If her serve doesn't improve significantly she won't rise in the rankings much or contend for major titles anymore. Other than the serve she played pretty good I thought. Had some horrendous errors at bad times as well. But still much better than against Schnyder or Hingis this year.

Almalyk
Mar 30th, 2006, 12:36 AM
I guess it wasn't an absolute trouncing, but not as close as I hope.

Nastya wasted too many chances. Lost too many GP and BP.

Its funny the main reason I dislike Sharapova is the fist pumps and screaming. Same for Nadal I hate his fist pumps. But for some reason I like when Hewitt yells come on or does a fist pump. Maybe because everyone else hates it.

About what I expected in all honestly. I didn't think her serve would hold up well and it didn't. That is the main problem in her game.

well her serve wasnt horrible until she screamed at jens how she hated it. that ruined her mentality in general and specifically a lot on that shot.

This is her first QF at Miami.

She has not improved her serve at all. From the ground she was better than in the Schnyder and Hingis matches this year. Probably the Safina match as well. With the way she played today she sould be beating pretty much everyone ranked below her except probably Kuznetsova. Can't compete with the top 5 though.

For sure. That was the most frustrating aspect for me. To see her waste 4 break points on Masha's serve, then get broken after deuce on her serve the game after.

It is defnitely the weakness in her game. I think we all knew that though. We just hadn't seen how it would hold up against a top 5 player in quite a while. She only held 3 times in the match if I remember correctly.

After she got the hang of things, she did have some flashes of brilliance off the ground. Her speed is definitely her best weapon. From what I saw, she's definitely moving in the right direction. 2 main points of interest to get back to the top: Her serve and her consistency. Still has way too many UE's to compete with the best.

in 2004 she would hit regular backhands and then she'd hit it amazingly hard and flat. when she did that tonight it wasnt very effective. she needs to work on that.

I think she improved her game, i mean reliability, it were not too many UE, mostly it were forced errrors. But serve still leave much to be desired.

I think Nastya plays best on the run. It is something Brad Gilbert was saying and I agreed with him. Sharapova was consistently hitting it right back to Nastya and she couldn't do much with it. When she was moving to hit a shot it was much better.

Anyone know what her next tournament is?

I've just discovered the result.

I'm a little disapointed because I had high expectations btu afterall it was a pretty good tournament for her.
The good thing is that her game seems to come back (without the serve). However I read in some reports that her fighting spirit was doubtful! Did you noticed it?

I just think Sharapova really did step it up when it mattered. Myskina did well to bring up lots of break points, (I think she even had more than Maria, not sure...) but Maria played well on those important ones.

I liked what I saw today, despite the score. After the results over the past year and some, it looks like she's slowly getting back to what got her to the top in 2004, and that's sitting back, allowing for the error, and playing great defense. It was a great sign that Sharapova's serve and groundstrokes didn't really bother her too much. Really shows her ability to scramble for that powershot.

Mar 30th, 2006, 07:20 AM
Aw, how disappointing - at least she fought hard and long. Wishing for a good clay season, I hope she can continue to improve and crack the top ten somewhere along the way.

Maybe she should hire some extra trainer for some specific training on the serve, it seems to be her biggest weakness by far at the moment. If she manages to improve that significantly, many wins should come much easier.

frenchie
Mar 30th, 2006, 07:42 AM
I see different problems with her serve:
-first serve % is too low
-first serve is too flat
-she doesn't use her legs at all
-second serve average speed is too low
-too many DFs sometimes

Nastya should try to use her legs to hit a more kicked serve
Well I supposed she's already worked a lot on her serve, so it's easier said than done

The problem is that she did have quite ok first serve procentages over the last couple of days. Granted those serves were mostly played without much risk in order to avoid the second serve which is just a mess. Fact is she needs to improve her serve (first and second) A LOT. However, the problem is that she always only uses her arm and not the whole body. Mainly this is not because of a really bad technique but much more because she just lacks the needed back/shoulder/neck muscles so she´s not able or probably will never be able to put her whole body into a serve. Just compare action shots of Nastya to other players and there ios a huge huge difference.

If I knew how to teach her doing that, I would be rich by now;)

Still...Miami was a good tourney!

