I feel so sorry for Na
Chinese Media are always so mean to her
Before her AO final,Chinese Media praised her as the first Chinese enter the GS final, but after her loss, they focus on how she treated the audience and blame for her bad temper.:o
what's worse. After Na's 5 losses in a streak,Chinese Media even faked a news said because of severe knee injury ,Na will retire at the end of this year:help:
It seemed that the Media had a better attitude towards Na after her FO Win.However, some Chinese Media said Li was pregnant:happy:
But after her WO loss, the media blame for her bad temper and exaggerate the negative things she said after interview.
Chinese Media won't miss any chance to challenge Na's temper.I was wondering how the Media in other countries treat their players?

If anyone can deal with it, it is Li Na.

This is why, in the thread about Chinese Tennis Boom, I posted that ,despite the high interest in the sport after Li Na success at AO and RG, the jury is still out whether someone from these inspired girls, will have a break through and be successful like Li Na

To that, I have a chinese friend whose mother believes all this staff.

Bill Clinton was going to run for President again in 2008
Obama will be assasinated in 2009

I think they give a hard time to all of their rich and famous. Obviously our Chinese members know best, but I've heard in the past that they give actresses like Zhang Ziyi and Gong Li a hard time as well.

Because China is not a democratic country, media are controlled by the government. Na Li proves that a man can do something great but government must give him the liberty.

It is just part of the culture. Criticism is a form of encouragement just like how traditional Chinese parents only praise other children but not their own. Chinese media can be assholes but they meant no harm or hate towards Li Na. They just want her to do well because she is the pride of China in the tennis world right now. Take a look at the criticism when Liu Xiang dropped out during the Beijing Olympics. Ouch! Chinese culture has always been country, family, then individual. New generation is more individualistic so they have different views than older generations.
As for Zhang Ziyi and Gong Li situation, is it culture as well. Gong Li was a mistress to Zhang Yimou that ended his marriage and Zhang Ziyi is kind of a gold digger since she only dates rich men so far. There was a rumor she left her boyfriend when she became famous that resulted in his death. These are big taboos in Chinese culture whether you agree with it or not. In Western culture, a sex tape can boost your career in the case of Paris Hilton but in Chinese culture, that can destroy your career like the Edison Chen sex scandal.

Part of the culture and a form of encouragement. May be true. I don't have much background information 'bout chinese culture and it's difficult for a foreigner to judge.
Just like it's still difficult for me to get the etymology of the english phrase "break a leg!" Breaking a leg is a good luck ???
Probably we should separate "normal" media and tabloids. :)

At the same time, chinese are very competitive through their children.
Chinese parents will do anything to get their kid to Ivy league unviserty, just to mention to their friends and family that their kids attend Harvard, Yale, Brown ,Columbia, etc..
One the most popular english expression with chinese grand parents in the USA, (with very limited English) know and use very often is "number one"
This university is "number one", that company is "number one", almost an obssession with ranking, because they see themselves in the success their kids.
It as if they have become "number one" in the eyes of their friends.

The difficulty they have with LI Na is that, they feel she is not willing to give them permission to bask in her glory and and allow China to take ownership of the "number one" spot in the eyes of the world.
They feel she ungrateful and disrespectful to them as a collective, and to China by extension.

Wait, wait, slow down.
Paris Hilton is another business, that of seeking fame by any means.
I don't think sex tape will enhance the career of a tennis player in the USA.

From what I read, it is next to impossible for former pornstars who want to transition to legimate acting.

media is damn BAD in China/HK/Taiwan

Taiwan media is bad yes (who can honestly say their country's media is damn good other than maybe brain-washed Chinese?) however we treat our athletes with the highest regard. Our baseball players playing in the MLB are national heroes, and we defended Yang Shu-chun furiously when she apparently "cheated" in the Asian games. You cannot say we bash our athletes, especially if they are as successful as Li Na. I sense the Chinese media are angry at Li Na because she trashes China to the western media. The media resents that Li Na did not have success until she left the Chinese system.

Hmm,... I thought LI Na had a western coach.
Note she did not namethe coach, because it would have been awkard if she also included her current coach in such a patriotic setting.

Li Na finally said what they wanted to hear.
However, the statement seemed scripted

Li's French title called 'demonstration of superiority of socialism'

Ticker - Wednesday, July 6, 201http://www.tennis.com/images/main/dotted_line_spacer_left_column.gif

After a ceremony that was held in Beijing in her honor for winning Roland Garros, China’s Communist Party-backed Global Times praises Li Na (http://www.tennis.com/players/player_info.aspx?player_name=Na%20Li) for putting a positive face on her country’s type of government. "Li winning the French Open was a showcase of her competitive strength as well as a demonstration of the superiority of socialism with Chinese characteristics under the leadership of the Communist Party of China," the party secretary, Li Hongzhong, was quoted as saying.

The newspaper made the statement even though Li has said that one of the reasons for her rise was that in 2008 she was allowed by the Chinese Tennis Federation to hire her own team and make many of her own decisions. "I want to thank the country, Hubei, my family and all my coaches for their support. I'm willing to dedicate my victory to the country,” Li was quoted as saying by the newspaper.

You are trying to parse words, aren't you?
What Party is he secretary of?
I say he was speaking in the name of the party, not his family.

Did you even read the title in the link you posted? It says "Hubei Province Leaders"
