Bring out Premier 5-GOAT again please, Maria. Or just bullshit your way to the title like in Cincinnati, couldn't care less how you do it. Just would really like one more title before the end of the season.

Plus she can tank in the 2nd round in Dulljing for all I care, Tokyo is at least semi-respectable.

I have a feeling she'll win Tokyo, then go out in Beijing embarrassingly early to someone like Petrova or Peer  I'd be ok with that honestly; I really don't care about the #1 spot. I think the main goal for her the rest of the season should be a strong run at the YEC to set her up for the Australian Open.

Azarenka could be trouble at the YEC but if Maria feels like it she can crush those girls one by one. I mean, that top 8 is just :help: the field is gonna be weak as hell...

This. She's one of the most unpredictable tennis player right now. She could win this tournament without losing a set or she could lose early against Cetkovska playing horrible tennis, making tons of DF and unforced errors.
We all don't know what to expect from her.

I think she didn't make some significant improvements in her game between USO and Tokyo. I don't think so, that now, after pathetic USO and break from tournaments she's going to play great tennis. But It's only my opinion and hope I'm wrong ;)

Draw is pretty tricky. If she get through Cetkovska which won't be easy task she'll have Goerges,Pavluychenkova/Kvitova, Stosur/Zvonareva. Very difficult IMO. Only positive thing: she hasn't Azarenka around her ;)

Ok Cetkovska may have beaten some top players in New Haven, but that's New Heaven and it was a while ago. From my memory Cetkovska didn't have great USO either. Maria's game has no problems, she just didn't play it right when playing Pennetta and Pennetta's experience really held up and play strategic tennis at important moment. What she has to do with her game is gain more control and snap the opportunity when it comes. Sometimes she seems to forget that her opponents can also make mistakes and errors when she's trying to kill the shot with a winner that doesn't exist in the world.

Maria will definitely prefer to play top 10 players at this stage because she knows their games very well:

1. Wozniacki - she keeps grinding and retrieving, everyone knows it but you also know her major weakness is her forehand side and pathetic slice. She also isn't good at taking the short balls. If you can put her out of her comfort zone she is pretty clueless.

2. Azarenka - you can't give her too much pace as she loves it. Her serve is her major weakness and it's good if you can crack her serve down.

3. Zvonareva - a weaker version of Maria and seems not able to find the way the win against Maria even though she can play good tennis

4. Stosur - she just got owned in every department. Maria's height kills the majority of her weapons.

i dont think Zvonareva ís game is a weeker version of Mariaís game.

Zvonareva's game is good but lacks aggression. But when she executes well, she hardly misses anything. However, she is too easy to be dominated and her rhythm will just be gone when being pressured. Maria's game somehow requires a lot of energy because it's very aggressive from the beginning. She can be aggressively accurate in her shot making or aggressively pathetic in producing errors. The Cincy SF was a good example.

1. Wozniacki in theory should be a comfortable matchup for Maria, but with that diminished serve and more erratic game it becomes more difficult...honestly I liked how Maria played her in Rome - that was the first time when she employed some tactics and was hitting to that useless forehand wing and behind the pusher constantly. Honestly all Maria has to do is to play smart and come to the net as often as possible (easier said than dome with Pova, I know:lol:)

2. Azarenka is just matchup from hell for Maria and it all comes down to Vika's return of serve. Unless that serve somehow returns and becomes a weapon again, Azarenka will always be a struggle for Maria.

3. Zvonareva is nice matchup for Masha - she is easily overpowered and intimidated by bigger hitters and Maria does a good job of pressuring Vera all the time.

4. What else needs to be said here - H2H and match history tell everything and Maria reads and dismantles Sam's game better than anyone else..

Couldn't agree more the big issue is really Azarenka, I swear she retrieves Maria's shots like noone else on tour this is so weird especially when you see her struggling over pathetic ball bashers:rolleyes: but I believe that she always want to give her best against Pova and tends to overplay sometimes like all those stupid teenagers.

NO, NO, NO, NO, NO.
Maria is the more complete player. Rewatch her AO'08 matches, she did everything there and was flawless in every aspect of the game. The thing with her in order for her game to click and let herself go to the net and be more varied, she needs to believe 100 % in herself and have lots of confidence. Zvonareva is a decent player with a nice game, somebody whose place is 8-10 ranked but her game is limited and not capable of blowing great players of the court even in her best form.

