This match wasn't televised, was it? I'm very interested to know the nature of Vika's injury.

I guess this means that Marion is a lock to win. Vika has retired three times prior to this and each time the player she retired against went on to win the tournament (Caroline in Indian Wells, Julia in Stuttgart and Maria in Rome).

Vika.

Marion did beat her, just cause Azarenka couldn't finish the match doesn't take away from Marion's performance - it's like saying Henin's retirement effected Mauresmo's performance when she won the Aussi Open with a similar scoreline in Amelie's favour.

Exactly - just because Azarenka is too sour to actually finish the match and go down with dignity, that shouldn't take away from Bartoli's victory. No doubt Azarenka's injury will miraculously heal over the next few days and she'll be ready to go at Wimbledon on Monday.

On another note - yet another tournament that's turned into a complete MESS. All the top 4 seeds out before the semis (assuming Zvonareva is about to go out).

Bartoli retired 6 times in 2009  Funnily enough, 2 of her retirements were against Rezai and Razzano after losing the first set  So I would say Bartoli is just as bad if not even worse. And as people already say, Marion's RG was apparently in serious danger after retiring in the Strasbourg final just a few weeks ago.

In Vika's retirements this year, she's gotten injured mid-match.

Have they said what the "injury" was yet? I think there should be some regulation that if a player retires due to injury a WTA physician needs to see the player immediately and send a report in. There has to be some way to stop players from thinking they can do this all the time. It's ridiculous!

dsanders06

Each and every time Azarenka has retired this year, she's been back on the match court within 10 days. After retiring in Indian Wells, she was there to play her first match in Miami the next Friday (and healthy enough to win the title). After retiring in Stuttgart, she was ready to play in Madrid just over a week later (and healthy enough to make the final). After retiring in Rome, she was ready to play at RG just over a week later (and healthy enough to make the quarters). If you can recover that easily, you're not so seriously injured that you need to retire. Pathetic. Who's seriously going to bet on her having to w/d from Wimbledon?

They were all precautionary, that explains why she was fit enough to make the next tournament again. In every match that you stated there she had a coaching time out with Sumyk who told her to be wise and retire before making it worse. If anything it is very wise from her that she's prioritising her health (she didn't always use to do that) because otherwise she would worsen her injuries and people wouldn't even get the chance to watch her play IN THE FIRST PLACE.

No, sorry, you only retire from a match if you're physically unable to carry on, you don't just do it if you've got a blister or your shoulder's aching a little bit. In any case, how exactly would it have worsened her health to have just stood there and given a token effort for 4 more games and let Bartoli win? She's very lucky she hasn't been hit by a fine yet - I remember a few years ago the ATP fined Davydenko for "lack of best effort" when he retired from a match before playing another a few days later.

Azarenka's actions make her look classless and a bitter sore loser, as well as making the sport look like a joke.

According to WTATour, she retired with a right groin strain, and if my memory is correct, that is the same injury that fucked her over during 2010 clay season.

She's being precautionary. The one time she wasn't precautionary, she ended up collapsing on court with a concussion and had to be taken to the hospital. But if she had pulled out 5 minutes before that match had begun, she would have been damned for running away.

It's sucks, because she's damned either way.

Just stood there and given a token effort? Do you think that would be better? Hitting some half-arsed shots, not even trying/caring and waiting till the match is over? She would be critised for that as well, either way.

If it's true she had a groin strain, how would that have impaired anything but her movement? I fail to see how it would've been impossible for her to just serve and hit groundstrokes and try and limit her movement for a few more games. And simple question: how come pretty much every other player manages to complete their matches, and for most players, when they do take the exceptional step of retiring, they're usually out for a few weeks atleast?

You have an injury, you retire. It's as simple as that...:

No, it's not, actually. It's in the WTA rulebook that any match retirement that is deemed unprofessional or not wholly necessary or damaging to the sport will lead to the player being fined and/or suspended from the Tour (though of course they're never going to enforce this for the top players).

But to look at it from another angle... What if every other WTA player retired from a match because they felt "something" or just wanted to take "precautionary" measures.. Seriously???? Can you even imagine if every player in the Top 100 retired 4 times this year, because something didn't feel right or they were a little sore?? Gimme a frickin break!!! These are elite athletes, and elite athletes compete with aches & pains ALL THE TIME, its the nature of sport!

All the top 4 seeds out before the semis (assuming Zvonareva is about to go out).

if i were Marion i would be happy to play one less set and instead be getting a massage and a pizza

It's a double edged sword. Venus was badly injured near the end of Wimbledon 2003, but she toughed it out and played. It arguably wrecked the remainder of her career, despite the various success she has had since.

But at the same time people respect that she gave it her all and fought, despite being injured. It's why she is considered classy. What Azarenka is doing isn't at all.

As I've said before, Azarenka is an INJURY BASKET CASE !!! Unless someone gets in her head and untangles whatever is in there, she will be history very soon, or at least an easy match for her opponent. Very troubling...

So basically, Azarenka threw a strop because she got called for a foot-fault, and decided she couldn't be arsed hanging about to lose. Classy :worship: The Eastbourne crowd never boos unless they're really being annoying... and it indicates they didn't think she was seriously injured either.

Azarenka is already a millionaire. The fact that she retires everytime she has a little something is really disrespectful for the crowd and the wta. She's an egotistical selfish bitch by doing so. I mean you either give it your all or you tank a la Serena. You just don't retire at every single tournament and make it to the final the next week like she did when she retired in Stuttgart but made it to the final in Madrid. Seeriously she seems like a nice girl but this kind of behaviour is a no-no. The wta should have rules about that.

Retired qualifiers shouldn't be allowed to become LLs. Give the LL to the highest ranked loser who didn't retire instead.

The crowd were definitely pro-Bartoli from the start though that may have something to do with how long Vika took to get to court - though Bartoli didn't help her there as she showed up a few seconds after being called, before Kvitova had left court actually.

Vika looked sluggish from the start though she didn't come over as obviously injured - certainly not like in the final last year when she was clearly having knee problems from the off. However there were a few times where she didn't run for balls I would have expected her to so that could have been due to injury. Bartoli also hit an unusual number of aces past her that she didn't really react to.

In the first set Azarenka had two horrible line calls in a row called against her on the baseline - my mate and I were sitting right on the baseline and Bartoli's shots were clearly out - which is when she swore very loudly and was warned and that line judge was moved.

The foot fault was very funny - Vika gave the guy a real death glare, we were right behind him so saw it in all its glory. I didn't hear any booing, our part of the crowd all burst out laughing and were hushed by the umpire. When she left the court she didn't get a particularly warm response though.

Scroll back earlier in the thread, someone has her retirements listed. From 2006-present there were 19 listed.

I remember when she wanted to retire in the Eastbourne final last year but her coach told her to finish. :o Such a hot mess. She really needs a good physio because she is going to get nowhere at this level of conditioning.
