Unbelievably horrid play from both. I'm completely pissed at Jelena--knew it was over after the 2nd set was lost. All in all, a great week for her though. Hope she carries it to the USO.

Masha--it took you a while, and it wasn't pretty, but of course, you're one of the best fighters on this tour. Congrats on the title.

Can someone teach these girls how to fucking hit a serve? MY GOD, lots of drama i give you that, but damn... so incredibly frustrating watching that shitty quality. Luckily for maria she's playing the only person with a worse serve then hers or she'd be smoked 4-6 2-6.

These girls won't make it far at the usopen with a slightly difficult draw.

I loved the drama. JJ complaining about everything, Martha's ice cold death stares, her mooing getting even louder and louder, her COME ON's at anything, DF's flowing, JJ's BH going to Hawaii... It makes up for the poor quality to me.

This match just didn't happen, did it  Disgusting quality, disgusting stats...It was almost as bad as Peer-Lisicki :o
Jelena and Maria really dislike each other: JJ complaining about Maria in the first set, Maria's come on'ing on JJ's obvious errors  Challenges, racket smashing

The only positive was that I love them both and I didn't care much who'd win this :sobbing: They both need to step it up for the Open...

Jelena was really close but she was too passive in the tb and got tight (a bit understable but still :o) each 3 times she had to hold to confirm her break in the 3rd.It would have been so great to see her take the title here after such a long time struggling but she seems on tracks again.Ricardo is back and she had a much better attitude this week so many good things overall.

Good fight from Maria but she acted like a utter b*tch.Even Ivanovic would have been ashamed to celebrate ues the way Maria did.

Great day for WTA when their final finally overshadow ATP one from same event.
Its not that promising in opening set which is double one-seeded (in 1st half Maria totally dominate, in 2nd JJ), but 2nd and 3rd set is just great thing for WTA tour (they both played in past on higher level of course, but I'm talking about intensity, drama and desire to win from both).

I'm still with my statement from www-Cincy poll thread that real winner of this tournament is Jelena Jankovic, no matter what will happen in final.

She isn't. She wasn't playing passivly on purpose - Sharapova hits the ball so hard it almost made Jelena drop her racquet a couple of times. It's a normal number of winners against that kind of an opponent.

While I immediately deleted this match from my DVR after its conclusion, I agree in an odd sort of way.
This was a long, hard match where emotions ran high and both players really struggled to keep it together mentally. I like matches where you just can't call it. The play was shitty, but the drama was topnotch.

Ugh, until 4-1 in the first it was amazing. Maria showed her 2008 AO form, then she completely fell apart. But it was good tennis the first set.

Then it was a torture.

Maria hits a DF ON EVERY SINGLE IMPORTANT POINT! Her 'serve-mentality' is worse than Dementieva at her very worst. Maria is just awful sometimes and just keeps proving to everyone she will never ever win a slam again with a head like that. She is such a mental midget on serve it´s not even funny.

Jankovic on the other hand was so useless the third set anyone from TOP50 would beat her.

From a good match it turned out to a absolute shitfest, an insult to the game of tennis.

I just dont know why some of you are saying "jelena is BACK"? clearly she s not back, titles are counting only, and she didnt win one since last IW...

She had a different attitude this week that at the beginning of the year (when her game was almost back but she never really found enough confidence to capitalize) and the impact of Ricardo being back is already visible.Sure she was too nervous today and wasted her chances but the match was tense and as you said she hadn't been in a position to win a big title for so long that it's not surprising.
Overall it's a good week for her : last time she won a match was at FO and out of nowhere she almost won a Premier 5.

Maria has won her second title of 2011 at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati. Maria defeated No.13 seed Jelena Jankovic of Serbia 4-6 7-6 6-3 in 2 hours and 49 minutes. Congratulations Maria!

This is Maria's 24th singles title and her second Premier 5 title of 2011.

In the rankings Maria will move up to No.4 with 6346 points (Maria's highest ranking coming back from shoulder surgery over two years ago). Following Kim Clijsters withdrawal from the US Open, Maria will be seeded No.3 there. In another rankings jump, Maria is now No.1 in the race to the WTA Championships.

Maria will now take the next week off to prepare for the final Grand Slam of the year at the US Open. The US Open will begin on August 29th.

What makes you think Jankovic didn´t bent over? She was up 2-0, 5-4 and 6-5 in the 2nd set. Before and after the two service games at 5-4 and 6-5 Maria lost her serve like eight times, yet Jankovic didn´t even manage a single matchpoint in both service games. In the 3rd set Jankovic went up a break THREE times and still lost. JJ choked every time she had an opportunity to shut the door on Maria.

The one who had problems shutting the door in the entire match would be Pova, actually. She was ahead 0-30 or 30-0 in SO many games throughout this match and kept screwing up. How many 2nd serve returns did she bunk on BPs today? She had a total of 22 break points and only won 8. :help:

Bottom line is, Maria should have won this in straight sets. Her farcical collapse in form was the only thing causing this to be a dramatic match in the first place. But still a great week for JJ to build on, well done to her.

