Loaded up the lad and headed out into the face-melting heat today to watch some tennis in lovely Grapevine, Texas today.

We got and wandered around for a little bit and practically ran into Sabine Lisicki as she left a practice court. She is ADORABLE. She looks much more petite and girly in person and she smiled and gave a little wave to everyone as she was hustled off to the lockerroom by a phalanx of escorts. I don't think it registered on anyone to ask her for a pic or autograph. I of course forgot my phone camera and the youth was useless with his.

Saw about two second of Rezai/Bondarenko, so I couldn't say much except that Rezai appeared to bashing the everloving crap out of the ball.

When that match ended we went to another practice court and saw my beloved Wickmayer. She's a big gal. Well-proportioned, but big. When Halep and Johanna Larsson came out to warm up for that match they looked like a couple of high school kids.

We ended up watching this match--WHY NO LOVE FOR LARSSON IN GM? She is cute as the proverbial bug's bottom! The match was a classic confrontation between a women with one weapon--Larsson--and a woman with, well, no weapons whatsoever. Larsson has a pretty decent forehand. My son has a better backhand. I mean she just sprays it around like a firehose. Halep, on the other hand, couldn't do much of anything. Larsson pretty strolled to a 6-3, 6-2 win. The big surprise for me is that Larsson has a temper. Gave herself a good chewing out at 3-3 and I guess it worked.

Next up we watched Dulko and BoJo. Basically, this was one of those matches where you wonder why Dulko isn't Top 10 all the time. She was on fire. In the first set, her serve was pretty much unreturnable and she was just smacking the ball, volleying beautifully. Second set was much closer, but Dulko was just too good. Dulko was charming after the match, signing autographs and posing for pics right up to the dressing room door. What a sweetheart!

Caught a little bit of Gorges/Cornet. Also some of the doubles match with Schweepers/Oudin against some pair I'd never heard of. Had to leave because tomorrow is the first day of school.

I don't have tickets again until the quarterfinals.

Lena's bangs.

Hey!

How did Arav do!? She won so good bashing right? Is she the hardest hitter than you have ever seen? Did she look happy? How was she playing?

And what about Jules? How much did you see? Did she play well from what you saw? Big forehand today?

Thanks!!

and oh yeah, Sabs is super nice and really attractive :D

WHY NO LOVE FOR LARSSON IN GM? She is cute as the proverbial bug's bottom!

I poured some purple prose about Johanna Jenny's ponytail when she was here. I also think her game is very unusual and interesting, if limited. I mentioned her in the chat thread among the players I thought might appeal to you, in her case on account of blondeness.

Not surprised that you didn't make non-blonde Julinha a priority.

Did you see Peng?

Aug 22nd, 2011, 04:06 PM
I'll try to answer the questions....

What little I saw of Rezai she looked good. I think she looks fitter than she has in the past few months and I thought she was moving better. I don't follow her as closely as I do some other players, but last time I saw her on TV she looked a little heavier. That could have been the TV camera, but she looked several steps fitter compared to my last sighting. She could be dangerous.

I wish I'd watched more of Julia and Alize. Julia's forehand was inconsistent, but when it's on, it is amazing. I also have to do a mea culpa here. I have said in the past I didn't understand what the fuss was about. But she's gorgeous and she has got game, if she can play consistently. But I still like Larsson better--who is of course in the LOB Reserves and has been for quite some time.

Herbert, a couple of the ball girls had bangs. Have to ask my son what he thought of them as they were more in his age range.

Didn't see Peng, much as I would have liked to. I saw some other players I didn't recognize or whose names didn't click, some of them here for the dubz.

And if anyone is in Dallas and attends when I can't, please feel free to post your thoughts.

Okay. Serve was weak, and I got the impression she and Scheepers hadn't played together much. But they ended up winning fairly convincingly.