I think Nastya wasn't bad in her match with Maria.
I was happy that she didn't do too many mistakes, she really reduced the number of mistakes. She played calm, not showing too much emotion, and at the same time it was seen that she was burning from desire to win.
Nastya also looked veryyyyy beautifull, she was awesome.
She was just unlucky, couldn't convert very important break points and game points.
But she still should improve, now she must be good on clay and be ready for RG

her poor mother! when nastya was a child it must have been so hard to dispute her
it makes me think about a story one judge told me about her one day
when nastya was still playing junior she broke her raket (after a real show of course) so the chair umpire wanted to give her some point of penality then nastya looked at her and said "sorry madam...I didn't want to break it" and smiled and the umpire said "okay....go sit down now" the judge was so mad because she thought nastya deserved a penality...but when she smiles you forget everything for sure

While annoying, there's certainly no shame in losing to an on-form Sharapova. A good run to the quarters. Hopefully Nastya will continue to improve and move up in the rankings so she won't have to play Masha, Momo or others until semis and finals.

I don't understand why she is playing world team tennis. A waste of time in my opinion. I guess she will have fun though since most of the players seem to enjoy it. ESPN did show coverage of WTT last year so maybe they will do so again and feature Nastya's team. She plays WTT because they pay her. Easy money.

As far as this match goes, as I said before, this is no big deal.
Anastasia is cycling back to her good form, but she's not there yet.

A lot of this sport is mental, and she still needs to build more confidence.

When I saw the score this morning, I was really disappointed cause it looked like she got demolished and I hoped for a competitive match (I didn't really expect a win), but apparently she played well (Did she? I didn't see the match and stats don't tell everything.). Anyway, I'm happy with her performance in Miami and I'm hoping for some good results in the near future.

I'm very optimistic about Anastasia's future.
She was in the same situation Sveta was in.
They were under the radar, playing on outside courts, with no expectations. Always the underdogs when they played a big name on Center Court.

Then last year, they were the high seed on the show court. And they didn't handle it well.
Now they are both coming back to their good form, just in time for the clay season.

I saw the match this afternoon

She played pretty good but sometimes her shots were really soft! there are really improvements in her game and the match was a lot closer than the score suggests!
the serve was bad as always

BTW Nastya looked GREAT out there
The 2 french commentators were shocked!!!! They couldn't stop speaking about her eyes, about how great she looked
One of them even said that if he wasn't married, he could fall in love with her. He added that a lot of people of ES France share his point of view

That was great to hear!!!!!

First of all, congrats to Maria! Her victory is deserved because she played very well the big points of the match. I don't like her behaviour on the court but I have to admit that she is a great fighter. It's very tough to beat her in this moment.
But, I'm very happy about Nastya's performance. I think that (mentally) it was the best match of 2006 for our girl. She keep calm and patient for the whole match. Unfortunately she lost a bit of concentration with the Hawk-Eye in the last couple of games. I'm confident for the future, go Nastya!

I agree, her serve needs some major improvement! .. Moreover, some of her balls bounce up very short sometimes .. Her Down The Line shots were very impressive, though. I love seeing her play these shots. :yeah:
I'm very satisfied with her run at this tourney. I hope she continues like this. ;)

Actually apparently our satellite that shows sports and other pay channels (SKY) fell out of the sky last night and may have disintegrated in the atmosphere! It better be replaced before Roland Garros!

Yeah, actually she tried two challenged in a span of like 4 plays. She had just lost a challenge on a call on the baseline. She just laughed it off when the replay showed Sharapova's shot was good. Couple of plays later, she won on the serve replay.

Nastya had 2 challenges in the whole match, both at the end of the 2nd set. The first one when she was serving at 3-4 deuce, but she lost that because Maria's FH was on the line. She started smiling with irony when she saw the mark of the ball on the screen (probably she thought "It's not possible that Hawk Eye is better than my eyes" ), she lost the concentration, she played very bad the following point and she was broken. The second challenge, that Josh810 described us, happened in the last game.

OMG...I just downloaded the ace diamond presentation on myskina.ru....nastya is just sooooooooooooooooooo cute I like her lore and more! she can even lose in the first round every ttime I see her smile I pardon her all!
her poor mother! when nastya was a child it must have been so hard to dispute her
it makes me think about a story one judge told me about her one day
when nastya was still playing junior she broke her raket (after a real show of course) so the chair umpire wanted to give her some point of penality then nastya looked at her and said "sorry madam...I didn't want to break it" and smiled and the umpire said "okay....go sit down now" the judge was so mad because she thought nastya deserved a penality...but when she smiles you forget everything for sure

Hehe...I remember a match a few years ago where she really went nuts on court, throwing the raquet, screaming all kinds of stuff not only towards her coach and crew but also to the umpire and after she won the match she basically leaned on the ump´s chair and came up with the most apologizing and innocent smile on earth, head a bit lopsided and chatted with the ump...who btw was a woman. Her magic works both on men and women so it seems

I hope Nastya is flying back to Moscow right now ready to join her family and friends for a few weeks. I want her to have a good time and enjoy her spell, then be fully recharged for the clay season!

Anyone remember the clay season in 2004?? We didn't such success then either - who knows now? I remember being part of this cheering thread back then, and half of us doubted she could even pass Molik at Roland Garros.

Good break, and good luck Nastya

Nastya will be top10 after the french anyway :worship: as she has nothing to defend and the players around her in the rankings have a lot to defend (Kuzzy, Venus, Petrova, Schnyder....)
Let's hope she can have a top8 seed for the FO

I'm really not looking forward to the clay season. Nastya except for 3 weeks in her career has sucked on clay. Of course she had the magical run at the French and her first title at Palermo. Other than that she has been terrible on clay. I honestly have no idea what to expect on clay this year. Could be all first or second round losses or she could have another run like at the French.

Anastasia is sure to notice that Nadia won Doha, beating Amelie.
Then the IW and Mimai finals were the same players Nastya was beating in 2004.
Those players haven't suddenly become great. They are just playing to their 2004 form.

That's what Anastasia has to do. Get her 2004 form back.

Nastya is the black cat. I was going to say panther, but it's too big and aggressive. So she will just have to be the domestic house cat. Mysterious, stealthy, flexible and fast. And very regal looking.:cat: I love cats anyway (esp black ones) so it's a good choice for me. :hearts:

I agree. To make YEC, I'd predict she'd need at least 2 QF finishes in the 3 remaining slams. I don't think that's a harsh call either. The 'Top 8' for the year make YEC, the 'Top 8' in a slam reach the QF too.

I agree, it won't be easy. I think that unless injuries, Mauresmo, Shara, Henin, Martina, Kim and Lindsay will qualify for the YEC (Davenport will start to score a lot of points after RG). So Nastya will have to fight with her countrywomen that you have mentioned (plus Pierce) for the last 2 spots.

She fought really hard. I had gone to gym to play basketball when she went down 0-3 in the second set. I was stunned when I got back and saw they were still playing. When she got hurt I was devastated. Such bad luck.

I wish Nastya had shown that kind of desire to win when she played Maria. I thought Nastya played pretty well but she didn't seem to care that much that she was losing. She barely showed any emotion.

The next month of tennis will be boring for me since none of my top 3 favorites will be playing. Nastya and Lena D. not playing again till Warsaw with exception of Fed Cup for Lena which won't interest me much. And Tati is out for 4-6 weeks.

She won't be playing the entire WTT schedule. None of the more famous players do. They have matches every couple of days I think so on weeks when Nastya is off she will probably play WTT. And we used to discuss that a lot in 2003.

I felt that Anastasia's weapon is her court coverage. So on clay, she could run everything down.
Her weakness is her serve, and on clay, it's not so easy to take advantage of a serve.
Everyone has to play long points well to hold.

So I always felt clay is her best surface.
It plays to her strength, speed, and doesn't hurt her weakness, the serve.

I still feel clay is Nastya's best surface.

I don't think so!
Nastya's very flat strokes are less effective on clay IMO and her footwork is less adapted on clay too!
I have her fed cup match against Pierce from last year and I have to admit I found her pretty slow and often wrong footed

I still think hard court and indoor (rebound ace?) are her best surfaces :wavey:

I know she hits flat. We used to argue about this in 2003.
Indoor favors good serving.

Clay is, in fact, Nasty's favorite and most hated surface.

