and i want a repeat of Moscow 2003 final, Nastya

I was on this match, and Momo just have nothing to beat Myskina on those day

I want a repeat

I want Momo's blood tomorrow

I feel it

I agree. Nastya was on a hot streak back then too... Hope she has hit another one. This is her 6th time to a QF at a GS... Only once has she passed that round, and we all know what happened then! :worship:

Good luck vs Momo!

I'm pleased with a QF, but when she looks back retrospectively she will probably wish she had played most of her QF matches differently. Let's hope this is one for her to remember.

Mysterious Myskina continues on her upward trend

Les Roopanarine
Tuesday July 4, 2006

When Anastasia Myskina faces Amelie Mauresmo for a place in the Wimbledon semi-finals this afternoon, prepare for the unexpected. One moment she will be striking the ball with the authoritative air of a Russian tsarina, the next she will be all droopy-shouldered despair. Winners will be greeted with contemptuous familiarity, mistakes with hands-on-hips disdain.
But while the eleventh-ranked Muscovite is her own harshest critic, it is an approach that has reaped dividends. Two years ago Myskina scolded and chastised her way to the French Open title, reaching number two in the world, and although she has since suffered setbacks, the signs are that she is close to recapturing her best form.

Having arrived in SW19 off the back of an impressive week's work at Eastbourne, where she beat sixth-ranked compatriot Svetlana Kuznetsova en route to losing a closely-contested final against Justine Henin-Hardenne, Myskina's progress to the last eight has been impressive. She has yet to concede a set.
Does Myskina feel that she is hard on herself? The suggestion elicits a stern response. "I try to be," she says, "because everybody else is nice to me." Momentarily struck by the absurdity of this self-flagellating philosophy, she dissolves into laughter. "It's just the way I am. If I win I'm always really happy afterwards. I can celebrate then."

Typical Myskina: scowls followed by smiles, all contrasts and contradictions; the proverbial riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma.

Not that she sees herself that way. "I'm not really mysterious," Myskina insists, "I just try to be nice, friendly and a good player." She is all three, but her defensive stance simply intensifies the closed-book aura that surrounds her.

Her contradictory nature is highlighted by her record at Roland Garros. While her first four visits to Paris saw her fail to advance beyond the second round, at the fifth attempt she went all the way, becoming the first Russian woman in history to win a Grand Slam singles title. Twelve months later she counterbalanced that achievement by becoming the first defending champion to lose in the first round.

The lingering pain of that defeat is assuaged by the memory of what went before. "Winning the French changed my life," she says. "I became a more recognised person in Russia, and I became more professional. You realise it's a different life - people take you seriously, you get a lot more respect from the players, from the coaches and the crowd."

And a lot more ranking points. In September of that year Myskina reached a career high of number two in the world, and as 2005 began she had her sights set firmly on the top spot. But a recurring shoulder injury and the devastating news that her mother, Galina, had been diagnosed with cancer prompted a downward spiral.

"It was a lot of pressure and I couldn't handle it," says Myskina, who admits that her travails have forced her to change the net posts when it comes to setting targets: "I want to be in the top 8 this year, that's my goal."

Qualification for the season-ending WTA Tour Championships, where the top eight players compete for bragging rights, looks an increasingly realistic target. Buoyed by the recent addition of compatriot Larissa Savchenko to her coaching set-up, she has reached two finals in as many months and enjoyed a good run in Paris, making the fourth round before losing to Henin-Hardenne.

It is no accident that this resurgence has coincided with the return to health of Galina, who accompanied her daughter to Eastbourne and is at Wimbledon with her for the first time. "It's really nice having mum around," says Myskina. "Especially because we're staying in a house, so she is cooking for us."

Raised on the red dirt courts of Moscow's Spartak club, the Russian will need all the home comforts she can get if she is to make further progress at the All England Club. Yet, having now reached three grass-court finals - the 2002 Wimbledon warm-up events in Birmingham and Eastbourne were the others - Myskina is no stranger to the surface. Indeed, she recently declared a preference for faster courts. So does she enjoy playing on the green stuff?

"Well, I'm just happy to play tennis, no matter which surface or where we play. But grass, it's a little bit different. I don't - ". She stops short of spelling out her antipathy to the surface, but the message is clear. "I don't mean that I like the grass, or that I hate it; I'm just happy to play my tennis."

