Nastya won 6-7(3-7), 6-4, 6-1.

Very much like the first round. Loses the first set, wins the second 6-4, and then steamrolls in the 3rd.

Still she lost a set to Pin which should never happen. But at least she won. Up next is Sofia Arvidsson. Obviously a match she should win but with her current form who knows. Sofia will have the crowd behind her but Nastya should have too much game.

Pfeu this was fun, all sweaty here
on a serious note, she's having trouble keeping the ball in I think :(
Fortunately her opponents don't have the stamina to resist a 3 setter againt a GS champ
Damn I want an interview from her so bad. Just want to laugh at the explanation for this (something like, I just love the Swedish crowd, I want to give them a show every time I play )

What do you mean? Bizarre lapses, slow starts, surprising blowouts all in the course of a single match sounds like Nasty's in GS-winning form!

Myskina´s serve was terrible. She lost her first service game, and at three all, double faulted three consecutive times to loose yet another one.

And again at five all, Myskina double faulted on game point to allow Pin to go up 6-5.

Wow! :tape:

After the match, when asked to comment on the way she played, Myskina said: "My serve was really bothering me. I hope it is not going to be like this often."

We neither!

Her serve seems to be the part of her game giving her major trouble. If she can sort it out she should be fine.

I don´t get what the problem is...understandable if it´s her shoulder again but overall serving like that shows a lack of confidence. She served great during her last third sets and the result reflect it. Having the chance to serve should be treaten as an advantage and not something having to deal with.

Serving the Stockholm;)...two sets today PLEASE

_LuCaS_
Aug 12th, 2005, 12:50 PM
Could be the shoulder, but serving 3 DFs in a row and no medical timeout is weird...
The tourney should get harder the more she's advancing

Srebotnik is one of those players I like to have as Nastya´s opponent...SHOULD be no problem for her.

Besides Nastya has a pretty good finals win-loss stats 9-5

Talked to my mum and she was like "hey, I saw Myskina has reached the finals!"...she likes tennis but I didn´t know she looked up the scores on the tv-text. Right after that she said: "Oh...Roddick sucks btw!".

Yep, my mum. Hope she will call me tomorrow at the same time and say "finally Myskina won!". And she doesn´t even like her

Maria is very likely going to drop out, she can´t play like that.

So basically this would mean that Nastya:

a) replaces Maria in the draw and receives a BYE as 8th seed
b) stays where she is and Maria will be replaced by a LL
c) will replace 3rd seed Kuzi and Kuzi will go on top as newly crowned 2nd seed...phew!

No matter what...they should announce that quickly cause at least that would mean that Nastya has a day longer to regroup.

I really hope - if Sharapova already knows she´s not gonna play - that she will announce it before monday cause that would mean Nastya switches place with Kuzi (and receives a BYE). If she withdraws after that, a LL will take Maria´s spot and I am sure that the tourney will wait with announcing her withdrawal cause of selling tickets.

Come on Maria, be nice and say it out loud tomorrow that you´re out! Be a good girl, you´re already Russia´s first no.1...please  :tape:

"Even if I didn't win I'm very pleased with my visit here. I have had a wonderful week and everything has been perfect. Everybody have been so kind and helpful, and the audience has supported me throughout the tournament, not to mention I've been blessed with sunshine in each game."

Srebotnik played Anastasia close in Antwerp. She's a solid player.
Now Nastya has to look at the positives. It's 10 out of 12.
She's not all the way back, but she's on the way back.

Damn, I think I'm glad now I don't get to actually see her matches. The was the first one since I don't know when. And :tape:

But really other than the end of the second set I wasn't too worried. She must really like playing three sets. I guess she wants to give the people their moneys worth.

favourite moments for me:

"Not possible!!" when she hit a ball long (she did have the wind at her back.)

throws her racquet down, it bounces right back up, she catches it, then wins a couple of points.

She is about to say something to Jens, but then waves her hand in a 'oh forget it' manner. She actually decided to not berate him.

least favourite:

2nd set match point - "Ho hum another win" *hits ball into net* "D'OH!!!" "Oh well, I'll let her win this set. Then I'll take her in the 3rd."

Apparently Nastya has entered New Haven. She will probably receive a wildcard since she can't get direct entry unless other players withdraw.

I have mixed feelings on this decision. Obviously she needs to play a lot to get back in form but she will also have played 3 weeks in a row going into the Open with most them being three sets.

I hope she doesn't burn herself out.

Congratulations on a win Nastya! Wish we could wipe the second set performance, but it's still a win. Nastya went down in 2 close tie breaks to Asagoe earlier this year - lets hope their fortunes reverse tommorrow.

