Nastya won two consecutive tournaments. That takes a lot of concentration. And there's the physical wear and tear.
It's not surprising that Nastya couldn't stay at that level of mental focus for three straight weeks.
It's still a great run by Nastya. Something to be very proud of. She won the KC after beating Justine in Leipzig.

Nastya didn't make it 3 wins in a row over Patty Schnyder. In fact Schnyder whipped Anastasia 1 and 1! I don't think Anastasia has much left to give this year. Very unfortunate of Myskina :( Justine has a top player instinct. It's not that easy to beat her in a the big tournament like this. It's a totally different story from Leipzig. She would do everything not to let Myskina win her twice in a row.

As for today match, Ai is a dangerous opponent as well. Plus, she has a day off, and Myskina must be tired out from the last night match. However, she still has a chance if she fights hard :)

GL, I watched ESPN2's coverage of the Myskina - Henin match. And I'm shocked Anastasia lost the first set after being up 5-0! That was a horrible way to lose the first set and it cost her the match. :(

The truth is if Anastasia had half of Henin's great poise and mental toughness she would have won this match.

Eggy, are you saying Henin faked her feeling weak injury timeout? She's taking antibiotics and obviously not feeling well. All the trainer did was take her blood pressure and reassure her she was okay. That put Justine's mind at ease and she played better tennis after that. Anastasia still should have won the first set and the match. And Anastasia wasn't upset about the injury timeout because she gave Justine 2 kisses and her congratualtions at the net. That proved to me that Anastasia is a good sport even after losing a very tough match. :)

Oh Vaiva, you're being too hard on Anastasia and the Russina's. She's getting the most out of her ability. For her to end the year at #7 is a great achievement. I know she let the match aginst Justine Henin slip away but that will happen sometimes because Ana is a streaky player.

When you're up 5-0, you have to close it out. Capriati was up 5-1, and she found a way to finish.
When Nastya gets that opportunity, she has to win that 6th game.

She is a good fighter after all. She might be too nervous against Jenn and Justine at the end of the 3rd sets. The worse match is the one aginst Justine cuz she should have won in two. She should have taken advantages of them not playing their best tennis. If those matches had been tier II or III tournaments, she could have won at least against Jenn cuz it seems to me Jenn is just interested in big tourments.

Pierce took the first set from Myskina 6-4. :( Russia is in deep trouble in this tie. They just don't have the muscle and power to match Amelie Mauresmo and Mary Pierce.

And playing Vera Zvonareva instead of Elena Dementieva is a puzzling move. She was completely overmatched by Mauresmo's talent and power. Now Mauresmo probably would have beaten Dementieva. She's a better tennis player and own Elena indoors. But the bottom line is you must win or lose with your best players. That's true in any sport. Dementieva needs to play tomoorow against Pierce. I can't see Pierce beating a rested Dementieva who is twice as fast as Pierce.

And what has Zvonareva done in recent months to merit playing singles in the Fed Cup semifinals against France? Where was Nadia Petrova who actually has a weapon which is her fine first serve?

But it's up to Anastasia to save the day. She must win these next 2 sets and even the Tie at 1 for Russia to have a realistic chance to advance to the 2003 Fed Cup finals.

Udachi Anastasia! :bounce:

Congrats to Anastasia on a great comeback win! :D She saved a match point and saved Russia from an almost certain demise in the Fed Cup semifinals. But Russia is still in trouble because I don't see Amelie Mauresmo losing her second singles match. Maybe Ana can surprise me and upset Mauresmo. But I would be pleased if Russia could make the doubles match a live match.

Anastasia Myskina may lack power and an intimidating physique that alot of the Russina's have. But she has the fire and desire that most of the Russina's lack. She showed great heart today. Ana didn't want to lose on her home court in the Fed Cup semifinals and that's what drove her to a greay comeback victory. She came through in the clutch. :)

Nastya had a great year. #1 Russian. #7 in the world.
But in L.A. she lost close matches to Justine and Jennifer. And now Amelie.
Nastya is right there with these top players. She needs to take one more step forward in 2004.

Instead of being so confident in interviews, she should mention that Bovina is the superior player. That would only be right.

Forgot to ask if he was still her coach but I would guess not, would be too odd I guess no?

It could only mean that she has split with the German. Because, from what I remember, her previous bf was Artyom Derepasko, and she left him for her German coach at list 2 years ago or so. So, the German does not qualify as new in any way. Well, I didn't really like that baldening German anyway, or was I simply jealous ?

Thanks for the news, but it somewhat surprises me. Her German boyfriend was at the YEC with her, and she looked at him almost every point she lost. Besides, in the interview she had with Hingis, she talked about him like he was the one helping her improve a lot lately. I thought they would be together for at least a few more years cuz she seems to admire and love him so much. This is life, so whoever is her current boyfriend is really lucky cuz she is a nice and smart girl.

Anyway, I wonder if this will affect her game in 2004. I guess it doesn't, and I hope she will do well next year :)

What do you guys think she'll need thye most next year to play against the 'Waffles' and the William's sisters successfully?

