that performance was just awful :( she didnt wanna be out there in those conditions :(

I knew it, but at least she should try to handle it with more patience. She was my fav to win the title in Berlin. A QF result is not bad at all, I hope she bounces back next week in Italy. Regarding Jenn, I am sure she won't win the title.

Yeah her play was so bad..I don't know what happened with her. No faith no belivness, no winners. She like didn't care what will happens, wil lshe lose or will she win. She was just hitting this ball and making tons of errors. No match rhythm it seems. She needs more matches and time to build up her form.

Nastya won one match in Berlin. And only won 5 games against Jennifer. If Nastya wants to do well on red clay, she is going to have to be patient and play steady.
If she doesn't, she'll be out early at Roland Garros again this year.
Nastya/Vera beat Black/Huber in the quarters 6-1, 6-0.

Great win in doubles. Hope they can really make good result, title would be awesome for them, but mainly just have fun nastya & Vera :)

Nastya has to be patient GL but what if she even is when she is just making easy errors and it was not because of being not patient, she didn't rush and didn't want to just hit a winner no matter what. Hewr shots just weren't working properly, like they always work for her. She has just came back and i hope it's the case of time. Red clay is tough surface but Nastya can do well if she on;y get needed rhythm

goldenlox
May 7th, 2004, 08:16 PM
I didn't see the match. But I saw Nastya beat Capriati 6-2, 6-2 in Doha. And this is almost a total reversal.
A top 5 player shouldn't lose 6-3, 6-2. Nastya has to adjust to the conditions.

cool_olga
May 7th, 2004, 09:00 PM
Yeah, Doha win was great. but you have to remember that it was before injury and in Doha Nastya feels great and plays great, it's her tourny. And Capriati was in really poor form there, lost even in Dubai earlier. I don't say that win was not great beacuse Nastya probably played incredible and beautiful tenn ithere. But today it was different. Nastya was after injury and jennifer was in pretty good form and we can kinda say that Berlin is rather Jen's tourny, she was in semis 6 times.
I don't want to excuse Nastya, just saud it wasn't so much patience thing but generally easy mistakes.

goldenlox
May 7th, 2004, 09:08 PM
Nastya played two matches before Warsaw. When she lost 3-6, 3-6 in Fed Cup, then she's coming back from an injury. This is two weeks later.
This is a bad sign. It's possible Nastya is going to play like this all spring.
Capriati is not playing well. Sharapova just missed beating her yesterday.

cool_olga
May 7th, 2004, 09:28 PM
Yeah, that lost in Moscow wasn't good, thought it's accident...Well thi match was her second on clay, I hope she will be better in Rome. Capriati wasn't playing so great but she wanted to fight, opposite to nastya. You know, you could see in her that she really want this win and will be fighting for every point. Nastya was just playing so bad and didn't want to change anything, like didn't give all her in this match. She lacked the fightness, Jen had it. Hope she will have better motivation and form in Rome, really hope because Roland Garros close

goldenlox
May 7th, 2004, 09:34 PM
I think that has always been Nastya's problem on clay. Her thinking. Why give up today?
Nastya has to accept that red clay means long, difficult matches. It's a mental thing.
She doesn't fight on clay, she gives up.

goldenlox
May 8th, 2004, 02:57 PM
In Rome, Nastya is the #3 seed and has a bye -

Zvonareva [8] vs bye
Safina vs Santangelo [WC]
Bovina vs Pisnik
Barna vs Schnyder [11]

Schiavone [14] vs Pratt
Qualifer vs Raymond
Loit vs Likhovtseva

cool_olga
May 8th, 2004, 05:42 PM
Schiavone can be tough on clay. She beat Mauresmo week ago. That's so pity, Nastya maybe will have to play her two best Russian freinds Lena first and then Vera. A lot of Russians in this part, Safina, Bovina...
Well, Nastya has to be beter motivated for Rome matches and go deep in a draw on clay, she must get some confidence before Roland Garros
Good luck !!!

Loit has been playing well on clay. Nastya can lose that match.

cool_olga

I hope no. I mean come on, Nastya is top 5 player..Ranking doesn't play and Loit is toug opponent but I hope that Nastya will pass second round  Loit is sometimes unexpectable, cab play suprisingly well bur she still isn't at the level Nastya is. If Ana only is well motivated she will win this match. Maybe she will play Lena, who knows

TheBoiledEgg

Nastya has an awkward draw
but Roma courts should be fast but its been awful weather there with lots of rain so they are alot slower than normal which wont be good.

good luck Nastya :)

goldenlox
May 8th, 2004, 06:01 PM
Loit is having a great spring, she won two titles. Nastya has lost 3 of 5, and in the 3 losses, she has only won 13 games in 6 sets.

