Hope this will be the first time Maria will show some good tennis in her home country.

I'm sure Maria's game will improve a little again as she has been from match to match (expect that last one of course). Masha loves the battle and fed cup is the perfect event to force her to up her level and her passion. If Masha has a good fed cup I'm confident it will transpire to good results there after.

Doubles epic fail in prospect :sobbing: Vesnina/Zvonareva should be #1 pick there (shame that Petrova pairs with Liezel FUCKING Huber on WTA events). Sharapova vs Cornet would be awesome :hearts:

I have to say despite my anger over most of the fellow Russians (thank God Myskina & Dementieva retired), their Fed Cup team remains my perennial pick for the trophy (despite Maria having only played once) along with the Italians.

Well, I've watched Clijsters vs Cornet in AO and that was the least self-destruction mode Alize was in for over two years. Admittedly Kim played the biggest errorfest of the event thus far and literally dragged Cornet into the match but we all know a certain Poova can put any errorfest from Clijsters into a deep shade :o

I liked Myskina & Demented.

:sobbing:

Vera all her implosions aside was the one backing Maria when Myskina & Elena made those awful comments back in the day. After all those years that is the one thing that keeps my with some warm feelings towards her and prevents me from openly criticizing her after her numerous 2010 near misses

^^To be fair, if I was anyone else but a member of Team Sharapova back then, I would have a) disliked Yuri, too and b) felt Masha was more American than Russian.
Plus c) I have no idea how I would deal with someone who's as loud as Masha was in 2003-2005.

Monzanator
Jan 26th, 2011, 08:25 PM
How come it was all the Moscow based players that felt like Sharapova was American in first place? Yuri was a no-nonsense character back then and remains so but I do feel like Maria was treated second-hand because coming from the outside of Moscow. Moreover there was a similar occurance here in Poland when Caroline Wozniacki participated in numerous junior events in Poland (and was beating all the Polish juniors hand over fist to the point other players' parents pressed our Federation to ban Wozniacki from playing here because she was duh... Danish - suck my sorry ass, but Caroline speaks better Polish then I do for Christ sake!).

I do have a VERY long memory and it comes with the following:

CARLSBAD, Calif. - The so-called real Russian will play the so-called Russian-American in the quarterfinals of $1.3 million Acura Classic on Friday and a tremendous amount of pride is on the line.

Sizzling Sharapova ..

French Open champion Anastasia Myskina has never lost to Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova on the court and seemingly is winning the battle for the hearts and minds of other Russian players.

The brunette Myskina is the acknowledged leader of the deep Russian squad in the locker room, while the blonde Sharapova, to some, is little more than interloper when it comes to things Russian.

French Open finalist Elena Dementieva said last week that Sharapova is "not really Russian" and on Thursday, the Moscow-born and -bred Myskina said Sharapova's "mentality is American" and that she doesn't think Sharapova "has ever to been (back) to Russia."

Those comments didn't set well with the ferociously competitive teenager, who didn't exactly call for a Lear jet to take her from Sochi to Florida when she was seven. Sharapova's ambitious father, Yuri, sat with her in coach class and, upon landing, took a public bus to the Bollettieri Academy so she could receive proper training.

"We've had totally different ways of growing up and developing our careers," Sharapova snarled. "Even though I train in America, I'm still Russian. That's where I come from. No one going is going to tell me where I'm from because I know here I'm from. Just because I made the decision to develop my tennis somewhere else — I think I made the right decision."

With all that said, Myskina said she would welcome Sharapova on the Russian Fed Cup team and that Maria speaks Russian "pretty well" for someone who has spent 10 off her 17 years in the U.S.

Don't invite Elena Dementieva and Maria Sharapova to the same cocktail party. (Odd Andersen / GettyImages)

"Maria has lived in the United States and she's more comfortable in English than she is in Russian," Myskina said. "But if she wants to play Fed Cup next year, why not? We want to have all the good players, because it's easier to win matches."

