Watching these two play is very fun tennis for me. A lot of court craft. Vera was so solid at the net and so is Radwanska for that matter. Much better than watching Sharapova win in 3:30 while spraying the ball left and right. :rolleyes:

Well, what did I say? Vera prevailed quite easily, even though she played not particularly well (I´d say below average).

Radwanska has simply no weapons against the really good players.

Seriously? I didn't see two good players on court, but only one. From a player who's been in Top 10 I expected a lot more.

Nope. It was a beatdown that Fran gave to herself. She basically self-destructed in a very bad way (37 UEs during 14 games -- and there were not many long rallies).

She lost to Radwanska playing smart and aggressive (for her) tennis.
Not to the passive and unmotivated version we've seen today. Each match is different. Is it that hard to understand?

Radwanska is so lazy. She actually seems to be able to generate some nice powershots in the right spots nowadays. But to do that more regularly, she would actually have to put effort into hitting the ball. Radwanska seems more comfortable playing cute. In that match whoever took the initiative in rallies won the points most of the time, and most of the time it was Vera, who attacked.

I don´t understand why people compare this match to others Radwanska played here...every match is different so those "I don´t know how Radwanska beat this and this" comments are beyond me, if she played bad in this match it doesn´t automatically mean that she played like this in other matches

It doesn't effect eyesight like our grannies would have said, but blisters could be a problem, mind you in your case there is some symptoms of tunnel vision!

Problem with Pova's match which I watched was that the rallies (when they did happen) were pretty damn boring and a lot of the errors were wild and not provoked at all.

I prefer a player who can keep the ball in play.

Can´t agree here...there were many epic rallies between Sharapova and Dulgheru when Maria was bashing balls left and right, even tried dropshots, lobs and Dulgheru´s defense was mad...some of those ended with an error, but as you said also a rally finished with UE can be exciting

Good point. There weren't many "stupid" errors in this match, especially in the 1st set. I know that Radwanska's stats look terrible, but she wasn't THAT bad. She fell apart in the 2nd, tho.


I also think that with her style & her usual level, Radwanska will be able to reach QFs of big tounaments in the future too. There will always be a lot of brainless ballbashers around. If she is willing to attack more (which she can) and construct points more often, she could do some bigger damage occasionally.

Addressing the 'how did Aga beat Fran' question... she started out well and didn't look back! Francesca would have had to pull out a few crazy shots in a row to get some momentum. The key moment for Aga was stopping fran getting level 3-3 in the second. 4-2 instead of 3-3 is BIG. She was just too good!

Aga is great to watch because she has the touch and feel that very few players (if any) have these days. I could watch that drop-shot/lob-volley combo all day! She owns it. And she really can pick up the pace once in a while. Her serve is beyond pathetic and I refuse to believe she can't do any better. But she's a fast mover, generally a low-ue type player without being boring. I really like great crafting on court. It's why I love Francesca and why my favourite ATP player of recent times was Santoro. For me she is one of the more watchable players.

I thought that it was quite well played from Zvonareva, apart from a couple of really bad return games. Hitting so many winners (+ positive ratio) on this slow ass court against someone who retrieves as well as Radwanska is quite an accomplisment. Plus Zvonareva was consistently effective in the forecourt (both overheads - which you really really need against Radwanska - and volleying), and her BH was in fine form for the most. Only the serving was subpar (low % IIRC and very conservative 2nd serves - it's not that Radwanska was going to whack them away though).

I'll agree that, despite the SP, it was NID because the consistent depth and accuracy of Zvonareva's ball kept Radwanska pinned behind the baseline, not giving her the time to play her game and rendering her (even more) harmless. Given her lack of raw power, Radwanska knows she's done as soon as she is forced to retreat deep behind the baseline, so she did her best to remain as close to it as possible, but the end result was that she just fumbled a number of returns of very deep shots from Zvonareva.

In the previous round vs Schiavone, the low pace of the rallies had allowed Radwanska to use her bag of tricks to the fullest, but yesterday, since Radwanska has nothing to hurt a player who moves as well and hits as accurately as Zvonareva, it was back to the same old pushing that sometimes drives the top players right to the edge but almost never actually takes them out.

Winners are overrated. Both Caroline and Aga do hit point-winning shots(shots that have no chance to be returned well) but usually their opponents actually catch them and return the ball to their own side of court or somewhere in the stands or so on.

Vera can play as a pusher ( against hantuchova at Pattaya) but in this match every single point she was aggressive and painting the lines.

Agreed, apart from the fact that Vera had not only a couple of really bad return games in the first set, but she had one really bad service game in the beginning as well (two DFs and two UEs) and gifted away that service game to Aga (remember, Vera lead 2:0 in the first set with an early break). Bravery is something I sometimes feel she needs more then more power. She is not missing it all the time, but in some matches.

Sure is an awful lot of saving of the WTA going on in this tournament. I thought the consensus was that a defeat of Vera would save the WTA so I am surprised to learn by the title of this thread that she has actually saved WTA. Way the go Vera!

I believe Vera’s saving power though is limited. I had the impression that had Caro not lost and faced Vera in the final most here would view such a match as the ultimate destruction of the WTA. So it was left to Andrea Petkovic to save the WTA. But Andrea’s feat will not be appreciated for too much longer since I sense some believe a Sharapova victory against her is also necessary to save the WTA.

I think she cared, but could not find the win within herself and perhaps let it go. Too bad; still good tournament nevertheless.
