Oh my, what a performance from Maria :oh:, it was a bit wobbly in the end though  Poor Andrea, she was literally brain dead in that 3rd set, no idea what to do and turning on the tears when things aren't going her way, much like when she first started playing  Love how the injury magically healed at 0-5  Win it all Maria!!

Those last 2 sets were FANTASTIC! She got tight a bit to close the match, her shots were not as clean but still amazing stuffs! Her serves seemed more effective as well. :hearts: Good luck in final! Keep that level up please!!

Good adjustment by Martha especially given her faux brainless ballbasher label.

I was going to give Petkovic credit for this week as I didn't think she would even beat Karolina in R16. She played well enough in the first, but her shitty stroke production showed itself again. She did make the top 20(something I thought she wouldn't), but the 2nd and 3rd set exposed all her weaknesses. In a few more months, everyone will be onto them.

Well played by Sharapova, but OMG, she is so annoying with her grunting.:( Hope Vera beats Azarenka, since otherwise the level of noise would be just unbearable.

The second set has to be one of the longest / tightest 6:0 sets ever, since Andrea had game / break points (if I am not mistaken) in all or almost all games. Then in the third set her game just fell apart, especially her forehand.

MARIA :worship: Upped her game in the 2nd and 3rd sets. VERY tight closing it out, but well at least she did. Now please get the title. I was always hoping she'd win Miami one day, that's one of the few big titles she's missing. Hopefully won't be like the other 2 finals.

Who was the guy in the end with radioactive shorts? No wonder Kim tanked to Azarenka.

Petkovic's footwork and movement went to hell during 2nd set, she barely tried in the 3rd, Sharapova graciously let her win couple of games in the end. Dunno if the problem was physical or mental...

That was awesome. Bit disappointed Petko didn't play well today, but getting this far in a huge tournament is a big step for her, so hopefully she takes a lot of positives from it and uses it to build upon her game and her future. MaSha was outstanding in the 2nd and 3rd set. She got a bit tight in the last couple of games, but she found a way to finish Andrea off and I am very proud of her for battling her way into the Sony Ericsson final, after a couple of long, brutal matches. Congrats Maria and good luck in the final. Better luck next time Andrea!!! Proud of you both! :bounce:

pathetic from Petkovic, for me injured or not she quit out because of not handling her nerves, its her Serbian/Bosnian heritage because this thing is typical in the past of ppl like Tipsarevic, Djokovic and Jankovic

Sharapova ballbashing like a maniac and the wind kept half her shots in, lets see her do that in Final against a far better oppponent

Good win for Maria. :clap2: She did a good job of making some adjustments after the first set. The second set was vintage Maria. Of course Maria did give me a scare toward the end, but thankfully she was able to close out the match. I`m really happy to see Maria getting a big win like this and making it to the final.

Great Job Maria !
Hope she'll face Zvonareva in the finals.
A Sharapova/Zvonareva is always cool because they got two totally different game styles.
In add, if Azarenka loses to Vera and that Maria Sharapova wins this title, she'll be in the top 8 !
Great news when we know she got almost no points to defend until Strasbourg.

Please just STFU about Caroline Wozniacki, y'all are ruining Maria's victory.

What so great about her victory against Petkovic? Wasn´t she the far higher ranked player and favorite of the match? If Maria beats Wozniacki, Zvonareva or (well-playing) Kim, now that would be exciting.

dude, she demolished and burried WTA Nr.5 a couple of rounds before...would you say that win was as good as this one against an in-form opponent? And the only reason Petko played bad in the second and third set was because Maria was rushing her all the time and she had no time to prepare her FH. Conditions were very difficult for both players, so some errors were inevitable from both of them. It was a good match for the most part, at least much better than most of the crapfests we have these days.

She was injured and now beat the in form player who beat Woz and Jankovic. She almost doublebagelled her. She played good baseline tennis. Most importantly: she's back.

I feel like bumping the "Retire, Maria" thread where her fans were being hopeless about her - the same ones that are cumming buckets now.

Seriously though, she could be more skillful and surgical. It's as if she's just punishing everyone with deep and hard hit balls. Even when she bagelled Henin in 08 AO she showed this weakness. Simply pummeling Vera will not necessarily be enough.

They are both top 3 players right now and have pretty consistent results. And remember, Wozz gave at IW a totally brutal and humiliating beatdown to Maria. Wozniacki showed all those huge gaps and limits in Maria´s game (bad movement, poor defense, she is unable to properly construct a point against a good defensive player, almost non-existent net skills, no variation in shots, almost non-existent slice-backhand, non-existent second serve). So if you think of Maria as a future top 3 contender, you wanna know how she will measure up with those two players.

lol. I'm sorry. Have you ever been in a Caroline post-match GM thread? Whether she wins, or loses, it's all about how she sucks, her opponent sucks, and how women's tennis sucks because Caroline is at the top.

Good for Maria and the level she played at, but she still has serious problems that players are exploiting. Not just Caroline, but Dulgheru and Peng recently as well.

Of course I have, I'm probably only this defensive cuz it concerns Maria, my favorite player. I'm not saying other players don't have it the same.

I agree with your other point, just don't like being reminded of it so often especially when she hasn't won this many matches and been this successful in a while. She loses to Greta Arn...''Retire, you washed-up has-been''. Makes the Miami final...''Oh but she can't beat Wozniacki, she has so many holes in her game, etc. etc.'' Maybe I'm overreacting, but it's genuinely how I feel  Sorry if I'm offending anyone.