I think it´s a good idea. Being tired is never good but at the moment, she just needs more matches. Besides you never know how many matches she will still get here. Tired or not, her game has nothing to do with it at the moment.

If she´s in form, I´d say it´s crazy to go to New Haven but at least this time it really seems like she enters a tourney in order to gain some match experience and not because of money or other reasons.

Former French Open champ Myskina enters Pilot Pen
Jim Fuller, Register Staff
08/18/2005

http://www2.ctcentral.com/images/smpenlogo.gifA high-profile Russian and Grand Slam champion was added to the playing field for the Pilot Pen Tennis tournament on Wednesday.

No, it wasn’t 2000 U.S. Open and 2005 Australian Open men’s champion Marat Safin, who hasn’t officially requested a wild card, although if his comments the last two days are any indication that could come as soon as today. However, the star-studded women’s field got an additional boost when 2004 French Open champion Anastasia Myskina entered the Pilot Pen.

"She (Myskina) said it (the 2001 Pilot Pen) was the breakthrough tournament of her career," Pilot Pen Tennis Tournament Director Anne Worcester said. "I was surprised because she didn’t enter early." In 2001, Myskina upset Amanda Coetzer in the first round before falling to top-seeded Lindsay Davenport. The following year she eliminated seeded players Justine Henin and Martina Hingis before falling to Davenport once again, this time in the semifinals. Her last appearance in New Haven was a brief one as she lost to Anna Smashnova-Pistolesi in the first round.

Myskina peaked at No. 2 in the WTA rankings in September, but between concern for her ill mother and a bothersome shoulder, Myskina has played an especially light schedule. In her first tournament since reaching the quarterfinals at Wimbledon, Myskina lost in the finals at the Tier IV event in Stockholm last week.

Myskina, currently ranked 14th, becomes the second Grand Slam champion on the Pilot Pen’s "next-in" list. She joins defending U.S. Open champion and No. 4-ranked Svetlana Kuznetsova, No. 13 Alicia Molik, No. 25 Tatiana Golovin and No. 26 Ai Sugiyama on the next-in list. If there are any withdrawals from the main draw before Friday’s deadline, the spots will be filled by players on the next-in list.

Myskina’s chance of earning a main draw spot improved with word from Serena Williams’ agent, Jill Smoller, that the former No. 1 player would not play in New Haven despite Williams’ decision to pull out of the Rogers Cup in Toronto on Wednesday.

WEll done Nastya! not a good match qualitywise by any means ,but shes getting there ,lets hope the Ankle is not too serious ,but dont be suprised if she withdraws ,ankles are dodgy things and best to not push it before USO time.

Watching her ,the main problem shes got is her concentration ,it just goes completely off the planet at times ,a bit like Elena does ,and she is still relying to much on her opponent making errors ,not gonna work with Kim etc ,but she is more fired up and no one can doubt her fighting spirit at all ,there were some marvelous shots out there today but way to many errors really ,but one step at a time ,her first serve is rather good indeed ,but alas the second is just as bad as Lenas ,as were the DFs ,seems to be a bit of a russian problem does holding serve  .

why have they showed mens tennis twice a day for the last two weeks but only three women's match per week. sexist or wta isnt marketing well and needs master series.

Well next week they are showing at lot of the women at New Haven according to their schedule anyway. Coverage starts on Wednesday which is good.

But I do agree. I would much prefer Rogers Cup coverage then Cincy. Didn't mind it to much last week though.

Well its nice to see Nastya winning some matches again ,and there is some postive things to be seen now,but from what I saw in Nastyas last two matches she has one problem...

She MUST start taking responsiblilty for her play ,yesterday it was the rackets fault ,the lines people ,her coach ,she needs to realise shes the one playing ,no one else ,its all down to her ,she needs to stop this constant ranting at coach and losing her cool ,I know its her character and we dont want to destroy that at anycost ,but she simply zones out and bang goes the set or match ,her play is simply not gonna dent kim etc yet ,shes constantly waiting for errors .

But on the Whole things look brighter indeed ,she may need to rest the ankle for a short while tho..

ANASTASIA MYSKINA

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. I guess the only question is: How do you feel? How is your ankle?

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: Well, it's okay. It's definitely not good. But, hopefully, by tomorrow, I'm going to be okay. Really hope so.

Q. Are you worried you might have to pull out?

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: Well, that's a tough question. I really can't say yes or no because I'm really hoping to do well here, no matter what. Maybe just today I have a pain and tomorrow might goes away because I'm going to do a lot of treatment today, and hopefully tomorrow I'm going to be good.

Q. It looked pretty scary. It looked like you turned it over pretty badly. Were you worried you might not be able to continue the match?

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: Well, you know, sometimes when you feel the pain, you try to be tougher, you really become stronger. So I was kind of thinking to finish the match because I was up. I really felt that if I just can put everything to that set, I'm going to be able to win the match.

Q. Is it a sprain that you have? Did you sprain the ankle?

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: Yes.

An excellent win for Nastya. I just hope her ankle is okay. She was wearing an air cast from what others have said.

Either way this is her second best tournament of the year only behind Wimbledon so far.

I hope Nasty wins big time.

As do I.

Here is some news on her ankle's status courtesy of the Rogers Cup website.

In an earlier quarter-final, Myskina was forced to dig deep in beating Argentinian Gisela Dulko 6-4, 7-5.

After spraining her left ankle in the third round Thursday, the Russian Myskina came on court wearing an air cast. After the match, Myskina said she was receiving daily treatment on her ankle and it was getting better.

Although she managed to cover a lot of ground in the match, she admitted she had problems getting to some shots.

“I had trouble with drop shots,” said Myskina. “I don't know why Gisela didn't hit more.”

well good luck Nastya tomorrow ,but i fear its not gonna be easy at all ,every point is gonna have to be earned ,Kim simply does not make errors very often and moving is sometyhing that Nastyas gonna have to do a lot of ,i am worried this is NOT good for her ankle at all ,just before the USO ,but I suppose she knows what shes doing..

Myskina, the No. 9 seed, battled through a sprained left ankle to defeat Gisela Dulko of Argentina 6-4, 7-5 in the quarter-finals at the Rexall Centre on Friday while No. 7-seeded Clijsters trounced Flavia Pennetta of Italy 6-0, 6-1.

Myskina turned the ankle returning a shot during the second set of her match against Japan's Shinobu Asagoe on Thursday. She hobbled to the sidelines in tears, had her ankle taped and returned to the court to close out a 7-6 (5), 7-5 victory.

Myskina, 24, underwent treatment for the injury until 11 p.m. EDT Thursday then had more therapy Friday morning.

The Russian said Dulko didn't take advantage of the injury.

"Some moves it really bothers me, but some of them were OK," she said. "I didn't really think that Gisela played really smart with me today, so that was big advantage for me. Definitely, the dropshot was the key, but she didn't use it."

Dulko, 20, broke Myskina to tie the second set 4-4 then held to take the lead but Myskina won three straight games to secure the win.

Myskina said she was pleased with her performance.

"My coach even said that I played well," Myskina said with a smile. "That's really new. I'm really happy with that."

But she knows it will be a tougher challenge Saturday.

"She's a great tennis player," Myskina said of Clijsters. "Whatever she's doing on the court, she's doing amazing - especially the way she moves on the court, it's just unbelievable. So for me it's really going to be tough tomorrow. I have to play unbelievable to win the match."

Here is the interview from after her match today:

ANASTASIA MYSKINA

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. Obviously, the first one is: How do you feel?

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: Happy. I'm happy that I was able to push myself today in playing I think pretty good. I'm just really happy with that.

Q. That was quite a thing you had on your ankle with the two splints on both sides. Was it uncomfortable?

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: You know, I didn't really feel uncomfortable. I just felt big help from this cast because at least it was holding my ankle and it was much better with this cast.

Q. Were you feeling a lot of pain? You didn't seem to look like you were in pain. Was it causing you pain?

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: Well, it depends on the moves. Some moves it really bothers me, but some of them was okay. I didn't really think that Gisela played really smart with me today, so that was big advantage for me. Definitely, the dropshot was the key, but she didn't use it.

Q. Did you feel like you were getting more comfortable as the match went on?

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: Yeah, that was also a good thing because, you know, maybe the blood was circulate in this spot (pointing to ankle). By end of match I felt much better than in the beginning.

Q. Was there ever a time either last night or this morning when you didn't think you were going to play?

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: Well, last night I had acupuncture and it hurt so badly. At that time, when the needle was in my leg, I felt I'm not going to even move any more (laughter).

Q. Have you had acupuncture on injured parts of your body before or was that a new experience?

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: No, I had before. But yesterday was so much pain. It was something new (smiling).

Q. You mentioned that your opponent didn't play smart tennis. Are you talking about she didn't move you around the court or just the dropshots?

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: She didn't really move me around the court. I don't know, I felt she could have used this angle more because usually she play a lot of angles. Usually she plays a lot of angles, not today really.