Oh, if you care, the other players I couldn't place, but a glance at the web site refreshed my memory: Begu sat behind us during the Dulko/Bo Jo match with a man I assume was her coach, though he was of the age he could have been her dad, I just didn't get a father/daughter vibe, but since they were speaking Roumanian I couldn't say for sure. I saw Greta Arn in the hotel lobby in her civilian clothes and Irina Falconi was wandering around the grounds catching some matches after her loss.

The venue is okay, you sit really close to the courts but the wooden benches abuse your ass. The USTA events I go to have better seats!

Anyway, still looking forward to the quarters.

Thank you for these reports :D

So would you say Julia's forehand is the best on tour when on? And yaeh she is the hottest player ever :hearts: :worship:

And Arav...hopefully you can see more of her. She was a little bit overwieght in Baku but that is understandable. Was Aravane hitting the hardest out of the players you saw? If she plays well, she can win the title!

Hard to say when I haven't seen other players live. Here and Aravane were definitely hitting it hard. BoJo hits pretty hard, but was having control issues. Larsson's forehand is funky but effective as all get out. It's hard to describe. Dulko definitely hit the most variety, but can put some pace on the ball.

It's been SO LONG since I went to a high-level match like this. I go to the USTA men's even here in Dallas, but they all play such a similar style I'd forgotten how different it is to see top flight players who have grown and developed their game to the next level up close and personal. It's so much better than on TV. You can read the spin and pace so much better.

USTA level really IS just ball bashing. Even though I know yes, those guys would win against these girls. I've seen the same thing working high-level girl's juniors matches as an official though. Once you get to a certain point it really is the ability to do little things well that are the difference between a college player and a USTA/ITF player, and an ATP/WTA player.

Nothing new or insightful there, I know, but sometimes get a big 2x4 of obviousness upside your head works wonders. Just like the sight of Lena with bangs.

Larsson should try bangs.

Seriously how are they playing tennis in these conditions? I see that Dallas has daytime temperatures of 42 Celsius and 75% humidity, and at night the temperature is still 35 C. This is like 20 degrees hotter than the Austrailian Open danger index where all matches are halted.

I was there yesterday. I am amazed that they are able to play in this heat. It is horrible. All 3 courts start at 5:30. The temp was 102 when they started. I was only able to sit through the first set of Lisicki and Mirza, then had to go to the dining area to cool off. During change overs they put the ice packs around their necks, but still... After the first match it starts to cool off considerably.

Miffed Max, thanks for the invite to post in your thread. I’ll try to do you proud.

My daughter and I arrived about 5:10. When we arrived Oudin was warming up on court 1. She was working on her serve with her coach. We walked around to check out the vendor booths. As we were passing one booth, a lady asked if we wanted and autograph from one of the players, we said yes. She said this is Irina. {embarrassed} Not thinking, I blurt out Spirlea? She says no Falcona. I apologize profusely, and she was really nice about. To my defense, I had just read that post on here about the bodyguard and the famous bump. After this, we decide to go take our seats. As Miffed Max stated, Lisicki is much smaller than she appears on TV. She wore a white top and a white skirt. Mirza wore a pretty blue with a few other mixed in colors. The first set was very entertaining. Mirza hits some really solid shots. I just believe Lisicki was too strong for her. The crowd cheered mostly for Lisicki. After the 1st set, we had to go cool off.

When we went back Melani and Akgul were warming up. Akgul took control of this match right from the start. It is clear that Melani has the desire, she tries so hard. The power was just too much. Akgul was hitting really hard. I haven’t been a fan of Melani, but after watching her play you just kind of want to will her to win. It’s becoming clear to me that this is a big girls (power) game; the same with Mirza, (power wise). Anything can happen, but I think Melani would have lost if Akgul hadn’t been hurt. We left this court after the 1st set.
Next we went to catch some of Wickmayer and Arvidsson. These girls were playing some great tennis. I thought this match should have been on stadium court rather than court 3, but I guess they figured more people would want to see Melani. Both players were moving well, both were hitting very hard. Both girls are pretty. Loved Yanina’s hot pink, it looked good against her skin tone. During the match they announced that Lisicki would be signing autographs in the dining area, so we decided to head that way. I’m glad that we did because they were giving out posters to first 20 people in line. The poster is of the “Stong is Beautiful” campaign. It has pictures of Lisicki, Arvidsson, Mattek-Sands and Wickmayer. My daughter was able to get an autograph and picture with Sabine.