Sharapova was bred on MTV and has had more media-training than her compatriot, Anna Kournikova, ever had at this age. She rarely has a rough moment. But under an intense spotlight and being questioned about her true nationality, Sharapova grew angry and went after questions with same verve that she returns second serves.

You can criticize Kournikova all you like for at times being disingenuous with her tennis intentions, but she always said that she loved living in the U.S., even though her blood ran Russian red. Sharapova said that being in the U.S. is only a career decision.

"I don't feel American at all," she said. "I feel this is part of my job. I don't know where I would be living. I came to the United States because of my tennis. Maybe I would still be in Russia or maybe I would have wanted to live someone else. I moved here because of my tennis, not for anything else."

Sharapova — who takes both American and Russian correspondence courses — did say that she's quite comfortable in U.S. culture and would be equally comfortable in Russia. She's also willing to play for Russia if they ask her. But will they have her?

Maria Sharapova's combination of looks and talent have made her a media sensation. (Denis Poroy / AP)

Like Myskina, Sharapova wants to dominate the U.S. Open hard-court season. Myskina wants it badly because she wants to show the world that her tremendous run to the Roland Garros title was no fluke. Because of her relatively low profile, many already have forgotten that the 23-year-old Myskina took down Venus Williams, Jennifer Capriati and Dementieva en route to the crown.

"I really want to win right now, because I want to prove that the French Open was not only one tournament I was playing good," Myskina said. "I am No. 1 in Russian, and I want to be No. 1 in the world. That's motivation for me to win the match."

After chopping down Lindsay Davenport and Serena Williams to win Wimbledon, few doubt Sharapova's potential, but the Russian crew still thinks Myskina has the edge. Svetlana Kuznetsova says that Myskina is still the smarter player and more creative on hard courts. Vera Zvonareva (who, by the way, does think that Sharapova is a "real" Russian) says Myskina's experience could be the deciding factor. However, she cautions that Sharapova's Wimbledon victory should not be seen as surprising.

"She's going up and up and up," Zvonareva said.

Friday's winner will be determined by who handles the pressure better and whether Myskina — who owns a 2-0 record against Sharapova by virtue of a three-set win at the '04 Aussie Open and a 6-2, 6-1 wipeout at Indian Wells in March — can move the gangly teen around again.

"It's going to be really tough against Maria because now she's playing much better than when we played last time," Myskina said. "She's improved a lot, like her serve and ground strokes. I might have to try to do something else."

Sharapova says that Myskina's movement, patience and ability to "trick when you think you have the point" is what sets her apart. She says that Indian Wells was merely a terrible day, and with the experience she gained the last few months, she should be a much greater force on Friday.

Even though Sharapova easily could be mistaken for a South Florida beach girl, when it comes to discussing her athletic prospects, her eyes become as dark and full of lightning as any Russian athlete's. She's ready to say "Nyet" to Myskina.

It's a very big challenge," Sharapova said. "I haven't beaten her yet and I like those kind of challenges."

It's not like I've started watching tennis in 2008 or something, some demons from the past still live well inside my head and quite frankly I do remember all the balderdash about Maria being estranged from the Fed Cup team partly due to Yuri's presence and partly due to the fact Myskina wanting to crown herself as Russian #1 back in 2004 (it was all about their YEC clash back then when Yuri was doing the mindgames in the stands). For me it's not a line in an old article, I've seen it with my own eyes as it happened and it all comes down to Myskina's ego as the main reason of her wrath towards Maria and I won't forget it even though they both might claim it's a done deal and belongs to the past...

I hope you're not trying to say I started watching tennis in 2008.

So yeah, Myskina was jealous of all the attention Maria got. Not just globally, but probably even in their home country Russia which Nastya thought was not fair since she was the first Russian to win a slam and felt like Maria wasn't even a real Russian.
Not saying she was right, but that's how she felt and I personally cannot hold this against her up until now.
And like you said, Yuri definitely played a part in "them" (the Fed Cup team) turning away from/against Masha. Who knows how things would have been if he was a calmer character like, I dunno, Dragana Ivanovic for example.

