Welcome Back to the Amazing Race Tour, here in Birmingham, England.

After a short break, the tour is back and sets to be bigger than ever with Wimbledon just around the corner. Birmingham will offer a great warm up event leading up to the third grand slam of the year. Many players will be looking to seek excellent form before they go into the London championships next week.

World number 1, Anna Chakvetadze still leads in the rankings being the number 1 player since Melbourne but with Wimbledon looming, will we see a shift in the rankings come the end of Season 2? Things are starting to get ery exciting on the tour. There are also a lot of new and exciting prospects playing their first tournament this week; Serena Williams will finally make her debut on the tour and her fellow young compatriots Melanie Oudin and Alison Riske will be present this week also. How will the British hopes deal with the pressure the next two weeks? All eyes will be on Laura Robson and Anne Keothavong but fellow new hope, Heather Watson may cause a stir here. Yet, we cannot forget some of the dangerous players that are lurking in the draw. The likes of Victoria Azarenka, Sabine Lisicki, Ana Ivanovic, Sam Stosur and Alize Cornet will all be present this week.

Points are due by Sunday 14th August 22:00PM GMT. PLease send points to no-hay-igual. Thankyou and Good luck :yeah:

British No. 2 and World # 10, Laura Robson Aims for strong grass season

http://i.thisislondon.co.uk/i/pix/2009/06/3053laura_415x684.jpg

Birmingham, United Kingdom---Laura Robson is coming to Birmingham! In the past year it has been a shocking renewal of British Tennis as Laura Robson and Anne Keothavong have both reached the top 10 of the ART in singles, and Laura and Heather Watson both maintain top 10 spots in Doubles. This week as the tour transitions to the Grass--Laura will attempt to reclaim her status as the British No. 1 in Singles--as Anne Keothavong is coming off an amazing run at Roland Garros, but my sources tell me that Laura is expecting to do terribly this week. So, I implore the crowds at Birmingham to show Laura some support, and just don't expect her to do well. Also--Laura is maintaining that Cibuslutkova will not do well on this tour again as she is often too busy off sleeping with Fernando Verdasco...or whoever Cibuslutkova's new boy toy is. The hope of an entire nation will fall on these young women this week...let us hope that they can defend the home turf beginning with Birmingham. ;)

Double Trouble: Williamses to play Doubles at Birmingham

Watch out! The ART is in for a time of domination! The Champions of the old, no longer in existence WTA Tour have decided to combine their forces--as the incredibly powerful Sisters who have a cornucopia of shots that they can use to torture their opponents have entered the Doubles competition in Birmingham. Venus is evidently the more experienced of the two--as she has been playing on the ART for the entire season; however, we are expecting big things from Serena simply because she is Serena! I think that this combination definitely has a shot--and will definitely be a threat to the World's best players Anna Chakvetadze and Nadia Petrova who are both coached by Beesley (Only...the most legendary coach ever...)

Hopefully their draw will be kind to them...and they will get the chance to play a few easy matches before the tough fights begin!

Peng Shuai (CHN) def. Bojana Jovanovski (SRB)

7-6(5) 6-3

In an exciting time in terms of tennis for China, Peng Shuai got her country off to a perfect start after dispatching the bright young Serb talent, Bojana Jovanovski. The match wasn't without it's difficulties however and Bojana certainly did have a lot of chances, especially in the first set. Peng just played better on the big points, saving an amazing 11 break points which finally broke her opponent's momentum going into the second set. Great job Peng :yeah:

Heidi El Tabakh (CAN) def. Yaroslava Shvedova (KAZ)

3-6 6-3 6-4

Over on court 2, the fans were treated to an exciting three set thriller where newcomer Yaroslava Shevdova caused a stir in her match against experienced Heidi El Tabakh. The Kazakh got off to a beautiful start against the Canadian, converting on her first set point, playing some clasic aggressive tennis. Heidi struggled to come to grips with Yaro's bravery as she kept on moving forward finishing points at the net. However, at 3-1 up in the second set, Yaro became nervy and her tentaive shots were punished by Heidi, taking 5 games on the trot to level. The third set was edgy but Heidi managed to break in the 9th game, sealing the win on her serve and looking very releived afterwards. Great fight from Heidi, great debut from Yaro :yeah:

Heather Watson (GBR) def. Marion Bartoli (FRA)

6-1 1-0 RET

The fans at Edgbaston expected big things in this match between High ranked French player Marion Bartoli against British newcomer Heather Watson. Unfortunately, the match was somewhat of an anti-climax where Heather didnt have to do much today to come out with the win. Marion hit 21 unforced errors in the first set alone, all Heather had to do was put the ball in court. After 8 games of similar play, Marion decided enough was enough and complained of an elbow injury before retiring. Heather looked thrilled though to have won her first ART match and will advance to the second round.

