The first thing for me is being able to bring my good form from practice into matches :o
After that I would say my second serve, when I get nervous/not confident I can get into the Sharapova number of double faults.
I also find it difficult to play against junk ballers or people that use a lot of variety and not a lot of pace. I turn into an error machine. I much prefer an all out hitting match.

That's really the stand out.
After that, it would be developing a bit more power. Oh, and getting at least 2 good racquets with strings that don't break once a month!

My game is very flat and im working hard to find ways to win when my A game isnt on.
My forehand can just leave the galaxy for no reason. My backhand is always there and my best shot. Serve is now more solid, movement is fine. I just tend to go for too much, or not enough. I struggle finding a rallying level, though it has greatly evolved in the past year.
It also explains why on certain days i can beat great players and some others, just can't do shit. I've played very well in Futures tournaments losing in two tight sets against players ranked way ahead of me, and then would lose 2 and 2 to players I could beat. Its annoying.

My backhand used to be my best shot, but now I run around all of them. I lost all confidence in that shot, and do a little Camille Pin-esque double hand slice. Sometimes I can still find my sweet spot, but I'm too scared. :( Other than that I'm pretty confident in my other shots.

I suck at the net, so I rarely come in. And I am too tentative with my backhand. My forehand has always been my bread and butter, and when I go for a big shot and miss, I don't think twice about it. If I net a backhand or sail on long, it gets in my head and I lose confidence in that shot very quickly.

For us it was finding a coach that our daughter could relate too. Her coach now if very understanding and never uses negativity as a motivator. We have been with this coach for about a year and have seen much improvement in our daughters skill level and enjoyment. Every month he gives her a zoom report, goes to tournaments to watch and helps keep the experience positive.

It's good that you already found a good coach for your daughter. For others who still can't find good coaches, try the tennis lessons from the internet. They're quite effective. You just need to find real ones. I'm actually wondering why some of the tennis top secrets that were shared on the tennis sites were not shared on expensive tennis coach lessons.

The serve in general is an issue, as well as trying to hit an overhead without letting it bounce first.
Forehand isn't a particularly sound shot technically so it's prone to errors under pressure, as well as against a lot of pace.

Apr 19th, 2011, 03:21 AM
Pushing. So I guess this is a head thing, when matches are tight or I don't have a lead I automatically resort to pushing or moonballing. Mainly because I get tight, especially in the arm. Another reason would be that I don't want to give a match away with errors, and at club level you can usually win by pushing

Tennis serve and footwork are the top two most important things in tennis in my opinion. I once had problems with my footwork but it gradually improved by doing eliminating below mistakes:
1. Taking Steps That Are Too Big.
2. Not Split Stepping.
3. Not Playing On the “Balls” Of Your Feet.
I found this from below article. I hope you find this helpful.

My biggest challenge on court are temper tantrums about every 5 minutes. My team mates were betting on 5 destroyed rackets during this season.
And I have no fucking backhand which would deserve that name. Mostly, I am slicing my way thru the match hoping to get some ball onto my forehand to fire it away... but I am working on that. Constantly.

I always think my footwork is lazy, but i find it really hard go rectify it mid-match. I'm either taking too long a stride a step and over-running the ball, or i'm impossibly late to it:o
I think the main issue with me is concentration. I find it hard to sustain my level, without it dropping. But i guess that's part of the challenge i guess.

My biggest problem is overrunning the ball or just getting too damn close to the ball. I constantly have to keep reminding myself to back away from the ball and to stop moving backwards when striking my shot. My old coach would always tell me to move forward when striking the ball and not to "fall" backwards

Mental is my biggest issues. In my opinion, all my shots are sound, but When things get tight, my feet stop moving, and I start to decelerate on the serve, which means double faults, or attackable second serves.
I think my biggest issue in matches is not being able to find a balance between agression and defensiveness. Usually, at the start of matches, I'm nervous, and I will try to play aggressively, so I rack up a few errors, and fall behind. Then I panic, and start playing defensively, and then I work myself into a mental hole that I can't get out of.
It usually takes me a match to settle down and get used to the match setting, but by then, I've usually lost my first round match, and am just playing for consolation :(

@MurrayState: I don't know... my partner has the same problem. It doesn't seem to bother me but I think because I grew up playing squash where you have to move all over the court very quickly.
Maybe try this: when you are doing rallying practise, concentrate solely on hitting the ball in your strikezone (e.g. between waist and shoulder height) 100% of the time. That means that when someone hits a deep and/or loopy ball at you, you will have to move back to make sure you hit it in your strikezone. Conversely, you will have to move forward to anything shortish so that you can hit it at waist or chest-height. Don't focus on your ball striking, just focus on your movement and moving to get the ball into your strikezone.
Just an idea - I'm not a coach or anything. But if it helps, let me know! :)

Realized tonight I can be such a headcase. I mean I knew it, but tonight magnified it for me. I was playing a friend on clay. I'd say I beat him 70% of the time we play. He enjoys playing on clay because he can go into pusher mode, while I always try to be offensive. Well today, he was really taking it to me, but I buckled down and won the first set 7-6 from behind. Second set I was doing all the right things. Working the points, going for it, etc. and earned a chance to go up two breaks. I ended up losing all three of those points and that game. Lost that set 6-7 and then the next set 1-6 because I was so annoyed with myself. I always try and learn from losses, and the lesson from that one was definitely to keep going for my shots. Sometimes I struggle with that and hold back when I'm the one who should be loose and comfortable.

Getting the ball into the court........
I find it really really difficult playing players that dont put much pace on the shot. It's so difficult. I never imagined it'd be that hard to deal with those shots. It makes me hesitant and slows me down. When I try and blast the shot for a winner, I usually shank it or it goes long.

Fitness.
My ground game is good enough to end points quickly against most kinds of players, but when I play good counter punchers and get into 20 shot rallies my fitness becomes a huge liability.
I lost 2 matches in the spring where I got blitzed in the 3rd set for this exact reason.
I'm just to lazy to train.

Mentally I'm quite weak. When a weak shot is returned to me I don't have the courage to hit it hard and take the risk of it going long, because it happens quite often. Also, my serve is a bit erratic, I have periods in a match where I serve very well and periods where the serve is absolutely hopeless. So not very consistent...

What grip are you using? I've found that, for me, a continental right hand and my left hand one bevel counterclockwise to that works well.