Spunky83

Well, I think that mid-tempo/slow carpet and slow hardcourts are her best surfaces, indoors.

I am too lazy to bring in some pros for my opinion but well...we all know her game.

Nastya is definetly not a good clay court player despite her fast movements.

Clay should probably be her best surface but it definitely isn't. She has such a terrible record on clay. She just happened to have an amazing two weeks on it to win RG. No results before that triumph or since indicate that she is a good clay court player.

Nasty doesn't have a best or worst surface. The only thing that matters with Nasty is what's going on behind those gorgeous green eyes. If her head is on right, she could win playing on broken glass, rusty nails and land mines. If not, well . . .

She was a good clay court player at that tournament. But what other clay court tournaments aside from Palermo which was her first tournament win as she shown that she is a good clay court player? There aren't any others that I can think of. One great tournament on a surface does not make one a great player on that surface.

Berlin 2004...I was there...

1st round: Bye
2nd round: def. Kostanic (qualifier)
3rd round: walkover
QF: Lost to Jen Cap in a match in which Nastya was hardly present

I don´t know if it´s an accomplishment having reached the QFs with just one win

French Open or not...I still regard clay as one of Nastya´s weaker surfaces but since there are a lot of players who suck desperately on the dirt, it´s probably Nastya´s advantage. I just want her to face a bunch of Americans on a very wet clay court.

Spunky I always agree with you. Patty gave her a walkover, that is the only reason she progressed. She played a terrible game against Capriati only clay in 2004, but then managed to totally reverse the result at RG. All I can say is that Nastya is random, alas I still :hearts: her.

I'll put it very simply, Anastasia's best chance to win a second major will always be at RG.
Her least best chance will always be Wimbledon.
The slower the surface, the better for Nastya.

If it rains for 2 weeks in Paris, the only thing stopping Nastya will be her own lack of patience.
She was patient in 2004.

I'm glad Nastya got passed in the rankings by Schiavone and Kuznetsova. She needs to earn a spot in the top 10. Not get back in because others are sucking and Venus never plays. She isn't playing like a top 10 player yet so she doesn't deserve it.

Nastya has to do it herself.
She can cover the court as well as anyone.
She is a veteran, and can mix her pace and placement of shots, which on clay, can really frustrate opponents.
It's all up to Nastya. Focus, and compete.

But you have to look at it like this--

1) You're a guy
2) You see Nastya and think, "Nice."
3)You watch her play and rip Cutie J several new ones
4) Oh dear . . .

1)You're a guy
2) You see Lena and think "nice."
3) You see Lena at a party with Mommy Vera
4) You see Lena at practice with Mommy Vera
5) You see Lena at an awards dinner with Mommy Vera . . .

It is REALLY hard to hit on girls in front of their moms. I tried it at a wedding once a loooong time ago and am still traumatized.

Seriously, though, between all the weirdos out there and the strains and constant travel of the tour, it's probably very hard for anyone to meet suitable partners, not just Lena and Nastya. Probably harder for the women because if you're a woman and tag after your boyfriend or husband it's fine. But if a man gives up a chunk of career to follow a woman around, he's labeled a mooch and a deadbeat. Not saying that's accurate, or the way it should be, but it's the way it is.

2 of my 4 favourite matches Nastya ever played are the one's she beat lazy Dav - so Kremlin semi-final 2004, and YEC 2004. The other 2 are SF and F at RG 2004.

I hope Dav's ranking slips into the 8-12 bracket by Wimby for two reasons. 1) She gets a harder draw and is less likely to go far, 2) so she is in the same seed bracket as Nastya and can avoid her.

Best example: Pierre-Yves Hardenne...

No seriously, you have a good point there. I´ve just read an article a few weeks ago about the husbands of succesful women. There are three options:
1) The husband just basically ignores his wife´s job and focuses on his own profession (example: Husband of new German cancellor Angela Merkel-he even worked when his wife got officially appointed)
2) They split up (Hollywood has a lot of examples)
3) The husband accepts his wife´s success and doesn´t feel stupid about it (examples: Pierre-Yves and Sandy Cohen from The OC - he´s not real though)

But let´s face it: Most men are afraid if their wives make the big money and most often people laugh about them as well. It´s sad.
