Did Norma Baylon take up South African nationality - I thought she was Argentinian?

Any list which places Ann Jones as the #1 British player must be A-okay!!

Wow what a fascinating study! It also highlights how amazing those champions who came from countries where no other real champions came from esp Maria Bueno, What a freak (I mean that as the ultimate compliment)!

And didn't CZECHOSLOVAKIA have some talented stars! And South Africa in the 60s.

Of course a special mention to Lenglen and Durr from France :)

Baylon was Argentine.

Some people are tough to classify, but I think if you are going with Navratilova as Czech perhaps Molla Mallory could be/should be listed under Norway. She played two Olympic games representing Norway (1912 and, significantly, 1924) and was not officially American until some time after she moved to the US.

At any rate it's a great list Computer.

The criteria for getting on the list are what?

To get on the list you have to be in the top 1000 players according to my All Time Ranking List Yes, I've amended Norma Baylon thanks

I'm pretty sure Computer lists his criteria in his other massive ranking thread. Clearly a ton of work went into this.

Great read Graham:)

While I have a sec here's some help:

NETHERLANDS

Madzy Rollin Couquerque (first name Madzy)

CZECHOSLOVAKIA

26 Maria Neumanova
39 Marie Pinterova

These two are the same person.

GERMANY

11 Sylvia Jung-Jung was French. She =Sylvia Lafaurie and Sylvia Henrotin

17 Marianne Werdel Wittmeyer-I always thought Marianne was American.

GREAT BRITAIN

94 D Kemmis Betty
120 Mrs John Hill

These two are one and the same. Her first name was Dorothy.

All such lists are essentially arbitrary and subjective and, therefore, cannot be "accurate."

... married names too can be very confusing.

That's why we have the married names thread. http://www.tennisforum.com/showthread.php?t=423653

Out of curiosity, are the national rankings really some sort of rankings? Or a listing of players by country, in an approximate order?

I had a hard time following the rationale for the U.S. rankings, for one. Hart ahead of Serena? Davenport 4 spots above Connolly? Casals ahead of Austin? And for Russia, Morozova only #9?

Didn't quite understand why Navratilova was in the Czechoslovakia rankings, with both Czech and Slovak players. And that Yugoslavia would include players who never represented Yugoslavia.

PS - Ines Gorrochategui was from Argentina, not Romania
PPS - Anne Kremer, a top 50 player at one time, represented Luxemborg (even though she has lived in the US). Didn't see her on the list.

Is Rodionova representing Australia now? She played for Russia before.

Other notable players I didn't see:

Katerina Srebotnik (Slovenian, but s/b in Yugoslavia)
Claudia Montiero (Brazil)
Pam Whytcross (Australia)
Rika Hiraki (Japan)

These are my rankings which you can see if you look up the thread.

Serena Williams is not finished as a player so will get more points whereas Hart has completed her career.

Maureen Connolly only competed for approximately 4 years so it was impossible for her to gain the points and ranking she deserved in the all-time list.

Similarly Tracy Austin played only 5 or 6 years at the top due to injury.

Thanks for the other information which I will look at shortly.

OK. Interesting system. Reminds of the current WTA ranking system, which rewards quality over quantity. For example, Connolly won 4 majors in one year, which is more than Davenport earned in her entire career! Yes, Lindsay had a longer career. But a Grand Slam, plus 5 other majors, rates less than Lindsay Davenport? Hmmm

Doris Hart, a wonderful player, won 6 majors in singles. Serena has won 13, to date. Twice as many majors, and Serena ranks behind Hart?

Rosie Casals never won a singles major, and won 10 pro singles titles, to Austin's 30 (including 2 majors, and 2 season ending championships).

Unless doubles is factored in, I'll never understand why in a sport like tennis, a rating system should reward quantity over quality.

I take your point ‘quality over quantity’ sounds reasonable – but it’s not that simple.

How much quality and how much quantity and what proportional reward are all factors.

How far do we exalt the slams over normal tournaments? 1x 4x 10x 20x etc? - I went for 6 times on average.

What period of quality? Dan Maskell said while watching Virginia Wade playing Nancy Richey that Wade was playing the best tennis he had ever seen – she lost the match.

The best year makes the best champion? The best 3 years – the best 10 years or the best 20 years?

Would we apply this say to parenthood – oh she was a fantastic mom for a year, but not so good after that ?

Quantity has to count for something – is 4 slams in one year better than 22 slams in a career?

Longevity helps but what REALLY counts is having an extremely successful or if you like quality long career.

I agree that majors are the cream of tennis but other tournament successes should be rewarded proportionately, don’t you think – we cant say all those other wonderful tournaments like the Italian open, Key Biscayne, Indian Wells etc count for next to nothing.

Actually I think my rankings are quite rightly – slam biased (worth on average 6 times a normal tournament)

Misfortune cost Austin, Connolly and Seles a better ranking – unfortunately luck plays a part in the grand scheme of things.

Incidentally, speaking of quality where would you place Suzanne Lenglen who only lost once (due to illness probably) in her career? Navratilova for example lost 200 times!!

I think it’s a little harsh to say I’m rewarding quantity over quality – I would say I’m rewarding highly consistent long-term quality over short term brilliance.

You can rank players according to whatever system you want and my system follows the simple rule that each success should be rewarded proportionally.

