FYI on Wozniacki playing Bastaad; only did so cause she signed 2 year deal in 09 & unable 2 play in 10 cause Copenhagen moved. Was obligated

Bastad was her "home" tournament at the time before Copenhagen came along...

Yay or nay?

Was this some kind of sponsorship contract?

Why would she have signed a contract with Bastad in 2009 when she already knew then that Copenhagen was being created?

Again, her fault for chasing the money by signing this contract in the first place.

if a player is basically on the top of her/his career, i think its ok. Milking the cow. like Federer had a lifetime contract with Halle, right?

For upcomers and youngsters not so much. If Wozniacki signed up when she was outside top10, i don't think that contract has the same conditions as her current ranking could provide. And this is still just the money aspect, not about the freedom of managing her calendar, etc...

More like she didn't want to return the appearance fee

I don't have a problem with contracts. They help both parties. The tournament can sell more tickets since they can market a certain player and the player makes more money.

If you don't want to be obligated then don't sign the contract. The tournament getting a better deal than when you signed the contract is not a valid reason to break it.

Yes, she played in 2009, so this would apparently satisfy the contract.

One of her stated reasons for playing Bastad was to help promote tennis in the Scandinavian countries. If so, this is an admirable goal, but she has to wonder about the usefulness to her development of playing a clay tournament right after Wimbledon.

With the Olympics next year, who knows what she'll do.
