 I shook my head at 6-0 5-0 saying, "Please Kim give her a game." It's just embarrassing these #1s.

It's clear Sydney was treated just as was it is: a warm-up tournament. Kim was hitting the ball much better than Sydney and was not here for any lapses or dips in form.

Dinara's FH was useless as usual, the serve as well.

Thought this match started at 7.30, so decided I would watch the rest of Ivanovic vs Makarova and then flick over. Checked the score at 7.45 and it was already 6-0 2-0:lol:

It was so sad to watch that - Dinara on her worst days was never ever as bad as that. Her forehand was a complete liability, her serve was hopeless and her main strength her backhand only had a very brief showing here. Just sad to see that and i feel uneasy after watching it just an odd feeling.

agreed. People don't understand the effort she has put into tennis post collapse.

Or, crap, the effort she's put into tennis her entire life. I understand her not being people's favourite, but if you can't have respect for someone who's never done anything but work as hard as humanly possible to be good at her job, then...

Anyway. Poor Dinara. I truly believe she's made a lot of horrible, horrible decisions in the last year and a half, which have led her directly to where she finds herself now. But knowing how hard she works, it's still sad to watch.

I think Kim is showing more respect to Dinara by double bagelling her, it shows that she is not taking her for granted even if she was up 6-0 5-0. Gifting one game to Dinara for "charity" is way more insulting in my opinion. You respect your opponent by never taking your foot off the pedal.

The only harsh thing for Safina is that people claim she lost because she was playing like shit, she was not playing good I agree but she was not that bad. She lost because she was playing against a wall. Kim hit 17 winners to only 4 UEs (all in the first set) and she served pretty well (79% of first serve, 87% of first serve won).

And this time last year Kim practically got double bagelled by Petrova. Everything is so unpredictable these days!

I really don't get these comments. I see them all the time how 'unpredictable' WTA is. Yet fact is the fave(s) win at a very high number of tournaments. As one would expect. Let me just scroll back: YEC, Beijing, Tokyo, USO, New Haven, Montreal, Cincy, SW19 (all won by faves. Actually, out of the 8 last slam/PM,P5,P events, in 7 of situation the player who had the shortest odds initially, went on to win the tournament). That sounds more like predictable than unpredictable to me. Before that granted some surprise winners on the red dirt at RG, Madrid and Rome.

PS I think I forgot a P in between. Vika's win Vs Sharapova. I don't recall how the initial odds were there. But even so, 7/9 wins by the 'fave' is also a high %.

Not if you have it with some cofee and cream cheese.

I just don't know what to say about Dinara right now. She is trying but it just isn't working. She ascended to a position that neither her game or talent was ready for. Hope she can be at least a top 20 player like before.

Was hoping this scoreline won't happen but wasn't surprised at all.

This expectation was based on even Bartoli can 6-0 6-1 her why couldn't Kim?

However, she was clueless as she talked about that in the press conference.

Her press conference is kinda sad and she totally explained herself there.

Safina even while ranked #1 took smackdowns from all the best women on everything but clay. 6-0, 6-3 and 6-1, 6-0 by Serena and Venus in slam finals and semis in 2009. So this is no surprise. lol, I wasn't even that impressed with Kim. She was good but Dinara has just become so useless. Two weeks ago she only won one game against Bartoli.

What a shame. Two years ago she was fighting with Serena to become world #1 at the end of the Australian Open. Now she can't even win one game.

I was wondering how the match unfolded since I didn't watch it, I suspected this to be the case.

But of course gutless organizers will probably keep giving her WC even when she's out of top 100 by the virtue of her being former world #1 :o

Dinara needs to find a way to reboot, a la Agassi and Capriati. She's trying hard, but it's with the weight of knowing where she once was. If she'd let go of the fact that she was #1 "a few months ago," she may find herself in the Top 20 by year's end.

Kim sure likes them bagels, doesn't she? It's the sixth of her career and her fourth at the Australian Open.

I have no idea why people are bitching that Clijsters should have conceded a game; this is a professional sport, not a charity event. Gifting Dinara a game would have been disrespectful. And she squandered a 5-0 lead in her last match, I don't think she wanted to take any chances with Safina.

Dinara

Just too much bad luck lately. She needs to go back to the bare basics, play some low key tournaments. ITF's seem like a big a step downwards, but anything to get some match rhythm would be my advise.

