SOPOT, Poland - French Open champion Anastasia Myskina left the Idea Prokom Open without explanation before her semifinal Friday, forfeiting her match against Klara Koukalova of the Czech Republic.

Myskina will explain her decision at a news conference Saturday, the Polish news agency PAP said. The match featuring the top-seeded Russian eventually was washed out along with the entire day's program.

Tournament officials could not be reached for comment, but Myskina was not listed on the official schedule for the women's semifinals Saturday.
there's the AP trying to make myskina look bad..... :fiery:

OK but why enter at all then? Stuff the Polish fans who have paid their hard earned money to see her seems to be the attitude. AND I'm a fan of Myskina - hope she hasn't picked up a niggling injury though.

I hope she's not injured. But it was not a good decision to play here with the Olympics next week.
There was always the chance of a rain delay, or an injury. The article says Nastya will hold a press conference tomorrow.

she hasn't stuffed them...... i'm sure they expected this.. she can't control the weather so she's gotta do what she's gotta do.... hmm... just like the slogan they're using.

no time to play 2 games on saturday... that's asking way too much...

Well said GL. It was a mistake for Anastasia to play in Sopot. I feel sorry for the Polish tennis fans and Cool_Olga who were thrilled to have the 2004 French Open champion there only to have her quit the tounramnet before it's conclusion.

Will the tournament pay Nastya was she has earned for making the semifinals or will they choose not to pay her because she quit the tournament?

deckham
Aug 13th, 2004, 10:18 PM
either way... i'm sure nastya doesn't care too much about that.... but they need to understand the circumstances.. so she should be paid...

Marat Safin played Sopot too. But he tanked...I mean lost in straight sets early enough in the tournament where he could get to Athens without rushing. It's a shame it came to this for Nastya. But she has upset the Polish tennis fans and jeopardized her chances to medal in Athens by playing this week when she should have been resting.

deckham
Aug 13th, 2004, 10:33 PM
let's just hope she's not injured.....

because if she is she needs to be careful how she goes about telling the press and everyone. it's pretty obvious if she is injured she still wants to play the olympic games, so that will tick a lot of people off..... but she has priorities and the olympics is one of them....

so those people who are bitter towards her about her decision need to look at it from her point of view.... weather (and possibly injury) were against her in Sopot.... but she has a chance to rest and play the Olympics, once every 4 years to represent her country. there's not much of a decisioin there if you ask me.

alright.... the latest news i've heard is nastya has withdrawn with a light shoulder injury which has been confirmed by the wta physio's and supervisors..... :awww:

so it makes sense nastya withdrawing like this.... her shoulder can't handle the strain of 2 matches in one day.. there's no way. that would be asking for a serious injury and missing out on her olympics and u.s. open chances.
she wants to play olympics, she hasn't hid that fact... so she's doing this in the best interest of her shoulder and the olympics.
ice and rest it nastya..... we need you 100% in athens........... :yeah:

She hurt her shoulder which could cause her to miss the Olympics. :( Playing Sopot was a bad idea from the start. Shoulder injuries can be very serious so I hope Anastasia takes care of the injury. How can she possibly handle playing singles and doubles in Athens with a shoulder injury?

well it doesn't sound like anything too serious.... ;)

just nagging enough to know she can't play 2 matches in one day of singles.

let's just hope she gets a monday draw.... that way she was able to rest and ice it for 3 full days.... only time will tell.... :awww:

i see it being an agonizing decision to pull out of doubles... she has really got to be hurt if she does that. lena d's one of her best friends and it is the olympics... if she pulls out of doubles i think she's basically saying that she really is too injured, meaning her singles run probably won't be much.. :bigcry:

so i don't see her pulling out of doubles....

I am afraid we have a problem here. By WTA rules she can not withdraw from a tournament and then play in the tournament that starts next day. She has to have a verifyable injury for that, which, by this schedule is not soemthing she can do. She can't withdraw just because Olympics are more important. More than that, if by any chance the tournament is not finished tomorrow, by WTA rules she will have to withdraw from the next tournament to have her current tournament completed. Low ranked played doing well at pre-Slam tournaments do it all the time.

Really bad news

I dont un derstand why things like this happen to her. It is sad for her, for her fans , Cool olga must be very disapointed. I would like to know why she entered Sopot, and left tihs way. If she is injured then she should not play in Athens, if she left coz Athens is more important then it is a shame she is not really comitted to her schedule. At the end, she gained nothing .

