There is a weakness. Steady defense, counterpunching and variety is something Masha doesn't like. I tell you, the first set wlil be very telling. Masha rarely plays someone who will be sitting on her shots which could have been winners against other players. Masha's game is very readable, and no one reads the game among current players better than Nastya. Since Hingis. Hardcourts are like that. If you are quick and can read the game - you are very difficult to beat - the balls will unexpectedly be coming back in numbers.
That was my prediction.. I could quote some other predictions too..;)

Myskina Ends Sharapova's Streak at Acura

By BETH HARRIS, AP Sports Writer

CARLSBAD, Calif. - Anastasia Myskina's savvy paid off in a 7-5, 6-2 victory over the erratic Maria Sharapova in the Acura Classic quarterfinals Friday night that ended Sharapova's 14-match winning streak.

"I'm only 17," said Sharapova, who was visibly subdued and appeared near tears. "When I get to her age, I'll be a lot more experienced player and probably physically stronger. She's been around, she finds a way to win."

Sharapova led 5-2 in the first set when the 23-year-old Myskina reeled off five consecutive games to take the set. Twice in the match, Sharapova was broken on double faults.

"I know there's a lot I can learn from mistakes," she said.

Myskina broke twice to take a 4-0 lead in the second. Sharapova stayed aggressive throughout the 82-minute match, going for shots down the lines that often missed. Sharapova finally held at 4-1 with a 105-mph ace, then broke Myskina on a forehand error.

But Sharapova double-faulted away her service game and Myskina closed out the match with a forehand winner up the line.

"I'm not perfect. There are times you're going to lose," Sharapova said. "A few points I was getting a little frustrated. Her level of play definitely went up."

Sharapova won a Wimbledon (news (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/040729/483/cadp10507292114) - web sites (http://us.rd.yahoo.com/DailyNews/manual/*http://search.yahoo.com/search?fr=web-storylinks&p=Wimbledon)) warmup tournament at Birmingham, then surprised Serena Williams in the All England Club final as part of her winning streak. Myskina improved to 3-0 against Sharapova, with all three wins coming this year.

The Russians clasped hands and traded kisses on each cheek at the net.

"I really respect Maria," said Myskina, who was upset about critical comments attributed to her about Sharapova that appeared in Russian media Friday. "It said I didn't respect her as a tennis player. I think she's a great person."

Myskina said she would apologize to Sharapova. The two often practice together.

"I watched her game the last couple of days and that helped me," Myskina said. "I knew I had to move her around. I changed pace against her. I knew if I kept fighting in some games she was going to break."

Masha was just thinking she is still on grass. But what is winner on grass often comes back on hardcourts. After Nastya started to read her game and Masha no longer could get ball past Nastya, Masha got rattled and started going for too much. You can't do that on hardcourts. She is simply not good on hardcourts yet. Too low margin for error. She improved since last year significantly. It takes now Myskina to do now to her for what last year Loit was enough. Still a long way to go.

Sharapova Falls Apart Myskina The Winner Acura
Special Report From The Match
Frank Riley

