I don't think it would be better for Nastya because if the seeds will follow the ranking, Nastya's possible opponents in the 4th round are (seeds 5-8) Petrova, Kuznetsova, Lena D. and Patty but with 1 more withdrawal her possible opponents would become (seeds 9-12) Venus, Vaidisova, Schiavone and Hingis so it's better IMO if Nastya won't be in the top 8 seeds.

2002 Eastbourne finalist Anastasia Myskina (pictured) swept aside Slovakian qualifier Jarmila Gajdosova 63 60 to set up a second round match-up with Jill Craybas. No.5-seeded Myskina posted outstanding grass court results four years ago, not only reaching the finals here but also in Birmingham. Last year, the Russian was stopped here in the quarters by qualifier Roberta Vinci before making her career-first run to the quarterfinals of Wimbledon.

"For my first match on grass, I was really happy," Myskina said. "I had a bit of a slow start, but that's normal since I’ve been playing on clay for so long now. It was a little windy today, but I think I handled the conditions well."

A little tougher than I would like but at least Nastya won.

I for one am pissed that Mauresmo is going to lose. I want to see Nastya beat a top player. Not Dechy. Oh well I suppose if she beats Dechy she will get a chance to beat a top player in the semis but I would much rather have her face Mauresmo. It would probably be her best chance for a win since Mauresmo seems determined to lose her #1 ranking at the moment.

Of course her chances are better against Dechy. She can only beat players ranked below her. That is why it is vital for her to be playing top ranked opponents as much as possible into she finally wins one or ultimately proves incapable of doing so.

Yes that AO 2005 loss to Dechy was the end of Nastya as we knew her. She had a wonderful opportunity to get to the semifinals. Instead she got blown out by an inferior player. One of the great missed chances from Nastya.

She can beat Dechy 100 straight times and it probably wouldn't make up for blowing that opportunity at the AO.

Yeah it sucks that Nastya can't be drawn with Patty. I hate special seedings. Now she will have Venus, Kuznetsova, Petrova, or Dementieva. I guess Dementieva or Petrova is the ideal draw now but neither of them are the push overs on grass that Schnyder is.

On the scoreboard of the Eastbourne web site there is written only the score of Kuzzie-ALG and nothing about court 1 so we don't know the score of this fucking Eastbourne cup.
And I'm getting nervous because I will have to follow Nastya-Dechy and Italy-Czech Republic at the same time...

Compatriot Myskina posted a 64 64 win over Nathalie Dechy, conqueror of Amélie Mauresmo, to set up a sixth career meeting with Kuznetsova. Myskina leads the all-time head-to-head series 3-2 but Friday's match-up will be their first on grass. Kuznetsova won their most recent meeting in straight sets but has to be weary because Myskina knows how to win on the lawns. Last year, she made a run to the Wimbledon quarters and in 2002 she made the finals at Birmingham and Eastbourne.

I believe Venus in Wimbledon wouldn't be as bad as Henin in Paris. Myskina knows how to handle the Venus-style kind of power game. Henin is much trickier.
None the less, any of the other three would be better.

Agree. I've always enjoyed being on rollercoasters at theme parks, but watching Nastya on them is far more nerve-wracking. I hope she goes deep in Wimby without a Jankovic style match early on.

Never liked real rollercoasters actually. But when they are free and can continue for over two hours without pause, like Nastya's - why not?

Myskina and Kuznetsova will play the second match today. Lets hope for a good showing.

The draw doesn't bother me that much. It is an opportunity for Nastya to show that she belongs in the top 10. She needs to beat top players to win a slam so may as well take Venus out early. Plus you never know what Venus you are going to get.

Finally a great win! This should send her to Wimbledon with high spirit - anything she can grab tomorrow will be a bonus. I truly hope for a strong showing.

The Wimbledon draw is bad - why does she always have to face the big favourite in the 4th round? :fiery:

Still, Venus has not impressed me at all this year - with Myskina's growing form, she is definately beatable, even on grass. As I said before, Henin on clay in the 4th round is far worse than Venus on grass in the 4th round. Myskina will just need to be extremely focused in that match. And beyond that (Mauresmo again :fiery: ) - we'll see when she gets there.

As regard the match, it was Nastya's best performance of the season vs a top 10, her attitude on court was perfect, she was focused and above all she was very hungry, she wanted this win so badly...
She was really aggressive today as you can see looking at the match stats (winners: Nastya 31, Sveta 18 UEs: Nastya 41, Sveta 36). She played her game without thinking too much to the opponent that she was facing and it was the right tactic.

Nastya  she was equal to Henin in this match, just a stroke of luck gave the victory to the Belgian.
Some improvement exists, still some errors, shaky serve but also great winners :hearts: and ambition to win.
I say we look forward to Wimbledon. She can take out Venus.

She cries after every lost match, that's just normal. ;) Besides, I don't think it is that bad - it shows her hunger and her determination. If one isn't enormeously disappointed after such a loss, it shows lack of winning/fighting spirit IMO. The positives from this match and tournament can be drawn later.