To be honest, Maria was very flat against Woz in IW she wasn't hitting the ball very clean and her serve OMG was so shit. Same thing happened against Dulgheru to be honest
Caroline didn't expect to win 1 and 2 she said so herself Maria was agressively bad and Caro made her play many shots but Maria was also really tired, she rushed all her shots.

Tremendous win for Pova! Pova beat Petko into teears and desolation, so at 5-0 in the third, she didn't give Petko anything, but she didn't play as fiercely, either. So, Petko got a few games and felt a lot better about the universe, Pova still won and both left the court on a high. That's a win-win situation.

There's a lot of negatives about Petko in the threads. I believe the negativity comes from her dance. Maybe it was ok the first time, but the repetition was simply inappropriate and was perceived as a put-down to her opponents. I am glad she has committed to stopping it with this tournament.

So, Pova moves on to the Final, hopefully against Vera...

Maria was serving big last summer in clay and grass season with very few DF's throwed in here and there. Her recent struggles on serve probably forced her team to slightly change her service motion and get a more reliable serve. She still makes craploads of DF's, but her return game is as good as ever (if not better). She's breaking all kinds of opponents almost at will. Now if only those serving woes somehow went away...

In this current climate of part-timers, unproven 'elite' players, Pova is proving to be a pleasant exception. For all her labouring, fluctuating level of play, it's clear she still wants it, something which i have questioned for a while. But the signs are still good. The tour desperately needs legit champions like Pova elevating the standard of women's tennis that has been steeped in lethargy for so long.

The first set was a mix of Pova completely failing to understand the limitations in Petkovic's game. Pova hits a heavy ball these days, but her main issue was that she was lacking in much-needed width in most of the baseline exchanges. Her centralised hitting gave Petkovic the nessecary rythm needed to out-maneveur Sharapova, without her lack of real agility being exposed, especially out-wide to the BH, where her improvisational skills are minimal.

The second set was in complete contrast though however. Sharper angles, better width from Sharapova, and generally being much more potent off the early ball. Petkovic's timing is often precarious due to her lack of upper-body rotation, so the better width Sharapova was able to employ tested both the movement and timing issues of Petkovic. Petkovic is a sturdy athlete, but she's no defensive player. Lacks of a lot of suppleness when forced into frantic defensive positions. Sharapova was finally able to realise this in the latter stages of the match. At times in that second set, it was the most consistent and accurate we've seen off the ground from Pova in some time. Good to see.

Great run from Petkovic too. Still encouraging signs for her too in this match alone. Seems much more competent in high-charged baseline rallies than ever before, and her serve is steadily becoming more of an asset. Good stuff.

Oh yeah I forgot about the summer of the serve. Bitch was cracking out 11 aces in some of those matches.

Andrea disappointed me. However, no one has the will to win more than Sharapova ! Reading the Art of War must have been a must read for Maria. Very few other players have her desire to win like her. Looked like Andrea might have had a headache that got her off her game, but no excuses here. What she needs to do to win consistently is to bulk up her shoulders, arms and wrist. She doesn't have the power serve that can win her free points. If she can do that in the next year, she will be a force to be reckoned with...

The win over Dulgheru is one of the best displays of Maria's will power. Most of other players would have given up less than two hours into that match.

Maria played good in last two sets, she wasn´t making errors and absolutely deserved this win...Petkovic was maybe tired (?) and harmless after first

Q: She thought you would be tired in the third after the long match you had the previous night. Didn't seem to be that way.

Sharapova: Because I didn't do the dance after. I wasn't tired... More than anything, I sensed that she was tired -- probably a lot of the dancing that she's been doing -- and I took advantage of it.

What a defining tournament for Andrea!

Again a bad encounter with her head today, way to easy opponent in 3rd set. But as long as she progesses generally as seen until now, nothing to be worried. The positive thing is that she doesn't rise too fast with all the negative implications possible.

Will be difficult now coming back to Germany, with all the media focus on her, playing Fed Cup and the only home tourney Stuttgart. A lots of pressure she hopefully can deal with, but that's the challenge of being the biggest hope of German tennis since Steffi Graf.

pathetic from Petkovic, for me injured or not she quit out because of not handling her nerves, its her Serbian/Bosnian heritage because this thing is typical in the past of ppl like Tipsarevic, Djokovic and Jankovic

Sharapova ballbashing like a maniac and the wind kept half her shots in, lets see her do that in Final against a far better oppponent

Your resentment. Is delicious.

Maria's first serve is down to 98-103 miles from 110 miles pre-surgery but her return game is better than ever. Things definitely look good!

I havent been watching the MPHs all week, but it was quite windy today. She was an effective server today, if nothing else. And her returns were great.

To the question "This was just a random run and not a sign that your pathetic choking mental midget ass became a real champion all of a sudden, right?" Petkvoc replied with an emphatic "YES!".

I mean, she had done quite well in keeping the errors form her wonky strokes down to an acceptable level, particularly on the Jankovic match, but as soon as she found herself up against an aggressive player determined to take the game to her, she completely folded, her brain froze (LOLOLOL shot selection) and she began spraying shots everywhere. ROS was a joke in the last two sets.

Sharapova seemed to forget for a while that she sucks (i.e. all of the 2nd set and right until she stepped in to serve for the match). Superb aggressive ROS (and Petkovic is by no means a weak server), great depth of shot, relentlessly aggressive, some semblance of clever point construction here and there (those loopers to the corners to push Petkovic back), no DFs  . Adapted to the conditions well essentially by completely disregarding them ("Wind be damned, I'm going for this shot!"). Loved the ruthlessness of going out of her way to inflict the bagel set.