Zheng Jie (CHN) def. Vania King (USA)

7-5 6-3

In which was always going to be a tough encounter for Vania, the American star bowed out today against newly appointed French Doubles champion, Zheng Jie. The match which lasted just under 90 minutes was a clear display of how Zheng will be incredibly tough to be this tournament. This is obviously her best surface and can dominate off both wings making it hard for her opponents to get in the match. Vania played well and showed us how she could be very promising here on the ART tour but she allowed herself to fall prey to Zheng's big hitting and eventually put her head down in the second set. Very interesting match and Jie will move on the next round ;)

Maria Sharapova (RUS) def. Jarmila Gajdosova (AUS)

6-4 7-6(7)

Three words. Maria is Back. A very strong and comfortable performance from the Russian today, coming into this tournament with not a lot of form proved everyone wrong and managed to win the match in straight sets. The match had its twist and turns along the way, the second set alone saw 6 consecutive breaks, Jarka even had a set point at 6-5 in the final set tiebrake. It is clear that we will be seeing big things from Gajdosova this year, her quick feet and solid baseline play will cause problems for many players on the ART tour but Maria knew how to handle it today and is looking quite dangerous this week.

Eugenie Bouchard (CAN) def. Gisela Dulko (ARG)

3-6 6-4 6-3

A very impressive win for the young Canadian today and this tournament seems to be about the young talent coming through after Eugenie follows suit after Heather Watson's match. Eugenie also follows compatriot Heidi El Tabakh into the second round after a gutsy display against South America's number 1 player, Gisela Dulko. Gisela looked a little lost in thought after the first set and completely changed her game plan to suit Eugenie's style of play. Gisela is a good player but needs to focus more if she wants to make it to the top.

Jelena Jankovic (SRB) def. Claudine Schaul (LUX)

6-4 4-6 6-4

:o in a terrible match from both players, one might have forgiven Jelena for only making 2 winners in the whole match had they seen the error count from Claudine. A total of 48 unforced errors from Claudine's racker plagued her performance, some not even bouncing on her side of the court before they hit the net. Jelena was worse at times, hitting 7 consecutive double faults on her service games, the crowd became increasingly curious to who actually was going to win the match. Finally in the last game, Jelena began to piece things together and broke forcing Schaul's 48th error of the match but how far can we actually expect Jankovic to go in this tournament?

Melanie Oudin (USA) def. Kim Clijsters (BEL)

6-3 4-6 6-4

In what has been frankly an horrific season from Kim Clijsters, took a turn for the worse today after coming up short against rising talent Melanie Oudin. Kim looked uninterested at times and even when Melanie became edgy in her debut match could not find a way to win points in the match. Although Melanie played a weak second set, Kim only just about got away with it and was clearly only second best on the day. Melanie is looking great on the grass and has a big future ahead of her but has to calm those nerves if she wants to get to the latter stages of the tournament :yeah:

Lesia Tsurenko (UKR) def. (16) Aravane Rezai (FRA)

6-3 7-5

And the tournament loses it's first official casualty today in the form of Aravane Rezai who can only be described as a hot mess out on court today. At times, she was brilliant, rallying comfortably and going for some tricky, powerful shots which payed off at some crucial moments. But her inconsistency was the problem here today and newcomer Lesia Tsurenko had that in abundancy. Lesia hardly put a foot wrong all match, making a respectable 14 winners in the match and only giving away 11 unforced errors. The majority of the points for Lesia were won from Aravane's errors and double fault's. Aravane's future here in ART is in question, if she can get her game together, she will be top 10, if not, it is hard to say where we will find her in the rankings at the end of the year. Lesia is a well put together player but has to sort out her grumpy attitude if she wants to make things easier for herself and her accline in the rankings :yeah:

Petra Kvitova (CZE) def. Christina Mchale (USA)

3-6 6-2 6-3

After a very weak start from the Czech, one may have assumed that Christina Mchale, the young American, could pull the second upset of the tournament by eliminating one of the favourites for this competition. But Petra came back strongly, especially in the second set where Christina had no answer to Petra's ultra-algressive forehand which scored 19 winners alone just on that side !! Promising from Christina but she allows herself to get hammered around the court too easily. Petra started off rusty and cannot afford to keep on doing this if she wants a shot at the title.

