Poor JJ, she's going to be even lower ranked than Ana if she keeps playing this way...

It's possible she'll be ranked lower at the end of this tournament, isn't it?

I don't think this result is too surprising. Martinez Sanchez really should do a lot better on grass than she does, and I don't think Jankovic even played a grasscourt warm-up, did she?

I don't think she should retire, but if she really isn't enjoying herself, maybe taking a few months off wouldn't be the worst idea. When players take a break, they often get a sense of perspective and realise how lucky they are to do what they do and come back more hungry (Williams sisters, Maria, Clijsters).

Not so fast. Ana is going for the 3rd leg of the 1R Calender Slam. She almost has the 1R-Ana slam but she slipped up and got to the 4th Round at the USO.

I am not a fan of Janka but her (or Ana's losses) aren't even laughable. It's beyond pathetic how far both have fallen.

I've just checked and Ana will have to reach the Quarter Finals at Wimbledon in order to overtake JJ.

Not playing any tune-up events. preparing for the grass GS in Belgrade (?!), and yeah, she had a great time in the theater, in Istanbul, and at the Wimbledon party! the result is expected! not one word in the last couple of months about the tennis, the improvement, the training, the coach. just fashion, theater, and enjoying time off court... JJ somehow stopped caring about tennis. she didn't care during the clay season, even less on grass. who knows what's next...

Really though, I think she should take some time off. She seems disinterested, which while not good for anyone, is especially bad for someone with a game like her's. Take a year off to refuel, rebuild your passion for tennis, and you'll come back strong with another 3~ish years to become a top player again. Because honestly right now she's not fooling anyone, and she really DID have a great game and personality to watch when she cared.

Nothing against Jelena, but I'm thrilled with this result. MJMS played wonderfully well, with fewer errors than I have seen her make in a long time. Maybe Pepa's best match since Rome 2010.

Next round will be Mariajo vs Monica. That will be something quite special and lot of fun for those of us who like their tennis a bit wacky and unorthodox.

It's true, I really think she should do this too. Especially when she is talking about 'feeling old' and so forth. She is not old but one can feel very old when the desire and the passion is lost. She should indeed take some time off to refuel and rebuild her passion. Maybe we should write her an open letter?

I remember seeing MJMS play against Venus on grass a couple of years ago and she's very enjoyable to watch on the surface. Lots of S&V. I hope she played that way.

Nice result. :)

Jelena is a such a mess anymore. She doesn't even play the same game as she did when she was at her best. She's slower and her groundstrokes are too erratic to play her old game, it's worrying for her future.

Martinez Sanchez :worship:

I really enjoy watching Martinez Sanchez play, she has an interesting game. I've always thought that tennis players should come to the net more, especially in the women's game, where the ball isn't hit as hard and they're not as good, so they're more likely to miss the pass. Today she served well, didn't play many drop shots, played her approach shots well (mostly) and stayed calm on her volleys (mostly). And surprisingly hit quite a few winners returning serve. There were a lot of points were she seemed to play three or four shots standing between the service line and the baseline, no-woman's land, but still won the point. Very entertaining. I'm not sure if I like her tennis because of her game in itself, or just because its different to way nearly everyone else plays. If everyone else played like Martinez Sanchez, I would probably get excited about two ball bashers whacking it out from the baseline.

I might like her tennis because I find it interesting and entertaining, but on commentary they said she hasn't won back-to-back matches all year. So I don't know if I can call her tennis, "good tennis", because by definition "good tennis" wins matches.

Peace, Skankovic.

I'd have thought more Williams fans would actually respect one of the few who has actually challenged them consistently, apparently not :o

We couldn't get through 1 slam without a serb losing 1r. Jelena :( Do whatever it takes to refresh yourself.

MJMS' game is quite cool actually. I just...can't watch her though. I really don't object to many grunts but hers is just painful. They really remind me of years ago when my Mother had chronic migraines. She used to moan with the pain, and that's exactly what MJMS grunt sounds like. :help:

It's a shame. I used to love watching her play. She had an excellent return game just two short years ago. She played some great tennis during her U.S. Open run in 2008 before being derailed by the Serena Express and she was even competitive in that match. With that being said, it would appear she is either done or needs a long break from tennis.