For 2004 I am very optimistic.
She improved a lot this year and she has abilities and potential. Maybe you haven't realize one thing about Anastasia. When you watch her match and really think about her game you can see that she has great anticipation. In this point I can compare her to Martina Hingis, she always knew when to be on court and so do Nastya. This is very valuable gift and will be very helpful for her, I'm sure about that. Just what she has to do is get some muscles and have stronger game and better serve, because one more thing she does great is running. She is extremely fast. So you can see what a potential she has and I really belive that if she will work on these elements I said she will be top 5

Changing boyfriends is very Hingis-like.
I'm against heavy weight training. I don't see Meghann improving.
This was Nastya's best year ever. She played her best tennis this fall.
Nastya beat JHH and Mauresmo in back to back finals. You can't do much better than that. But you can do it more and more over the next few years.
What Nastya has been doing is working. She keeps improving. She fights. She competes.
I wouldn't make any radical changes in training or mental preparation.

France won the Hopmans Cup tie 2-1. Santoro is a tremendous doubles player, and he went at Nastya almost all the time. Nastya was not happy in the second set of mixed, which France won 6-3, 6-4.
In singles, Nastya was up 4-1 in the second set but lost to Mauresmo.
But it was a good return for Marat. Nastya has to remember that it's just the start of 2004. Wins will start coming.

Not only was Nastya playing the world's # 4, but Mauresmo just played two exhibition matches in Belgium. She was more ready for this.
Nastya played well. She won several points with her down the line first serve. Mauresmo was able to attack some of Nastya's second serves.
In the doubles, Santoro was the best volleyer. And he kept the pressure on Nastya.
But this is an exhibition that gives Nastya three singles and doubles matches to prepare for Sydney and Melbourne.
And Nastya won't be playing # 4 in the first round anymore.

Yeah, that's true. It will definitely help her. Mauresmo lost her exhibition match to Sharapova so it's not anything bad that Nastya lost to world's #4 her first season match.
And please tell, how was Nastya's serve? Is she more confident with that or second is light like it was before?

goldenlox
Jan 5th, 2004, 09:41 PM
Mauresmo was able to attack some of her second serves. Her serve was okay. There were a lot of long, well played games. The score was 6-2, 7-6(2).
But Nastya was serving at 4-2, 30-30. It was a close second set. I think Nastya needed the first set. Mauresmo lost her first set in Belgium 6-1.
I'll see Nastya's second match tomorrow night. In about 29 hours. She plays Strycova.

Nastya won the first set 6-3, in 25 minutes. Strycova just goes for winners. And makes a lot of UE's. Nastya is moving her around.
Marat plays Novak afterwards. Then mixed. Russia has to win 6 sets to 0 to stay alive for tomorrow's tie with the USA to be meaningful.

goldenlox
Jan 8th, 2004, 03:36 AM
Nastya won 6-3, 7-6(0). The second set was long and sloppy. Both players made many, many UE's.
Nastya can learn from this. No matter how your opponent tries to slow the pace, or break your rhythm, you have to stay focused on every shot. And Nastya didn't.
Fred Stolle said Nastya serves with her arm, not her body. He said that was Hingis' weakness. He also said Nastya hits her forehand off the back foot too often.

In fourth round she will probably have Rubin like last year ;)
Go Nastya !!!! Kick some ass there !!! :)

It's hard to not look ahead to the third and fourth rounds. But Nastya has to go one match at a time.
That's how she reached #7 in the world. And if Kim is injured, this could be Nastya's best major yet.

I hope Nastya can make her best slam result here :)

With injuries to Capriati and Davenport, the next several weeks could be Nastya's best chance to reach the top 5.
5 (6) J. CAPRIATI 2764.00
6 (5) L. DAVENPORT 2419.00
7 (7) A. MYSKINA 2378.00
8 (8) E. DEMENTIEVA 2373.00
9 (9) A. SUGIYAMA 2369.00

Both Nastya and Elena are getting closer.

Yep :)
That is for sure goos ocasion. Capriati withfrew but Davenport still plays and her shoulder injury seems to not be so big. We have to wait till she will be playing and how her injury will be. I wish Davenport to be fine because it would be not fair play to wish her injury again and I like her...but it would be just great for Nastya :D If Kim's ankle was not good she could make semis...then top 5 would be more realistic :)

MELBOURNE (Reuters) - Sixth seed Anastasia Myskina swept past Emmanuelle Gagliardi 6-2 6-4 to advance to the third round of the Australian Open on Thursday.

The Russian, who reached the quarter-finals in Melbourne and at the U.S. Open last year, raced through the first set and secured the vital break in the seventh game of the second set after a wild forehand from her Swiss opponent.

Myskina squandered her first two match points, the second on a nervous double-fault, but another forehand error from Gagliardi wrapped up a comfortable victory for the 22-year-old from Moscow.