What a night it was at the Acura Classic. The biggest match of the tournament and a classic match up. The French Open Champion against the Wimbledon Champion, Anastasia Myskina against Maria Sharapova. The stadium was packed. ESPN and other TV production cameras were all over the stadium, at least 30 photographers including myself were there snapping pictures of both Champions and of course Maria was getting plenty of that.
The match started Maria wearing her now famous white outfit but Anastasia in black. The white queen against the dark queen. Just a thought both players are in fact very sweet and nice people but the colors were so far apart and Maria is a blond, Anastasia with dark hair, it set the stage for what was to be the best Russians in the world in combat.
Maria was like the past matches this week she came out slamming hard fast serves and banging very hard ground strokes. It looked like Anastasia was in trouble as Maria was just over powering Anastasia. I was getting worried that Anastasia would not be able to handle the speed and pace of Maria.
But something was different, Anastasia normally rather easy to get hot headed was calm she did not get upset like I thought would happen. Instead Anastasia was calm.
The games went on and before everyone in the stadium could catch their breath watching Maria bang winner after winner Maria had the lead in the first set 5-2. Let me say that again Maria was winning 5-2, she only needed one game to win that set.
Anastasia came out and just played her game and she started to do better, Maria started to make a few mistakes as she tried to finish the set. Everyone in the stadium could not believe what we were seeing. Anastasia started hitting better, cleaner and error free. Then Anastasia won game after game and the stadium was going crazy as Anastasia came back from being down 5-2, Anastasia came back returning every ball from Maria and Maria making mistakes, hitting long and out. I looked at the score board, it said 5-5. Anastasia had come back and tied the match. Everyone tried to cheer Maria back to form but she had just lost 3 games and it was getting worse the more Maria tried to stop the steady and smart playing of Anastasia.
Then it was 6-5 for Anastasia in the lead, Anastasia was winning and Maria was in shock hitting the ball out all over the place. Anastasia was calm playing her normal steady game. Maria was mentally not okay. Then it happened Anastasia won the first set 7-5. Let me say that again Maria lost the first set, Anstasia came back and won it.
But that is not the worst part of it! Maria in fact lost 9 games after having a 5-2 lead in the first set, in the second set Anastasia was winning 4-0, the rocked and mentally destroyed Maria could only come up with 2 games in the second set as Anastasia was showing Maria how to play tennis. Anastasia did everything right, only a few times getting upset at all, most of the time she was calm and ready. The match had gotten so bad for Maria everyone was cheering trying to get Maria to play better and maybe trying to help her feel better. Everyone there could tell it was horrible for Maria. This was not the way everyone thought it would go, we expected a hard match for Anastasia but it turned out to be a nightmare for Maria Sharapova.
At the end of the match everyone was shocked. I kept saying to myself did that really happen, did Maria just fall apart and let this win go into the crapper like that. I was going to say Anastasia toasted Maria but it was worse than that. Maria was roasted.
After the match Maria grabbed her gear and bag and walked past me only inches away, I have never watch a player leave a stadium so fast, her face was down she looked at no one, but I looked directly into her face only 6 inches away as she went by. Maria was just about to break out crying as she went by, I am sure holding it in until she got to a safe room to let it happen. I really felt so bad for her, but also I felt so good for Anastasia.
I really like both Maria and Anastasia a great deal, but have talked to Anastasia many times and so hoped that she would win but not like that. I wanted to see a good match. What happened was horrible and totally ugly. Even Anastasia did not get to happy at the end and she waited with respect for Maria to leave the court before celebrating with the fans.
It was an ugly night but what we watched Anastasia do was perfect tennis, Anastasia showed everyone her best tennis and why she is the best Russian tennis player in the world and maybe even the best player in the world.

As I drove back to the Hotel I remember how I asked Maria Sharapova how she was able to hit so hard now and how her game got so good at the last press conference at La Costa. Maria looked directly at me and told me in firm words she knew what it took to be the best and she knew how to win. I think to myself at this time, Maria are you sure you know what it takes to be number 1? Are you sure you know how to win Maria, I think Myskina had something better in that department tonight. It looked like Myskina knows how to win Maria. With this horrible night we need to remember that Maria is still a Champion and she has had a good tournament at the 2004 Acura Classic, she was playing against Anastasia Myskina one of the best in the world, Maria do not cry to much you will have your time again I am sure of that.

One more excerpt from the same guy:Anastasia Myskina destroyed Chanda Rubin 6-1, 6-2 and it was not even that close, Myskina almost played with no errors, but still got mad at herself, even smashing a racquet and yelling at her coach. A fan asked for her broken racquet at the end of her match and she gave it to him and signed it, I attempted to purchase it but the guy was a big fan and would not let it go. Anastasia is going to play Maria Sharapova tomorrow at 7:00 California time, in the match to see who is the best Grand Slam Winner right now. Anastasia is struggling but not with her game, she is struggling with her own emotions. She just wants perfection, she broke her racquet with a 4-1 lead in the first set, how could she have been upset she was winningNastya is a perfectionist

Lansdorp was interviewed on ESPN2 last night. He said Maria has a better forehand, better backhand, and a much better serve. He said Myskina is quick, and could frustrate Maria.