Kim's quotes:

Q. Was it last year that Petrova did a similar thing to you? Do you have empathy for her?
KIM CLIJSTERS: No, I mean, there's probably not much you can say to make her feel any better or that's going to help, obviously. But, you know, I know her well. We were talking in the locker room. So, you know, she's a good girl like that. It's not like she's not going to talk to me for the next two months when I see her on the road.

But, I mean, that's the sport we play. We step out there with two players. Sometimes things like that can happen. But just hope it's not going to make her confidence go even lower.

Q. In that situation, 6 Love, 5 Love up, do you think maybe you should give her a game?

KIM CLIJSTERS: Give her a game? No, I mean, I do feel bad. I even caught myself like at 5 Love, she hit those couple backhands down the line, Yeah, that's it. No, seriously (laughter). Okay, when she doesn't play against me, I'm rooting for her because I want her to get back into it and build confidence. You feel when your opponent, when we're in a rally and it's going well, it's like, Yeah, this is getting better. This is where she should be. Again, that backhand down the line was the shot I remember the most about her. She didn't use it until that last game.

But I wouldn't give her a game (smiling).

And Dinara's quotes:

Q. Does it hurt your pride more than anything else?

DINARA SAFINA: Definitely it hurts. But what I can do? First to find the reason what's going on, what are the mistakes, and then to work on them. Not to go blindly on the court and killing your ass for like five hours. Sometimes it makes no sense. You can practice five hours, but doing the wrong thing.

I have to do something, watch the video, what is missing, what is such a big difference what they making. And then to go on the court to focus, to close your eyes, head, and say, Okay, with the track suit, racquet and go and work.

Q. Doesn't sound like you're enjoying yourself now. You always said that is important.

DINARA SAFINA: I cannot say that I'm not enjoying. I cannot say that I hate. Of course, on the court when it's going 5 Love, 6 Love, it's tough. It's not that I'm breaking the racquet, crying. No.

It's tough mentally. But if I go in the practice, I'm enjoying more than before the last year because of injury. I'm really forcing myself this year, it's better. But then three first round loses, you don't know what to do.

Poor Dinara :awww:

It is also kind of comical and annoying hearing people like Safina referred to as "the former #1" which implies they she was at one point the best player in the World. That is not the case at all to anyone who followed tennis while she was #1, and IMO while it is a factual statistic it is also misleading and confuses people to think she was once something she never was. She was repeatedly killed by Serena, Venus, and even Kuznetsova in big matches and never won a major title so she was never the best player in the World. Other "former" #1s- Henin, Serena, Venus, Clijsters, Mauresmo, Davenport, even Sharapova somewhat, were all the best players inthe World while ranked #1. They posted better results than anyone else, won big titles at the time, and regularly defeated their main foes. Even among other recent bogus #1 Jankovic wasnt actually that much off from Serena in 2008 despite failing to win a slam, and Ivanovic reached #1 by reaching 3 slam finals and winning 1 in the past 13 months.

Some pure BS

Seriously who cares Tamarine couldn't move and bla bla bla  (...) Maria beat the faker in straight (...) Tanasugarn just didn't have to simulate whatever she was simulating if she wanted to win bad strategy against a player like Maria. Next.

Hum, interesting....

Kim is sorry.

After the match, the ever-congenial Clijsters felt the need to apologize for beating Safina so badly:
"I do feel bad, I even caught myself at 5-0 in the second set, she hit a couple of backhands down the line, I was like 'Yeah, that's it!'
"When she doesn't play against me, I'm rooting for her because I want her to get back into it and build confidence. But I wouldn't give her a (sympathy) game."

Now everyone who reads Yahoo! will know about "a player's historic loss" even if they don't watch tennis, it's on the freakin' homepage. :spit: :o

I'm not gonna pretend to care about some chick who is playing THAT bad for no reason.
Pova had a worse injury and she's not at this level of suckiness.
People should keep it real. I don't feel sorry for the broad, I never will. I don't endorse her, she's hella bad for the tour, in which sport you see a former number one being everyone and their mama's bottom bitch?
She needs to pack her ish and call it a career. She wasn't supposed to get that top spot considering her technical and mental shortcomings in the first place.
Bye

why don't you pack your snotty, childlike attitude outta here--you've got some more living to do to gain a little humility.

Safina should just give up, it's embarassing!! Normally hate it when people say 'RETIRE' but she should seriously consider it.

A never in doubt result, nice start to the tourney Kimmie doll!!!! :hearts: :yeah: Poor Safina, I think it's time to leave the big girl tour behind and drop down to ITF circuit for a while and see if confidence can be found and if this a game you can really be competitive at anymore.