No, I'm not but you've obviously put Myskina into a deep shade already while I haven't. Plus I absolutely hate any kind of blackmailers :( (same goes for Radwanska who bitched about Maria getting appearance fee in Warsaw while she didn't and thus faked an injury  ).

What does that mean?

I don't know what you mean with blackmailing, also. Did Nastya say "Masha or Me" to the Fed Cup coach? Well, it's not like Masha went out of her way to play for her country until it was time for the Olympics. I know this sounds harsh, but I don't think Masha puts as much heart into the whole Fed Cup thing as players like Elena D did.

Ps. I think A-Rad had every right to be pissed at the Warsaw tournament director. The way her and her family handled the situation was wrong, though. Should have just withdrawn without any public statements.

Myskina was always a mean-hearted, jealous and selfrighteous bitch, which she focused most acutely on Pova. She was the big fish in the small pond of Russian Women's tennis at the time and despised Pova for winning Wimbledon right after her epic RG win.

Myskina, rather than being able to bask in the glory of being the only Russian Woman to ever win a major and revel in the adoration of the Russian sports fans, not only had to immediately share the spot light with Pova but also had to take the back seat because Pova won Wimbledon, was just barely 17 and was just as beautiful, in her own way, as Myskina. Intolerable crimes that Myskina will never forget nor forgive.

Myskina's public nasty attitude contrasted sharply with Pova's ability to always find something nice to say. Myskina's public image deteriorated and so did her game, both eaten away from the inside by the corrosive acid of pride.

When a kid's healthy pride of court performance starts to turn to arrogance, I often have them compare and contrast Myskina and Pova's 2004 court performance, public persona and comment on what could have been. It almost always does the trick: a player's pride of accomplishment should not preclude an appreciation of other player's accomplishments.

Tarpishchev: we must pass the French team
Today held a press conference with President of Russian Tennis Federation Shamil Tarpishchev and vice president OFWs Marat Safin, dedicated to the upcoming quarter in early February, the Federation Cup.

"We started our training on Saturday. Dinara Safina in Moscow, she was the first released on the court, just on Saturday at 17:00. Svetlana Kuznetsova are also in the capital, and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova should arrive tomorrow. It is too early to talk about the form of our girls but I think that if no one will come to us injured, then everything should go fine. All but Sharapova is now located in Europe, so that the problems of adaptation must take second place. We will have 9 days to complete training, and it is quite enough. I think that if all goes according to plan, we must take command of France, which today announced Alize Cornet, Virginie Razzano, Pauline Parmentier and Julie Kuain.

With regard to children and their match of the Davis Cup in March, then it is too early to talk about who will play for the national team. Our bench players are very limited, we suggest that all, and who can play, it's hard to say. I can only say exactly what Igor Andreev will not participate, because this time he planned a tour of Latin America, so pull it to the weekend in Moscow, it would be illogical and wrong "- reports the words Tarpishchev correspondent Championat.ru" Roman Semenov.

Sounds to me like Masha is the only one who isn't in Europe as of now. Could be a faulty translation, though.:rolls: Either way, I'm getting really excited for Fed Cup already.:bounce:

oh i see..thanks..

nahhhh, im sorry i dont really know anything about FED CUP:lol::lol:(shame:lol:)so if that will not raise her rank, then what benefit can she get out from this tourney??so sorry..just wanna know..really have no idea..

I thought that rebuilding her game(despite the terrible loss in the fourth round in Australia, there might have been some good things to point to in the first three rounds)called for patience along with steady progress. If she plays well, and makes more progress in rebuilding, the ranking thing really does not matter much. If she plays poorly, she will need to figure out why. Either way, it is good that she plays.

I knew before the match started this could happen.