/I agree. If it is a minor injury she might pull out of doubles and se how far she can get in singles, either way I still dont se the points of going to Sopot one week before the Olympics.

I don't know now if there's going to be this conference or not...Yesterday they said it will be but it was before the reason of withdrawing was known, she was supposed to explain it. Now when all know it's shoulder light injury I don't know if conference is still actual, I would hope so, I really want to see her last time. At this autograph session she told me we can talk after her match, after press conference and because of this stupid rain I even didn't have a chance to say bye to her.
But she was going to play her match and she had no training yesterday so couldn't make injury worse. So if she was able to play yesterday she will be fine in Athens. There's no reason to worry I think.
Just if this last conference was held, but I guess no since the reason is known

Russia's Myskina Heads for Athens Despite Injury

SOPOT, Poland (Reuters) - French Open tennis champion Anastasia Myskina said she would play at the Athens Olympics despite being forced to pull out of the Polish Open with a rib injury on Saturday.

"My real goal is the Olympics," the Russian world No. 3, who is seeded third at the Games, told a news conference in Sopot.

"It's going to be tough but it was very good preparation for me to play here."

Women's Tennis Association (WTA) spokesman Artur Rolak said Myskina had had to pull out of the Polish Open because of an "acute right rib strain," giving her Czech opponent Klara Koukalova a walkover into the final.

The Olympic tennis tournament begins on Sunday.

"The hard courts in Athens are pretty slow, but I don't see any trouble with the first match," said Myskina, who opens against Spain's Magui Serna.

"The problem may be with my service but baseline and volleys will be my strengths."

The injury I don't know what was that sorry maybe didn't hear well. That would be right the rip because she was holding this on this training but if it says that it's right side why she was pushing on left side? ...

Kamen, realy don't worry about her in Athens, she will be okay, injury is not serious she would even play here if not the rain so she is fine. I think she can win the gold.

This was best week of my life I guess :) I wanted just to see nastya live all the time but I wouldn't expect I will be talking to her. I would say something but better I'll keep to myself :) Just say Nastya is so kind and friendly.

And just one more interesting thingt she said at the conference today.

She joked the most happy moment on court is when she wins a set with her coach :p then seriously that FO.

And she said her europe schedule after USO is Filderstadt and Moscow. If she will need more poits to get to championships she will play something more, if not just these.

Who does Anastasia think she's fooling by saying playing Sopot was good preperation for Athens when she's injured and tired from playing Sopot? And Nastya saying she shouldn't have any problems against a talented and experienced lefty like Maugi Serna is an unecessary comment that could come back to haunt her.

Nastya has an extra day to rest. She's not playing on Sunday, according to the schedule.

the cat, are you sure you know what you are talking about? Nastya never lost to Serna in 4 matches between them. Plus, Serna has been losing left and right lately, so Nastya is absolutely spot on.

Nastyafan
Aug 14th, 2004, 01:53 PM
I think she had in mind she doesn't expect problems with the injury not with Serna, but i hope both

the cat
Aug 14th, 2004, 02:01 PM
Vaiva, did Nastya beat Serna in those 4 matches with an injured shoulder and being tired?

Nastyafan, I think Nastya meant she won't have any problems with Serna in her first match. We shall see.

Epigone
Aug 14th, 2004, 02:23 PM
Just a clarification. I believe that what Nastya meant was that a transition from clay to hardcourt won't be a problem against Serna because Serna is a claycourter herself.

the cat
Aug 14th, 2004, 02:33 PM
Anastasia said "I don't see any trouble with the first match". If I was Serna I would be upset by that comment and I'm sure it's been relayed to her. As for Nastya it's good that she's so confident but now she has to back it up against Serna who will not roll over for Myskina in the Olympics like she has in WTA Tournaments.

I don't have a transcript of the interview, but from what I remember hearing, that comment was made in relation to meeting Serna after coming from the claycourts in Sopot. I think that Nastya meant that she wouldn't be disadvantaged in her first match because she prepared on clay.

Nastya didn't say that she won't have any problem with Serna, only that she won't have a problem with the match, and the first part of her quote suggests that she was referring to a surface change.

cool_olga
Aug 14th, 2004, 03:13 PM
Reiji, Nastya is my dream girl? I am not lesbian :lol; Rafa is my dream boy, Nastya is my idol, she's cool.

Scott, I don't see any reason you should argue about. Nastya really wasn't arogant or something there. The question was about surface and then playing lef-handed player in firsat round. Nastya just said she is not afraid of playing her and changing surface is not so difficult for her. She didn't say anything wrong about Magui.