Caroline Wozniacki (DEN) def. Andrea Petkovic (GER)

7-6(6) 6-4

Caroline gets off to a beautiful start here in Edgbaston with a solid display of tennis on her way of dispatching German talent Andrea Petkovic in straight sets. Caroline looked comfortable on the grass and dealt with Andrea's power perfectly, forcing the German into an array of errors. Andrea called for the trainer when she was 4-3 down with a break in the second but only managed one more game on her way to defeat. Caroline looks dangerous as the tournament progresses and it will be interesting to see how she handles the pressure in R2!!

Na Li (CHN) def. Maria Kirilenko (RUS)

6-3 4-1 RET

And Na Li makes it a trio of Chinese players into R2 with a win where she didn't have to work hard at all to come through. The match which lasted little over an hour looked to be quite exciting in it's former stages with both players playing their best tennis in parts. Na Li started to play out of her skin though in the second set and Maria's game looked to be falling apart. Maria decided enough was enough and as of yet we still don't know the reason why Maria quit but Na Li will advance to the second round where she will join her compatriots in the fight to get through to R3!!

Mandy Minella (LUX) def. Patty Schnyder (SUI)

6-4 7-5

Mandy Minella gets off to a brilliant start here in Birmingham with a straight forward 6-4 7-5 victory over Patty Schnyder of Switzerland. Patty's year has been full of up and downs and has never really found consistent form throughout the season. She will now go to Wimbledon in hope of putting together her game in time for the third grand slam of the year. Mandy played a high level of tennis today, making few errors and using her skillfully crafted volleys to finish off points. Encouraging signs from Minella!!

Venus Williams (USA) def. Anne Kremer (LUX)

6-4 4-6 7-6(12)*
CT Affected

Anne almost pulled off the win of her career by downing one of ART's biggest stars but could not convert on one of her five match points throughout the match. It was clear Venus was not at her best after her first match back for a while and struggled to come to terms with Anne's fitness and footwork around the court. Venus just couldnt put balls away and really had to dig deep in the third set to come away with the win on just her second match point. One has to question how far Venus can go in the tournament and what her form will be like for Wimbledon next week.

Alison Riske (USA) def. Flavia Pennetta (ITA)

7-6(6) 3-6 6-3

In another 3 set epic, another American came out with the win, going against the odds in dispatching experienced Italian Flavia Pennetta. Flavia had every opportunity to win today, having 2 set points in the first set but her lazy footwork around the court and inability to move forward and finish points allowed Alison to dominate at the back of the court. Alison got the breakthrough she needed in the third set also when she broke in the 8th game which finally sealed Flavia's fate. Alison makes it a good run here for the Americans so far, is this telling us something for Wimbledon?

Serena Williams (USA) def. Agnieszka Radwanska (POL)

6-4 6-2

In one of the most anticipated R1 matches of the tournament, fans and spectators were finally able to witness Serena Williams in action first hand. And what a display it was from the younger Williams sister. In a complete contrast of matches from her sister's, Serena dominated from the beginning and even Aga's clever and tricky play could not stop Serena from taking the first set. The second set was even easier for Williams and made Aga look lost on the court. Aga is a very talented played and if it was anybody else out here today, she may have come out win the win but all eyes are on Serena Williams as the tournament progresses!!

Marie-Eve Pelletier (CAN) def. Jelena Dokic (AUS)

3-6 6-3 7-6(7)

Today has been all about long matches and this match surely did not disappoint. Marie-Eve is the last competitor to reach R2 after dismissing Jelena Dokic from R1. Both players looked nervous and edgy throughout the match, both almost afraid of hitting out at their shots. Maybe this has something to do with the winner of this match going on to face the World number 1, Anna Chakvetadze in the next round. Jelena has promise but her mediocre tactics were not enough to get rid of the gutsy Canadian. Marie-Eve showed us why she should be in R2 in the second and third set with some classic examples of consistent and percentage tennis. Not the best match but Marie-Eve looked over-joyed to win her first match on grass in season 2!!