You would hardly guess it from watching her. Myskina's matches are angst-ridden affairs, full of dramatic gestures of self-reproach and dark mutterings. Yet, as her extraordinary run to last year's Wimbledon quarter-finals proved - she came back from a set and 4-1 down against Katerina Bohmova, beat Jelena Jankovic 10-8 in the final set and survived match points against compatriot Elena Dementieva - she thrives on adversity.

Myskina cites these performances as pivotal in kick-starting her recovery. "Before Wimbledon I was playing really bad. I lost my match first round [at the French Open]. Wimbledon turned everything. I was playing much better and winning matches after I played there."

Clearly the Russian has carried that confidence forward into this year's event, where the final is on July 8, her birthday. Both Mauresmo, whom she has overcome just once in eight encounters, and Maria Sharapova stand in her path, so the odds are against her reaching her third final of the year. But as Henine-Hardenne observed after their Eastbourne encounter: "She has a great game to play on grass, hitting the ball so hard and so long."

A place in the final would be quite a birthday present, would it not? "I wish," she says, "I wish - you never know what's going to happen." With Myskina, you never do.

lol i find it interesting that they discount Dementieva's chances of reaching the semis and seem to be so sure that it's shriekarova who she will play if she beats momo.

but then nastya's b'day is in a few days (on the day of the final) and if she reaches that far, a title would definitely be the sweetest b'day present! I hope they sing Happy B'day to her like the Aussie crowd did for 2 consecutive years on Marat's b'day!

What a pity. Especially the UE at 3-5 15-30 - that was what lost her the match, Mauresmo was really shaking as soon as they were rallying at that point.

Still a good fight though after the first set, judging from the score.

Sad I only got to see her for two games this tournament

Too bad Nastya!!!!

how can she only hit 6 winners on grass in a 3 sets match??

Hehe yeah, I was wondering about that too especially since service winners count as well.

As far as I could see it, Nastya did not play the way she did in the previous rounds, not fast enough, not as powerful, not as smart and especially not as agressive but Momo, she´s just a player who likes to have the match played according to her rules and she made that perfectly clear again (not counting the second set).

Still, Nastya had a very good run at Wimby again :bounce:

Filippo-Nastya
Jul 4th, 2006, 04:49 PM
What a pity!! In the 3rd set I was thinking "Come on Nastya, hold your serve till 4-4 and then Amelie will help you  " but unfortunately she was broken in the 6th game. It was a bad match, both players didn't play their best tennis.

As regard Nastya, she can be proud of her tournament. Today, I feared she would have given up at the end of the 1st set but she tried to change something at the beginning of the 2nd, she realized that Amelie was making a lot of errors with FH and she took advantage of that. Unfortunately, her effort wasn't enough to win this match

And now, I'm sorry for the other 3 players but I hope Justine will win the title.

From the Wimbledon web site:
http://www.wimbledon.org/en_GB/news/reports/2006-07-04/200607041152018353187.html

"No quarter was given at the start of the third. Four games passed without a point against the server. Then out of nowhere Myskina served two successive double faults and made two unforced errors to gift Mauresmo a break to love for 4-2. It was difficult to say which of the two players appeared the more stunned."
This part amused me.

Unfortunately I think she'll be 11th yet next Monday.
I'm not a big expert on rankings but if Lindsay will lose the 492 points and Mary the 174 points of last year's Wimby it should be something like:

9) Pierce 1636
10) Davenport 1588
11) Nastya 1575

And even Nastya's gap from the top 8 in Race to the YEC will be the same, 283 points behind Dementieva.

Why does Nastrya always lose when I get to see her match on TV? :bigcry:
It was an ugly match, from both players. Even in the second set, Nastya wasn't playing great. The Eastbourne-Nastya could have won today. But unfortunately, when she needs to play a big match, she just gets paralysed. No agressive play at all (like 4th round at RG), which resulted in only 6 winners (forced erros should be added to the stats too IMO). I think she just doesn't believe she can win vs Mauresmo. It looks like she gets on court thinking: will I lose 6-1 6-3 or 6-4 6-3? And Amelie was beatable today. What a wasted opportunity
The articles recently written about Nastya are so true. You never know which Nastya will show up. Today was the passive Nastya. She kept on fighting and so on, but she just didn't play her game at all. Very disappointing.
But, on a positive note, when I saw the draw I'd never thought she would reach the QF. I was a good tournament and I hope the last few weeks gave her the confidence that she needed so much. Her game ahs clearly improved this year, so I'm really looking forward to the second half of the season.

