World No. 2 Kim Clijsters tell the press in Miami that her fear of getting radiation poisoning as a result of leaks in a couple of Japan's nuclear reactors will keep her from playing any tournaments in Asia this fall. "I won't go [to Japan], Clijsters said. "And I won't go to Beijing either."

I hope that's not her real reason, and it's about not wanting Jada to be away from her for so long. Because she would be pretty damn dumb if fear of radiation poisoning is her reason for pulling out from tournaments 6 months in advice. :help:

Asia as a place, yes, but I wouldn't say Asians. She did become doubles #1 with Ai Sugiyama as a doubles partner.

I'm going to blame this on Kim being A) ignorant of how radiation works because of a lack of formal schooling and B) being a paranoid mother, which I know is quite natural for new mothers to be

Chucky's quote?

It was Serena who stated that Hingis lacked "a formal education".

As for Clijsters, this is just an excuse that sounds better than stating the truth: "We all know what a fucking joke the WTA Tour is, and I only care about winning Slams at this point so I'm not going to travel across the world to play in some tournaments that will have no effect on my legacy. My season ends after the US Open because once the Slams are over, I'm going to rest my body."

HAHA Im not surprised at all. I think she pulled out of her match at Indian Wells with fears about the radation poising and used her shoulder as an excuse. She twittered about being concerned about possible radiation and the very next day she pulls out of the tournment. I respect Kim for being Inventive and finding excuses to not play in events she doesnt want to. Im curious to see what her excuse will be after she wins in Miami and doesnt want to play clay court tournments haha..... As long as you keep taking the big titles Kim let the haters hate !

She skipped the Asian tournaments in previous years, so I doubt she ever intended to go there in the first place.

I hope she didn't really say that, though, because as far as bogus excuses go this is right up there. Completely ridiculous (but then again, the media hysteria surrounding this nuclear accident hasn't exactly helped put things in perspective; there's an interesting article (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-12785274) on the subject on the BBC website).

If she's really concerned about this and is withdrawing from tournaments six months in advance, she's a moron.

If she's just looking for an excuse, wouldn't faking an injury or playing the mommy card (which is overused as is) make more sense? The media loves to coo at Jada and it would probably result in 10 more blogs on tennis.com about just how incredible Kim is for finding time to parent while playing a game for a living. She's really been annoying lately. Her Indian Wells withdrawal was shady, and will be even moreso if she plays (well) in Miami. Her PR guy needs to wake up because she's starting to sound like Jankovic, only not funny.

My season ends after the US Open because once the Slams are over, I'm going to rest my body."

I hate this attitude. Yes the Slams are the most important tournaments in tennis, but tennis is more than Slams. The tour shouldn't just be 2 weeks of tennis four times a year.

That said I think the WTA need to market their bigger tournaments better. The ATP has a great brand with the 9 Masters events. The big names go there. The big names want to win them. Everybody knows Federer has the record for most Slams (16), but a lot of people also know that Nadal has the record for most Masters (18).

How many people know who has the record for most Tier 1s/Premier 5s/Premier Mandatory on the WTA tour? I dont...

The WTA should copy the ATP and call them Masters. Let the top players play at least 8 of them and skip one of their own choice. I suppose "senior" players could be allowed to skip two if fx. they've played more than 600 matches on the WTA tour

As a non-biased Kim fan, must say this is quite ridiculous :weirdo:

She clearly don't want to play there, she wouldn't have played IW if it wasn't mandatory and it wasn't Asia. I believe she's truly concerned about all the radiation problems but I dunno if that's the reason why she isn't commiting to play in such tournaments. Plus, in my very personal opinion, I don't really apreciate that over-dramatic attitude about this kind of issues, it's definitely not helpfull for those who are really suffering.

