Dear Lord Makiri, way to make things hard on yourself!! :fiery: Should have wrapped it up serving at 6-3 5-3 in under 90 minutes....or at 6-3 5-7 5-4....but at least you came back to take it in 3 hours +. Quite the start to the tourney!

Well if she is going to be top 20, she definitely should not lose to Oprandi. Well done for saving yourself the embarrassment.

Oprandi is ranked 69, so ranking wise it compliments her that she is decent. Maria however should of closed it out in 2 sets, i am worried that she may be carring a shoulder injury (in sydney she was holding her shoulder against cibulkova, and seems to be struggling on serve)

She also plays Benesova in round 2, who won today 6-0 6-1...maria will need to be at her best!:)

SOOO relieved for Maria, excellent fight. Oprandi is a very talented player but you never know which Romina is going to show up...obviously she came to play. Hope she has a strong season.

Makiri really needs to improve and stop choking:o. Should have been an easy win for her today. But I'm still happy that she got through in the end. Shes going to needs to raise her level of play against Benesova who is in the form of her life.

I have to say my reaction to this scoreline was this....my how Romina Oprandi has improved on hardcourts.

Prior to this trip in Australia Romina's record on hardcourts has been woeful. Over the course of her career she has avoided hardcourts like the plague and notched up a mere 2 hardcourt victories over top 100 players, the most recent coming 4 years ago.

And yet, while Romina went 0-3 this year in Australasia she actually played very competitive tennis in all three matches against three very decent opponents. In her 1st 2 weeks down under she lost to CSN and Roberta Vinci by the scores of 63 76 and 76 63 respectively. Both very respectable scorelines against good opposition. But to take a player ranked in the top 20 to 8-6 in the final set far exceeds anything Romina has ever done previously on this surface. Taking account of all three results and one can only draw the conclusion that the days when Romina could not play on hardcourts are behind her.

I also can't help thinking that if Romina can take Kirilenko to 8-6 in the final set on hard, imagine what she will do when she gets back on the clay. Simply, although Oprandi has started her season 0-3, I think she looks in store for a very good year indeed.

Agree, with everything you said.
I cannot wait for clay season, I'm sure Kimi will have some great results.
She said after the match that she's ok, and that the score is really good. She simply would like to have better draws in Grand Slam (well, she's right ).
Good luck Bebe