Nastya
i suppose it was good that i didnt see it then. i don't want the first match i see of her since AO2005 to be a loss. lol i was about to wake up at 2.30am to see if it would be on telly but when i first opened my eyes, it was already 6am!!

yeah it's disappointing that she didn't win but then i'm glad that at least she's fighting and staying positive. the old nastya wasn't really like that even tho she did fight at times.

Congrats to all the Germans (football players and fans) for the way they accepted the loss at the end of the match, really a great lesson of civility :clap2:

Yeah, there were a few smaller incidents but nothing special. For some reason, today it´s raining for the very first time since forever I think. Must be the tears of the German football God

But you know, that´s typical Germans. As far as I can say it (and I guess I can say a lot), those people may be boring sometimes but they are definetly great people to live with. So far my number one choice of people on the world.

That was a close QF. If Anastasia could have held at 2-3, she would have kept the pressure on Amelie.
But in a slam QF, you can't play such a sloppy game serving at 2-3.

Normally Nastya taking a set from Mauresmo would make me very happy. But I must say I was quite pissed after watching the match. Mauresmo was pretty much offering Nastya the win and Nastya refused to take it. She handed it right back to Mauresmo. If Nastya had even played decent she would have won. Very pissed off after watching the match. Mauresmo was in full choke mode especially her forehand. Unfortunately Nastya was in full choke mode as well especially her forehand.

Still I guess I should be happy that Nastya defended her points but I really feel that she blew a golden opportunity.

Terrible match from both players with very few entertaining points. I hope Nastya can keep playing on hardcourts.

In the last 2 sets against Mauresmo, Nastya lost her serve only once, so it's not bad. Unfortunately, in the 3rd set she won only 4 points on return (3 of them were Amelie's DF), that's the reason of the loss IMO.

So if I see it correctly (after 5 minutes of study), Nastya and Aza beat Shaughnessy/McShea 5-2 in doubles. Nastya then beat Shaughnessy 5-3 in singles. In addition to the other matches played, Nastya´s team won by 22-20 (games).

The WTT desperately needs a better website :o

Yep.
And according to the same site, Nastya and Azarenka lost yesterday against Morariu/Wozniacki 4-5 in doubles. She redeemed herself later, beating Wozniacki 5-1. In the end it seems that her team Springfield Lasers beat Kansas City Explorers 24-16.

Cincinnati, Ohio, USA: Anastasia Myskina spoke to the media on Monday afternoon, discussing her solid form of late and her upcoming opening round match against Serena Williams, among other things. The Russian is the No.2 seed in Cincinnati.

Williams isn't the only former Grand Slam champion here carving a comeback after some soul-searching.

She'll see another such star across the net tonight in a Western & Southern Financial Group Women's Open first-round match. Anastasia Myskina, who struggled with expectations and distractions after reaching a No. 2 world ranking in September 2004, appears rejuvenated and ready to battle Williams, a former world No. 1.

In describing the funk she endured in 2005, the 25-year-old Russian, ranked 11th and seeded second here, sounded a lot like Williams has.

"I didn't have a lot of emotions," Myskina said of last season. "I was on the court, but I was thinking that I don't want to be there."

She said pressure to match her 2004 season, which included a French Open title that marked the first Grand Slam triumph ever by a Russian woman, wore on her. Increased media scrutiny, including a failed lawsuit against GQ magazine for allowing it to sell topless photos of her to a Russian magazine, added to the difficulty.

Rock bottom occurred in May 2005, when a French Open loss to Maria Sanchez Lorenzo made Myskina the first defending women's champion ever to fall in the first round.

"When I was getting closer to the French (Open), I was really nervous, and I couldn't handle it, really," Myskina said.

"I was really kind of putting pressure on myself ... I was losing confidence every day."

In her homeland, Myskina had untold pressure to shoulder.

When she and countrywoman Elena Dementieva had met in the 2004 French Open final, they were the first Russian women to reach a Grand Slam final since Olga Morozova in 1974. Myskina has been more popular in Russia than expatriates Maria Sharapova and Anna Kournikova, counting former president Boris Yeltsin among her biggest fans.