Nastya/Vera lost in the semis 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. They were broken at least 3 times in the third set.

~|Naomi|~
May 9th, 2004, 04:09 AM
I agree with goldenlox Loit is going to be tough, she is a tricky player at the best of times and has taking sets off and pushed many top players and is playing well on clay with a couple of titles so is going to be confident and not fearful of Anastasia. Schiavone is going to be tough to if Anastasia plays her.

Also as TBE said it has been raining a lot in Rome and that is going to slow down the traditionally 'faster' Rome courts. They aren't going to be as fast as last year where Anastasia made the semis.

Anastasia can do well but will have to play very good to do so.

cool_olga
May 9th, 2004, 10:49 AM
There was raining almost everywhere this week, Warsaw, Berlin, Rome, that's not good courts will be so slow for Nastya. But wonder why on WTA profile they say that clay is her fev surface then :P
I'm starting to be afraid of Loit now..But I beliv in Nastya, maybe she will get some conclusions after Berlin and will be more motivated and ready for fight

Momo is my most hated and liked opponent for Nastya. I want her to beat her. Even if it's just an exhibition.

May 9th, 2004, 12:59 PM
Well it ended while 6-5 for Nastya because of the rain. Pity because maybe she had a chance to win this set. i have to say that Nastya was playing really bad like in quarterfinal. Too many errors even if it was exhibition. I am worried about next tournies a bit. It was 5-2 for Amelie when Nastya took the advantage and somehow made the score 6-5. Mauresmo was maming many errors and Nastya less that time. Well, it wasn't so good match and tennis but i stillenjoyed it because Nastya was smiling a lot :) While she made score 5-5 she was almost laughing out there, was good to see her but hope for better play in Rome.
There will be no Henin, no Clijsters, no Serena, no Venus. Just Mayresmo so I wish Nastya will play well there so she can really make a good result

Nastya will play Eastbourne -

Myskina has moved quietly through the rankings and now regularly competes for honours at the sharp end of tournaments.

She has already won seven titles in her career and was an Eastbourne finalist two years ago. At Wimbledon, her best performance came last year when she reached the fourth round.

"Eastbourne is really good preparation for Wimbledon and I love the city," Myskina said.

"When it is sunny it is unbelievably beautiful. I like the fish and chips and the ice cream. The people are really nice, they love tennis and I feel they really support me there."

Clay really isn't Nastya's best...I was quite sure she will win this, so pity.

I think she's just playing poorly. Capriati got 2 games from Mauresmo. But Capriati buried Nastya.

cool_olga
May 12th, 2004, 05:33 PM
Yeah but Capriati's attitude for thi match and Mauresmo match was completely different. With Nastya she was fighting for every ball and she knew she can win this and was confident. Against mauresmo at the beginning she was playing great. But when Amelie got break I think she just gave up this match because wa already satisfied with what she did and saw Momo is in great shape. She hould have go out in a match with Masha, she gained much confidence and saw that she is better. so I think you can't compare these two matches like that.
But one fact is clear, as you said, Nastya is playing poorly. I'm not happy saying this...

goldenlox
May 12th, 2004, 05:36 PM
Nastya came back for Fed Cup, then Berlin and Rome. She is not playing well. I see no reason to think she will win matches in Paris. She may not win matches on grass.
Unless she plays much better tennis.

cool_olga
May 12th, 2004, 05:42 PM
Grass is still long way away. I hope Nastya can win at leat one or two matches in Paris. Last year she wasn't doing that well on clay as well and then Wimbledon was okay.

goldenlox
May 12th, 2004, 05:48 PM

Last year she wasn't that high seed and still she lost in second round to Mandula. I wonder why she doesn't play well on clay. She has everything that would be needed on this surface, great speed. She's in a whole now

goldenlox
May 12th, 2004, 06:12 PM

Mandula is a very good clay court player, I player Nastya should beat but still it isn't like she lost to someone bad there. Mandula has been QF in Paris.

Despite playing poorly coming in I expected Nastya to beat Likhovtseva and then lose to Schiavone. I'm with Goldenlox I don't expect much in Paris, and am hoping for a good draw. I just hope Nastya doesn't lose too much confidence on the clay and doesn't go into the grass season short of confidence.

I don't understand why Nastya stayed in Berlin after losing in singles and doubles.
So she plays a meaningless exhibition instead of going to Rome, to prepare for a Tier I.
And she loses her first match in Rome.