Kremer falls short, Venus pulls through! Serena makes it two!

http://img.skysports.com/08/07/800x600/Wimbledon-2008-Final-Preview-Serena-Venus-Wil_1003124.jpg

Birmingham, London--The Williams Sisters pulled through to the second round--in completely different manners yesterday--as Serena cruised passed her opponent in straight sets and hardly broke a sweat as she dominated in typical Serena fashion. Venus on the other hand was made to endure the thought of being eliminated so embarrassingly by a player from the tiny nation of Luxembourg no less. It came down to that silly tiebreaker that they play at Birmingham...no doubt if it was a no tiebreaker set in the third the match would have gone on forever. It was not to be as one of the ART's respectable players survived to fight another day.

Next up for Serena is the always dangerous--Victoria Azarenka who has a tendency to SHREIK the heck out of everyone...hopefully Serena can silence her. Venus is up against Australia's best hope in Samantha Stosur who has played some decent tennis this year--so Venus will have her hands full with that threat if she hopes to survive to the next round.

Serena Williams has arrived and everybody better watchout

http://www.tennisnow.com/Files/Teaser-Images/Serena-Williams-Eastbourne-2011.aspx

After all the long matches on court today, Serena Williams went on court and won in emphatic fashion over Agnieszka Radwanska. Serena showed no signs off nerves and pounced on the Radwanska serve, she converted on 3 of 4 break points in the match. Serena did not drop serve and serving a whooping 15 aces during the Match. she said after the match "I felt like Agnieszka was played great in the first set, but I just played the more important points better. In the second I thought she was getting to cute, hitiing multipe dropshots and I caught on early about that. Overall I would give myself a B-." Next round Serena will play 5th seed Victoria Azarenka

Hey guys :wavey:. I just wanted to let you all know that I decided to enter the tournament in Birmingham, and I am so excited to be playing Tennis on the tour again.

It's been a really tough period of time for me dealing with several injuries and struggling to find form but finally that was left in the past and I'm ready to play. And what better place to start than Birmingham.
This tournament has a really tough field this year and I'm looking forward to playing here.

It's been a favorite tournament of mine since playing juniors and I love coming back.

I will keep you guys updated, and you'll hear from me soon .

Melanie Oudin (USA) def. (9) Laura Robson (GBR)

6-4 3-6 6-3

Newcomer, Melanie Oudin is having an enjoyable time here in Birmingham after scoring a big win in her career in the form of ninth seed Laura Robson. Oudin was a perfect match for Laura's game today, counter punching Laura's aggressive shots coming out with winners from no where. Laura looked deeply upset after the match and refused to talk to any journalists about her performance. We are still waiting for an official confirmation of how she think she played. Melanie was loving tha attention after the match, saying 'I will be ART's number 1 some day.' Wow! We love the confidence.

Alison Riske (USA) def. (4) Alize Cornet (FRA)

6-4 5-0 RET

Even though the odds were stacked against her, Alison Riske makes it two Americans in the third round in just as many matches with an impressive performance against the 4th seed, Alize Cornet. In what has been a poor display from the seeds so far, Alize played some of her worst tennis in the second set until it became obvious she was being hampered by an ankle problem. The trainer was out at 3-0 down in the second set but Alison remained strong and allowed herself not to become distracted ultimately coming out with a win and a very impressive debut tournament for her so far.

(1) Anna Chakvetadze (RUS) def. Marie-Eve Pelletier (CAN)

7-5 3-6 6-4

Nobody quite expected Marie-Eve Pelletier to push ART's number 1 player as much as she did but the World number 1 remained strong and seemed unphased if anything when she booked her ticket through to round 3. It wasn't Anna's best performance this year but she did what needed to be done and to say it is her first match back for a while, it was quite an impressive display of tennis as well. Anna was thrilled with her victory afterwards and said afterwards 'Of course, all these people bought tickets to see me so I did not want to disappoint.' Got to love Miss Chakvetadze :yeah:

Anna's resting after her training.

Hello Anna. It's nice to see you again.

Hello everyone. It's nice to be back in tour.

You and other girls had few weeks without ART. Could you tell your fans, what were you doing during this break?

Nothing special, I have to admit. I did the same things as other girls at my age - shopping, sunbathing, swimming.

I hear that your match is going to start in few minutes. You play your first match against Eve Pelletier.

Yes, I heard that match is going to start soon too. I hope that after so long break I will be able to play at least in some decent level.

So, good luck and see you later.