Since my daughter had school today, we left after that. I really wanted to see Cibulkova but daughter still had homework to finish.

So I've been there the last two days and will be there for the whole week.

Some highlights from the first two days:

*Bitchy Alize was on display during her match. One time she was walking to her chair and the ball kid ran to give her her towel. He held it out to her the whole time she was walking up to him and by him and and as soon as he put his arm down, Alize stuck her arm out and snatched it from him. She was constantly hitting the balls away from the ballkids in between points when they were running to get them.

-Bojana's grunt is horrible. It sounds like she's sneezing from the very tips of her toes. I don't know if she's always like this, but she just seemed so disinterested throughout the whole match. All Dulko had to do was keep the ball in court.

-I was pretty impresses with Johanny Jenny. It was the first time I'd seen her play before and based on what I'd read from all of you I wasn't sure what to expect. For some reason, I didn't think she was as tall as she is.

-Sorana had one of her fingers taped. Gajdosova, quite honestly, had a terrible call towards the end of the second set...one of Sorana's serves was an obvious let and the ump didn't call it. After yelling at the chair for a few minutes, she pretty much fell apart after that. Overall it was a pretty ugly match, they were both hitting the back fence just about as often as they were getting it in the court.

-Quite honestly, I was really impressed with Melanie yesterday. Maybe it's just me, but after seeing her, it's so hard not to like her (and I did NOT like her before.) Amanmuradova was up 5-2 when I got there. Mel was really hanging with her, but wasn't taking advantages of the opportunities she was given. There's a huge difference between Amanmuradova's 1st and 2nd serves so if Melanie could get a look at a 2nd (and she did get plenty of them) she was able to get on the offensive in the point pretty quickly. Amanmuradova's injury was pretty ugly, Mel hit a winner up the line and when she changed direction to chase it, is when it happened. After seeing the trainer in between sets, she tried to continue, but couldn't get her serve in the court and finally had to stop.

-On the other hand, I have no idea what happened with Wickmayer. The official reason was a lower back injury, and I'm pretty sure something had to have happened for her to get bagelled by Arvidsson, but nothing looked terribly off to me in the short period of time I was there.

-So after those two quick retirements, the only match going for for a while was Cornet/Parmentier vs. Falconi/Tweedie Yates. Story used to be (not sure if she still is) a teaching pro at the site so there were a lot of people there to support her. When I got there, Story and Irina were giggling about how their names were abbreviated on the scoreboard and how they were playing Team Parmesan since Pauline's name was showing as just PARME. The guys sitting in the stands behind me were cracking on the fact that Alize and Pauline wore the same (hideous) dress and cheering raucously for "Team Amurrica." Alize is still wearing the black ribbon on her dress, but Pauline isn't. Interesting.

I started yesterday watching Zahlavova Strycova/Baltacha, because as many of you know, I'm obsessed with the Czechs. And cause I wanted to see a Barbora tantrum in the flesh. Baltacha insists on getting the balls only from one corner and was davai-ing like mad. Naturally, as soon as I settled into Lisicki/Mirza, I heard Barbora screaming for like 5 minutes about something.

Cibulkova/Lucic was way closer than the score indicated, many of the games in the 2nd set had multiple deuces. Towards the end, Lucic started whining about some line calls and pretty much went away quietly. I sat next to Domi's box in this match and with all the POJ POJ I was hearing, I was expecting to see Kvitova somewhere.

I didn't catch much of Arn/Bondarenko, but after the handshake, there were words exchanged (mainly by Arn) and it did not seem friendly.

I'm also tweeting like it's my job from the site, feel free to follow me for my snarky rants - @crazylace01

Max - hope to see you on QF day!

Crazylace, I guess Larrson must not have hit any backhands while you were watching.

Seriously, like I said she does have a great if somewhat unorthodox forehand and her serve has good movement on it, hard to read and decent though not overwhelming power. She's pretty slender, which I think makes her look smaller than she actually is.

The heat is pretty bad. I was soaked just watching. Larsson and Halep were standing in the corner in this miserable little patch of shade between points at one end during their match. I will say this is an abnormally hot summer, and I hope this doesn't damage the events ability to attract players in the future. This facility has hosted a USTA women's event for years, but it was in September which might be a little cooler.

Interestingly, my young associate says it's worse watching than it is playing in the heat because you have more time to think about how miserable and hot you are. He's been playing and practicing every day all summer.

P3, not to pry, but is your daughter a player?

Personally, I had more issues with the heat yesterday than Monday, but overall it hasn't been that bad. I haven't seen any medical timeouts for potential heat issues or anything so the players are handling it pretty well.

And Max, I didn't stay that long at Johanna's match since I was pretty sure I'd be losing my eyesight from the sun shining on my eyes. You're right about it being hotter than normal though, I've gone to the 50K in July the last two years and don't remember it being this hot...and then on the flipside I remember freezing my ass off at the 50K last November.

I thought the old 50K was a Sept. tournament. Not that there's that much difference in our neck of the woods.

The local pro soccer and baseball teams are surviving the heat, too. Not to get into a pissing match among various sports, my point is simply that other pro athletes are playing under the same conditions.

Hey Max, I will take the opportunity to report some Monday and Tuesday matches I saw.

Monday. I got there at 5:30 the heat is unbearable. I got tickets for Grandstand.

First match: Barbora Zalhavova vs Baltacha. Bally was all red herself and wearing all yellow, she is such a nice lady, very kind with ball boys at one point she got a foot fault call, and she asked which feet was it, right one right? Yeah I knew it, she said. Barbora hits a pretty good ball, but she was arguing and yelling a lot. At one point she told the chair umpire, " You've got to be . . ." And the Ump said "Sorry (Like in I did not hear)", and she went exactly You've got to be sorry for that call.
At another time between games the ump was looking to her side of the court and she said " What? What? Why are you looking at me?"
Bally is a fighter and she won the match.

I saw a little bit of Shahar Peer vs Yakimova. Did not see much of it, but the first thing that surprised me is how fit Shahar looks in person, almost cute. She was hitting the ball pretty good and won easily.

Then I went to see Greta Arn versus Kateryna Bondarenko. Bondarenko was not really doing much but Greta was very erratic a doing lot of unforced errors.
The highlight for me was that seating exactly behind me was Alona and their coach. She is extremely petite, and althought I have no right to qualify her looks or beauty, I can tell you that those K-Swiss add were extremely photoshopped. I was about to leave when I saw an exotic lady on a cool hat waiting the changeover to get inside the Grandstand, it was Aravanne Rezai. Naturally I went back and stayed watching the game a watching Aravanne watching the game, she was alone, pretty reserved and looking at her phone. She looks great, beautiful eyes. I took a picture of her on the stands, I will post it along with some pics of the matches in the next few days.

Julia Gorges and Alize were also watching the games but on a reserved zone.

germex

Sabine Lisicki vs Brianti. Sabine is playing really well, she was struggling a bit with her serve, I mean when she got the first serve in it was great she won several easy points with it, it is a pretty heavy serve, but she missed a lot of first serves, sometimes you can tell before she hits the ball that it is going to be a fault because her toss is erratic, and I think she serves anyway even if she feels that her toss is off target.
She overpowered Brianti, and she is in great shape as she played Monday and Tuesday at 5:30 in both cases, at that time of day it is even hard just to be sitting watching the game, I can only imagine how it i to be playing in such conditions.
On another note, Lisicki looks great, she was wearing all white (smart thing to do by the way for the Texas sun), plus she is so tall and all smiles. After the game, she stepped out of the court, and stopped for a while to have pictures taken and to sign some autograph, so she is clearly a crowd favorite.

