View Full Version : Serena Williams out of Top 100

It may not be something new or surprising fact. I thought I heard this on ESPN few days ago, but not sure if I heard it right. What I don't understand is Serena's ranking plummeted from 25 to 175. The way I understand ranking system so far is not making sense considering that Serena made it to the 4th round. I am missing something. Can someone enlighten me with WTA ranking system? How does one actually get ranking points and even after grand slam event how each player obtain total points?

She won Wimbledon last year, so she'd lose points.
As for the points you get per round, someone here will enlighten you ;)

She hasn't been able to defend her other points she collected at the start of the year last year.

She's basically ranked now based on how she went at Eastbourne and Wimbledon.

Players rankings are determined on their results over the year, and how well they defend them points in the next year. Serena had a lot of points last year, but lost them all because she was unable to defend them. Her ranking remained high because she held 2000 points from winning last years Wimbledon, but by virtue of only making the fourth round, she lost the rest of them causing the dramatic drop.

Let's hope she doesn't apply for a VIP WC to Montreal. :oh:

Else shit is going to hit the fan!

At the end of the day, does this fact really matters when it comes to Serena Williams?

She would have direct entry for Montreal if she entered. She was ranked #26 at the entry deadline

It looks like she will not need to use a protect ranking to enter WTA tournament for the rest of the year/

as a year-end Top 10 player, Serena will get direct entry to MD at Cincy

by Kevin Fisher (Currently WTA Sr. Manager, Communications & Publications)

Top 10 Player Entry Rules
a. Subject to the Age Eligibility Rule and the Premier 700 and
International Prize Money Policies, a Top 10 Player will be accepted
into the Main Draw of any WTA Tournament entered by the
entry deadline, regardless of her ranking ( Wta rulebook page 13)
