That braid reminding me of 2004. She had to put her hair up to win the third. Halep up next and that should be easier.

The emotion after the win. :sobbing: Crying in her towel after the match and even still emotional in the post-match interview. This really meant a lot to her to be able to compete professionally again especially at a Slam.

When Rezai gets hot and can take a rip at a few balls, she can be deadly. However, her lack of mobility and variety caught up to her by the end.

Serverena is back but she really just needs matches at this point to get back.

No. Serena moves the ball around too much for Bartoli. Even playing passively she can still angle the hell out of Bartoli.

Not to mention Bartoli can't effectively cover Serena's first serve to both corners due to her each.

Congrats to Serena for a successful return, but I am really proud of Aravane for the way she fought on a day and in a circumstance when I wasn't expecting much at all. She really showed a lot of courage given all that she has been through. http://www.vvdrienerlo.nl/smileys/43.gif

What's particularly interesting is that the match stats are almost identical except for the serving, which was a no brainer. Winners were almost level--in fact, until the last couple of games, Aravane led by a couple. Break chances were equal--Serena obviously converted a couple more. But not a lot of players have the firepower and mental strength to go toe to toe with her. I hope someday she can find the serenity in her personal life and a good coach who will harness that immense talent. If so, the sky's the limit.

No. Serena moves the ball around too much for Bartoli. Even playing passively she can still angle the hell out of Bartoli.

Not to mention Bartoli can't effectively cover Serena's first serve to both corners due to her each.

Serena's first serve % was at just over 60% today and even then she was only winning 70% of points on it against a worse returner than Bartoli. That said, she was angling it really well today.

I'm still not convinced by Serena. I know it's a terrible match up for Bartoli but I wouldn't count her out.

She just needs that serve to click and she'll be holding the trophy next weekend. Congrats on the win. Good fight from Rezai.. she shouldn't be too disappointed.

Her movement is under-par too, and most importantly, her focus has been all over the place in her matches so far (understandably, in the context). I'd be very surprised if Serena won it (or even made the semis), but she's earned the right to never be discounted completely.

It was a good performance from Rezai, and hopefully she can use it to push on. She really has the talent to be contending for Slams, never mind the ranking range she's currently in. Good to see her looking like she was enjoying herself too, after the year she's had personally.

To see her so emotional after a victory like that really tells you how much she enjoys playing tennis and how grateful she is to be back in action after going through the toughest layoff of her entire career, due to injuries. Kinda feel for Rezai because she's been through some rough issues herself lately. Hopefully, she'll find her game again, because she's too talented to be ranked 61 in the world.

That kinda shocked me to see her and her son there. Never knew her to like tennis. I'm guessing she was there to support Serena, which is good. Glad to see her at Wimbledon.

Ross has been a fan of tennis for years. She even sang the national anthem the year that Venus and Serena made the finals at the US Open and it was played during prime time.

I don't think Serena impressed Aravane off the ground today, who basically gave the match away in the third.
But the first serve is coming together.

Never seen Serena look so pressed as she did at the start of the third set.

Serena escaped and will be tough to beat from now on.

Escaped???

It was never in doubt in the third set.

Anyway, no one can stop her in the top half if she serves well and gets on form. But if she's on just B+ form, only Wozniacki I feel can dispatch her before the final.

If she's on C form, well, up for grabs.

Serena's tears means trouble for the rest of the tour IMO.
It means she is not taking for granted a single thing with the time she has left in her career and playing like it might be her last time on court.
Before the tournament, I had pencilled her in for an early exit but after this match she is now, in my eyes, the favourite to win.

Serena playing with that mentality is VERY dangerous, regardless of her form.

I just feel for whoever wants to challenger her.

It was very telling that she came back after a year and in her second match she was leading the world number 3. It was only a lack of match play that did her in.

If Serena gets to the second week, she has the trophy I think.

That's really an unfair characterization. Aravane's never had more than a nominal amount of professional level coaching, spending most of her career under the domineering hand of her father. We now are learning how that's turned out.

You don't win four WTA titles in fifteen months or beat the high level of players she's beaten by being "brainless".

On the other hand, posts such as yours are often made by being brainless. Capiche?

Recognizing another sista with such a drive motivated my daughter to accomplish far more than other kids her age.
In short, Serena helped me by serving as an example of feminine determination while under immense fire from her environment. And how one can succeed despite the many, many, many, adversities she faced. :)

"If you believe in yourself, you just continue to fight and never give up. I always preach, you know, Never give up, never give up. I finally was in a position that I could have gave up, I couldn't have came here, I could have sat home and said, I've had a fabulous career. I don't have to work extra, extra hard now.