Jane
May 15th, 2004, 01:33 PM
Nastya is returning from injury and playing on her worst surface. I think she will be fine once grass season starts. I am not expecting much from her at RG: I think the 2nd round is her best result there. I would not be surprised if she was well compensated for the Berlin exhibition.

goldenlox
May 15th, 2004, 01:45 PM
The Berlin exhibition would be fine, if Nastya wasn't playing a Tier I in Rome the next week.
Imagine if Vera loses in Vienna, but she stays and plays an exhibition on Sunday. And then loses her first match in Paris.
You have to treat the tournament as more important than the exhibition.

cool_olga
May 15th, 2004, 03:09 PM
Yeas but it just shows that Nastya is really nice person and doesn't just care about results and money but also tennis fans. If she refused to play this exhibition, Berlin crowd would have nothing to watch this day, best day of finals. I admire Nastya for that, she cares about other things. And would that few hours made such a big difference?
I guess she wanted to go to Rome Monday morning, she went in the afternoon, it's not so big difference.

goldenlox
May 15th, 2004, 03:19 PM
I don't know what it shows about Nastya. I know she lost to Lena L. in Rome.
And Nastya withdrew from Warsaw before Key Biscayne. 5 weeks before the tournament. And she played Fed Cup before Warsaw.
I don't understand why Nastya doesn't treat red clay tournaments as being meaningful.
Maybe Nastya should just skip all the clay tournaments in 2005. She's only won one match since Indian Wells this year.

cool_olga
May 15th, 2004, 07:52 PM
No, I mean, I want Nastya do well, I really do. But it's not just her results she has the reason I like her so much. I don't know if it was good or bad to stay few more hours in Berlin but I think that her loss in Rome is not so much connected with the fact she flew there few hours later. It's something else I think.
I don't really know what's that. Why she plays so bad on clay, why she withdrew from Warsaw. But even on carpet she shouldn't have lost to Molik. But in the past she had some good results on clay. I have no idea why is it like that now  Just hope she will play like she can on grass

goldenlox
May 15th, 2004, 08:04 PM

It is a terrible draw, Molik is one of the few unseeded opponents seeds wouldn't want to draw, and then think of Fed Cup and Molik pushing Kuznetsova to 3 in Rome and her good run this week in Vienna and Nastya:sad:

Anastasia can win this match, she has to believe she can do it and not go in with the red clay mentality she seemed to have so far this year. If she really puts her heart into it, she can win it. Serving is going to be a big key for the match.

I think Strycova will be tougher she beat Callens in two easy sets and she isn't going to give Anastasia as many UE as Molik did, also Myskina struggled with her at hopman so Strycova is going to go in confident.

Both Nastya and KUznetsova have to get there first. I am confident Nastya will as it seems the opponents are getting easier as the tournament goes on:o but after Petrova's surprise loss today I'm not sure of anything in this tournament except the bottom half has far more depth than the top. I wouldn't rule Casanova out of beating Kuznetsova, Casanova hits the ball incredibly hard if she is on she will make things very tough for Kuznetsova.

I wish a grand slam draw would open up for Nastya like it has for Maria in the top quarter and did for Schnyder and Zuluaga at AO this year. IF Maria makes the semis she won't have had to beat a top 10 player, I just wish Natya would get a good draw like that, each time (apart from the last few FO's) she has gone down to a top player, and every QF she has played has been against a higher seed:mad: Why doesn't Nastya get so lucky with the draws:mad:

Nastya is playing very smart. She's taking the pace off, and keeping the ball in play. Venus is overhitting.

That last game was about as exciting a sports moment as I have ever seen.

I couldn't understand why Nastya did not play her steady, cover-the-court, style of play on clay.
I looked at her results, and I couldn't understand it.
I finally got to see Nastya play on clay today. She played perfect red clay tennis.
Nastya can win this tournament.

First semifinal here in Paris who would expect that!!! Nastya is the queen!!!
Weather conditions for sure helped her, heavy balls, wet court made the game slower what didn't suit Venus. Williams was making many errors and Nastya was playing very smartly, she wasn't going for extremely risky winners but tried to keep the ball in. It was Nastya that we walways like to see, focused and regular. She didn't make many unforced errors and it paid of.

Nastya so happy for u !!! Congratz!! :bounce: :D :worship: :hearts:

Jen was bit injured I guess. Nasty plays great now, she is so consistent and regular. She returns everything. You can't finish her taht easy, her speed now works perfectly. This is clay court tennis. Nastya doesn't play so fast like on hard courts but wants to keep the ball in, taht is really good way. She has a chance with everybody now

It's not just about money, I think for player to win a Grand Slam is something incredible, then you know that you're a champion. They have a lot of money, of course it's great for her to have $100,000 but I think when she's out there on the court it's not about money at all, it's about a victory and you tennis satisfaction. Nastya thinks like that, she wants to fight and she has a good chance, she caused one big upset she can do another, Capriati shoul be afraid of her and Nastya has nothing to lose.

I always thought Nastya's steady baseline game, and great court coverage, would be effective on clay.
Here's today's interview -

Q. How does that rank for you in your career as a victory?

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: I feel pretty good right now. I never beat Venus before, and I think it was a good match. I really fought, and I really, really want to win today.

Q. What was different in this match, compared to the other two that you've played against her?

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: I think Venus not really right now in her best level, and I knew that I can beat her. And the game was like -- usually Venus like to make winners. Today was like more unforced errors.

And I just tried to keep the ball in play today.

Q. In the last game she had three breakpoints. Did you think she would keep committing the errors, or did you think to yourself, "Maybe I'll have to start hitting winners now because she may play better"?

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: I really couldn't think at that point because I was so nervous. I was just thinking about the rain, that the rain could start, and then they can delay our match. And I didn't really want to do that. I just was thinking to win this game, no matter what.

Q. And you moved her. She obviously did not play her best tennis today, but you moved her very well and were strong in the back-court rallies. So you believed in that part of your game?

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: Yeah, that was one of the part of strategy, to move her around because she had injured before and she's not moving well. And just couple more things, her forehand right now not really good. So it was really using that.

Q. Seemed like down the stretch in some of the big rallies you kept going to her backhand. Last few points in particular.

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: I was trying to open the corner for the forehand, but then she was missing also the backhand today, maybe because she was nervous as well.

But today, like I said, it was not her best tennis. I used this today.

Q. Do you think the mystique, the atmosphere around the Williams sisters, that they were so strong, so great, is over among the players?

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: Oh, definitely, right now, yes, because they just came back. They lost a lot of months. You know, the players kept practicing. I mean, now of course everybody believe at least that they can fight with them, you know. It's something that we can -- I mean, we can do it right now.

Q. So this is the first time you've beaten a Grand Slam champion in a quarterfinal. So how happy are you that you're able to make this mental breakthrough and really show your game?

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: I'm really, really happy. But, you know, it's not end of the tournament so I have to keep going. I know the next match is gonna be really tough because Jennifer is great player and I know how much she wants to win right now. She beat Serena. That shows as well that she's really good. I just have to keep calm.

Q. Coming into this Roland Garros, this was the Grand Slam where you were the worst.

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: Yeah. My dream was to win the first round here (smiling).

Q. So what's been the difference for you now? You come in, this is your worst Grand Slam, now you're in the semifinals, your best performance.

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: Well, I'm not gonna say that it's my favorite right now, but at least I start liking Paris right now and I still -- I will be back for sure.

Q. How much does your experience in Australia, when you had a missed opportunity there and you had some tough moments, how much of that affects your ability to handle this kind of match today, do you think?

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: None. I don't think -- in Australia, it was Kim, if you mean that. It was different story. I lost Kim just because I was kind of not ready to win the match.

And today I was really ready to win, and I know that I can do it. And I just was fighting, fighting for every point.

Q. And keeping your composure as well?

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: Yeah, definitely.

Q. You worked on that the last couple months some more?

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: I work on everything right now, because if you want to improve... I don't just want to be No. 5 and that's it, I want to move forward, I want to show that I can be better than that. Of course, I work.

Q. So you're sounding like that you know you're not done here. If you want to prove you're better than just No. 5, you have to go on. Do you have belief in yourself that maybe you can beat Jennifer in the semifinals, then even beyond that, beating someone as good as Mauresmo in the final?

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: I do believe that I can beat Jennifer. I do believe that I can play better than today even. But, you know, you never know because Jennifer also believe that she can win. And just gonna be tough game for both of us. I mean, who is gonna be stronger mentally, I think that person gonna win.

Q. You guys, all the women, work very hard and play hard and battle. How important is it for women's tennis -- I mean, the Williamses have been gone -- just to show you can't sort of play part-time, you have to come in and battle like you all do and if you don't, you're not going to be at the top of your game?

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: I mean, we have Kim, Justine, we have so many other good players with who we have to fight. Young players also coming, like Maria. Every girls are really tough right now. I don't think Venus or Serena done; they just not in the best level right now. But they will be back for sure. I don't think they like to lose.

Just, you know, you have to practice hard and first you have to believe that you can do whatever you can do, you can beat best players.

Q. Do you think it would be a mistake for people to read this today and say, "The Williams, their mystique is gone," do you think they'll take this as a wakeup call and come roaring right back?