Thank you, and stay with me during this match.

(13) Alisa Kleybanova (RUS) def. Mandy Minella (LUX)

3-6 7-6(2) 6-3

Mandy Minella could almost taste victory at 6-3 5-3 up in the second but just couldn't convert on any 2 of her match points, playing way too tentatively to threaten Alisa. The match was a nervy affair from both players but Alisa did the seeds proud fighting back to secure her place in the third round. Alisa looked so happy to be through but if she wants to be a contender she has to start better and quicker next time. Nevertheless it was still a confident performance in the end from Kleybanova :)

(8) Anne Keothavong (GBR) def. Eugenie Bouchard (CAN)

6-4 3-6 6-3

The Young Canadian has shown lots of promise in Birmingham but it just wasn't enough to put down newly crowned French open winner Anne Keothavong and her bid to dominate the ART tour. Anne looked a little shaky in the second set and allowed Eugenie to use clever baseline play which forced her into making more errors than usual. But Anne managed to get things together in the third hitting huge forehand winners and giving the British crowd something to cheer for after Laura's disappointing loss earlier on in the day. A solid performance in the end and now Anne will move on in to round 3 :yeah:

Anna fights back and waits for her opponent.

http://www.anna-chakvetadze.net/photos/albums/uploads/Wimbledon%202008/normal_Wimbledon_0829.jpg

It wasn't such successful return to ART for world number 1, Anna Chakvetadze, as we could expected. Anna was forced to play as best as she can to beat Marie-Eve Pelletier 7-5 3-6 6-4.

Chakvetadze, the No.1 seed here, had to spend almost two and a half hours on Centre Court to win with her Canadian opponent. But there is a reason why Anna is No.1 in world ranking, so even with disgusting performance in 2nd set she was able to return to match and won last set.

"It wasn't my best match. Marie-Eve played better than I suspected she can", Chakvetadze said. " But I'm happy I'm here. This tournament gives me a great chance to improve my tennis just before the one of the most important tournament during the season. All I need right now is a lot of practice with real opponents, not with sparing partners".

Anna was also asked about the Anabel's statement. "She's not the first player who wants to be number one. I wish her good luck, maybe some day she will become world leader :rolleyes".

3-6, 6-3, 6-1

Petra confirmed her comfort on the grass after two tricky sets. However coming into the Final Set against the promising Ukranian Petra seemed to calm down mentally and really strutt some of her skills on the grass. This lefty is a big threat for the rest of the tournament and Wimbledon.

Serena Williams (USA) Def. (5) Victoria Azarenka (BLR)

6-4, 6-2

It took little than an hour for the young ferocious Williams to make a statement for any woman no matter what their ranking wishing to face her out on court. Williams power and agression out on court today was simply scary  as she made the No.5 seed and former World No.2 Azarenka bow down to some unbelievable tennis. This woman is on a mission, and that is the Birmingham Title.

Aravane Rezai (FRA) and Anne Keothavong (GBR) Def. Yaroslava Shvedova (KAZ) and Alison Riske (USA)

6-4, 5-7, 6-4

Anne carries on playing excellent tennis from the French Open as her confidence on the grass courts grows, while French woman Aravane Rezai displayed some powerful baseline shots that allowed Anne to go in for the kill. The troubled American and confused Shvedova looked lost on court today and are going to have to produce better tactics if they want to take on some of the big names in the Doubles.

Henin and Li
http://www2.pictures.gi.zimbio.com/International+Women+Open+Day+Four+hq28rt0U8lvl.jpg
Justine Henin (BEL) and Na Li (CHN) Def. Svetlana Kuznetsova (RUS) and Sam Stosur (AUS)

6-3, 6-2

Justine and Li made the perfect doubles team as Henin layed some plum winners at the net, while Li sent a message to her doubles opponents on court as she fired 20 backhand winners down the court. The Chinese alll seem to be very comfortable on the grass this year and looks as if nothing is going to stop their dominance. Henin seems to be improving after every match she plays on the grass, and is looking ready for Wimbledon.

