Acetina McHale :cheer:

0-40 in that last game, and gutted it out with some great serves.

And props to ESPN for staying with it till the end.

Nice solid and steady effort to get the win by Christina. From what little I saw, that was more impressive than I expected. :yeah:

Three terrific first serves to save 3 BPs in that last game.
Plus, she has a great defensive game.

So proud of her! I knew this was going to be a tough 3 setter. Great to see after the French disappointment on a surface that clearly isn't her best finding a way to fight it out.

Jun 20th, 2011, 03:33 PM
Makarova played Birmingham, Eastbourne & Wimbledon, and in total won one match this grass season.
Terrible year after a championship at Eastbourne in 2010. Thats the difference when you have expectations from when you're a nobody on a hot streak.

Makarova once again proved to be a loser when it comes to nerves
So what were her wins over Ivanovic and Petrova at the AO? It didn't come to nerves there?

On the other end, Christina was jeered here after blowing that 5-0 lead over Errani at RG. As I said at the time, that was a learning experience, and it didn't take her long to put it into good use on (at least) an equally big stage. :yeah:

Thats an upset.
Very surprising.

Makarowa won Eastbourne last year, seemed to be really good on grass and lost in Wimbledon 2010 early just because her opponent was Venus Williams.

I really don't understand this result.

Has anybody seen the match?
What happened after this first set 6-1?

Simply put, McHale started playing better all around, Makarova got passive, thought it was going to be easy in the 2nd, and then both players actually held steady in the third until that 6 game, where Makarova got tight a bit and McHale just wasn't going to lose today.

Plus, McHale came back from 0-40 down up 7-6 and won five straight points.

Wow. This is a very impressive upset for McHale :worship: As I've said before, I think she's the most talented of the young American girls (which granted isn't saying much, but still!) Hopefully she can keep going for a few more rounds and maybe beat Schiavone and Petkovic :)

Like someone else mentioned Xtina finally wins a marathon-ish type of match! I remember the first time she was on the scene was that Australian Open 1st round vs Jess Moore of Australia and ended up losing from cramps(?).
Interesting seeing how many wins she has over familiar "name" players
