“I lost my career at 23 … but people don’t give up. People don’t understand that my career got stopped because of an injury,” the 6-1, 156-pound San Diego product said. “My goal is the top 100 (this year), then the top 10.”

Yeah there were some threads about that, she even said that she wants to win a slam.

WTA will definitely die when she will retire.

Hmmm somehow I'm pretty sure that McHale and Mattek-Sands (who beat her 6-2 6-1 last week) are just a bit better.

I feel quite sorry for her. I don't think she comes across as being particularly likeable and I won't pretend I'll be the first to join any "Yeah Alexandra!!!!" topic (I'm sure she'd feel the same way about me, heh, if I were in her position blah blah blah) but I do feel quite sorry for her. I don't know, I guess I have this kind of image of her sitting in front of her Wimbledon 1999 press cuttings with one single tear rolling down her cheek. It's obviously tough to have something so big at such a young age and then, bang, oblivion, no one cares, goodbye. I'm not a fan but I wish her well...

I knew when I saw her make that run at Wimbledon that she was a huge fluke. She really doesnt have the talent of even a top 50 player, never mind a top 10 player. Add to that she is lazy, fat, has a crazy mom, and old, and little surprise she isnt even a top 200 player at this point.

Stevenson was a legit top 30 player talent wise before the injury. Even if it was mostly serve-based.

"Because, in my mind, I want it back the way it used to be. I remember all my old Wimbledons, and I even remember a young Rafael Nadal as a junior player, staring me down. It was 2002, and junior players are not allowed to practice at Aorangi, the practice site. Well, a young Nadal, who was playing juniors at Wimbledon, walked down to my practice court that year, which was in the back, and he pressed his face against the gate, watching me hit. It was in the day when I worried about who was around my court because of all the press and the father issues, so I asked my mom to go see who was at the gate. She did. She said to the young boy at the gate, "You are Nadal, the player who is supposed to be a great champion one day." I kid you not. She said that. She invited him in. He said, in broken English, "No, no, I watch her. Semifinals at Wimbledon." And he smiled. It seems he wanted to see the girl who had made history"

Her indoor wins against Capriati didn't mean much as Capriati had issues playing indoor (I think she needed eye chirurgy or something).

I don't think wanting to be top 10 back then was silly (she had a solid serve and could have improved her game), but there were just too many factors going against her, from her injuries to her crazy mom.

At this point she should just shut up and play as making fun of her is not even funny anymore.

I didn’t answer this poll because I didn’t find a reasonable answer out of these three choices provided by the opener:

I don’t think it’s a good idea to compare Alexandra to Caro: While Caro’s career is straightforward Alexandra’s best and only Top 20 season goes back into 2002. As her career high was # 18, I don’t expect her to grab a Top 10 spot.
Looking at her # 250 ranking it sounds logical that she should play ITF-tournaments instead of WTA-Qualies. However, in 220K Memphis she used the chance as a LL and won her MD match against Sofia Arvidsson 63 61. I didn’t opt for this answer because I don’t like this undertone (“where you belong”).
IMO it’s up to a player if and when she will retire. A year ago Charles Bricker answered his question When will Alexandra Stevenson call it a career? ( http://www.worldtennismagazine.com/archives/1987) but missed out her Top 20 season in 2002. If it works out for Alexandra (financially) she should continue to play. Although I know the answer, this puzzles me much more: Why does part of the media cover her career again and again and don't reflect on this unworkable goals?

I stopped rooting for Alex ages ago but I guess I still always have that glimmer of hope she would finally do something successful with her career.

I think the comments here are overly harsh but then again, Alex has brought a lot of this on herself, a lot in part due to her mother.

Still, I'd rather see her have goals so let her have her fun I say. Besides, we are not talking about Brie Whitehead but a former top-twenty player and Wimbledon semifinalist.

There's no doubt that this is the best she's played since coming back from shoulder surgery. She's even winning matches on clay, but I'm still not sure if she can get back to the top 100. That being said, I think she's still capable of qualifying for a Slam and winning a round or two.