It shows how important court coverage is. Plus Nastya is much steadier.

GL I can't believe what are you writing in GM about Masha. Why are you so inconsistent in your opinion? Sometimes Masha is the best ever, other times she isn't top 10 material:confused:

Pfff Nastya a night match again - no TV coverage and 5 a.m. again:fiery:

I think Maria is a tremendous player. So is Nastya, and Nastya has much more experience.

I don't like these new Maria fans who are 14 year old boys having a sex fantasy. That's who I'm insulting.

I want Russians to meet in every major final. Nastya and Maria are 2 of the best. I want them both to keep improving.

Myskina noses out Sharapova

CARLSBAD, California - Maria Sharapova has a Wimbledon championship and much glitz and glamour. Anastasia Myskina is a French Open champion with more experience.

Myskina’s savvy paid off in a 7-5, 6-2 victory over the erratic Sharapova in the Acura Classic quarterfinals on Friday night that ended Sharapova’s 14-match winning streak.

“I’m only 17,” said Sharapova, who was visibly subdued and appeared near tears. “When I get to her age, I’ll be a lot more experienced player and probably physically stronger. She’s been around, she finds a way to win.”

Serena Williams withdrew from the $1.3-million tournament on Friday because of swelling in her left knee, the same one she had operated on a year ago that kept her off the tour for eight months.

In the other quarterfinals, Lindsay Davenport defeated Ai Sugiyama, 6-1, 6-3, and Elena Dementieva defeated Amy Frazier, 6-2, 6-1, in 62 minutes. She and Davenport will meet in one of Saturday’s semifinals at La Costa Resort and Spa, while Myskina faces Vera Zvonareva, who advanced when Williams withdrew.

Sharapova led, 5-2, in the first set when the 23-year-old Myskina reeled off five consecutive games to take the set. Twice in the match, Sharapova was broken on double faults.

“I know there’s a lot I can learn from mistakes,” she said.

“I’m not perfect. There are times you’re going to lose,” Sharapova said. “A few points I was getting a little frustrated. Her level of play definitely went up.”

Sharapova won a Wimbledon warmup tournament at Birmingham, then surprised Serena Williams in the All England Club final as part of her winning streak. Myskina improved to 3-0 against Sharapova, with all three wins coming this year.

The Russians clasped hands and traded kisses on each cheek at the net.

“I really respect Maria,” said Myskina, who was upset about critical comments attributed to her about Sharapova that appeared in Russian media on Friday. “It said I didn’t respect her as a tennis player. I think she’s a great person.” Myskina said she would apologize to Sharapova. The two often practice together. “I watched her game the last couple of days and that helped me,” Myskina said. “I knew I had to move her around. I changed pace against her. I knew if I kept fighting in some games she was going to break.”

Myskina is too much for Sharapova

By Jerry Magee
UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER
July 31, 2004

CARLSBAD – Anastasia Myskina plays tennis the way some baseball old-timers pitch.

She nibbles. She changes speeds. She works the corners. Occasionally, she comes with the hard stuff.

Opposing her can work on another player's mind, as it seemed to do on Maria Sharapova's last night while Myskina was winning 7-5, 6-2 and gaining the semifinals of the Acura Clasic.

Sharapova broke into a 5-2 first-set lead on a cool evening before a sellout crowd of about 6,500 at La Costa Resort and Spa. But the 17-year-old Wimbledon champion, known for her keen focus, seemingly failed to maintain it. Myskina swept the last five games of the opening set and the first four of the second in qualifying to oppose Vera Zvonareva this evening, with the match not to start before 7 o'clock.

The match that had been awaited was the one involving Sharapova and Myskina, the third encounter between them, with Myskina having taken the first two. What had given this match an added dimension was Myskina on Thursday saying Sharapova had been so thoroughly Americanized that it was difficult to accept her as a Russian.

Before accepting questions after her victory, Myskina said Russian newspapers had quoted her as saying she did not respect Sharapova. Myskina said she does respect her younger countrywoman and she apologized for the incident.