Q: When you are looking at the world
events of Japan and Libya do you think
about what is happening to the world and
Jada ’ s future?
KC: Certainly . As soon as I heard that there was
a radioactive cloud on its way to the west coast,
normally I would not have worried about that ,
because you think it ’ s so far away. But this time
I was “Let ’ s get out of here as soon as
possible, ” and also with Jada you think about it
differently . When I was younger I used to worry
about stuff , like when we had to go to Australia
or Tokyo , and the war in Kuwait ( sic) was going
on and then on your flight map you could see
that we were flying over Iraq and Iran and I
had quite a bit of fear . I want to follow world
affairs , but I do know that when Jada is walking
around I don ’t want her to see those things.
But Brian looks at it quite differently . He knows
what is happening and feels badly about it but
it does not affect him as much as it affects me.
I was like , “We need to get those pills .” I went
to all the natural food stores to look for
products with natural iodine like seaweed,
spirulina , and kelp . I bought it all . And Brian
just laughs at me. He is like , "If the government
says it will not have any influence no problem , "
but I think they are lying. Of course, they say
that because they can ’ t evacuate the whole
west coast . But I won’t be fooled. Even in
Belgium my sister and aunt called me saying ,
“You gotta leave because the cloud is coming ,
or you can just put Jada alone the plane and
we’ ll pick her up here at the airport .” What a
panic . It was a bum . Do you really think it can
get here in Indian Wells? I didn’ t even want to
imagine it .

Then there ’ s the Toray ( Pan Pacific
Open) in Tokyo in October .
KC: I won' t go . And I won' t go to Beijing either.

that because they can ’ t evacuate the whole

we’ ll pick her up here at the airport .” What a

get here in Indian Wells? I didn’ t even want to

:cuckoo:

Won't be fooled? She comes across as clueless, paranoid and irrational (to say nothing of her aunt and sister). Her husband seems much more reasonable.

Someone should explain to her that any exposure to that "radioactive cloud" on the West Coast would be insignificant compared to the dose of radiation she receives every time she gets an x-ray at a medical facility (and as a professional an athlete, she must have had her fair share of those).

Also, I kinda think people are coming down a little hard on her. Maybe she might change her mind later? It's hard not to get paranoid in this day and age, with earthquakes, tsunamis, radioactive plumes, and even that volcano that erupted a couple of weeks back. Would I personally go as far as to buy all that seaweed and pills? No. But I do think she's justified in being a bit uneasy.

she's promoting paranoia and fear in people that need not be...

He is like , "If the government

imagine it .

Then there ’ s the Toray ( Pan Pacific
Open) in Tokyo in October .
KC: I won' t go . And I won' t go to Beijing either.

Well she sounds a bit crazy and paranoid. The only concern I can understand is not wanting to go to Tokyo. Tokyo is only 250 kilometres away from Fukushima and the Tokyo area has 35 million inhabitants. In cold weather and snow in a highly populated destroyed country with electricity problems the last thing you want is a mass panic, so the government could withhold information just for security purposes. Foreigners have been advised by their embassies to leave Tokyo, so why would she go there in six months, if she doesn´t have to? Radiation doesn´t simply go away. Plus you still have the concern over more natural disasters.

Of course it doesn´t help that she most likely never had any intentions to play there anyway.

I definitely think Kim is off with this one, with her fears being really exacerbated by the media and being a mother. But it's ridiculous to accuse Kim of not caring about Asia, she has always cared about regions that have experienced disasters and has donated money as well. So while her reasoning about radiation is definitely wacko, she still cares about the problems in Japan and has done stuff to help and shouldn't be criticized for that.

Totally agree. Great post.

A big distinction needs to be made between acting a bit wacko which is quite obviously the case and being uncaring which is definately not the case.

Si tacuisses, philosophus mansisses.

