Venus Williams Set For A May Return At Brussels
By Tripp Mateschitz, Lawn Tennis Analyst, Posted: Tuesday, April 5, 2011 11:49am PST USA
BRUSSELS-- Sidelined since January due to injury, the former WTA Tour world number one Venus Williams of the USA, is set to rejoin the WTA Tour May 14th in Brussels, Belgium.
Williams, who this week saw her WTA Tour singles rankings fall from 15 to 9, has competed in only six WTA Tour tournaments in the past 52 weeks: the four grand slams plus clay court tournaments last May in Rome and Madrid.

The WTA Tour lists Williams’ total number of tournaments as 14 due to 8 mandatory tournaments which Williams missed, but was awarded zero total points for each

That's really late :scared: seems strange to skip the mandatory in Madrid just two weeks before where she made the final last year. It will be good to have you back though Vee :):yeah:.

Incredibly, that will make Brussels Venus Williams' 1st WTA event (The Grand Slams being ITF events) in more than a year.

The article doesn't say whether she'll play in Madrid or Rome so maybe it's still possible that she will play there. Regardless, it's good to see she's entered Brussels to get some match practice.

Venus will be ranked in the 20s during Roland Garros. Nothing to lose.

Vee has decided to not defend her Madrid final... she'll now slide down to the 25-30s... I wonder if she'll now win RG ranked so as she has never been abled to do it with better rankings... suspense.

The only time she has attempted to win the FO while being ranked beyond the top 20 (27 to be exact) she lost in the 3rd round in 2007... will history strike twice...

Now (though not official) she would have played
Roland Garros-Wimbledon-US Open-Melbourne
and then Brussels

She should skip Brussels imo!!!

If Venus chooses to play in Madrid, it's a much more competitive draw, so she is likely to draw a seed as early as the second round. In Brussels, the draw should be a little more open, which means she will get more match play under her belt in time for RG.

This could be a very good draw to comeback to IMO.

I hope she would not be too hasty. It is clay season combines with injury hiatus, so I did not expect it will be such comeback, but at least I expect she would be in completely health. Well, so I will be looking forward to seeing another "Vee" dress in few weeks, I guess.

Smart move by Venus: she'll be avoiding Clijsters, who will skip Brussels and head straight to Paris, after Rome.

But Vee better be ready for tough action cuz many of the other elite/top contenders (or at least top on clay) will be there in BXL: Caro, Bepa, Schiavone, JJ...

nevetssllim
Apr 8th, 2011, 07:30 AM
I'm not really concerned about her ranking falling towards the 20s because she'll always be a danger but I just hope she comes back when she's ready and doesn't rush back to the tour.

Ranking does not matter, I think it's a smart move to play Brussels, reminds me of the days she played Warsaw and made the quarters at RG. Rome + Madrid never really help her chances at RG

Are you sure the writer knew she entered both Madrid and Rome before? I mean it's probably goint to happen that she will play just Brussels, but afterall it is the week just after Rome and 2 after Madrid so that wouldn't make that difference. And she could play them all to have more matches under her belt!

Brussels... that's random. Especially this early on! Why not just say madrid as she is scheduled to play?? Unless this is the most optimistic she can be and she actually isnt coming back until Wimbledon...

Venus likes to play in Belgium :oh:

Pretty huge field for Brussels, especially considering its status and its position on the calendar. I am sure many players will eventually withdraw (perhaps depending on their results in other clay events), but even if only half of the announced top players show up it is still a very good field.

Yup thats all that matters to me. Certainly not expecting anything from Vee coming back after 9+ months and playing only 2 tournaments on clay. Wish Venus cud have came back for Rome/Madrid but she obviously still wont be ready by that time.

Really can't wait anymore to see sisters on the court. They are much better than any active player (except Kim). I simpy enjoy to watch them. The feeling when i watch them playing is so different than watching any other player. (Except Ana i Jelena, coz they are from my country)

She will definitely be a dangerous floater in the RG draw.

She is on the bubble for being a floater. If she doesn't play anything until the french, she will have 1840 points. Right now, that would put her 32nd in the world.

She will definitely be a dangerous floater in the RG draw.

I doubt it will be dangerous as her aura would suggest.

Brussels is not certain yet; entering into RG she will be in very questionable form. Her aim should be on the grass (and perhaps later on the hard courts). She doesn't have a lot of chances left. I'd rather she take it slowly, take it safely, until she finds her form, and make a run at Wimbly.

Best of luck.
