Confirmed on twitter

Clijsters statement: "“Unfortunately, I will not be able to defend my US Open title this year because of a stomach muscle injury (left rectus abdominus strain). Two weeks of rehab was not enough to heal this injury. Obviously I’m very disappointed. I trained very hard this summer and felt in a good shape to play the US Open.”

As expected, this type of injury dosen't heal quickly.

The USO is very wide open this year... with Cijsters out, Vika & Serena potentially not 100% fit either, Kvitova struggling on HC as usual and Caro in the middle of a huge switch this really is anybody's tournament to win.

To be fair, being out of the top ten might be the best thing that comes out of this. That means she won't be obliged to play the tournaments she doesn't want to play, and that alone would prevent some injuries and keep her motivated for the ones she does want to play.

Fuck.

I guess the yearlong countdown begins. I'm sure she'll stick around to play the USO in 2012 after the Olympics now. She doesn't want her last USO before retirement to be a withdrawal (although that is exactly what happened in 2006, right?) I wonder why she said she'll play OZ, Olympics and 'maybe' the USO next year. You have two more Majors to play, Kimberly.

I don't think you are the thread on this forum if you make a statement like that.

Throught out their career, this forum has never been kind to Serena or Venus withdrawing, at ttimes they have taken at as personal insult.
But you don't have to go that fart, check the thread about Serena's withdraw, and compare ti Azarenka Withdraw and Kim withdraw.
After you have comeback and retract this statement.

I'm not saying that some people aren't mean... but they get fewer insults in withdrawal threads I reckon. And even if they don't an eye for an eye is hardly the right way for folks to respond.

But everyone goes on about how Serena and Venus need to come back to 'Save the WTA' but I feel that Kim is almost (or indeed moreso than Venus these days) as important for the tour in that regard. And yet nobody's saying that for her. They're just calling her fat.

This is a very bad news. :(

It's never good when the depending champion is out. The game so desparately needs all of its top players competing at the big events.

Wishing Kim a quickly recovering and come back strong at the AO next year. It's clear that she won't even make the YEC this year to depend it.

The only thing to be worry is when Kim is out this long, she could get pregnant again. We all known she loves kids and when both parties wandering around in the house all that time :scared:. Bryan, dont do anything stupid.:tape: There are Slams and the Olympic next year for Kim to play.

Like many Great champions Evert / Nav /Graf /Seles /Serena /Venus ( i might miss a few) ..They all went thru instances that theire body's and mind where breaking down, but NEVER in the history of the WTA did they QUIT like she did. And that's what makes a true Champion they never run away when they hit hard times. They stick with, get the beat downs accept the losses.

But I can't say I expected anything else.

A few months ago, I was almost certain she wasn't going to retire anytime soon, because, despite what people here claim, it's obvious that she was very much enjoying playing ... but, now that she's getting this constant stream of injuries, I do fear that she's going to start wondering if it's worth it. Really hope she can get some luck and get healthy and can come back 100%, because she still has 2-3 years left of quality tennis left in her imo.

Really hope we see her going for 4 US Opens in a row next year :worship:

i guess there is no big deal. I mean while Serena was ranked #1 she had to have knee surgery and then her sister was murdered and yet she came back 6 months later. But Justine was tired of the game so she had to immediately retire and remove herself from the rankings.

The world revolves around Serena Williams.

I do not condone posters insulting Kim or any other players for withdrawing.

My main point remains Venus ans Serenus have gotten the harshest of treatment when withdrawing then anybody.

In addition to the vicious posts in this weeks Serena Withdraw thread, there another one created with the propsotion that they have set an an all-time record withdrawing from tournament?
What do you the intent of such thread is?
It isn't certainly to wish Serena speedy recovery , ist it?

As for Kim withdrawing in this USO, frankly, it was not a suprsie to me at all and have aready said so.
I think the thread title should not have BOMBSJELL in it, it shoudl say, "As Initially Feared, Two Time Defending Champion..."

Bummer. I'm not a big Clijsters fan by any means, but she's one of only three players who at least have the guts to go toe-to-toe against Serena in a big match (Venus and Sharapova being the other two). Hopefully this doesn't discourage her too much, because I'd like to see her have a proper send-off into retirement at the US Open. Get will Kim!

Why? So Maria and Serena can meet in the finals? That's a forgone conclusion.

I think your concern should be directed at the failure of the generation that was supposded to follow Venus, Serena, Henin, Kim.
Women players approaching 30 should have stronger challnges from the younger generation than we are seeing now.
That is where my concern is , not those who reaching retirment.

Everyone knew Seles, Steffi, Arantxa would be taking over when Martina, Chrissy retired.
That Venus, Serena, Davenprot, Hingis, Capriati, Henin, Kim would take over when Seles, Steffi, Arantxa retire.
Hingis was a transitional figure from Seles-Steffi-Arantxa( - Gabby) era to Venus-Serena-Davenpot-Hingis-Capriati-Henin-Kim

At this moment, no one really knows who will lead the WTA when Venus, Kim,Serena retire.
I believe this uncertainity prompted Henin, Kim and Hingis to come back.
There was even a rmor of Davenport coming back, but that was qucikly squashed by her pregnancy

...I just hate the fact that all WS fans want us to NEVER believe in Maria's chances...
Not so. I think you and some of your fellow Maria fans are waaaay too sensitive when it comes to WS fans - Serena Fans in particular. Many of us, myself included, have a great deal of respect for Maria/her game. It's hard not to considering we see much of the WS influence (Especially Venus') in her game. Imitation is flattery and all. In fact, you be hard pressed to find WS fans who say Maria's been disrespectful to the WS or anything like that. Maria has (as far as I remember) always been very respectful to them. Yuri, of course, is a different story.