About schedule, I don't know if she plays Bali, she said Filderstadt and Moscow but the question was just about Europe so I don't know. But Zurich would be better, yeah, but it's different date at all.

Nastyafan
Aug 14th, 2004, 03:16 PM
Thanks for the clarification Epigone. I'm sure that's the case. Nastya has never said any disrespectful words about her opponent. I highly doubt she has even known who is her 1rd. opponent if it hasn't been mentioned there

Ola, if Nadal is your dream guy then you're going to have to compete with Little Masha for Nadal's affections. ;)

And Ola, I read what Anastasia said about Serna and their first round match. Besides me Vaiva knows what Nastya meant with what she said. And that's why Vaiva pointed out that Anastasia owns Serna and has reason to be confident which is why Nastya said "I don't see any trouble with the first match".

deckham, GM is a place where our favorite Russina's will take a pounding because they are popular and likable and most of the posters in GM can't believe the Russina's are for real and are taking over women's tennis.

I guess Sopot wa straining for her, she was struggling so much, wasn;t focused and stuff. now Athens she is 100% That's just awesome to know she is fine. Natsya is going for medal!! It's her easier won match of this year (score). Congrats nastya :yeah:

nastya nastya you've started so well
you've obviously rested, that we can tell.
people are bashing you, they have such a nerve.
they think you were lying, did they not see your serve?

you're now on a roll, you're really on fire.
you're third in the rankings, only now to get higher.
you're playing aggressive and you're playing quite smart.
as accurate as a sniper and as quick as a dart.

done in 45 minutes, so the heat wasn't bad.
doubles might be longer, but only a tad.
you and lena d can win in straight sets,
for i waged that online, i placed all my bets.

but gold is the key and that is your goal.
it's there in your body, it's there in you soul.
you will put yourself above all the rest.
when you play great tennis, you're simply the best.

it's pure jealousy over there.... their skepticism is just that.I saw deckham, you and Spunky are the greatest Nastya's vindicators there:yeah:
I was trying earlier, but lately I understood that there is no use to argue with them They will always find a cause to hate her - her teeth, her photos, her "lack of weapons", now her withdrawing. Do you think they really care about the fans who Nastya "dished" They were actually happy that they found another reason to spit at her, they were happy that she didn't gain points, and now they are frustrated that she isn't really so injured as they would like to be. You give them reasonable arguments but you can't convince them of something they don't wan't to know.
Better leave them alone with their spite. write poems and enjoy Nastya's triumphs :worship:

ATHENS, 16 August - Comments from Anastasia MYSKINA (RUS)

A. MYSKINA/M. Serna

6‑0, 6‑1

An interview with: ANASTASIA MYSKINA

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. Would you have liked a longer match than that after coming from a different tournament?

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: Oh, no, definitely not. Because, I mean, the condition's pretty tough. It's windy and it's really hot. So I don't want to be in the court longer than ‑ I don't know ‑ 40, 45 minutes. The match is pretty good. I'm really happy that it was good end.

Q. Can you talk a little bit about the foot problem, was it the foot problem that caused you to leave Poland early?

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: No, no, my ribs.

Q. Ribs, okay. What was the problem and is it gone?

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: No, it cannot be gone that fast (smiling). So I still have problem but it's not really ‑‑ I mean, it's affect a little bit my serve but not really in this condition. I have a good physio here, so and they treat me well. I hope for the next match I'm gonna be good, ready.

Q. Can you play six matches?

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: Yeah, definitely.

Q. I was wondering if you could comment on the situation of Russian women's tennis, the fact that it's been improving so quickly? Seems to be a whole generation of you, the Russian women had never had a Grand Slam title before this year. Suddenly there are two. What do you think the reasons for that might be?

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: Oh, I think because we have a good competition with each other, like we really push each other like behind the back. So many good girls who wants to be ahead of me, and I know that, so it push me to practice harder and play every tournament for 100%. Definitely for them is the same thing. Like I won a Grand Slam, and next Grand Slam won Maria because she saw that it's possible. And if everybody start believing in themself, then I guess that's the key.

Q. Have you noticed a difference since the French and Wimbledon, not just for yourself but among the Russians? Is there a greater sense of belief now you and Maria have done that?