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: Like I said, I don't think they done. They gonna be back. I mean, they were the best; they can be the best again. It's gonna be little bit harder for them because I think right now more players start believe that they can beat them.

Q. What would be the perfect ending of this tournament - to be in the final against Dementieva?

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: The perfect is gonna be to go home with the trophy, the perfect one, but that's it (smiling).

But Amelie, I don't know, it's 4-all in the first set. Tough game for both of them. I know that a lot of people wants Amelie to be in the final and to win. But for her, it's gonna be really tough right now.

Q. You were injured in March, your foot, I think. How long did you stay at home without being able to play tennis, and when did you start again? Do you think that being fresh coming to the French is a good advantage for you?

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: That was not advantage at all because I lost the time because of the injury, and I think I lost the atmosphere of the tournaments. I stayed at home like one months. It was tough because other people was playing. And at the beginning when I came back, was really hard. I was losing first round couple tournaments.

So for me, of course it was good preparation for French Open, but I was really upset with losing the weeks before.

Q. Could you remind us what happened exactly? I think it was in Miami. Something fell on your foot?

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: Something with my toes and the foot. They said that it's stress fracture, but it was something else. I'm not really sure.

Q. Where is home for you?

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: Moscow.

I think Nastya has surprised us all with her Paris performance...

Venus definitely sucked, and made lots of errors... but Nastya played her game, and didn't give Venus the opportunity to sneak back in the match.

It feels weird saying that Nastya is the highest seed left in a Grand Slam!

She has a real chance vs. Jen, as well... she's not playing that great.

Kim is different from Vee.Kim loves to play long points. When she plays her top form,She hardly hits any unforced errors.I knew Nat has done that but She beat Kim in 2000 and 2002.Kim hasn't improved yet.And in 2003 Kim lost in Leipzig 5-7 4-4 ret .All of matches that Kim won were in two sets.

But I just wonder how can she play when the rival doesn't make a lot of mistake like Linzi and Kim.I've seen Nastya's match against Denisa,Sveta and Vee and I am not impressived by the way she play. She didn't do anything. Her rivals gave her a lot of free points.

When you say didn't do anything, that's how you win on wet red clay. You play steady, and construct points.
That's the way to win. You don't try to bang winners from behind the baseline. You play safe, until you get a short ball.

I disagree... you can't just play defensively.

Lena D. looked great today, and that was because she took the initiative... but didn't go for crazy winners.

It's a fine line.

It also helps if your opponent plays awful tennis.

Nastya has to be aware that the clay might play faster on Thursday. She has to be ready for a muddy, slow, clay. And also be ready for a drying out, faster clay.
Either way, use your speed, and your groundstrokes. The skills Nastya showed against Venus, she can use to play well against Capriati.

cool_olga
Jun 2nd, 2004, 05:47 PM
I don't know why you talk about Kim all the time TartarVicario. Kim is not here and Australian Open is a past and completely different story, we are here now at Roland Garros and Nastya has a great chance in this tournament.

I think both styles of game can be good on clay. You can either play defense tennis and drive your opponent nuts with returning every ball, Nastya did that with Venus, of course Venus was making many errors but that's the point- Nastya didn't make them earlier although she could, that's why she won. As she said she also used Venus' bad day.
The second way is Lena's tennis now, Very agressive and attacking. She was like crazy out there with Mauresmo, I really liked her attitude for this match. She was really going for it.
Nastya can play very fast balls we all know that but her tactic here was to keep the ball in, so far it was enough, who knows what she will try tomorrow? She can mix it, play again defense but also hitting some winners, she can do it.
Would be great to see more defensive Nastya and attacking Lena in final, that would be very interesting match.

And why do you criticize Jenny so much TartarVicario? She wasn't playing that bad. Remember taht it's not easy to play that kind of match when rain stops it in the moment you start to be really warmed up, you go off court then on court and it starts again. Maybe it wasn't impressive tennis but she won and that'simportant, she was better that Serena and played smartly anyways. But I think not so good that Nastya is underdog here.

goldenlox
Jun 2nd, 2004, 05:51 PM
Nastya played a very smart match against Venus. She forced Venus to either out rally her, or go for winners.
Venus couldn't do it. But the clay might play faster tomorrow. Nastya has to be ready for a fast surface, or a slow one.
And Capriati is good. It will take a big effort to beat her.

Derek.
Jun 2nd, 2004, 07:02 PM
Yep, Nastya played smart tennis. :D Made Venus hit a ton of balls and just waited for Venus to make th ue and of course Venus did. :p Hope she can beat Capriati tomorrow! Good luck Nastya! :woohoo:
