First into 2nd round!

Kimiko was getting tight towards the end though.
Tons of breaks in the second set.

Most likely Venus next.

Lawd. O'Brien is so abysmal. She should just retire and become a florist or something. The AELTC needs to STOP handing out the wildcards like free lunch to scrubs like O'Brien because it is such a horrific display for British tennis. I say the media needs to come down on the useless and irrelevant Brits on a grander scale this year :wavey:

Congrats, very well done.
She will be a tough opponent for five-time champion.

Kimiko :yeah:

Never makes it easy for herself but she got the job done in the end.

Lost first round here last year, so this is good for her.

DidnŽt see this thunderous first set (17 minutes with break) but the second was competetive, however OŽBrien wasted every single chance she had (twice 30-0 on serve I believe)...at least some sign of fight from 3-5 and MP.

Well at least the second set was competitive after the pitiful 1st set.

This was a Bye for Kimiko. Nice start in any case.

Not sure how Katie merits a WC year after year. It's really just charity, isn't it?

So they give a wildcard to Brits ranked inside the top 250 automatically? They really need to look into that because someone like Katie has been given chances year after year, and she doesn't seem to be going anywhere.

O'Brien was atrocious in that 1st set! Was it 5 points she won overall? It was embarrasingly one-sided.

Kimiko to her credit played very well at 1st, and her flat ground-strokes combined with good volleying meant O'Brien was consistently off the pace and making wild errors.

Her form dipped though in the 2nd set, and O'Brien managed to improve somewhat. Date got noticeably tight and dumped quite a few FH in the net and it looked as if O'Brien might be able to sneak the 2nd set once Date got broke at 5*-4. But Kimiko played a good game at 5-5 and it was NID after that.

Finally, OK draw for Kimiko.
(I won't say lucky draw, having Venus on 2R)

I hope the next match's gonna held in the center court. :bounce:
If so, it's so heart warming, since it's from 96 SF with Graff.

Katie. No one expected a win so these rude and disrespectful comments are not needed. She's a good tennis player- been top 100, she's in very bad form at the moment and it's a shame she was in this dip of form when Wimbledon came around. She's a fighter and showed this in previous matches at Wimbledon and IMO her performance against Bondarenko last year secured her WC this year.

well done on the win, though, Kimiko ! :worship: fastest/first player to win a match of this year's edition, feels good for former semifinalist here :yeah:

I think I checked the stats at 5-0 and she 'already' had like 11 points IIRC .. still, it went really fast  17 minutes , I checked the score , some other matches were going 1-0 and Kimiko already had delivered the bagel

Hope she doesn't retire, she's so much better than this. Needs to gain confidence back on the challenger tour

Highlight of the match was definitely the hawk eye in second set when Date challenged and her own shot called out and it was probably 10cm before the line:spit:

I'm sorry for that old man, but it was clearly in.
Also there were few more wrong calls supporting Katie
but it's her country and afterall Kimiko won.

No need to read any further after a crazy comment like that.

After reaching 84 in the world rankings and accumulating just under $500,000 in prize money over a span of under 7 years, she's hardly had a bad career. I'm guessing this is the only match of hers which you have watched and therefore have no right to say she's a rubbish tennis player- after all she's professional and achieved a lot more than most players.

According to the stats on the website she won 6 points overall, 4 points on serve, 2 on return. :tape:

TBH O'Brien has done well to reach Top 100 with an ordinary game. Apart from the occasional good FH, she doesn't have much weaponary, and is not the greatest athlete out there by any imagination. It was apparent quite early on in her career (I remember her throwing a match away against Garbin at Wimbledon in 2006) that she was probably gonna fall into the traditional Brit career of challenger events with the British grass season. At least O'Brien can say she reached Top 100 and won a couple of slam matches, something many Brits on her skill level haven't. Having said that, and after hearing she is not enjoying tennis, retirement is nearing if the results stay the same.
