View Full Version : 16 year old Yulia Putintseva has risen over 400 ranking places in under 3 months!

In May, 16 year old Yulia Putintseva was ranked 655 and now three months later she's rocketed 417 places to be ranked 238. During this period she's won $25,000 Moscow, $25,000 Samsun and $50,000+H Kazan. These are very impressive results for someone of such a young age. She's the best 16 and under in the world by quite some margin. In fact she's probably the best 16 year old since Michelle Larcher de Brito but hopefully (for Yulia's sake) she won't suffer the same fate. She really seems to be on fire as of late. It'll be interesting to see how far she can develop. She's extremely short at 1.56m so that might hinder her at the WTA stage. I've seen her play a few times and have been impressed but haven't watched her since her recent improvement these last few months so I'd love to be able to see how her game has developed. Either way she's definitely one to watch out for in the future. And yes of course I know about her infamous behaviour/antics but that's not really why I'm starting this thread so please keep that talk to a minimum.

Yes, evil Yulia plays some good tennis. Time for the hindrance rule to be toughened up.
On a more serious note, if she continues this way I think by the time she is 18 she will definitely be in the top 100.

Yes I hate her (who doesn't?) but her results are impressive for her age :p That's the point in the thread

I wouldn't draw hasty conclusions from her recent success. She has risen so quickly mostly thanks to her mental toughness - see all the comebacks she's done in Kazan. But from what people reported, her ground game isn't exactly extraordinary. It takes her a lot of energy to win matches ŕ la Larcher de Brito. So I wouldn't be surprised if she disappeared the same way as Michelle.
Having said that, this is good for teen tennis. :yeah:

She's plays good tennis and is a fighter, which is good, but her attitude just makes her deplorable.

I'll look past her attitude for now. Caroline wasn't the best junior attitude-wise. And it took
Vika injuries and a slight tumblr down the rankings and humble her.

But unless she grows anymore, I doubt she'll get to a high ranking consistently It's a shame though. Players like her and Domi - strong players who just aren't gifted with a more athletic build, at least for tennis. But that makes them hard workers I guess.

We'll see how she handles in the big league. Based on Zahlavova Strycova's experience who used to dominte the juniors before not quite coming up as the Novotna's legit replacement I'm not too sure she'll ever be #1 Russian let alone threatening WTA. 1,56 m is very short, far too less to challenge the big & powerful hitters on a regular basis.

From that minute clip. Silly backhand try to the net when in put away position (1.05). Moonball when opponent probably off position (0.16) (should have moved in at 0.11-0.12) Sideways movement look ok. Serve sux.

But seriously how can you hate a person, just because how she reacts on court. That's pitiful. :awww:

And her last name it's not even Hercog.

That's a pretty good reason for disliking a player...:weirdo:

Well she probably has a poor attitude but I'm always pleased to see young players develop really quickly and get good results.

Unfortunately for her, with her 1,56m she might not be tall enough to be a top player. I can't remember such a short girl who made it really far. Tatiana Panova was even shorter I think, and she wasn't even top 20 - but probably not quite as talented.

And it's actually unimportant in the 'no top player' argument I was referring to.

Yes, by 2cm.
Surely those two centimeters cannot make that much of a difference. :p