Shortly after Myskina's French Open triumph, Medved magazine published some topless photos taken in 2002 during a shoot for GQ. Myskina said she was led to believe the photos wouldn't be published, and in a lawsuit last year seeking $8 million in damages, claimed the pictures caused her embarrassment, emotional duress, economic harm, and damage to her reputation. She lost the case.

Despite that misstep, Myskina actually maintains a reserved image that contrasts greatly with the likes of Sharapova and Kournikova.

"Maria and Anna ... they have a goal to be popular here (in America)," she said. "I have a goal to be popular in my country, and I am. They cheer for me there. For me, that means a lot. I want to help people in Russia and be there for them."

Myskina finished 2005 ranked 14th but has gotten hot this summer. She took Justine Henin-Hardenne to a third-set tiebreak in the Eastbourne final, then took eventual champion Amelie Mauresmo to three sets in the Wimbledon quarterfinals.

"I'm happy with the way I've played (lately)," she said.

Of her maturation after the rocky 2005, she said, "I just realized I'm not going to be playing tennis forever ... I want to do something good."

Williams is 4-0 against Myskina, though only one of those matches - a three-setter in the 2004 WTA Tour Championships - occurred after 2002. Williams' current ranking of No. 140 might make the American an underdog.

"I always played her when she was playing her best," Myskina said of Williams. "Right now, she hasn't played in a while, and maybe I have an advantage because I've been playing ... Hopefully I can play a good match."

It will be an important match tonight for Nastya!!
She has to play smart and stay aggressive. I noticed that against top players Nastya plays pretty soft, waiting for the error instead of playing her normal game

Anyway, Serena will be rusty and will make a lot of UEs IMO!
what time will the match start in France??

Silly about the sonyericson SB is that you don't get stats for Winners/UEs - so you can't really judge what's going on.

Anyway, take the second set Myskina!

I'm shocked by the score. She lost 2-2. I surely expected it to be closer. Unfortunately, we can't really judge if Myskina played like crap or Serena jsut amazingly well coz this tupid scoreboard didn't show us the UE's and winners stats.
Anyway, It's not that big of a disaster to loose to a playerr like Serena Williams. But this was Nastya's best chance to win for the first time against her. I wish she had taken this opportunity.
But congrats, Serena!

Pathetic loss for Nastya. It was always going to happen if she drew Serena in the first round. Now in a round or two Serena will probably have a bad loss. I really hate Nastya sometimes. I'm sure her serve was absolutely pathetic again.

She better play better at the more important summer stops.

well that was a trifle embarassing indeed ,Serena cant be under estimated and she is a better player ,or at least was than Myskina ,but I honestly thought Myskina would win this ,Nastya has been playing well lately and I find it hard to believe that Serena came right back to playing her best ,possible but highly unlikely.. oh well ,I guess its no great biggie really....but I expected better ,why is it Russians (minus MS who aint really Russian) cant sodding serve properly!!! ..well maybe next time eh....

Jul 19th, 2006, 09:50 AM
I'm not surprised at all to be honest :o
Serena was not going to come back if she wasn't really motivated ánd sure she could beat a lot of players.
Plus, Nastya might have been just the perfect player to draw for her, she hasn't got a lot of power, but more importantly, lately she seems to be the kind of player who beats everyone she's supposed to beat and loses against everyone who would be supposed to beat her. And Serena would be included in the last category (or so it feels anyway).

Blah, stayed up for this:sad:

ok...I think nastya played realy bad yesterday just because she wan in america and wanted to come back at moscow the earlier the better! if not I'm ashamed for her...I'm scared to go on the GM...nastya you could have fight just a lil bit!!!! I hope she is not as much shocked as we all are

Ignore GM ,it will get taken over by the WS Fans declaring the second comming of Christ! that said they have waited a long time so I guess they can have their little bit of glory...I am used to GM ,what with being a Lena fan and all ,seems that they think Lena and Nastya are the only ones who ever lose a match... full of idiots most of the time ,remain aboard the Gunship Myskina is my best advice..

Very disappointing. I can't believe she just lost 2-2. Did anyone see the match? Was it a superb Serena or a washed out Nastya (cause 'having a terrible day' is one of Nastya's trademarks)?
Reading GM was fun
Sometimes it's hard to be a Nastya-fan. From now on, I'll cheer for Justine, that would make my life (as a tennisfan) easier. Naaah, just kidding.
Maybe WTA should change the rules: forbidden to serve more than 100 mph
