hearts:

Goodbye Arantxa

When I first started watching tennis she was one of my faves. I wish her well in retirement.

Loved the fact that she was a fighter when she played, battled for every point and never gave up.

I truly wish her all the best in her new endeavours. She was never one of my favorites, but she was part of the elite players when I started to follow tennis (1990). You can't take away the talent and especially the heart this girl has. There will never be another one quite like her. She's a great champion and I have lots of respect for her.

I'll be posting a new thread on this is just a minute, but I thought I'd add this here as well....

Since Arantxa is not a "computer person" the messages in this thread (and others of course) will be compiled and sent to her - so if you want to make additions/corrections/deletions or if you don't want your message going directly to Arantxa at all, please indicate that in this thread.

Do you realize that sign is sitting on my bedroom wall and that I am staring at the sign even as I type this??!! :)

This is the first time I have ever seen this picture -- and what a day to be seeing it, huh? Just to remind me of yet one more wonderful memory would never exist without Arantxa.....

JASON -- look *really* closely at this picture -- is that not your little [half a] face next to the woman with the straw hat.. (who was she, btw?) I know the woman in the black dress is Sandy Kavanaugh, the media director....