My guess is - because I don't speak for the whole fan base - that the biggest problem most of us have with Maria is that she was OVER-HYPED from the very beginning, and what the implies about what US culture values and DOESN'T value. So it was more about an ATTITUDE that she represented that drew/draws so much hostility. Add to the fact that she has not lived up to the hype only magnifies the response.

The second biggest problem, and perhaps the most "petty", on at least my part, is that in '04 Maria DID steal Serena's thunder for a while. That sucked! I'm not ashamed to admit that, especially because Maria (and the tennis establishment) has been reminded it was a "no, no" by Serena so many times since.

So, many of us WS fans always know Maria has "chances," no matter how slight they may be. She's formidable when her game is on. But if she continues as she has it's also fair for us WS fans to criticize her chances as well.

I know the hype thing can bother you but so far did it really help Maria's case, I mean, people always expect a lot from her even after her comeback media were already saying that she was the fave for almost every major and pressure got to her many times because she had still a lot of trouble adjusting with her serve yet media was praising her.
As for the battle against Serena, that's the same all those blablabla clearly pushed Serena to put Maria on her hate list and Maria is screwed, I wish media would shut up and admit that Serena deserves more attention because she is the greatest of her generation.

Add to it that after all the beatings they STILL want to talk up Maria as being Serena's equal and then you can have friction.

But as you said, almost every Serena and WS-fan have great respect for Maria. She's no pushover and a great champ.

 You watch that from a achievement perspective but tennis wise and only that it's fair to say that Maria is top 3 one of the greatest talents ever on the WTA tour, these are facts - they reflect perhaps more in the past than in the present because actually that one serve deteriorates a good part of her game anyways the medias saw that in 2004 can't blame them.

Serena does have some talent and I would put in the top 20 or 30 of the most talented girls out there, she's not as naturally skilled - her serve is a jewelry and world's 8th wonder but it shadows most of her enormous failures in her game such as movement or technique... for instance Bartoli (underrated here) has much more intrinsic talent than Rena, Stosur she developed too late and ruined her potential but she too > Rena.

Just my quick thoughts on what you stated, nothing wrong.

 You watch that from a achievement perspective but tennis wise and only that it's fair to say that Maria is top 3 one of the greatest talents ever on the WTA tour, these are facts...No its not, stop right there. Goodness gracious, I couldnt read anymore after that. Youre like a monkey smashing the keyboard. Not even trying to make sense.

Yes it is.

For instance there are plenty of girls out there able to do much more things than Rena and are completely underrated in terms of pure talent on this board, Bartoli is one of them, perhaps Stosur, Wozniacki at her peak would snatch Rena any version but she's more of a clown nowadays... and many more.

Maria pre-2008 is an incredible player, both physically and especially technically/tennis-wise speaking, the most mesmerizing player we have ever witnessed men or women, singles or doubles, legend singles, mixed doubles, mixed or legend doubles [...] these are facts - and obviously even the media were able to take hold of them in 2004.

What evidence supports those "facts?" prove it.

Evidence is technique and should you pay closer attention to Maria's technique overall she's pin point perfect - as I said her greatness resided in her pre-2008/2009 self as nowadays she's much of a struggle. She has everything in her repertoire but would prefer to use what works best for her, power.

Rena is not a difficult player to be technically and tennis-wise better than since her unique weapon is serve, mind you I don't underestimate the power of such a weapon it has brought her 13 majors but in every other department bar serve she's top 50 in wise people's books.

Technique doesn't make someone great. Achievements do.

And if Maria has such great technique then it would translate into success. 3 slams just doesn't cut it.

Don't you know by now, writing the word "facts" is evidence of facts.

I have read many of post like the one you respond to, and one theme run in them: highly tendentious proposition very light in evidence, except they have the word "fact" in them

You're such an idiot. Read back and tell me who brought Maria into the discussion.

It's the second time today where you've told me not to mention a player when someone else before me already has!

And surprise surprise, both are Masha fans. But I suppose discrimination is in your blood.

I never disputed the contrary - many girls > Wozniacki and Caro has the achievements but it'd have been preferable if it were the great talents that had all the big achievements and it's not the case in this era.

And if Maria has such great technique then it would translate into success. 3 slams just doesn't cut it.

Maria wasn't the unique player in this era, Justine, Mauresmo etc... and she's just 24. Lol !

As expected, this type of injury dosen't heal quickly.

The USO is very wide open this year... with Cijsters out, Vika & Serena potentially not 100% fit either, Kvitova struggling on HC as usual and Caro in the middle of a huge switch this really is anybody's tournament to win.

There is nothing wrong with Serena...and hopefully Vika will be ready to play.

Maria fans bringing up Maria's name, don't see the big deal but you OTOH you're only looking for shit and yes I'm a black racist towards black people, I just give up believe what you want or should I say believe what reetards tell you since you love having your brain washed. Puppet.

So Maria fans can only bring up and respond to everything Maria Sharapova?

Does that mean Serena fans can only talk about Serena Williams?

I can respond to whoever or whatever I like thank you very much.

Your logic is twisted. Not surprisingly though, if you get what I mean.

Not unexpected know her type of injury.
I feel for Kim and her fans though, because she won't be able to defend this title.
Would also have been an epic rematch between her and Serena too.

Preach it...as far as shotmaking and natural tennis talent, Maria is one of the best of all time. Unfortunately she doesn't have a body of a trucker to withstand all the grind and physical beatings of the tour, hence all of her injuries and serving woes. But following her is still worth it, even if she drowns herself in unforced errors and DF's, because you can always count on some moments of briliance and screaming winners, which she never fails to deliver. In fact the only thing she needs right now is a stable serve and she would be sweeping all the titles in this pathetic era...one can always hope:drool:
