View Full Version : who's better? capriati or pierce

Nov 5th, 2002, 09:23 PM
two of the biggest power hitters...when they are on....Look out! though pierce has been nagged with injuries last 2 yrs.....she has better stats than capriati....

peirce has 15 titles ( 2 grandslams) and capriati has 13(3 grandslams)
pierce has won more matches than capriati
pierce has beaten both the william sisters more than 2 times
capriati hasnt beaten venus yet
pierce also has more career earnings than capriati
pierce also has been ranked career high #3
capriati ofcourse was a brief #1
pierce has also beaten davenport 3 times...as to capriati's 2!

so what do u think? and i bet pierce will only add to her 15 titles....and end her career with more titles than capriati!

I guess their match in Rome answer the question.... j/k

Jennifer imo

They're close in records, however Capriati has been no.1 and also here 3 slams were around the same time so in a way she "dominated" a little bit. I prefer Pierce, but I have to rank Capriati as higher in terms of "better accomplishements". However in terms of strokes Pierce on her best is incredible. Anyways it's a tie. :)

Mary Pierce! BTW, are you talking about beating the Williams each, or apart? Because Pierce has never beaten the Williams more than two times. Venus leads Mary 5-2 and Serena leads Mary 3-1?

Nov 5th, 2002, 09:46 PM
Last Meeting: Capriati won 6/0 6/0 !!
anyway... I like them both ;)

Nov 5th, 2002, 09:53 PM
In history Cappy will always be better and she deserves to be...

Nov 5th, 2002, 10:11 PM
As much as I like Mary, I think that Jenn is considered the better player. The fact that Jenn has Mary's number also helps her secure her place as more superior.

Nov 5th, 2002, 10:13 PM
Jennifer Capriati

Nov 5th, 2002, 10:33 PM
#1 and the extra Slam

Nov 5th, 2002, 10:41 PM
Based on results one would have to go with Jennifer as she has more slams and at least made No.1, albeit for a very brief time. However, on their best day, I'd go with Mary. We've witnessed Mary annihilate the likes of Serena, Steffi, Monica, Martina Hingis, where said players barely won games...something Jennifer has not done.

Nov 5th, 2002, 10:47 PM
i think pierce has troubled the top players more during her time, so i give the nod to her. she has has two additional grand slam final appearances

i think people are still in a capriati glow. she had a streak of good form lasting 12 months maximum, and nothing else really until we go back to 1993 when her results were not even Henin-like.

Jen is a phenomenol competitor and will go down in history probably as a bigger light. Jen is also probably a better tennis player in terms of thinking about the score and executing at the right time.

But in terms of strokes Mary wins on all cylinders - even forehand - it is a much heavier, and more effortless stroke than Jen's. At her best Mary is one of the best stikers of the ball the game has ever seen.

In Rome Mary basically had glue stuck to her feet! I am looking forward to seeing the new, trim Mary in 2003!

Nov 9th, 2002, 09:05 PM
Pierce is better because Capriati just got lucky with most of her slams because most of the top players were either out injured or out of form. Just look at her pathetic results when everyone is playing well. Peirce actually earned her slams.

Nov 9th, 2002, 10:07 PM
I think Mary Pierce, she has had a sparse career over a deckade, where as Jennifer has been in and out. And she is an accomplished doubles player. Her shot selection is magnificent and when she is playing well she can beat anyone, great serve, great volleyes, she is attractive.

Nov 9th, 2002, 10:11 PM
Mary of course!

Nov 9th, 2002, 10:49 PM
Jenn but Pierce has been a great player too

I love them both...but my vote would be Jennifer. NOt sure what I base this on...but my gut says Jen. Maybe just because Jennifer is a gutsier player. I love Mary but she tends to wuss out a lot. Or so it seems to me. She should have done so much more and something always seems to be wrong. At the end of the day, Jen hangs in there better

Nov 9th, 2002, 11:21 PM
Definitely Jennifer. Both great players but I'm going for the slams plus the #1 ranking in Jen's favour. Plus the fact Jen leads Mary 4-0 in head to head. Mary has never won a set against her.

Nov 10th, 2002, 12:35 AM
I think Mary Pierce is by far the more accomplished player and I would rate her as the better player.

Mary was generally in the Top 10 for the most part of the last decade. She won her Slams 5 years apart(with different generations competing). Mary at her best has had convincing wins over the top players such as her 6-2,6-1 win over Serena, a 6-0,6-0 win over Martina(in 1995 when Hingis was 14), a 6-1,6-1 win over Monica, a 6-2,6-2 win over Steffi and 6-1,6-0 against Aranxta. Remember Family Circle Cup 2000?

Jennifer has won more Slams(3-2) but has reached fewer Slam finals(3-4). Mary has consistently performed at a high level. Jennifer has only done it for 2-3 years of her career.

Right now, I'll have to go with Pierce, because there's Something About Mary.

Results = Jenn

On her best day = Mary

The 3 times that Jenn won were times when Mary was too young and her game hasn't developed or she came back from injuries. Honestly, I think I've seen both at their best and Mary will blow Jenn away. Mary has the potential to blow away her opponents at her best like Graf, Hingis and Serena Williams. Jenn doesn't!

Nov 10th, 2002, 12:44 AM
Jennifer of course....

2 Australian Opens, a French Open, #1 spot in the rankings, and an Olympic Gold medal.

Nov 10th, 2002, 12:56 AM
Mary is better. She has better attitude on court and much better demeanour unlike uncouth Jennifer.

But Jennifer has made it to #1 when the game has reached it's most challenging level so that has to be taken into account and given some credit, but imo, Mary is better overall.

Mary. :)

Nov 10th, 2002, 01:24 AM
LMAO. Honestly, for those who said Pierce is better, are obviously NOT fans of Jennifer or hate her. Any unbiased viewer would definitely put Jennifer ahead. Mary HAS NEVER EVEN WON A SET AGAINST JENN. Plus Jenn has an Olympic gold medal, an extra slam and a 4 to NADA head to head.

It really amazes me, we always have to hear that crap when it comes to Jenn against Venus. But I am surprised when head to head is in Jenn's favor, no one wants to mention it except a fan of Jenn's.

They played only in capriati best years(1992-1993-2002)
if they had played in 1997/1998/1999 or 2000 the head to head would be different for sure...

Nov 10th, 2002, 02:43 AM
Guess what Motta, they didn't play and you can't assume Mary would have won. Shoulda, Woulda, Coulda doesn't cut it.

Nov 10th, 2002, 02:46 AM
Overall I would rank jennifer higher. 3 grand slams is better than 2. I think jen has made more slam semis as well (not sure).

But if each player were at their 100 percent best i would pick Mary. As a matter of fact I would pick Mary at 100 percent over just about anyone.

Too bad she only hit that zone a few times. the best was 1994 French semi over Steffi 6-2, 6-2. I just don't think jen could ever beat Steffi 2 + 2.

Nov 10th, 2002, 03:17 AM
Mary has been a top player for slightly longer total time than Jen, but she doesn't have enough going for her to overcome that extra Slam.

Nov 10th, 2002, 03:24 AM
jennifer, of course! :D

Nov 10th, 2002, 04:53 AM
3 slams more than 2... So definetly Jennifer!

Nov 10th, 2002, 06:42 AM
At their best... Mary hands down!

Overall....even I have to go with Jennifer coz of the extra slam and #1..

Nov 10th, 2002, 06:50 AM
Mary has a great mix of all the fairytale elements.... Style, glamour, troubled past, comeback, fun personality.. something not many players have...

Nov 10th, 2002, 07:02 AM
Even I dislike Jenn, I will put Jenn over Mary. Their H2H record, more slams, world #1, olympic gold, beautiful story... well, isn't it enough?

Nov 10th, 2002, 08:18 AM
Mary was better in her time, when she was on. Jen has won more Grand Slams and reached #1. If Mary had been more consistent she would have had a better career but right now I think Jen's had better accomplishments

I think they are both talented players but Cappy has the edge 'cause she has proven that she has is tougher mentally than Mary and more consistent.

Nov 10th, 2002, 11:12 AM
capriati, after all she did beat mary 6-0 6-0

Venus Forever
Nov 10th, 2002, 03:22 PM
Capriati has an edge.

Nov 10th, 2002, 03:32 PM
This is a tough question. These are Jenn's career titles:
2002 - Australian Open; 2001 - Australian Open, Roland Garros, Charleston; 2000 - Luxembourg; 1999 - Strasbourg, Quebec City; 1993 - Sydney; 1992 - San Diego, Olympics; 1991 - San Diego, Canadian Open; 1990 - Puerto Rico

These are Mary's career titles:
2000 - Roland Garros, Hilton Head; 1999 - Linz; 1998 - Paris Indoors, Amelia Island, Moscow, Luxembourg; 1997 - Italian Open; 1995 - Australian Open, Tokyo [Nichirei]; 1993 - Filderstadt; 1992 - Cesena, Palermo, Puerto Rico; 1991 - Palermo; 1990 - ITF/New Braunfels-USA; 1989 - ITF/York-USA

These are their career win/loss record:
Mary has a little edge in that.

I dunno :o but I like Mary better :D

Nov 10th, 2002, 03:41 PM
I think the 6-0, 6-0 match is overrated. Mary was still coming back from a long injury, wasn't in top form and basically hadn't played in a long time, while Capriati was playing a lot of tennis and basically in peak form.

Also even though Jennifer has 3 slams and Mary 2, Mary has been in more grandslam finals. Anyways it's very close...

When Jennifer gets in a grand slam final, she wins. Jens tougher that way I believe
