View Full Version : Grass is always green on Kiri's lawn

Bye bye red dirt, hello green/yellowish grass! :)

Looks like Kiri is taking next week off.
Then its UNICEF Open, ’s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands and Wimbledon.

What results will make Kiri fans happy?

Remix13
Jun 6th, 2011, 07:05 AM
If she doesn't lose against player ranked below her I would be quite happy :)

At least 1/4 in 's-Hertogenbosch, 1/2 would be great.

At least 1/16 in Wimbledon to defend her points. 1/8 would be a good performance, I really hope Maria could do this, the draw will be determinant. Anything better and Maria would be a tennis goddess in my eyes (is she already one ?) :worship:

First time I watched Kiri in Rosmalen she lost to Cirstea.
Then beat Olaru and lost to Flipkens.
So I'd say QF this year!

I think the fast pace grass courts give Kiri less time to retrieve balls.
Kiri does have a good volleys and net play. Perhaps serve and volley could be her secret weapon at Wimbledon. ;)

is that why Kiri was practicing them at Rome?

It was horrible but i'm not mad at her, she just hates grass and without a real coach, it's hard to know what to do. She wanted to try to go to the net as often as she could but it wasn't the solution as she was the better player from the baseline. I just hope that it will not make her lose her confidence after a good Roland Garros.

I actually think that's a big part of it. There have been many great grass court players in the past- Sampras, Federer- and Maria unconsciously tries to emulate them. Unfortunately for her, these players have certain skill sets that Maria lacks, which make their games work on the grass. For instance, Sampras had a huge and precise serve- both first and second- and could also pick up volleys and halfvolleys with ease from his shoelaces. Other great net players were very good at covering the net- Rafter and Becker- or had phenomenally accurate volleys- Edberg. This group of players- and Federer- slice their bhs very well.

Unfortunately Maria doesn't have a very big serve. So that makes it much harder to start with. She is actually not too bad with volleys, unfortunately covering the net in singles requires a special skill set which includes anticipation and a very quick first step, as well as the hands to improvise volleys in awkward position. Think Jana Novotna. Or, in modern tennis, I guess MJMS is the closest. Also, like most two handed players, Maria is much better with the topspin than the slice. When Maria started slicing her fh as well as the bh I knew she was losing today.

The other thing is that Kimiko can do a lot of these things well. She is comfortable volleying, slicing, serve and volleying. So Maria was drawn into playing her game.

Maria needs someone to tell her that she needs to play her own game, even on grass, with only small adjustments.

However, let's not take anything away from Kimiko. She clearly understands how to play on grass, and her game is suitable for fast surfaces anyway.

Luos
Jun 13th, 2011, 11:50 AM
Kimiko's game is well-suited to grass as everyone has said but she had no confidence whatsoever coming into the match (7 losses in a row, struggling to get any wins this on tour this year) and it showed in the first set at times in my opinion but Maria still insisted on giving it away with her gameplan of coming into the net to initiate something, rather than just moving forward to finish off any weak replies. I thought Kimiko looked fairly shaky at times in the standard baseline to baseline rallies and made a few errors but she hardly missed a passing shot all day and she's deadly in the midcourt.

Maria even got passed 3 or 4 times in a row near the end of the tiebreak from what I remember, so yeah ... :tape::lol:

Good points well made Howard. I just think that because she's uncomfortable on grass she tries to implement some generic grass game of serving and volleying, getting to net etc etc and everyone here knows how that goes by now. With the way grass plays nowadays she'd probably do better just playing the way she does on hard courts imo. She might never be good on grass but her game is adaptable enough for her results to be better than they are...

Yes her normal game is quite versatile I think and sufficient to win some matches on grass and most of the other players are not comfortable on grass either. It's obvious that when she is trying to play a "classic" grass tennis, it's a terrible fail :( (Quasi-constant Serve & volley with her serve is suicide anyway...).

I hope she will play HER game at Wimbledon, with a normal draw she really could win at least 1 or 2 matches ;)

Today it was really a caricature of how to badly immitate a grass player  :tape:

cosmoose

my theory, without any proof, is that Vika pulled out of doubles late to concentrate on singles only.
That left Maria searching for doubles partners late and all the good players were taken.

That's indeed surprising. I don't like these changes, it went just great in doubles. I wish Maria would concentrate more on singles as well. It isn't a good year at all. The good draw at RG helped, but she also need good wins.
She must bring more in the hardcourt season to end this year in the top 30 again. With the QF at AO and R4 at RG last year I hoped for a steady top 20 rank but that's so far away now.

Brianti is a pusher, so not the best for Maria but she has only won 1 match in 3 years at Wimbledon...2nd round against Shvedova would be tougher as she has a good serve but she's playing quite badly this year.Anyway, i don't see Maria in round 3 but a win would be good.

DAVAJ MKirilenko
Jun 17th, 2011, 10:05 AM
I guess Maria can better draw Brianti then Date.
Wickmayer easily beat Brianti this week and it's not that Yanina is playing great.
Shvedova is playing terrible for a long time. Hopefully Maria can defend her points but it will be tough.

Brianti tries to play like Henin too much which isn't always effective, her serve can be dangerous when she is on a role, but hopefully kiri will have a good service game in this match because its vital that she does.

I'm a bit confused. Is it the old court 18? Can't see any rain coming and they can probably play past 9.00pm tonight so she should be okay.

Nalbandion has won so surely Maria should be on court soon? I'm not even sure they've got tv cameras on court 19. Nothing on the BBC website or on the TV. Could try the Wimbledon website.

I agree with her about Maria. We all know that she can do better than her actual results. If Maria enters the court without believing in her game, then she has 0 chance to win the match. But if she believes in herself, and gives everything she can, then she's able to compete with Serena. Maybe she will lose finally, but she will have her chances.

It's up to Maria. She has all the keys to fight in this match.

I think she played well. With a different draw she might have gone further.

To win a match you need to be able to break and thats almost impossible if you always get two aces when you are up 15:0 or 30:15. From what I have seen so far (which is not much, but still) I think Serena is the favorite ones more. Let's hope for better draw in the next slams, preferably at the AO or Roland Garros.

Maria tried her best but what do you want to do against an opponent like that. She tried everything but she's lacking of power,so it was impossible to win easy points. To win a point, she had to fight really hard when Serena only needed one shot...I'm happy about her performance hoping that she'll manage to win some matches with Igor(who wasted a big chance to go far on this tournament in singles)

I was just looking at the rankings, and Maria should be moving up a few spots since she held her R3 points.

Reaching top 24 before US Open could be a good objective (avoiding [1-8] in the draw if I remember the rules correctly).

Her held in Wimbly will help but she needs to do well on summer hardcourts. It should be OK hopefully ;)

In next weeks rankings she could move up to 24, if Serena does not win and Venus does not make the semis. Though She does have a ton of points to defend before the US Open.

Yeah, disappointing day :(.

I still think she played well against Serena, but Serena also played a good match, so the outcome is normal I think. Nevertheless I had some hope before the match, so can not be happy with this. And doubles, well Julia isn't exactly a specialist, so also bad luck with this...

Let's hope for the best in mixed, I think she has a good partner :DYou can't be happy with Maria's routine loss to Serena Williams yesterday and Maria's fan can't be happy with that loss and Maria's only winning 5 games but is Maria happy with the result? I would imagine she's okay with it and therein lies the major problem in Makrii's under achieving career. Maria may well be satisfied with having a nice tennis career. But she could be doing so much more results wise. Makiri played fairly well against Serena but Serena played well and served well and her great numbers in the match were clearly too much for Maria to overcome. Serena kept her pinned behind the baseline most of the match and wore her down and overpowered Kirilenko as well. But I was pleased with the compliments Chris Evert gave Maria's game during the match on ESPN2. Evert said Maria had a fine all around game and moved beautifully on court and Evert couldn't understand why she hasn't done better in her career. I agree with Evert and so does Lindsay Davenport who broke down Maria and Serena's match in a detailed preview which I have copy and pasted below. Davenport like Evert knows Kirilenko has real tennis talent and is a fine all around player but she like Evert and many other tennis experts doesn't understand why Maria isn't better than she is. Davenport thinks Maria doesn't want it enough. She may be right. Here are her interesting pre - match comments on Kirilenko / Williams.

Davenport on Williams v Kirilenko

http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/53681000/jpg/_53681878_venus464.jpg Serena Williams is battling to regain form after her long spell out of the game

Reigning Wimbledon ladies' singles champion Serena Williams faces a third-round match against 27th seed Maria Kirilenko on Saturday.
Four-time winner Williams is battling to find her best form again after being out of the game for a year following foot surgery and suffering life-threatening blood clots.
Kirilenko has five WTA titles to her name, but the Russian has failed to build on the potential she showed as a junior and has had a poor 2011 so far.
Lindsay Davenport, who faced both players during her career, analyses where the match could be won or lost and the respective strengths and weaknesses of both players.