That's precisely why your ranking system is arbitrary and subjective. You chose 12 instead of 11 or 13 or some other number based on your personal opinion about how much more valuable Grand Slam tournaments are versus other tournaments.

Subjective maybe-but no more subjective than today's computer rankings. They are hardly aritrary.

Am still curious as to the criteria for getting on the list.
Seems a bit weighted toward American and British players.
I confess there are so many names that weren't even remotely familiar to me. And if a system based on longevity was used, I must really be ignorant of a good portion of tennis excellence.
I am also aware of a number of women who did rank in the top 100 in the Open era, not from the US or Britain, who aren't on the list.
And I assume that it's birth country, not the nation represented in Fed Cup or Olympics that determines nationality.
Navratilova under Czechoslovakia, not US
Srebotnik (who I did find under Czechoslovakia) even though she is Slovenian.
Smashnova under Russia even though she represented Israel

I believe that a total points scheme like yours definitely emphasizes quantity over quality. There's no way that Amy Frazier would have gotten such a high US ranking under a quality-based ranking scheme. From Wikipedia:
She debuted in 1987 and was active player until the 2006 US Open in which she made her 20th consecutive appearance (a record among active players). She has also appeared in 18 Australian Open, 18 Wimbledon, and 15 French Open for a total of 71 Grand Slam appearances (also a record).

Her best showing is a pair of quarterfinal appearances at the 1992 Australian Open and 1995 US Open. She has lost 30 times in the first round of her Grand Slam matches, 18 times in the second round, 15 times in the third round, 6 times in the 4th round, and both of her quarterfinal matches. Her all time Grand Slam record is 73–71. Had you done some sort of average (per tournament played or even per year), quality would have gotten more emphasis.

Nothing in life is.

What period of quality? Dan Maskell said while watching Virginia Wade playing Nancy Richey that Wade was playing the best tennis he had ever seen – she lost the match.

That's an interesting comment. But I don't know how it relates to a ranking system rewarding long-term consistency over short term brilliance.

The best year makes the best champion? The best 3 years – the best 10 years or the best 20 years?

Would we apply this say to parenthood – oh she was a fantastic mom for a year, but not so good after that ?

I don't know how that is relevant to a tennis ranking system that rewards long-term consistency over short term brilliance.

Quantity has to count for something – is 4 slams in one year better than 22 slams in a career?

Well, there's never been a player who has only won 4 majors in one year. Although Steffi Graf did win 4 majors in one year and 22 in her career.

It has nothing to do with having a long career – what counts is having a successful or quality long career.

Well, I would say Maureen Connolly had a very successful career. Circumstances meant it was much shorter than she thought it would be. But pretty darn successful nonetheless.

I agree that majors are the cream of tennis but other tournament successes should be rewarded proportionately, don’t you think – we cant say all those other wonderful tournaments like the Italian open, Key Biscayne, Indian Wells etc count for next to nothing.

The vast majority of the players on your list never played Indian Wells or Key Biscayne.

Actually I think my rankings are quite rightly – slam biased (worth on average 12 times a normal tournament)

But are ALL the majors counted equally? Such as the 1976-1978 French Championships? The Australian 1977-1979? The Australian pre-1960? The French before it was open to players not from France?

I agree that Maureen Connolly was a better player than Doris Hart and Austin a better player than Casals but it was misfortune that cost them a better ranking – unfortunately luck plays a part in the grand scheme of things.
Connolly a better player than Hart, and winner of more of the majors than Hart....but ranked lower, simply because she played less often. Doesn't seem logical to me.

I think it’s a little harsh to say I’m rewarding quantity over quality – I would say I’m rewarding consistent long-term quality over short term brilliance.
I think Denis you can rank players according to different systems obviously - I went as I say for the long-term consistent quality - but a system which took the best 5 years say would also come up with an interesting ranking system - you could do it! At a guess I would say - the top 5 would be Lenglen, Connolly, Wills, Navratilova and Graf - maybe - its hard to predict?!?

Graham

Anyone can devise whatever ranking system they want, with whatever premium they want. I just will say it defies a certain amount of credibility (not the effort to produce) but the system itself when the net result says Maureen Connolly is the 12th best ever from the U.S.

As a point of comparison, Steve Flink, one of the foremost authorities on the sport, ranked Connolly #7 all-time. Seventh all time. Yet you only have Maureen #12 in the US. And with Court, Lenglen, Graf, Navratilova not in the US rankings, it means you consider Connolly barely in the top 20 of all-time greats.
Sorry, but I don't think there would be many folks who would concur.

I want to point that, in Paraguar players, it's Rossan de los Ríos, not Rosano. And in Mexico players, it's Angélica, not Angelika. :wavey:

Viktoria Azarenka (BLR),Tatiana Golovin (FRA), Lucie Safarova (CZE) - !!!, Kaia Kanepi(EST), Alona Bondarenko (UKR), Kateryna Bondarenko (UKR), Iroda Tulyagonva (UZB), Tina Pisnik (SLO) - !!!, Olga Govortsova (BLR), Julia Vakulenko (UKR), Olga Barabanschikova (BLR) never represented neither Russia nor Soviet Union.

I'm wondering what sick twist of mind put Safarova and Pisnik on this list.
Others - OK, they are from countries, formerly included in the Soviet Union.
Golovin maybe born in Russia (although her parents moved to France when she was 2 yo or something). But Pisnik?