Wheres Anabel????

http://championingsara.files.wordpress.com/2010/09/condom_pile2.jpg?w=280&h=280

Today anabel was scheduled to play her match but it was cancelled after an unfortunate event with a condom machine. The machine in question malfunctioned crushing anabel under a pile of durex. She was rushed to hospital with servre rubber burns. The finger of suspicion has fallen on dominika cibulkova who is still gunning for anabel after previous fights between them. No body has come forward for the crime, but the authorities are 99% sure. Miss cibulkovas were abouts are currently unknown and if anyone has any information can they please come forward. Anabel hopes to play her match tomorrow and released a statement today.
'Durex have offered me a contract after today asking me to be the face of their new condom ad. I have accepted as I need some cash, plus I get free condoms all the time'.

Nadia's ready to play

http://www.coretennis.net/ct/1/image/Players/MJPage/WTA/P/Fiche/Petrova_Nadia_Fiche.jpg

According to Friday's OOP Nadia Petrova is going to start her match in next 2 hours. Nadia Petrova who is still number 2 in world ranking has a lot to prove. Nadia's last great tournaments were in USA, in Miami and Indian Wells.

And now just before her first match in Birmingham we have pleasure to talk with her.

Hello Nadia

Hello. Nice to see you again :) I missed you.

We missed you too. You play your first match today in night session. Do you feel comfortable with this?

I really want to play so I would prefer to play as soon as possible. But I understand the Birmingham's organizers, which want to have some stars at the end of the day.

Your first opponent is Heidi El Tabakh, who showed some nice tennis in her first match.

I've seen match's summary and yes, she was good.

You didn't see whole match?

I was in restaurant with friends, and we had more important things to do than watch her match.

 So, Good luck Nadia.

Bye.

Heather Watson (GBR) Def. (6) Ana Ivanovic (SRB)

6-4, 6-4

The talented and upcoming Brit Heather Watson played out of her skin on home soil to stun a shocked and World No.6 Ivanovic to advance through to the Final 16. Heather is certainly showing some promise here before Wimbledon, and if she can serve and play as aggressive as she did today, then I'm sure she will be causing some damage at Wimbledon.

Caroline Wozniacki (DEN) Def. (11) Rebeca Marino (CAN)

7-6 (6), 4-6, 6-3

It would all ride on who would take the opening set for the win, and after returning Wozniacki shocked experienced Marino in the tiebreak to take the first set 7-6, Marino was never the same. Though she played well in the second set, Wozniacki was never far behind and bullied Marino in the Final set retrieving that one extra ball to leak an unforced error of the Marino racquet. Caro takes her place in the last 16.

Heidi El Tabakh (CAN) Def. (2) Nadia Petrova (RUS)

5-7, 6-4, 6-3

Petrova looked to be cruising through to the final 16, but was lived short after the opening set as the Canadian played more aggressive moving Nadia from one end of the court to the other. After two physical sets Nadia looked out of it, and didn't even acknowledge to chase some balls down as Tabakh started to produce winner after winner. Can Nadia play any better in the Doubles?

Jie Zheng (CHN) Def. (15) Vera Zvonareva (RUS)

6-4, 6-3

In the final Round 2 match of the day, Zheng made little work of Vera. The Chinese play was brutal today as the Russian had no answers or options to answer against the Chinese Bulldogs play. Vera looked disappointed, but the Chinese are rolling on the grass, while producing winners for fun. Who is going to step up to the challenge of upping their game when the time is needed?

Some nice results here today in Birmingham! :yeah:

There are some real contenders for the Birmingham title before Wimbledon, and I am sure that who ever wins here will be the clear favourite for Wimbledon :D

The final 6 round 1 Doubles matches will be coming up soon :D

The Aussie and Czech had everything all planned out today against the Serbs. Kvitova's serve was devastating while Jarmila's defence was something little more than extrodinary. Bad match for the Serbs

Christina McHale (USA) and Agneiska Radwanska (POL) Def. Jie Zheng (CHN) and Shuai Peng (CHN)

6-3, 0-6, 6-3

The French Open Champions from China were dethroned from their winning streak and had not been beaten since their debut at the French Open until today. The American and Pole put presure on the Chinese from the start. The Chinese played the tennis that made them win the French Open losing no games. But in the Final Set both Chinese seem to go back to defensive play as Aga and McHale became more aggressive and took greater risks. Is the Chinese mojo fading?

Andrea Petkovic (GER) and Sabine Lisicki (GER) Def. (1) Laura Robson (GBR) and Heather Watson (GBR)

2-6, 6-4, 6-3

Laura and Heather were beaten to it today by a formiddable force and play in the German pair. Andrea and Sabine proved to have more resiliance and that extra spark today to pull through against the Brits. Laura has had some impressive Doubles victories this year,a and I am sure that herself and Heather will come bouncing back at Wimbledon. Sabine and Andrea really had chemistry out on court today together.