Rezai vs Ribarikova. Alo played at 5:30 PM. When I saw Aravanne losing the first set I thought she was done, with all the heat, and when you see her and compare her body to Ribarikova or the Bondarenkos or Dulko she looks almost chubby. So her physical condition was a concern for me.
But in reality she was only getting her grove on, she started playing great on the middle of the second set. She hits a very powerful ball, I saw her more confident with her backhand, sometimes even running around to hit it from that side. Her serve is good and she seems to be playing with more determination now, hopefully her troubles are past behind her, and she can move up several spots on the rankings.

Dulko vs Begu. I saw most of the first set on that one.
Dulko had a bandage on her thigh I do not if that was a factor or not (It does not look like it was since she was moving all right), but her aim was completely off, she was firing shot wide and long mainly, she was trying to fire her up, but never could get her game to work.
Begu was serig fine, and to tell you the truth she did not need to do much, as Dulko was taking care of herself.

Larsson vs Peer. Either Larsson is very underrated or she is playing like never before. She was running and getting a lot of shot back and hitting good ground strokes. Peer did not played bad, but Larsson keep fighting.
Shahar was playing better in the second set, and then a controversial decision by the chair umpire make her go wild. Larsson hit a forehand shot and the line judge started to shout "Out" but changed his mind at the middle of the shot, so the umpire called a repeat the point. She was saying, what are you talking about? He called it out, he even made the hand signal, ask him. And that went on for a few minutes, even her coach was shouting to her to move on. She lost a few more points after that and the game. By the way this was the same umpire that called on the Zahlavova match, and in defense of Peer and Barbora he is no good.

germex
Aug 24th, 2011, 02:54 PM
Gorges vs Baltacha. This was a surprise, I tought that Julia would win this one. She has the most beautiful ground strokes, both forehand and backhand, she hits with a lot of power but puts enough top spin in them to make them drop in. I guess that is a difficult balance to keep, because at several times during the match mostly on the second set, she could not keep the ball in, mostly missing by the end line. She has the tendency of getting distracted, with line judges calls, inefficient ballboys and girls, missed shot and on and on. Her coach was trying to get her to focus, but I am not sure if constantly looking at her coach helps her.
Bally is a fighter, very quiet and then she gets pumped up and shouts a loud "COME ON, COME ON". She mixes her balls really good top spin, slices, drop shots a little bit of everything, and when she gets to the net she looks so comfortable in there.
Julia has the better serve, but in the end in a long match 2:40 or so, Bally was the winner, with a better effort and by staying focused at all times.

P3, not to pry, but is your daughter a player?[/quote]
Yes. My daughter is 8. She has just started to play some 10 & U tourney's. She has been playing since age 3.

Cool. I wish my son had started when he was that young. He's 14.

On other topics, it sounds like the ballkids are still having problems. I thought they'd have it sorted out by now. You hate to pick on a bunch of kids, but frankly I've seen better work at USTA-level events. Although that's really on whoever did the training, really.

All in all though, despite some first year kinks it's been fun and I hope it continues with cooler temps next year. The heat would wilt Lena's bangs.

thanks for all of the updates and remarks guys

i'm +1 for Larsson as well. didn't see why she's that special as some may have said here, but she is willing to run around the ball, uses her slices well and the forehand side is effective.
she's also very cute.

In all the matches I saw the ball kids were having problems. At some games the have, very small boys and girls, I am guessing some as young as 7 yo or so. And they look like they had poor trainning or at least not enough of it, plus the ungodly heat.
The line judges are not doing too good either.

Can you guys say something about Oudin?

Her result were just posted.
How was she playing before she lost?

She started out really well. But once she got up *3-1 and got broken back she just fell apart. You really do get the sense that she has no clue out there.