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: Yeah, definitely. I mean, we are starting ‑‑ definitely we improve our tennis. We start to be more aggressive on the court. We have all kind of players who can serve really well, who can play baseline and serve and hopefully serve and volley. So I think we just improve our tennis. But it helps also because we're not practicing all in Russia. Like Maria practice in US, Petrova is in Holland, Kuznetsova in Spain, so we get something new from different countries, and then we play really good right now.

Q. Are you happy with your hard court form? You did reasonably well in California and Canada.

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: Yeah, I was playing really good in San Diego. It was tough matches. Montreal was pretty good. Yeah, I'm really happy

Lol, these questions about russians must make her nuts, everywhere she is they keeping asking same question :p

Maybe you're right olga, the sopot tourney was a strain on her shoulder and she knew what she needed to do to get better.....
Actually, my opinion was that there's not serious injury and she could finish Sopot with this but when situation with rain appeared and she would have to play 2 matches in one day, that was a problem, then it wouldn't be that good for the rib.

They will always find a cause to hate her - her teeth, her photos, her "lack of weapons", now her withdrawing.
This is just so stupid. Nastya is the nicest player on Tour. Her teeth, what is the reason? Teeth are not important at all Nastya is very cool like she is, now has braces so topic should be closed.

About photos you reminded me nastya's face after one question  This journalist was complete jerk, he had to not know the recent case with those pics. I was so sorry for Nastya :( Maybe later i would tell you about this question and Nastya, poor girl.

Nastyafan
Aug 16th, 2004, 08:11 PM
Yes, that question about Russians is already too banal. But it seems Nastya recites from memory the answer.:p At least they didn't ask about GQ here.
I know Nastya is the nicest and the prettiest player (to me) on tour Ola. But try to persuade these loones in GM:silly:

Nastya plays tomorrow again - second match on court1 (again no CC for Nastya:mad: )
How smart that she was so quick today. It seems all second round matches are tomorrow and the singles final will be on Saturday. No doubles tomorrow, but that means Nastya will have to play 2 matches every day later in the week, when the opponents will be tougher:eek:

cool_olga
Aug 16th, 2004, 08:18 PM
Well the question actually wasn't about GQ, maybe even worse in this situation. Because if about GQ she could just say no comment, this journalist must have not known about this even.

OH congrats Nastya, a win is a win.
But sometimes I think it would be better (to me) one loss than 3 wins like this agains players she should crush.
I wonder what was the difference between yesterday's and today's Nastya. Yesterday Nastya didn't face a break point, today she was broken 5 times and she didn't won a game to 0 or 15. She won 49% of her first serve compared to yesterday's 83%, her second serve was better - 55% I'm afraid her injury has aggravated and she hardly will endure that tough schedule. Unfortunately today I almost lost my hopes about the gold and even a medal:sad: :fiery:

Please Nastya prove me wrong!

I just watched the match in replay…Not impressive... I think Nastya didn’t feel well – the expression on her face, her game showed that…
If it was Molik...Nastya, probably, would lose...
But Nastya showed her mental strength in the very last game when Kristina was serving and leading 40:15…

What surprised me was that Nastya shook hands with Kristina but didn’t shake hands with the umpire…

I knew there is something wrong. But Verba do you think that was some indisposition or her injuries bothered her. If it has been a temporary indisposition there still is a chance she will be better tomorrow, but if it has been an injury there is no big hope.
And why didn't she shake hands with the umpire, were there questionable calls?

I guess it was too hot for Nastya...During the changeovers she put ice on her head...I also heard that yesterday when she played against Serna she massaged her shoulder during the changeovers…
Nastya committed a lot of unforced errors…After some of them she was very angry (at herself, I guess), even screamed… I don’t know whether there were some wrong calls - the quality of my TV isn’t that good and our TV channel didn’t show any replays of the points…
She didn’t shake hands with the umpire but it didn’t look (and it wasn’t) offensive…She shook hands with Kristina then looked at the umpire, raised her hand (as if greeting the umpire) and scurried to her seat…Something was definitely wrong with her today…She didn't look healthy.

Thanks Verba. I forgot to ask you about the serve. Was it too weak, how didn't she win even half of her 1st serve points?
If it's only the heat she can do nothing and the heat is for everyone, but she is obviously tired and maybe injured. Poor Nastya Sopot wii probably ruin your Olympic dreams.
Ys do you think there is a big difference between the temperatures at 10 an 17 o'clock. Usually at 17 is hotter. But doubles definitely won't help her tiredness. Anyway I doubt they will play many matches:sad:

What a tough match. I am proud of her she menaged to win it.
Poor girl I am so sorry for her. She had to be very tired but I wonder with what, she had days off and yesterday was easily.
Thanks a lot for reports Verba, something was wrong with her you say  I hope this is not an injury. But what I am wondering about is what injury it is. Once she says rib and massages shoulder?

I guess it could be heat because she was keepins saying that she didn't want to go to Athens too early because there is too hot and too many people...So probably the whok, athmosphere, weather and stuff made her very tired.

Now doubles, maybe with Lena it will be easier for her.

Yay probably it's destiny.

BTW I'm watching Maggie now and she is playing very well. I hope it will be a long match but it doesn't seem so. If Nastya plays like today I'm afraid she will have hard time tomorrow

Is George a dachshund? Strangely I have always thought it's a bigger dog. I didn't know she travels with him, I have saw Elena's dog but not Nastya's. And haven't they problems with air companies?

I also thought it is big one, saw one pic she was holding but on warsaw site they say she has dachshund so I don't know. Why you think it travels with her? Surely not.

One journalist even kept calling me Anastasia after this thing with signature. It was like, I went to press centre and he saw me and it was like' Hey Anastasia' or I was going home and he' So soon leaving, Anastasia?'. It was making me nuts a bit but was funny.

Nastya has to play much better.

cool_olga

Is it night session? If yes it can just help. Not that hot and more time to rest.

Nastyafan
Aug 17th, 2004, 09:06 PM
So Nastya will play Danilidou (if there will be a match) Her match with Maggie was an incredible drama. At 4-2 30-40 serving,Eleni get an acute cramp in her left hip, she fell on the baseline, she wasn't able to move and it was necessary the trainer to give her help there. Her face was so painful and it seemed she couldn't continue but she did. Mggie broke here and held to level 4-4, but Danilidou held too and at 5-4* 40-30 she had another MP, tried a winner but it was out and she fell in cramp again. The trainer came again but Eleni hadn't right of another break and the umpire warned her but didnt judge a point to Maggie. Showing indescribable pain on her face Eleni got up and in long rallies won the next 2 points and fell again. The public was in extasies.
So if it wasn't a briliant acting (earlier in the match she tried some acts with linesmen) she will be at least much more exhausted than Nastya tomorrow. The bad things will be the public who is even worse than RG and claps loudly at opponents DF and maybe the linesmen. But Nastya still has to win

Ola I didn't read your post carefully, I thought that you have heard the dog

The bad things will be the public who is even worse than RG and claps loudly at opponents DF and maybe the linesmen. But Nastya still has to win That is something I warned you about long before this tournament started, right after seeing the draw. This could be a dreadful match for Anastasia. She has one and only chance - she should never let Eleni into the match. She should never let crowd get going. That's what good players do to Amelie Mauresmo at French in recent years. Not just beat her. Crush her. Shut them up from the very first point.

On a brighter side, it will be a night match, and it opens the way to medal for Nastya.

cool_olga
Aug 17th, 2004, 09:23 PM
Eleni will be exhausted and injuried. Nastya needs easy match now. Crowd will be hard but as ys said she must shut them up with her good play. Night session will just help.

Nastyafan
Aug 17th, 2004, 09:52 PM
Considering Eleni's condition and the fact that in the evening the crowd will be bigger I would prefer a day match.

I'm really worried about Nastya's physical conditions...She looked so tired...Hope, she can find some energy for her doubles match...
I think she is tired, I am no tsurprised after being inb Sopot last week, and now paying matches every single day. I want her to win but sometinhg tells me, she might lose soon. Now that doubles is gone, I wish she can put al lher effort in singles. At leat to maek it to the semis, I hope she beats Eleni in 2 sets, then in the QF i hopse she faces FAbiola much easier than Schiavone.

Good luck Anastasia, keep it going girl and take the Gold............ :bounce: :D :worship:

It's truth Eleni isn't in the best condition after yesterday, but everybody has to remember JHH last year before USO final.
The main thing for Nastya is "to feel" her forehand and to be ready for the wind or Eleni's good tennis.

It seems Nastya will be on CC soon. Unfortunately the previous matches were too quick and the heat still will be too intense. And Nastya hates the heat.
She has to start strong and don't allow the crowd to affect her and linesmen.
I hope yesterday was her critical day and we will see Nastya from last 3 rounds of RG from now on. She shouldn't allow this Olympics to be total disaster for her for Russia and for us her fans.
Good luck Nastya, please win and not like yesterday, please!
