Though it sucks the way she lost to Cibulkova, it wasn't that bad.
She fought hard and showed that she really had chances to win even she was trailing all the way.
Next time please do better at those crucial games/points Maria.

Today's loss is similar to the losses to Wozniacki at Indian Wells and Azarenka at Miami in that Maria lost more service games than winning. One glaring stat today is that she only won 49% of her first serves.

I'm sure Maria will continue to improve her serves and she will go deep in any tournaments if she wins at least 70% of her first serves.

The last time maria played in here is 3 years ago. It¡¯s the sadending 4 GOATPOVA. She had some injuries problem, defeated cilbukova, schynyder in 3, wozniacki in 2 and retired in SF Again jelena.
Maria played 3 times in here and 2 times reach SF in 05 and 08.
So hopefully she will have a good run in here this year.

Not when the first serves are like 95 - 100 m/h

I agree. She needs to have a faster first serve and make it an effective "first strike" weapon.

Maria averaged around 110 miles/h when she won her slam titles. She can't do that now with the surgery but she needs to be better than 95-100 m/h.

are you aware that the highest serve speed and the highest average speed for both first & second serve Maria achieved AFTER the surgery?
The serve speed reduction has nothing to do with the surgery or with the shoulder.

I don't have official stats by after her surgery she still served pretty damn hard. Look at some of the matches last year, the speed is as high as it was before—possibly even harder. It's pretty up and down so we'll see, but one of the reasons she hit so many DFs last year was because she was averaging about 95mph on second serves.. crazy.

Arrived today in Rome a few days too early, but what a nice city. We are having major hotel issues but should be resolved soon. Don’t you hate when websites false advertise? These hotels spend all their money on a fancy website then you arrive at the hotel and you’re like, this is not the same hotel I just saw on line?” Back to the practice court tomorrow!!!!

Her potential R2 opponents are the shit thing about this draw. It's never nice to play the same player (in this case Makarova) two weeks in a row because there's a chance that player can catch you off guard and beat you.
Then there's the defending champion in the form of MJMS, whose game I believe will trouble Maria a HELL OF A LOT if she plays well.

Peer, Kleybanova and Jovanovski are not worrisome IMO it's just the R2 match that will be tough to get through.

Facing MJMS would be a good test to see if Maria is in good enough form to get the first strike, if she does then Mariajo won't be able to oppress her game style on Maria. Serving well would come in handy too.

All I'm saying is, she could easily come out and routine MJMS 6-3 6-3, lose to her by the same scoreline, or beat her 75 in the third. Especially with that serve, which is inconsistent as hell, and if she's facing decent-to-good servers, she can't keep relying on that return, which just isn't what it used to be even if it's more reliable than her serve.

Not to even talk about different matches, even within a match, she could be broken to love in one service game and then hold serve at love in the next.

Platitudinous comments about the Rome Draw:

The Bottom Half of the Draw seems a little weak. It's a great opportunity for Sam or Fran to get hot before RG - Provided, of course, that Sveta doesn't decide she actually wants to play tennis in Rome...

The 1st Quarter of the Draw is again anchored by The Woz and JJ. And, again, there's gorgeous Goerges in JJ's Section poised to Do Unto JJ and The Woz, again, in the QF and SF. Should be a thrill.

Isn't it grand to see Pova once more anchoring one end of a Quarter in a Premier Five Draw! That little fact represents a tremendous effort on her part and she should be very proud of it.

Peer anchors the other end of Pova's Section of the Draw. Peer has choked up and frozen solid ever since an opportunity to get into the Top 10 was on her racquet. No thaw in Rome, BoJo will take her out!

Each Pova match is exciting on so many levels, but her biggest match in Rome in terms of MOJO will be the QF v Vika, unless Bye takes Vika out...

Rome could be a really good tournament!

The problem is, we have no idea which Maria will turn up each match these days.

Will she serve 10+ doubles? Will her return game suck? Will she hit 50+ unforced errors? Is her movement slow? Is her shot selection terrible?

Usually one of these is combined with a part of her game that works really well.

For instance, her serve isn't working but her groundgame is, her return game sucks but she is holding easily. When all of those stay away we are in for one ugly match.

Good thing 'Fighterpova' will always show up though, even if it is just briefly, or lately way too late.

I hope Maria can play her first service game in the first set better; otherwise she is down 3-0 or 4-0 and and pretty soon it's too late.

However, Maria has been playing much better this year compared to same time last year and I'm hopeful that she'll go deep at both FO and Wimbledon.

It's Madrid, Rafa's always had problems there. On top of that Novak is having an amazing year and still is undefeated.

I mean Rafa could have definitely won IW or Miami but Novak is really confident now and well no one has been able to stop him this year.

If there's one place for Rafa to do it, it's on clay and I believe he actually might have beaten Nole it's on a court like Monte Carlo - but who knows Nole really has improved a lot.

This, Roger beat him and Nole almost in 2009 here. He lost even a set last year to Almagro.
I don't want to make excuses, of course this is the best Novak's season and he's playing amazing, but those courts are not close to Rome or RG. They're really fast. When I watched some matches during this week I felt like Miami and IW were slower than this. And Petra's win is another proof of that.

Congrats to Nole, but I don't like he stop Rafa's streak on clay. :(

Yeah I agree, ever since they changed Madrid to clay courts I just hate it now. Maybe it's not so much about the speed of the court, but the altitude which causes problems for players, like Rafa.

It's ridiculous Miami did look slower than the Madrid courts

Peer or Kleybanova hmm, both haven't been playing their best tennis,so Claypova should get either of them in 2.Provided she plays like she did today.

Kleybs is probably more dangerous, but she can also lose to just about anyone. :tape: I don't think either of them like clay so hopefully it will be straight forward.

I can't imagine how much confidence Maria would get from winning Rome. I really hope she can do it or at least go far...

Both could be tough, both could be easy. It depends on both her opponents and which Maria will show up that day.

At 6-0 3-1. JJ v Lucie has gone longer than Masha's match last night.

But if JJ wins easily today. Masha 6-1 6-1 and then JJ. PERFECT. Unlike last week.