Q. Other than the splint, you were wearing that patch. We've seen Justine also wear that kind of patch. Can you explain what that is, what it actually does?

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: It just support the muscle, support the leg. You mean the bandage, the tape?

Q. Looks like a bandage.

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: It support the muscle, of course. Really the trainer will explain better than me. But I just felt big support, and it holds my leg to not really, you know, loosen up and move.

Q. It's not warming, doesn't provide heat or anything?

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: No, no, no.

Q. Besides the injury, it seems that you played well.

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: Yeah, definitely. Well, my coach even said that I played well. That's really new (smiling). I'm really happy with that.

Q. Was it like this in Stockholm last week, as well?

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: No. In Stockholm was different because I had to push myself through the cold weather. It was different.

But I'm really happy that I'm in the semifinal here.

Q. How do you explain that? You are more focused on your game? You are feeling much better physically, even if you have this injury?

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: Yes, I think I'm more confident right now on the court. I feel that I can win now. Because at the beginning of the year, I was losing lot of easy matches. I was really in bad condition.

But now I'm feeling much better.

Q. Can you talk about the treatment you had last night or yesterday and how much you had, how many hours, what all they did.

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: Well, it was almost the whole afternoon after my match. I had just the soft tissue, acupuncture, steam, ice, everything. So pretty much it took me the whole night to be ready for this match today.

Q. At the end of the night, did you feel like you would make it and everything would be okay?

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: By the end of the day, I felt so tired. I just really went to bed. Practically well, I feel much better last night already in the end of the night. I felt that I can try at least. And I tried.

Q. Can you speak on the importance of staying in this tournament now that a lot of top seeds have dropped out and your opponent today was someone who was unseeded, just in terms of the ranking points?

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: What do you mean?

Q. By staying in and toughening it out, there's a lot to be gained in terms of the ranking points, isn't there?

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: Well, I don't really count the ranking points. I just need to get more confidence before US Open. That's what I need more, to stay in this tournament, to prove to myself that I can play, that I'm able to play, and I'm able to win.

Q. There was no danger, really thought in your mind that it could worse to your ankle by staying in?

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: Well, I spoke to the doctor. My coach spoke to the doctor. They said it's not going to go worse. Especially with this tape, it's really hold my ankle, so it's not going to go worse for sure.

Q. With Serena and a lot of top seeds out, do you see this as even a better opportunity to do better at this tournament?

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: Of course. I mean, I'm going to do treatment today. Well, you know, if I play, I play hundred percent no matter what. I really want to do well no matter what. I'll try to play probably with Kim tomorrow. I really want to push myself again because Kim is not Gisela, even Gisela good player, but Kim, higher‑level player. Of course, I want to push myself tomorrow.

Q. Did you have an MRI or x‑ray of the foot?

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: No. The doctor said that I don't need this because it's definitely I sprain my ankle, so it's not going to be any news from that pictures.

Q. It looks probably like Kim is going to take that match. Can you talk about what sort of player she is and what challenge her game provides yours?

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: Kim is just a great person. Besides that, she's a great tennis player. Whatever she's doing on the court, she's doing amazing ‑ especially the way she moves on the court, it's just unbelievable.

So for me it's really going to be tough tomorrow. I have to play unbelievable to win the match. Hopefully I will do it.

Q. What is your opinion on the thought that some people say Kim is just too nice to be a Grand Slam winner, top‑flight tennis player?

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: I don't really hear this comment. I'm not agree with that because Grand Slam finals, it's a little bit different. It's a lot of pressure. Kim, yeah, young, born '83. She's a really young girl. Sometimes it's really hard to handle the pressure on the final.

But I think in the future she's going to be tougher and she become stronger. Well, I'm sure she's going to win one of the Grand Slam.

Sounds like she her ankle injury isn't going to get any worse. It was a nice interview. Poor Nastya never gets compliments on her game from Jens

I just read in the live scores thread that play has been cancelled for the rest of night because of tornado warnings. If this is the case then maybe just maybe ESPN will show Nastya's match. There only option would be that match or Clijsters and Pennetta. And seeing as how Clijsters won 6-0, 6-1 you would think they would show Myskina/Dulko which was close. Of course ESPN sucks so maybe they will show Clijsters or just scrap their coverage all together

I wonder what the semi-final match will be. I'll be so pissed if it is Henin-Hardenne and Mauresmo which is what I'm expecting.

Please let it be Nastya/Clijsters.

Also the New Haven draw is out. Myskina is the 8th seed and starts off against Anna Chakvetadze. After that would be Dechy or Farina Elia in the second round. I'd be surprised if she doesn't withdraw though.
