Venus to warm-up in Brussels before Roland Garros
(AFP) – 3 hours ago

BRUSSELS — US tennis star Venus Williams confirmed on Tuesday she will play the inaugural Brussels Open WTA clay-court tournament from May 14-21, the Belga news agency reported.

Injury-plagued Williams has been bothered by an abdominal injury for the past two months and the world number 15 is hoping to use the Belgian tournament to get in form for the French Open a week later.

Denmark's world number one Caroline Wozniacki, Russian Vera Zvonareva, Serb Jelena Jankovic, Italy's reigning French Open champion Francesca Schiavone and Israel's Shahar Peer will also compete in Brussels.

Five-time Wimbledon champion Williams suffered the injury at the Australian Open, and was forced to withdraw from the Miami tournament last month.

Is Schiavone nuts :cuckoo: she obviously has no motivation but instead of focusing on defending her major she is playing here .

Well she needs matches and she is obviously being realistic because she knows that defending her title is very unlikely so she's probably trying to rack up as many points as possible to try and save her ranking

It's hardly surprising Mestach received a WC
She is ranked nr 1 in juniors, won the AO juniors this year and she is Belgian.

No one expects her to win a match, but it will be a good experience for her :)

From official site:

Kvitova, Cibulkova and Goerges withdraw from Brussels Open

19:15

At the last minute three top players at the Brussels Open withdrew because of various reasons. Petra Kvitova, new member of the top ten, played a lot these last weeks - she won in Madrid last Sunday. Dominika Cibulkova and Julia Goerges, who suffered from a bad back, didn't want to take any risk prior to Roland Garros.