Eugenie Bouchard (CAN) and Caroline Wozniacki (DEN) Def. Vania King (USA) and Melanie Oudin (USA)

1-6, 6-3, 7-5

The Americans were in the front seat losing only one game in the opening set, bit were forced to the back as Wozniacki and young Canadian Bouchard who has got many talking changed their game plan in the second set to make it even stevens. However the final set was very much a battle up to 5-5, as Melanie Oudin served 3 Double Faults in a row for Wozniacki and Bouchard to pounce on the break. Caro served confidently in the final game 6-5 up, marching through to the Quarters.

Venus Williams and Serena Williams (USA) Def. Victoria Azarenka (BLR) and Lesia Tsurenko (UKR)

6-4, 6-2

Only one word can describe the Williams after todays play! DOMINANT! They didn't give Azarenka or Tsurenko a look in, as the match finished in enough time before darkness fell over Birmingham. The William sisters usually play better and better as the week goes on. I would hate to know what level they will be at come the end of the week, if they carry on playing as they did today. Vee looks happy to be reuinted with lil sis Ree. I am looking forward to seeing what history they can create on the ART Tour together.

6-2, 2-6, 6-2

Masha and JJ are back taking out the No.2 seeds in what ended the day and evening with a super three set epic. JJ and Masha played with loads of confidence in the opening set, as Chakvetadze and Petrova struggled to find any rhythm. The second set was full of drama but it was the Russians who came up with the big baseline shots and down the line winners. Masha and JJ fought back in the final set 2-0 down to make the match even at 2-2. After this Chakvetadze and Petrova played poorly and won no more games, as Masha and JJ used the energy from the crowd to close off one of their best performances. The Doubles Quarter-Final line up is now complete! :yeah:

Serena Williams In Monstorus Form

http://www.yourgossipfix.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/Venus-Williams-Serena.jpg

Yesterday Serena Williams won 6-4,6-2 against 5th seed Victoria Azarenka. She made a statement after the match 'I played great, I just felt awesome out there and so glad to be on the tour.' Miss Williams served a blistering 12 aces and hit 14 winners. She forced Azarenka to 26 unforced errors to the match. Also during today's night session, Azarenka and Williams met once again, now in doubles. Williams partnering with her big sister Venus and Azarenka teamed with Lesia Tsurenko. The Williams sisters won in blistering fashion once again, winning 6-4,6-2. Serena said after the match 'I just tried to encourage Venus because she wasn't the happiest person in the world after her singles loss, but other than that we really played great.'

In the 3rd round Serena Williams plays 15th seed Jie Zheng. "From what Venus has told me, she is very dangerous player and get hit winners on anybody part of the court. On this tour there is so much depth, anybody can beat anybody, and just you need to be on every day. I felt like I can do that and Just exicted about playing"

The French Open Champion carries on her winning streak, just pipping the American to it, in a final set tiebreak. Anne's fighting spirit, as well as a striking forehand that helped her achieve the win at the French was a massive factor in the tiebreak.

5-7 7-6(6) 7-5

This tournament continues to amaze after one of the best matches in the competition which lasted for almost 4 hours came to an end after Jie played some amazing tennis to oust America's new hope. Congrats Jie :yeah: Serena

And a straight forward win on the outside courts for Na Li means we will see 2 Chinese players in the quarter finals at Birmingham. Na was just too good today but encouraging signs from the Young Dane player. Nice match :yeah:

Petra Kvitova (CZE) Def. Shuai Peng (CHN)

7-6 (6), 6-4

The promising Chinese woman put up her best tennis against the Czech, but proved too strong for the two handed player. Petra's serves were formiddable today as Peng was unable to break any of Petra's service games. Peng who always seems to dominate in the long rallies against her opponents struggled with this today against Petra and made a number of unforced errors, while Petra took the short balls off Peng's racquet for the taking. Some convincing tennis off Petra so far this week.

Maria Sharapova (RUS) Def. (1) Anna Chakvetadze (RUS)

6-3, 3-6, 6-3

In a tough match out on Centre Court, the World No.1 was sent packing with a monstrous Sharapova out on court. Sharapova's movement as well as creative shot making was another level today, and though the World No.1 defended well, it wasn't enough as Maria found ways to sneak winners and wrong foot her former country woman a number of times to get the job done. This is one of Sharapova's biggest wins to date, and will now look on ahead to the Quarter-Finals.