Playing Razzano again so shortly after the AO is not a good thing. Virginie was very determined and it showed: she played her very best tennis today. Add up that Maria looked highly uncomfortable because she was in a situation she wasn't in for 2 years, it makes for a pretty bad loss. Hopefully she settles down now and gets this out of her system, I still believe she can beat Cornet tomorrow (given that she's playing) but she really has to stop throwing in double faults. They drag down her whole game. :o

Let's hope Tarpischev's ingenious plan of putting up an 18 y.o. with the decisive rubber to this tie will pay off. :worship:

I do NOT want to watch Maria and Dinara play doubles.

I think its good thats she playing doubles....less pressure (even though it may come down to the doubles  )

less pressure depends on the situation:

Rus vs Fra 2-2, a lot of pressure
Rus vs Fra 1-3 or 0-4, it does not matter

Am I the only one who thinks that all comes down to her not being able to put spin on her 2nd serve in matches?? How do u improve that? She says she serves great in practise

I still think Maria could've beaten Cornet tomorrow though...I really thought Maria looked very tense and unsettled out there. She started with a lot of intensity but as soon as the first 2 or 3 DFs in a row came her intensity level dropped and it all went negative from there. It's been a long time since she played and actually had success in Moscow, and it has been 3 years since she played Fed Cup.

I seriously don't know what to say anymore. I have tried to remain positive and support her, but I am done with this shit. And to think she is a multiple grand slam champion and was once of the best players in the world, just embarrasing. Since the US Open she has lost to Date, Vesnina, Arn, Petkovic and now Razzano. She is a complete and utter disaster right know. And whatever hard work or changes she made during the off season, none of that is existant on the court. I just don't get it. How can someone go from being one of the world's elite to this. She needs to retire. Honestly, she is just SO done. Why tarnish your legacy by continuing on with tennis and these humiliating losses?

Excuses after excuses after excuses after excuses. There are NO excuses for Maria's struggles these past three years. Her shoulder injury is so old news. She has been back for almost 2 years now, and all she has managed is one French Open quarterfinal, 3 singles title (two of them being Mickey mouse tournaments.) She played really well last summer, and I thought she really was a USO contender, then came that loss to Wozniacki and everything has been pretty much downhill since.

IMO it's the serve. Once she fixes that everything else will fall into place. She can't keep going out there and serving 2/3 DF's in every freakin' service game, it puts way too much pressure on her return game and she feels as though she has to win every point once the ball is in play. Just fix the fcking serve and then she should relax a bit more.

She's had plenty of time to fix her serve. I don't know who her coach is but by now they should have understand that her ball toss is completely out of sorts, and fixed that. Why doesn't she use more of a kick serve? Why is she so determined on making life so hard for herself? JUST USE MORE OF A KICK SERVE, MARIA. Use a well placed eerve that will give her free points of it. Whoever her coach is, they're not helping her one bit. They are just making her worse, if anything.

New coach will just take time. It's a bad comparison, but we saw it with Ana and her new coach. The results took a while to come but she did (briefly) start to play better tennis. Not saying that Tomas will definitely improve Masha's game, but you gotta at least give the guy a chance.

She probably is able to serve great in practise. But I think because she wants to get back to the top and compete for Slams again, when it comes to real matches, she's putting so much pressure on herself that when she does double faults, she starts doubting herself and therefore more DF's come.

I also think that when she plays now, you can see she really tense so that obviously doesn't help with the serve.

But I do think we should cut her some slack. Obviously we're all annoyed and fustrated that she these losses are always happening. But with the way she has lost most of her matches these past two years, you can't blame her for becoming a bit mentally fragile during matches.

She can't use a kick serve because of the fricken shoulder :weirdo:

I'm not excusing her terrible play in this match. They are all possible factors that could have led to this bad performance.

Like Lachy said, it's the serve that's holding her back. The double faults infiltrate her concentration on the groundies, they drag down her whole game.

And another thing, I'm sick and tired of all these random new members coming into Siberian Siren posting how Maria is done and dusted and all the crap about ruining her legacy. You'd fit in more in General Messages.