On the court, in the beginning Sharapova was the attacker, Myskina the defender. The younger player backed the French Open champion well behind the baseline with her strokes while assuming 4-1 and 5-2 advantages.

Myskina, though, did not crack. It was Sharapova who yielded.

In the crowd was Larry Willens of San Diego, a tennis coach who travels internationally. "In Birmingham, England, I said to Maria, 'You are one of the few people I enjoy watching because you concentrate so well,' " Willens said, "but Myskina broke that down a little bit. She is incredibly intelligent."

She made one adjustment last night that arguably was meaningful. Because Sharapova was working the angles well, she moved in from her station several paces behind the baseline. And Sharapova began erring more frequently.

Sharapova had 45 errors to the winner's 17. The teenager had 22 winners to Myskina's 17, but she also had six double faults to Myskina's three.

Sharapova did make a stand. After Myskina's nine-game run, the Wimbledon queen countered by winning two consecutive games. But Myskina served out the match, dealing Sharapova her first defeat after 14 straight victories.

"Her level of play definitely went up," Sharapova said. "There is no explanation other than that when I had to pick up my level, I didn't pick it up, but I'm only 17. When I get to her age (23), I should be able to do that.

"She's just a great player. She was just better today; there was not much I could do."

Myskina praised Sharapova as "a great player," but said she was confident that if she could remain strong and "keep fighting," her rival would break. "I just played my game," Myskina said. "I knew that at 2-5 the match was not over."

Nastya said this was better than the French Open final. It was unbelievable.
She said when she was down match points, she was thinking about going shopping tomorrow. But she focused on every point.
She said Lindsay is winning everything, so she is going to fight. And try to win a couple of games, at least.
She said she loved it there in San Diego. And she thanked the crowd for their support.

San Diego: The longest final set tiebreak in Tour history was won Saturday night by Anastasia Myskina who outlasted fellow Russian Vera Zvonareva in the third set. After her press conference, Anastasia met Sean Astin, a Hobbit in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, who visited the tournament with his daughter Alexandra.

SAN DIEGO, California, July 31 (Reuters) -

French Open champion Anastasia Myskina saved nine match points to outlast fellow Russian Vera Zvonareva 6-2 6-7 7-6 in a thriller on Saturday to reach the final of the $1.3 million Acura Classic.

"I really wanted to win," Myskina told reporters. "I didn't think how I was going to win, I just fought for every point."

The third seed now meets American Lindsay Davenport, who earlier in the day stormed into her third successive final by overcoming Russia's Elena Dementieva 6-2 6-4.

In a remarkable tussle lasting two hours 28 minutes, the volatile Myskina had to call upon all her reserves to down her Fed Cup team mate.

The match featured frequent outbursts by Myskina, 23, aimed at her coach Jens Erlach. Zvonareva, 19, also twice clubbed balls over the stadium in frustration.

Myskina saved the first match point at 4-5 down in the third set when Zvonareva was wild with a backhand down the line.

The tiebreak in the deciding set see-sawed back and forth, both women coming up with amazing shots at crunch times before Myskina clinched it 17-15. On five of the eight match points she warded off in the tiebreak, Myskina came up with winners, while Zvonareva also had to save four

French Open champion Anastasia Myskina, who last night resisted nine match points against her, including eight in a tense, 32-point third-set tiebreaker, and came away with a 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (17-15) victory over Vera Zvonareva, her Russian countrywoman.

Zvonareva held a 5-2 advantage in the final set. When Myskina broke her to level the set at 5-5, Zvonareva expressed her pique by launching a ball over the La Costa clubhouse.

The tiebreak beginning, the 19-year-old Zvonareva had regained her poise. In it, she sped into a 6-3 lead, setting up the sequence of match points that escaped her.

Zvonareva had four match points against her before Myskina finally collected when her opponent pushed a backhand long. On the preceding point, Myskina had leaped for a high backhand volley – one of tennis' most difficult shots. Her reply tipped the top of the net and fell on the other side, giving her her fifth and conclusive match point.