Serena Williams at BFF'S Wedding

http://www.livetennisguide.com/wp-content/uploads/Serena-Williams-attend-Kim-Kardashian-Wedding-Ceremony-300x225.jpg

During 4 days of rain at Birmingham, Serena Williams jetsetted over to best freind Kim Kardashian weeding. "I told her that I couldn't make it because I am playing in Birmingham." "I suprised her at the reception ceremony, she was in total shock, I am so proud of her." "Can't wait until I have my wedding."Serena still has to play doubles in birmingham. Just hope the rain will stop

Jie Zheng (CHN) Def. Na Li (CHN)

6-3, 7-6 (6)

Both Chinese bull dogs went for it in the Quarter-Finals of Birmingham to establish who was the top Chinese woman, but it was Zheng with her pure guts and determination today that got her past the hard hitting Li! Some nice shots and striking forehand winners!

Heidi El Tabakh (CAN) Def. Heather Watson (GBR)

3-6, 6-3, 6-3

Heather's dream of glory in one of her home tournaments ended as the Canadian pounced on Watson after a successful opening set. The Canadian mixed up her game and became more aggressive as the match went on, going for more winning shots and opportunities. Heather had her chances in the final set but looked a little sluggish after what has been a marathon week for her as well as being in the Doubles. Hev looks on to Wimbledon as Tabakh goes through to the Semi's.

Petra Kvitova (CZE) Def. (10) Sam Stosur (AUS)

7-6 (5), 6-3

Petra was absolutely lethal on the grass in her Quarter-Final encounter with Stosur. Stosur played a good game in the opening set, but was outclassed by the leftys brutal forehand that slid from corner to corner, in a winning fashion. Sam got tight in the second set and played her worst set of the whole tournament, as Kvitova gained in confidence and control of her game. Nice work Petra and bad luck Sam

Maria Sharapova (RUS) Def. (8) Anne Keothavong (GBR)

6-4, 4-6, 6-4

Anne Keothavong was on a 10 match winning streak since winning the French Open, but ws made to bow down today to the mighty Sharapova. Maria played incredibly well in the opening set, but seemed to lose that spark and flair to her game in the second set. She came back however in the final set in a tough battle against the French Open Champ, cruising after 4-4 to a semi-final spot. Nice work Masha, and bad luck Anne. But excellent preparation for Wimbledon!

Maria Sharapova (RUS) and Jelena Jankovic (SRB) Def. Eugenie Bouchard (CAN) and Caroline Wozniacki (DEN)

6-1, 2-6, 6-4

The dream team of Maria and Jelena are back! They played tremendous tennis in the opener, only to lose some concentration in the second set. The Final set was a great effort from the Canadian and Dane, but not enough as Maria and Jelena found a way to win!

Petra Kvitova (CZE) and Jarmila Gajdosova (AUS) Def. Aravane Rezai (FRA) and Anne Keothavong (GBR)

4-6, 6-3, 6-3

Kvitova and Gajdosova have been playing well all week and today was no exception. Aggressive groundstrokes from both ladies was the key to their success today as Rezai and Keothavong could not cope with the pace of the ball at times hit from the other pair. Rezai made a huge number of unforced errors on the forehand today!

Serena Williams (USA) and Venus Williams (USA) Def. Andrea Petkovic (GER) and Sabine Lisicki (GER)

6-1, 6-4

The Williams sisters just keep getting better and better, as Andrea and Sabine had little less than 60 minutes out on court with the Williams. Vee was on top of her game at the net while Ree had too much firepower today with a number of winners that were brutal!

A big congratulations to the William sisters, Petra/Jarmila, Christina/Aga and Masha/JJ for advancing through to the Semi-Finals! The Williams are getting better and better, while Masha and JJ are starting to pose a threat on the Doubles tour again! Christina and Aga are making a formiddable doubles team at the moment and I hope the partnership will continue! Jarmila and Petra also make quite the tag team! Some really nice play here today! Excited for the Semi-Finals! :)

The Semi-Finals along with the Finals will be posted tomorrow! :)

I know

I should have made Petra's points differently :sobbing:

Maybe Jarka can make a miracle

It's going to be close, my gut says it comes down to whoever can win that Second Set.