I am so disappointed too  So extremely close. A true thriller with the 'Anastasia Myskina quality mark' stamped all over it. But it should have ended the other way around :bigcry:

She played great tennis though, especially in the first set. She went on a little holiday in the second after a very unlucky start but stepped it up again at the start of the third. Never completely reached her set 1 level again though. But what a great fight, especially when 4-5 00-40 down :scared:

One thing is certain: she is ready for Wimbledon. Apart from the second set she was the one who determined play, often simply outplaying Henin. Great tactics too - balls at lightning speed towards Henin's forehand is the way to beat Henin on grass - she maybe didn't do that enough in the third set though.

It feels like almost forever since I saw her play that well - if she can go into Wimbledon with that form, the Williamses, Mauresmos, Sharapovas and belgians of this world better beware. Hopefully her taped leg will have completely healed by then too (didn't seemed to be bothered by it though).

But now I am going to drown my sadness... :bigcry:

Well done Nastya!! Great match, she is back. Her backhand was :lick: :lick:
Unfortunately, she played great tennis when the score was equal or when she was one game down while she made some errors when she was in advantage. Of course, she was sad at the end of the match but have you ever seen a player happy after a loss in the final and above all in the final tiebreak?
She can proud of herself and happy with the level of game she showed in this week.
Good luck at Wimbledon, Nastya!!
Congrats for the title, Justine!!

I don't know what to think right now. I'm happy that she reached the final and gave Justine a hard time, but I can't help being disappointed as well. She was so close. She just missed her first title of the year.
Nastya
I didn't see the match (just a couple of points when she hit some amazing winners) but I recorded it on video, and I'm sure I'll enjoy watching her match later today. Seems like it was some high-quality tennis, and she pushed Hennin to the limits. I'm sure my disappointment will soon be replaced by joy after seeing a well-playing Nastya. I'm proud of her!

But this was a great tournament and great possibilities looming ahead.
Looking forward to Wimbledon. GO NASTYA!!! :bounce: :bounce:

"I'm very happy with the way I played today and the whole week," Myskina stated. "I finally believe in myself again and the hard work is paying off. I really want to get back to where I was, as I was tired of losing. I want to win again and that’s a good challenge for me."

Nice words of Nastya :worship:
The retirement rumors are fake IMO

Nastya's quotes on the Eastbourne web site: “It was a great tournament for me and I played really, really good and showed that I can have a great year. I’m hungry, I want to win again and I’m pretty close to my best form. I’ve been working really hard, I’ve got a bigger team around me and everything is good.”

Unbelievable!! When I was watching Nastya's training in Rome before the match against Azarenka I was wondering who that blonde woman was!!
Sorry Larisa...

Maybe the retirement rumors were true, we'll probably never know ;) - still if she plays at around this level for the rest of this year, I'm sure she'll not think of retirement one more second, even if she doesn't reach the YEC.

I hope for the next weeks that she will manage to evade the lapses of concentration - like in the second set against both Kuznetsova and Henin - If she can manage that, she is truly back at the level she played in her last few matches of RG 2004.

And I think we should all be very grateful towards Neiland - since she appeared on the team, things really started to improve. :worship:
Of course I don't want to belittle Gerlach's or Myskina's part in that either ;)

it's great to see that nastya's happy! if she's happy, i'm happy.
but poor girl. finals are like a glass ceiling at the moment. the trophy's always in site but not quite there yet...damn those tiebreakers to hell! they just have to be in the last set and always have to be so damn close!

oh well. wimbly's next and she quite a bit to defend

Now she better not lose first round at Wimbledon after this superb performance in Eastbourne.

Nastya, even though you lost, i'm pleased with this week - I hope your are retrospectively too!
Beating a top 10 player, and then coming so close against Justine.
The best week of the year for Nastya - easily. :)

I just returned home after a three day fishing trip with my son to learn what happened. When I left, Nastya was going to play Kuznetsova. Wow! Of course, I'm sad for Nastya, having come so close to a tournament win, but as a fan I'm elated. Nastya is back to playing top-level tennis. Congratulations to her on a great tournament!

Nastya has a rest day first up at Wimby. That's good.
I hope she's ready to play Cara Black. Grass is Cara's best surface, but she should still be no trouble for Nastya.

But Radwanska shouldn't have been trouble for Nastya and we know what happened there.

Let us hope Nastya has no trouble. I don't think she will but I'm still a little scared of her losing this match.

Cara Black leads 2-0

1999 Linz (Carpet) 6-2 6-3
2000 French Open (Clay) 2-6 7-6 (4) 6-2

It is so long ago it's probably irrelevant though. Let's hope she wins easily.

I was home at my parents´ house where they have a digital satellite dish so I was able to watch Justine vs. Nastya live on BBC2. HOLY ASS!!! I have seriously NEVER seen her playing so well since the French Open´04. That was really amazing (if you don´t count the rollercoaster typical second set).

Hope she can continue that great game.

Yeah those previous meetings don't count as far as I'm concerned. Nastya was a nobody back then and Cara Black was a somebody.

Myskina won't play before wednesday, due to today's rain.

Good news actually: I won't be at home tomorrow, but I will be in two days

On a less selfish note: after last week an extra day of rest won't hurt + wedensday should be fine weather-wise - so no endless hours of waiting before she can actually get on court for her, hopefully.
