Hello all

I'm in thne process of trying to get the mixed doubles draw for Wimbledon in 1961. My copy of World Tennis inconveniently is missing the pages that carried the mixed results:mad:

Any help with scores-complete or otherwise-is appreciated:)

We for sure know the structure of the draw. We just don't know some of the first round (and hence second round) names.

I should have most of the second round draw when I get time to look at it.

Is there any reason why you have Stolle/Turner Bowery (Bowrey?) winning in the fourth round, but Turner/Stolle winning their quarter-final, to give one example? Surely it would be better to have Stolle/Turner throughout the whole thread (with their first names given when they feature in the draw for the first time)?

I have the feeling that Lesley Turner hadn't married by Wimbledon 1961, when she was only 19, but I might be wrong. Still, why not include a player's married name(s) in draws even before she was married? You wouldn't have to check things then.

Please let me finish editing Mark. You are commenting on a work that is rapidly in progress.

Ok-I've edited and formatted the mixed draw (see post #14). Big thanks to AustinRunner and Chris.

The draw was 80 for certes. I used World Tennis and the New York Times to tease out other details such as names and nationalities. Note that the 16 first round matches are "bunched" together near the center of the draw. This follows the exact draw format for previous Wimbledon draws from 1959 and 1960, which I have in my possesion.

My format follows the American style-ladies first. I also use maiden and then married names when known for the first round (example: Nell Hall Hopman) and then only the name used at the time thereafter (Example: Hopman). Women who had not yet married are listed as they were at the time (Example: Billie Jean Moffitt-not Billie Jean Moffitt King).

There are still a couple of ladies names I have yet to nail down.

Joan Gibson Cottrill-was she married in 1961?
Pauline Titchoner Roberts Cox -what name was she playing under?

If anyone finds errors or has other contributions don't hesitate to note them. Tomorrow I'll add this to the grand slam section and the 1961 thread.

Joan was listed as Gibson. Pauline was listed as Roberts (without Titchoner).

It's Sergei Likhachev.

Coronado and Mandarino were from Spain.

The Gibsons, Coghlan, and the Phillips-Moores were from Australia.

Pimentel was from Venezuela.

Gerrard and Otway were from New Zealand.

Ingvarsson was from Sweden.

Gaertner was from South Africa.

Crawford and Bond were from the U.S.

Bey was from Rhodesia.

Legenstein was from Austria.

Couldn't have been the Colin Dowdeswell who was born in 1955. So, let's go with R. R. Dowdeswell as listed in The Times of London. My mistake.

Technically, a walkover is not a defeat. That's why I don't say that so-and-so "d." so-and-so by default.

I can add a little here and there - we're getting onto some players I saw at Forest Hills now.

Mabel Bove and Federico MacKinlay are Argentinean
Carlos Fernandes is from Brazil
That’s Roger Dowdeswell from Rhodesia
Nyyssonen ends with an “n” – (Confirmed on Davis Cup Site)
Kingman B Lambert is from US
Emilio Martinez- from Spain
I believe it’s Bourgnon and Heinz Grimm is also Swiss
J. Genele/N. Nikolic must be Jelena Gencic and Sima Nikolic, #5 and # 6 respectively in Yugoslavia in 1961 rankings
Neville T. Holland-is Australian (TennisArchives shows him in GB this summer)
Ernesto Aguirre is from Chile
Tone Schirmer/Jarl Bibow are Norweigians
Crookenden is (NZ)
Bob Mark, from Austrailia, has moved to South Africa at this point?
Mrs Merrill Mark (SA) is the former Merrill Hammill /Tim Clayton, from Australia, played in Europe a lot starting 1962 while Anthony (Tony) Clayton stopped playing Wimbledon in 1959. My guess would be Tim (Again thanks to TennisArchives.com)
Edison Mandarino is from Brazil, he would marry Spanish Carmen Coronado
John McDonald is from NZ
John Hillebrand is Australian
Don Black is from Rhodesia (Cara’s dad, I think)
I have a Mary O'Sullivan from Ireland who played into the 1960’s and James. P. Buckley is an Irish Davis Cupper

Gardner/Schneiders is a complete mystery.

I want to thank everyone for contributing here-it was truly a team effort! The draw has now been posted in the 1961 thread and the Wimbledon mixed thread.

Posted by Austinruner Technically, a walkover is not a defeat. That's why I don't say that so-and-so "d." so-and-so by default.

I agree AR. The reason I post the result sthe way I do is simple: space. If I added "so and so advanced by default over so and so" it sometimes spills over into a 2 line result. I hate 2 line results. Space saving is also why I use "default" rather than "walkover".
