I was looking at the tournament calendar for this year, and I was surprised to see that after Wimbledon, there are two weeks of clay tournaments. Is this normal? Why do they do it like this?

Actually, it's pretty normal and last year there were even 3 weeks of clay MMs in a row!
I guess the WTA wants to bridge the time between Wimbledon and the US Open Series with some smaller events for lower ranked players to gain some points or clay specialists who don't have the quality to dictate the big clay tournaments in spring to have a good run here and there, while most top players are already preparing on hard.
The ATP has an even longer clay series after Wimbledon, by the way! :)

It's been like this for ages. (I mean 2 or more weeks on clay after Wimbledon)
For some people here, that's their favroite part of the season