WHO IS MARIA KIRILENKO?
Maria Kirilenko is a real enigma. It's so funny, she is one of those players that I scratch my head about and don't know why she has not done better than she has.
The Russian enjoyed her best performance at a grand slam at the Australian Open in 2010, when she reached the quarter-finals.
http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/shared/img/o.gifMARIA KIRILENKO
http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/53682000/jpg/_53682542_kirilenko66.jpg
Age: 24
Nationality: Russian
Turned pro: 2002
World ranking: 27
Highest ranking: 18 (July 2008)
ATP singles titles: 5 (9 in doubles)
Career prize money won: $3,800,414
Boyfriend is world number 79 Igor Andreev

Her Wimbledon record, though, is derisory and in seven visits to Wimbledon she has made it past the first round just three times.
It's puzzling, she has a great all-round game and if you see her on the practice courts she absolutely rips the ball.
The problem for her is when she gets on the match court she tends to be much more passive, she gets really tentative and then she doesn't have a weapon to hurt the big players with.

CURRENT FORM AND WIMBLEDON PEDIGREE?
WILLIAMS
I don't actually think she has been playing that badly. She has lost a couple of sets but the strokes are there and the timing is there. It is just a case of getting on the court more and returning more, and starting to move a little bit more like she used to before injury.
As for her pedigree, she has won four Wimbledon titles and is the defending champion.
KIRILENKO
After a terrible start to the year, she has defied that form to have two routine straight sets victories thus far, but in seven visits to Wimbledon she has gone out in the first round four times.
She grew up and moves well on clay so she has done well at the French Open but she should be better on grass than she is. She has the game but she starts not going for her shots despite being able to volley well. Watch on Saturday to see what I mean, it's crazy I don't get it.

WHAT IS THE KEY SHOT FOR BOTH PLAYERS?
WILLIAMS
Serena's serve is the best serve in the history of women's tennis. Simple as that.
KIRILENKO
Because of the monster serve Serena possesses it has to be how good her return is.

WHAT WEAKNESSES DO THEY HAVE IN THEIR GAMES?
WILLIAMS
Right now, Serena is a little short of that first step. To expect her to come back and play at the same level that she did when she won here last year, though, would be putting unfair expectations on her.
http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/shared/img/o.gif
She [Kirilenko] is going to be really hard pressed to try and create anything due to that lack of power to her game

LINDSAY DAVENPORT

KIRILENKO
She has a lack of power against the big hitters in pretty much every aspect of her game. She just starts massaging balls around the court and you can't do that against players that can step in.
Her all around game is very good, she has a good serve, good looking strokes, but she is going to be really hard pressed to try and create anything due to that lack of power to her game.

HOW IS THEIR FITNESS AND MOVEMENT?
WILLIAMS
Unsurprisingly, Serena's reactions seem a split second slower than what we are used to seeing from her - but that will come back with more matches.

http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/shared/img/o.gifS WILLIAMS v KIRILENKO HEAD-TO-HEAD
Three meetings (Two clay, one hard)
Williams 3 wins, Kirilenko 0 wins

KIRILENKO
Kirilenko is one of the fittest players out there. She moves so well but she needs to try and move forward a bit better. She likes to move around the baseline yet she is a good volleyer so she should be coming forward.

HOW MENTALITY STRONG ARE THEY ON COURT?
WILLIAMS
Serena has fought through such a lot his year and she is a different person now than that she was 12 months ago when she won here. She is one of the best competitors, along with Steffi Graf, that women's tennis has ever seen.
KIRILENKO
Kirilenko's struggle is believing that she can close it out against the top players. I don't think she believes she can do it against the very best.
She beat Maria Sharapova in the first round of the Australian Open last year but she hasn't built on that result. She just sometimes seems too satisfied when she gets to play those types of players.

WHAT IS YOUR VERDICT?
Serena has lost a set in both her opening matches and has lost her way a bit in both games. Despite that, you get the sense the more she is around, the more she practises, the more she plays, her game is going to click pretty soon.
I'm going for Serena in straight sets.

Oh the irony by two posters on page 5

I'm supposed to leave some positive fan comment or such
Lets hope Maria reaches a few QF's on the US Open lead up tourneys. If she does she could find herself in the top 20 by years end without alot to defend till Roland Garros

Its a shame they lost the mixed dubs today. But on a good not, Maria should move up to 24 since the Williams sisters lost today.

I can't remember seeing Maria play a doubles match and not smile like today. She's usually always smiling. Hope she plays with Nenad again as they are constantly smiling and they play really well together.

You can't be happy with Maria's routine loss to Serena Williams yesterday and Maria's fan can't be happy with that loss and Maria's only winning 5 games but is Maria happy with the result?

Maybe I formulated it inaccurate. Its just that the loss was more routine (as you said) than I hoped. But of course thats just sport, sometimes there is just a stronger player and thats it, of course I can accept that. But still not happy about it ;)

The mixed result is bad, didn't see that coming. Maybe I shouldn't have said that I like the draw... :(

Oh I just realized that Wimbledon 2011 was Maria's 30th Grand Slam participation in a row (from RG2004 she entered all GS events). Congrats Maria :worship:

Hopefully this serie will continue for years and years :D