Okay, luckily I had the pleasure to watch Nastya's match with Gagliardi today :)
Here is very short report about it.
First Nastya has very pretty outfit and looks very good ;)
With the match:
Nastya started very very strong with her great game. She was hitting very hard and precise and was hitting winners or forcing Gagliardi to make errors after her great shots. In the opening game she broke to love and then was playing so well, really. Almost wasn't making any mistakes but just playing strong and very smart game. She was just so calm and hitting strong and difficult shots with such a confidence :hearts: She was just too good and took 5-0 lead and was serving for the match. Everything was great she had 40-15 but double faulted and the hit on the net..And here she started doing her famous things :P She lost that game and one after that but closed the set 6-2.
In the second set it started to be bit tougher. Anastasia seemed not to be so focus as she was at the beginning. But I think that's normal, when your shots are so good and you you you have so huga advantage it is just so hard to stay at the same level of concentration... Anyway she was winning her service games. It was funny to watch :D After every error, sometimes even that forced she was so mad at herself, talking to herself, throwing raquet, screaming and all those her things. She was just so pissed off. But she wasn't losing her serve games, actually in the middle of the set she won two in a row to love so it was still good. At 3-3 she finally broke Gagliardi and took advantage that let her win the match. She won her service game too and was leading 5-3 when Gagliardi was serving. We could see she really wanted to close this match at that moment but unfortunately hit a forhand few metres in aut and (that was funny) screamed veeery loud 'WHY ?????' ;)
But the next game she was serving and with calm and confidence closed up the match 6-4 in second set.
In conclusion I can say that she is in really good form now. We could see how great she is able to play when she is well-focused in the first set. but just the opponent was much worse and that's clear she wasn't playing on that level whole match. But I think that when she will be playing with tougher opponents like Rubin or Kim she will be fine. Just her game in the first set was GREAT.

Thanks Nastya :)

I'm glad Nastya played well. This next match is important. A big part of the Sharapova hype is to belittle Nastya's accomplishments.
If Nastya loses, these tennis commentators will make it seem like being the Russian #1 for 2002 and 2003, and winning the KC, are nothing.

Nastya has to really focus for this match. I don't believe anything coming out of the Sharapova camp. They are all proven liars.
Nastya has to treat Maria as if she's totally healthy. Don't just try to run her around. Play your normal game.

If both Maria and Nastya play their beest, it will be Nastya winning. Masha is good player but I don't really understand why she is such a big star, it's because of her look. Her tennis is very good but nothing better that other high ranked players. Nastya is #7 and she won all these things and she is Russian no.1 . If she plays like she did in first set in 2r she will win this match. Because which top players has Maria beat? Ok, she was winning Tier IV tournaments and was playing really well but to beat top ten player you have to play really great or need the opponent's errors.
In three words - Nastya should win :)
C'mon !!!! :)

Maria wasn't going to beat Nastya, unless Nastya had one of her very inconsistent days... which have been gone since Toronto.

This injury sucks... now the Masha "fans" have so many excuses for this "future Grand Slam winner" who's yet to defeat a Top 10 player.

Nastya won 6-4, 1-6, 6-2. She's going to have to hold serve more effectively to beat a player at Rubin's level.
Still, Nastya showed who's Russian # 1, and who isn't.

It's good that Myskina won. Maria is a good returner, IMO. She also ate up Elena's serve in HK. Chanda on the other hand never takes advantages of the weak serve when she plays Elena. However, Chanda is Chanda. She can be really dangerous. If Myskina wanna win, she needs to be focus more than today. She loses concentration pretty easily.
Go Myskina :bounce:.

Keith17

I really like Nastya's chances against Chanda.

Chanda hasn't been playing great really for the past few months, and if Nastya just remains consistent, I think she'll win. :)

Then, she'll face Kim again... and unfortunately, they're not playing in Leipzig, so Nastya will be dismissed rather easily.

A. MYSKINA/M. Sharapova

6-4, 1-6, 6-2

An interview with:

ANASTASIA MYSKINA

Q. How did you find that match?

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: Right now I feel great. During the match, it wasn't kind of really good because I was really nervous.

Again, when two Russians play, it's always kind of nervous match. I know that was not really the best match today, but I really happy that I won.

Q. Had you played her before?

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: No, that was the first match ever.

Q. And what sort of things will you be working on before your next match?

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: I play Chanda, I guess. I play her here last year, same round. We know each other really well. Just know I have to do best things on the court. Just have to put pressure on her and definitely have to serve better. Just fight for every point.

Q. Can you talk a little bit about her game, what it was like playing against Sharapova?

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: I believe Maria, she not played that good today. I think she was really nervous, yeah, as me. I just, you know, had no idea the way she play. Just knew she hit the ball pretty hard.

But I just had to put the ball better, you know, one more shot than her.

cool_olga
Jan 24th, 2004, 11:56 AM
For Chanda I'm pretty sure Nastya can beat her. She isn't in her best form right now, even had to play three tight sets with Svensson in first round.
And I guess Nastya should be less nervous, because she is most nervous when she plays Russian...If she will play well and will be focused through the whole match she will win :)

Nastya and Rubin have split 4 matches. Nastya won the last one here, 6-1 in the third last year.
Rubin didn't win a set in Hong Kong singles. The other three are out of this tournament.
It shows how meaningless exhibition results are.
