Tournament director Worcester undergoes surgery for breast cancer

New Haven tournament director Anne Worcester has been diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent successful surgery last week, tournament officials announced. The cancer was said to be caught at an early stage.

New Haven spokesperson Matt Van Tuinen said that Worcester, who was formerly the CEO of the WTA Tour, is on the road to recovery and expects to work this year's tournament, which will take place Aug. 18-27 at the Connecticut Tennis Center at Yale. Worcester has run the tournament for the past 14 years.

The tournament also announced that No.1 Caroline Woznaciki will return to defend her title. Wozniacki has won the event three times and will attempt to tie record holder Venus Williams (http://www.tennis.com/players/player_info.aspx?player_name=Venus+Williams) with four crowns. It is unusual for top-ranked players to compete in the week before a major, but Wozniacki considers the tournament to a bit of a good luck charm and has always played well at the U.S. Open the following week.ŚMatthew Cronin