Yesterday morning Kim spoke at WTA All-Access Hour in Flamish most frankly about new world events. English translation (http://sportspying.com/of-war-and-radiation-kim-clijsters-speaks.html):

[...] As soon as I listened that there was a hot clouded cover on the way to the west coast, routinely I would not have disturbed about that, because you think it’s so distant away. But this time I was “Let’s get out of here as soon as possible,” and also with Jada you think about it differently. [...] I was like, “We need to get those pills.” I went to all the healthy food stores to demeanour for products with healthy iodine like seaweed, spirulina, and kelp. I paid for it all. And Brian only laughs at me. He is like, “If the supervision says it will not have any change no problem,” but I think they are lying. Of course, they contend that because they can’t leave the total west coast. But I won’t be fooled. Even in Belgium my sister and aunt called me saying, “You gotta leave because the clouded cover is coming, or you can only put Jada alone the craft and we’ll collect her up here at the airport.” What a panic. It was a bum. Do you unequivocally think it can get here in Indian Wells? I didn’t even want to suppose it.

Q: Then there’s the Toray (Pan Pacific Open) in Tokyo in October.

KC: I won’t go. And I won’t go to Beijing either.

Kim's shoulder and her wrist are mending and she’s ready to urge her title in Miami.

In Melbourne, Kim has hinted that 2011 could be her final year playing on the WTA tour: "I know this is probably going to be my last full season on the tour, and then we'll see," Clijsters said.

First of all to the Kim haters and pretend-fans you are being wishy washy hypocrites: Kim is not asking any kinda favour unlike Serena who not only did part-time but also was literally blackmailing and threatening the WTA with legal action if she didn't get her way. In fact I would go all the way and say that what is happening now is the direct consequence of Serena/Richard threats: the WTA pussies became afraid of incurring court expenses (to avoid the risk of bankruptcy) and so they ended up with the current policy of tolerating top players in getting away with systematic tournament-skipping/part-timing and all that. And now even Venus is in this game and in fact she's gone further than anyone: completely skipping ALL WTA events and literally slam-hopping from one major to another. Kim only mentioned two events there

Wow she sounds like a crazy person.
Uh.. conspiracy theories?
Definitely some Paranoid Delusions there.I disagree. The country is being evacuated of all foreigners even the longtime resident ones and you can bet on your ass that especially the ones with kids are NOT returning to Japan anytime soon. So logically it's entirely within Kim's right to do exactly that: add whatever margin of error she sees fit when interpreting radiation or whatever other data. Her libertarian skepticism of govt regarding this matter is obviously influenced by how the Belgian govt. lied about Chernobyl (they claimed that the fallout radiation would stop at the German border and not affect Belgium). Also just like Kim the American govt doesn't believe the Japanese govt's data either! They don't believe the official version about how bad the situation is and are asking the Japanese govt to allow US investigators access to the damaged nuke site. Does that make these Americans paranoid? Is Obama a conspiracy theorist?

Finally something to feed the haters, so I guess this explains the whole fuss that's being made.

We all know Kim wasn't going to play these tournaments anyway. Whether the reason that she gave is a good one or not is a different story. It does seem a bit early to give such a reason... But I personally don't really care. We know Kim's only taking her family into account. And that's precisely why some like and other dislike her. At the end of the day, she will play what she wants to play and pays if she has to. End of story.

Shouldn't she better retire now then? Well, as the winner of the last 2 slams, I guess it would be pretty bad for the sport.

No, it's because she's using this tragedy as a spring board for her excuses as to why she isn't playing Beijing or Tokyo. We all know she doesn't like playing there, if she came right out and said it, I think more people would have respect for her. Oracene was right, Kim is as dubios as they come!

No, it's because she's using this tragedy as a spring board for her excuses as to why she isn't playing Beijing or Tokyo. We all know she doesn't like playing there, if she came right out and said it, I think more people would have respect for her.

You've got a point there ;)

In the news today: "Radioactive Tokyo tap water is unfit for babies". (It's on most news websites)Exactly! This shit is ugly and Kim knows it. That's partly because she is somewhat pro-environment and hates pollution, which is also an additional reason why she doesn't buy all the pro-nuke storytelling that "things are all right and under control" That's BS as any ecologically intelligent person concurs. The care for the environment is also one more reason to, maybe not eliminate but at least minimize jet-setting to various faraway destinations... And as if that's not enough many of these places over there (like Beijing) are eco-hell-holes where the level of air pollution alone is barely above the level of Dickensian Britain and Western Europe 100 years ago. How come that the streets of (especially south & east) Asian cities are littered with people who habitually put on white surgical masks on themselves and their children just in order to go out and walk on the streets? That alone right there is all the evidence that Kim needs to prove her point.