It was a special match for both but I think they will bring much better tennis at the USO.Jelena showed great things against Petko and today she had her moments. She is still a bit short in term of matchplay but she's getting her game back just in time for the USO.And game wise, Maria's has been very up and down all year but she's also been very realistic and made the most out of her draws. She's not that far to be n°1 again and will be playing on her best surface so she'll be extra-motivated.
With Serena being back, players like WOz, Petra or Vera who will have to deal with a lot of pressure etc...it could be a very interesting USO.

That match set women's tennis back 5 years, easily. I turned after it

That final line is hilarious. Mostly because it took Jankovic about a minute to decide to challenge at any point. Maria will win in a 3-setter that's even uglier than her match against Zvonareva.

Never In Doubt.

Weird how my feelings about Maria's chances at the US Open are pretty much the exact reverse of last year... last year, I thought her game was in great shape, but was worried about whether her nerve would hold in pressure situations... this year, I'm not convinced by her game, but I'm in absolutely no doubt that she'll be mentally the stronger in tight matches - and as Kim has showed the last couple of years, the latter is probably the better situation to be in with the WTA in it's current state.

Well, ok, a REALLY high-quality match like that is always enthralling even if there isn't much drama. But take just a "good" quality match, e.g. Wozniacki-Zvonareva in the Beijing final - technically a good (but not great) match going by the stats, but boring to watch imo. Today's was much more interesting than that match, despite being of lower quality.

But Wozniacki matches are never good technically

Give me a high quality match over "drama" any day. I'll take a Venus-Henin USO semi over this crap anytime.

So much truth in this statement. If people want to watch drama go watch "Jersey Shore" and the Situation be a douche bag. When I watch tennis I don't want to see the mess I saw today.

no matter how many times you repeat it, you won't take it from Maria:wavey:
Even when she is choking and playing her worst tennis, she still refuses to lose to serbian pusher:cheer:
Title Nr.24 and mental demons of the final are finally conquered:bowdown:
Where's the thread on Maria having no class for yelling "come on" at JJ's unforced errors.

Yeah, just what I thought.

Happy for Martha/Masha/Maria ! Would rather see her win than JJ. Good for the WTA that she is getting back to her best over the last 6 months.

I watched every point of this very entertaining match and by the end of the second game it was clear that this match had nothing to do with tennis!

News Flash! From The Chief Assistant to The Assistant Chief At Tennis Headquarters In Kabul, Afganistan: The next match between Maria Sharapova and Jelena Jankovic will be played on a thoroughly saturated clay surface without a net, racquets or balls. The winner will be the first player to crawl out of the mud with the other's top in hands or teeth. Scratching out both of the opponent's eyes will be a disqualifying Hindrance.

Federer doesn't show any emotion.

A girl with a similar personality could draw big crowds if she has a big game (and is good looking).
She would also need to have Princess Diana's charisma.

Sure he does! I've seen him yell, scream, smash his racket, and curse out an umpire!

Of cousre Federer shows emotion. He also happens to be the greatest ever and probaly ever will be so thats why he draws sell out crowds every time. The reason why WTA crowds suck is because womens tennis players largely dont appeal to men, a few do like Ivanovic,Wozniacki,Azarenka, goerges as they are feminine... But if you look at the crowds at most other matches, you don't see many guys in the stands, maybe 5-10% You could'nt say that for ATP matches where its normaly 50/50. Alot of you won't like hearing that but its the truth ...

I turned it off at 4-6,4-5 and I just knew Maria would win

JJ was pretty bad i thought, and Maria sunk herself to jelena's level.

:haha: at every time Jelena would complain.

it was a pretty entertaining final. i miss the days when these two were consistent top 5

This. At least Lena tried to get it in and, you know, it just didn't....

Maria plays much worse than this on a bad day. Look at her IW SF. Look at her USO loss last year.
She wasnt that bad today, just like against Vera in the semi. That level will beat most of the tour.
This is her game now. This wasnt a surprise.

Even though it was a hot mess match but it was full of drama. The bitch stare, the complaints, the COME ONs, the two Serbs who was escorted out, the racket breaking, the smirks when Maria hit awful shot, the DFs on the most crucial points. I can go on and on

Don't forget about that part when Maria got confused about whether or not there were new balls and Kader had to remind her that they had already changed them and that she had already changed her racket.

Her fragileness on the serve is worrying though. ONE bad service game and she goes totally off the boil. Hmmm...but she regrouped and toughed out the win.

In terms of quality it was a trainwreck, but I still can't remember a time when I was so emotionally invested in a match. The momentum swings were ridiculous, and some of the misses were downright laughable, but for every 10 mishits there was a spectacular winner that made watching this hot mess worthwhile. Maria showed once again that she is one of the great competitors in the history of this sport and it took all of her mental fortitude to scrape out this win. Despite how bad she was at times, it's hard to criticize Maria when she tries this hard. It turned out to be a dramatic, compelling match, and this type of win could be a turning point for Shazza, no matter how ugly it was. Bring on the Open.