Physically I believe she can handle it. She's No.2 in the world and the fitness should be there. Also, she's had sorta enough rest from the early exit in New York anyways. It looks like the condition is fine for tennis. I'm expecting a great week!

Yeah Maria blew the competition off the court with her volleys. There were barely any volleys/dropshots even in AO '08. Her groundies and serve were dialed in, tuned to perfection, hot, the right stuff etc. THAT's why she won.

Zvonareva's volleys, defense and movement are way better than Maria's. I think that's a pretty common fact really.
Maria seldomly to never shows some sort of "variety", even in her peak years when she was full of confidence and without fear. Nowadays she resorts to dropshots when she's desperate her groundies won't do the trick. :sobbing:

omg and I thought you guys were harsh in the GM result thread :o she did well. Tamarine played pretty damn well in the 2nd set, infact her level in the second set was much better than the first set. Her returns were on fire, she wasn't missing many groundies and her serve was also on fire.

As for Maria, she played quite well too. Her serve was pretty good today, and I'll be extremely happy if she can maintain this level of serve throughout the tournament, or even for the rest of her career. :oh: And anyway, while her level did drop in the second set, it was still a solid performance. 22 winners and 22 UEs, 7 aces and 4 df; don't tell me you guys aren't happy with that ESPECIALLY considering her dire form throughout the US Open series and the US Open itself.

I presume it will be Goerges in R3 and she hasn't been all that impressive on HC this year

I think it'll be Greta Arn tbh. Which might be quite awkward - I'd expect Maria to eventually win it no matter what, but Arn might go in with a lot of confidence after Auckland, and make it into an ugly 3-setter

If it's Goerges, it'll probably be something like 6-3 6-1 for Maria. Goerges is utterly hopeless on courts this quick, especially against someone who hits with so much pace and depth like Maria ... I remember Goerges even got overpowered by KIRILENKO at Stanford this year :hysteric:

Local time.
I remember the last match between them in AO, amazing form from Maria in last 2 set

Improve against Petra please. Can't wait to see the match tomorrow.

the forehand was more than fine :yeah: but she did made 20+ UEs on the backhand which is very concerning

Matches between Maria and Julia are always close and messy - with such gamestyles they are both prone to wild errors and great winners at the same time. Mashenka just needs to remember that she also has BH in her next match and she'll be fine

She made a lot of points with 1st serve, too bad when she had to serve a 2nd she made like less than 20% points.. :\

If i remember correctly, it was "only" 4 in 1st set, which wasn't so bad at least. Too many in the 2nd set, and 2 times 2 df's in a row. :\

I'm fine with that. I'd rather have that off because it's more likely to be back fine next round, unlike the forehand.

Julia's W/UE ratio looks even better than Maria's...our girl willed this win on her guts alone - this bodes well for her future chances in this tourney

Very good that she was able to put her away in two sets, tie-breaks no less.
Those double faults are as always a problem. If she keeps her errors down she should make the SF's here.

All we has is Rugby Channel (though that's fucking cool, but still they show rugby on the other channels too).

Hmm I'm worried. You know shit's not right when Maria's BH is off. So many errors off that wing, but FH was fine. Serve is still messy.

I'm not expecting too much from tomorrow, I'm actually thinking Kvitova will probably rape Maria again.

Just to add insult to injury, not only can we watch Pova live in Tokyo on espn3 but we can also replay the stream later on, should we choose to do that!!! I like to watch it live for the sheer excitement of the tennis match and then watch it again concentrating mostly on Pova's movement. ESPN3 is just simply grand for those tours it shows!

It was a good match: exciting, tense, entertaining, edge of the seat... Julia played well for Julia but Pova didn't play so well as Pova. Pova played the important points a lot better than Julia did, thus winning both tiebreaks. Pova seemed to be off dexiprobopping for much of the second set, though.

I noticed that too, and I'm glad she looked pissed at the end. Not here for Boredpova. A lot of what's been lacking this year is drive and passion, so any signs of her caring about her game and matches is always welcome.

She will be determined. She has survived not playing well one day, and figures out how to play better the next day very often. It is when she plays well, and something is missing the next day that spells trouble.