I don't mean to be cruel, and I understand that Oudin is never going to have a willowy, Lena of the Bangs build. But in her doubles match she looked to me like she was not as fit as she has been in the past.

Also, it dawned on me the lad and I are going Friday, not Thursday. Still hoping some of us will be able to say "hi."

The weather should have been much better tonight--a little rain and lots of cloud cover, at least in Dallas proper. Not sure about the 'burbs.

The wind was crazy and there was pretty much a dust storm. Got pretty cloudy, but no rain on site. Made for a much more enjoyable evening.

And Max, I'll be there Friday too.

Hasn't been this much carnage in Dallas since JR got shot.

Any reports on Aravane?

I have a picture of her looking very cool sitting in the stands, I should be able to post it today or tomorrow.

Play wise, I think she is getting her confidence back, she hits the ball very hard and flat, and her backhand is specially good, she moves fairly fine, and she showed a lot of spirit on her game against Ribarikova.

Okay, so I can't read a schedule any more than I can shake my adoration of Lena's bangs.

We're going to the semis, not the quarters. So looking forward to seeing Sabs! Think Soranna will be there for dubz, too.

And yes, I will probably be for Rezai just because rotten old Kerber beat Larsson. :ras:

I was watching a set of one game and then a few games of another, but you probably were doing that same thing, we might have been on line waiting for a game to end to get into a court at the same time.

Oh oh! Crazylace and I know each other's secret identities now!:p

The youth dragged me home before the doubles, because I would have liked to visit some more before I left and maybe get a pic of us both.

Next year (assuming there is) let's definitely do a better job of planning on meeting up, even if it's just for a few minutes. It's really fun to be able to put faces with friends.

I'll do a report later. I'm just wiped out right now. Not even Lena's bangs could fire me up.

Great pix, btw! :yeah:

As Begu stepped on the court, she felt a strange force pass through her, a bizarre desire to see how often she could hit the net with her serve. "By the bangs," she said to herself, "there is a true Dementieva fan here...

How else can I explain the first match last night? Begu was awful. Sabs didn't have to do much at all. She did hit some insane serves (the fastest I spotted was 118 mph, but I didn't always check the speeds if they got returned). Begu actually did okay if she could get into rallies--she hits the ball really hard--but Sabs is just in another league in terms of speed. She really gets to a lot of balls.

Again, seeing her live, there is a lot more variety and smarts to Sabs' game than you see on TV. She has a nice little dropper and she varies the pace on her groundstrokes really well. Some of her aces weren't all the fast, either, just really well-placed. And she does move really well--like on the point of the match where she returned two overheads before winning it.

Anyway, she quickly cruised to a 6-0 win. She called for her coach and Begu called for the trainer. Second set, Sabs jumped out to another big lead and Begu finally started to swing away. Like I said she does have some potent groundies and she did manage to get on the board before Sabs closed it out. Afterwards, Sabs was very nice, signed lots of autographs and laughed at all the lame pickup lines guys threw at her.

2nd match was very different. Rezai really is a one dimensional player. She really does just smack the ball like it owes her money. Kerber was pretty much playing the same game. As you might have guessed from the score, this was a very back and forth match, though I always felt like it was on Rezai's racket. Kerber did hit some very good winners, but it was really Rezai who defined how good--or bad--the level of play was.

Definitely a little bit of fireworks. Rezai yelled "Shit" after missing one shot. Kerber bitched about calls--with good reason--and smashed her racket after being broken in the third set. I dunno. Maybe it's because I'm still biased against her for beating Jo-La but she annoyed me.

Anyway, like I said my son was ready to bail after that, so I did. Had a great time. Shame I'll miss the finals, but just too busy with kid stuff.

^^^ Nice report.

Even on TV, Sabs has always appeared (to me) to have plenty of shots and accessories. Her biggest problem I've been feeling is how to put them together, which is a common problem among these lovely ladies.