Said Myskina: "Definitely, that was a little bit of luck. Yeah, I thought I was going to lose. I was controlling the match, and then I lost control of it."

The Myskina-Zvonarova struggle seethed for 2 hours and 28 minutes. Now Myskina must come back with little rest against Davenport, the hottest player on the women's tour. "Yeah, it's not going to be easy," said Myskina, "because I'm still playing tennis in my head."

Acura Classic Myskina Out Last Zvonareva in Long Struggle
Direct from the Acura Classic
July 31, 2004
Frank Riley

What I and many people just watched was one of the most amazing tennis matches in all history. Anastasia Myskina and Vera Zvonareva played a three set match for nearly three hours in what will go down as the best match of this event and one of the best in history. Myskina saved 9 break points, 8 of those in the last tie break for the match. The score was 6-2, 6-7(4), 7-6(15) Myskina winning but that does not tell how exciting this match was.
This match was so emotional and intense that Vera was crying by the third game as Anastasia was destroying her in the first set. It looked like Anastasia would blow Vera out much like she did to Sharapova. In fact the emotional Vera some times held back her tears through out the match but many times she cried and on change overs she covered her red tearing face with a towel.
Anastasia was upset at times but most of the time she was cool and calm. It was clear this tournament that Anastasia has learned to control her emotions keeping a calm and cold face through out the match.
After the first set Vera played better and starting winning taking the second set, but Anastasia had several chances to finish the match in the second set but could not. Vera was playing very well and both players were exchanging great volleys and playing the best tennis I observed at this event. Most of the time after the second set started Anastasia was behind and had to catch up. Each time Vera was ready to win the match Anastasia came back with several winners to stay in the game.
Both the second and third sets ended in tie breaks. The third set went into a tie break that lasted until Vera made a mistake and lost with Anastasia winning the tie break 16 to 15, that is right a 16 point tie break that Anastasia was behind until the last two points. Both Vera and Anastasia had a chance to win the third tie break around 5 and 6 points but could not so it went on both not able to get two points over the other.
Vera was crying and upset about not winning this match, but I will say this clearly, Vera is a Champion in my book, this is the best match I have ever watched and it was a pure pleasure. Both Anastasia and Vera are Champions in many peoples hearts tonight. This was an amazing display of tennis. Vera played an Amazing match, Anastasia played maybe her best match ever as well. All other matches at the Acura Classic in the later rounds have been one sided blow outs. This match was different, it was amazing, it was a real struggle between two amazing tennis players and when it was over we were not cheering and clapping for one person, we were doing it for both of them.
Tomorrow Anastasia will face Lindsay Davenport in the Acura Classic Finals and one will be the Champion, but as I said I think we watched two Champions tonight.

Unachi, Black Mamba!About linesmen there is no conspiracy, they are just biased and support their favourite. And I'm sure Lindsay's acting affected that linesman and maybe umpire to not call that glaring out few points later. Therefore I'm so mad with her behaviour:mad:
But the scheduling of the matches is a pure conspiracy IMO. Do you realy think there is another reason twice to be scheduled all Russian matches in prime time instead of the home-favourite and an American-Russian battle?

And Elena is too polite to say she was robbed.

But indeed Nastya can beat anyone, do it Black Mamba!:yeah:

A huge match is coming for Nastya. Maybe on of hugiest in her career. She was first Russian to win tier 1 and GS, now she can win the first tier 1 title out of Russia - the last not taken bastion and the last argument of Russian haters. She will be the first Russian reached the last step under the very top. The winner here will be most likely the next tennis queen.
I'm excited about this match maybe more than before RG final, because there were playing my 2 best favourites and even in case of Nastya's loss I would have been comforted with the success of my second favourite. But now my first favourite is playing with her biggest rival for #1 spot, and a player I have never liked and since yesterday I simply hate.

commentators said that nastya received a massage right after the match in order to relax herself because she was too wound up and couldn't relax at all..... after the massage she was still tense and that is why she went to the doubles match to watch zvonareva play.... to relax and try to keep her mind off things.... after the match she then was able to relax slightly and then went to bed....