We know Kim's only taking her family into account..That's right. And even if she was taking herself only into account, still there's absolutely nothing wrong with being not willing to subject oneself to (the consequences of) a thermonuclear meltdown. There are far too many infinitely more important things in life to let life and limb be at the mercy of nukes just so in order to play some stupid ball game. And that doesn't mean she should quit playing, but only that she should play it safe and avoid risks. That's all there is to it.

Actually she was talking about the US government which makes even less sense. The Japanese government probably could have things to hide, but not the US government.

To be fair to her, she looks genuinely paranoid. She only brought up China and Japan after being asked about it and her initial point was about IW. So in her mind the excuses are valid. She didn't specify exactly why she wouldn't go there, even though that's definitely part of the reason.

WTF? I live in Hong Kong and have friends living in South Korea, China and Taiwan, and there's no such ridiculous habit. Don't make up shit like Kim did.

It's 6 months later, and she has absolutely no proof whatsoever that 6 months later things will remain in such a bad state or get worse, it's WRONG for a public figure to suggest such nonsense without any back-up, it's simply not reasonable and responsible. Or maybe she shouldn't live in US either coz there seem to be a much bigger chance her child will get fat, huh?

And lol @ the term stupid ball game, what do you support her for then? Coz your fav movie is Shrek and you secretly fancy Princess Fiona? WTF? If she doesn't wanna play then who cares about some *random slam winners* doesn't play in Asia, but to openly suggest that Tokyo and Beijing will still be dangerous 6 months later just coz she THINKS so, is just plain wrong.

Q: When you are looking at the world
events of Japan and Libya do you think
about what is happening to the world and
Jada ’ s future?

normally I would not have worried about that ,
because you think it ’ s so far away.

1. The levels of radiation reaching other countries are miniscule, and the elements disintegrate quickly
2. Radiation does not kill instantly
3. The WTA will not hold the tournament in Tokyo if it is dangerous
4. Japan is in the throes of a cataclysmic disaster, reeling from unprecedented losses. Hardly the time for anyone to say 'I aint going anywhere near there'
5. Kim is afraid of flying over the Middle-East, Asia, Africa. She is pioneering civilian space travel.
6. The sensible thing to do (assuming she had any intention of playing) would be to say 'I will wait to see how the situation is 6 months from now'. If she was not going to play anyway, say so and pay the fine/make up an injury if you don't want to cough up the dough

And then she says something like this.....I think she could have answered with more sensitivity to what people are going through. I'm surprised she didn't so maybe she isn't that bright? When people say 'good for her' and 'she should do what she wants', I think this situation is different.

What is dusgusting: Justine who announced to stop playing (second time), just when Kim was about to win the US Open. As for drawing the attention to he:orself, this counts! Was it so urgent that she could not wait a couple of days longer?

Check your facts yourself

She never announced it in middle of the US Open, she was due to announce it at the end of the US Open 2009 but then Kimberly won it, so Justine delayed her press conference.... but she had to announce it BEFORE october in order to play in January (according to the WTA rules, you have to announce it 3 months before your first tournament).

And about her comeback, if she announced it straight after the AO, it would have been much worse since Kimberly was going to win. If she did the week after, same for Kim because usually a Slam winner is under the spotlight for one-two weeks. Then Fed Cup, Justine could not compete there, and Belgian guys would have felt this as a betrayal... :tape:

So Justine did her best to announce her comeback/retirement. And still, why would she care about your beloved Kimberly? After all, Kim didn't give a shit for her fans when she cut her farewell tour off ? :rolls: :help:

kim not playing isn't the issue. its the reason she gave that is. she's spreading ignorance and fear mongering. not cool. Kim Clijsters=Alex Jones

Do you have a TV at home????

I guess Kim only watched TV. Smart people know how to read newspaper and articles too.
